Karma: Action of Three Types [Hindi]

- Most want to know what is right versus wrong for them, what kind of karma should they do, what is karma, what is bad karma, what is forbidden karma and what is good karma. The subject is karma, action. Before I delve deeper, let us turn to Bhagavad Gita. Wisdom, doer and action are of three types. Karma that is not inspired by jealousy or greed, the one that is done with non-attachment is the type that is going to give you peace and contentment. Often people do karma with attachment to attaining the fruits of such karma. A common question is how is it possible to do anything with detachment? It seems only natural that to enjoy the outcome of the karma, are we prompted to perform such action at the first place. If I am hungry, it is only normal that to fulfill my hunger I am going to intake food. Eating food to pacify your hunger, that is okay. Attachment is when you begin to specify the type and variety of food you believe you require to fulfill your need. That binds one.
Krishna instructs Arjuna on the karma of three types. First, the karma that is sātvika, the one done in the mode of goodness, second, rājasī, performed in the mode of passion and third, tāmasī, the one done in the mode of ignorance. With sātvika karma, one gains liberation and inner peace, with rājasī, one gets pleasure and becomes attached, and with tāmasī, one experiences downfall of body, mind and soul. This is the fundamental nature of three modes of material nature. The first one liberates, the other ties and the third one causes the decline.

And we need to develop some spiritual vision that when we see the body of the little baby, it seems so innocent and new. Many people will think that this person just began to exist. But the soul inside this baby body is eternal and has engaged in many actions before, some good and some not so good. Therefore, this soul now has some karmic seeds with them that at some point later can and will ripen into karmic fruits that this person will have to experience. Like Jesus said, “As you sow, so you shall reap.”
When we are subject to somebody treating us unfairly or cruelly we often feel that we want justice or even revenge. It can be very frustrating then when we experience when a criminal is not caught by the human justice system. But whether someone is caught or not, they will pay a much higher price. The law of karma is always perfect. Everyone will get what they deserve. So, we don’t have to be in unnecessary anxiety about this. The feeling of revenge is not helpful or even needed. Of course, we still want the justice systems to do their job well so that society overall will be safer and protected from dangerous individuals. And it is in the best interest of even the criminals to be caught so they stop creating a more and more horrible future for themselves as well.
In this world most people are very unaware of the fact that they are creating a very dark future for themselves by acting in hedonistic, self-centered and often cruel ways. Whenever a person acts in material consciousness with the aim of enjoying the fruit or the result of their action, then this creates a karmic reaction. It might be so-called good, bad or neutral. But in any case, accumulating karmic reactions that I will have to experience in the future bind me to this material world.
It is not non-action which is going to make it so that we are going to be free from the bondage of karmic reaction. We are not going get away from that by not doing anything. We must still act. In fact, sometimes inaction can create bad karmic reactions when we fail to act on our duties and responsibilities.
