Such a simple sounding pattern, just shifting aound the back beats is so creative and smart for a 4/4 beat. Can you please do a similar video for both the opening/iconic drum pattern from The Art Of Dying and the opening pattern from Oroborus. That would so greatly appreciated. (Why I decided to try and learn those two songs I have no idea)?
Hi Kevin! Love your covers, have been subscribed for a while. I was one of the people who wanted the tutorial, so thank you for doing it. I was mostly interested about the hand pattern, and how to orchestrate it between the snare and hi-hats. However, for an 8 minute long video you barely touch on it! On 2:20 you show how it should sound and that's it, but I would have preferred if you broke it down, notated it, and played it really slowly. The video mostly focuses on the bass drum pattern, which honestly for me is the easiest to figure out and also arguably the least important. Still, thank you for the tutorial. Such a beautiful and underrated song and I'm glad you covered it. I don't mean to sound rude just thought I'd drop some constructive criticism. Cheers from Panama! :)
Hey man, thanks for the comment. A few things that should hopefully help: 1) Your right hand should alternate between the HH and SD, always playing ghost notes on the snare. The left hand plays the full snare hit on the 3 and supports with ghost notes in a simple RLRL pattern everywhere except right before and after the full snare drum hit. See bullet 3 below for a notation of the RL pattern and notice how beats 8 and 10 lack the left ghost note. I also explained the concept of the doublets in the video, which makes the pattern feel more natural and accurate to the original track, though it would change the notation. 2) You can alter the playback speed of the video in the video settings; feel free to use that to slow my playing down however you'd like. 3) Think of it in 16th notes: 1(R) 2(l) 3(r) 4(l) 5(R) 6(l) 7(r) 8() 9(RL) 10() 11(r) 12(l) 13(R) 14(l) 15(r) 16(l) 4) Not to be argumentative, but the BD pattern is the most important part of the groove. The BD patterns themselves are simple but learning the pattern combinations is tough and essential. I played the ghost note pattern differently in my medley video and it still fit fine but missing even a single BD hit would have ruined the cover. 5) This ghost note pattern is general so watch out for more accents. Mario throws in some Rll triplet pattens sometimes right before a transition to a new section. Make sure to listen very closely. Let me know if you have any more questions about the hand pattern. Thank you for your support - cheers from the US :)
Great man! This is one of my favs off L´enfant Sauvage (I luv the whole album either way, every song is unique) and as a drummer myself, this is very helpful. Definitely gonna try this!. Thanks for sharing it. Greetings from Argentina Kevin!
Pattern A goes x x x x s s s s s S s s s s s b b b Pattern B x x x x s s s s s S s s s s s b b b (Though if I understood him correctly he cuts the ghost note with the 2nd hat here and plays a double following the second quarter note instead) Pattern C x x x x s s s s s S s s s s s b b

Jeez that snare sounds good!
Whoa, I went with the ABC technique too, but it's arranged much differently. Now it's a battle between which one is more accurate
Thanks for explanations, man. That song groove is sooo solid!
