This one's not that STRANGE, per se, but Courtney Yates was recruited when Lynne Spillman happened to be at the New York restaurant where she worked, and Spillman noticed Courtney being...Courtney...to a customer who was rude to her
Fuck Applying, I'm just gonna fly to LA, do something weird enough to get a casting director to notice me, and then act like I've never seen the show in my life. Make it on the show, and then "Guess what? Actually a superfan."
I feel like this may help a lot. Paranoia ruins peoples games, if you don't know how hard people will go, you don't get worried, you don't push people away and more importantly people don't see you as an obvious threat and can't guess your moves because you're likely not going to use commonly used tactics.
Apparently he was added to the cast super last minute as well, so I don't think he had much time to prepare. He had no idea what Survivor was and still did such an amazing job.
Jud "Fabio" told a story a few years ago on Fairplays podcast about being approached by casting when he was skateboarding and asked if he was interested in being on the show. This was however a couple years after he had already won season 21.
this is very similar to gabe from marquesas, who applied to be on a season later on (i think the amazon but i'm not sure), and made it pretty deep before casting realized he already played lol
As a tradition, all survivor super fans should get together and go to different taco stands every Wednesday in hopes of being recruited. I'm not eating because I have no self control, I'm eating because I'm chasing my dreams
Weird that ppl would question casting during Tocantins, arguably one of the greatest newbie casts in show history (imo). Side note, I think recruits are good for the game. Can't have 20 gamebots who have been absorbing Survivor strategy for 20 years, we need some people to throw off the gameplay and complicate things.
The opinion on recruits has now flipped. After the gamebot hyperbigmoveitis extravaganza that is 38-39 and 41-43, the fan opinion is that the cast needs people who haven't seen the show

Thank you for saying how good Sabrina was. She had some great stuff to offer and I would love to see her outside of Kim's shadow in a different season.
She's a great player and character, probably one of the most underrated in both categories ever in my opinion. I think she would absolutely dominate a second shot
I think the original Sabrina Thompson should be cast for a season. Or do a season where Survivors has douplebanger names. Imagine how crazy it will be.
When I first checked out this channel a year ago, I thought oh this guy is pretty good, but no way better than this channel or that one. Now this is by far my favorite survivor channel and every video is great. There's something about the delivery and presentation that's always just right. Plus the info and content is of course great. Keep it up!!
For Sierra's casting, I wonder if they had a "cute blonde" drop out three weeks before the game began, so the casting agents were given the order "just go out on the street and find a few cute blondes as replacement"
It's interesting how many last minute casting changes there has been over the years. Mike Borassi was supposed to be on Tocantins but they pulled him at the last second for health reasons and replaced him with Spencer.
@@Captain-Sum.Ting-Wong abi-maria from survivor philippines was also supposed to be in tocantins but producers said it was “unfair” because she was brazilian and it was somewhat an advantage for her since it was filmed in brazil. but it’s kinda a weird reason because peih gee was chinese and came out in survivor china.
Ozzy got recruited after his roommate didn't want to be on the show. Casting asked his roommate if he knew anyone hispanic who wanted to be on the show, and the rest is history.
I thought you were going to say Philip got recruited when he delivered mail to the casting manager. Or the casting manager looked up "department of defense specialist in charge of saving America"
I LOVED these recruiting stories and would like to see the stories behind EVERY contestant to include where they came from, what they did before survivor, and what made them decide to try out for the show. I noticed that most contestants are VERY ATTRACTIVE, and ATHLETIC, which makes perfect casting sense. For people like myself, who'd LOVE to be able to select survivor RECRUITS, these videos would be all-time favorites. I can imagine the casting director approaching Philip during one of his favorite odd activities, and then learning his biography. AUTOMATIC ACCEPTANCE! Whether or not one likes Philip, he remains one of the most memorable characters. I wonder how the FBI selected him for service? Could they also have recruited him? Imagine being his partner! My best friend in college was recruited by the FBI. If she were paired with Philip, she might have killed him! If you do more of these contestant backgrounds, Russel Hantz is another interesting character I'd love to learn about. Most are so different when "playing the game", viewers would be shocked to learn about their "off island" lives. [PS - Just wondering if any of these potential survivor contestants are given psychological tests before they become part of the cast?]
my favorite is naonka's recruiting story, she explained it on talking with t-bird and it's definitely worth a listen- she was pulled over on the side of the road in santa monica with her boyfriend, where they were hotboxing her car. she decided she wanted some fruit from the fruit stand nearby and got out to get some, while she was high. however, she was wearing flip flops, and one of them for caught on something on the boardwalk and the strap came off the sole of the shoe. two casting agents saw all of this, and approached her and asked her what time it was. she saw that they both had iphones, and said "and you DON'T know what time it is?" they laughed and gave her a card, and said to call her later. she did call them, and was basically a lock for most of casting and her interviews, etc were pretty short since they already knew they wanted her. while at the hotel, she saw a little of heroes vs villains, which was airing at the time, and thought "this looks easy" and went through with it.
I went on an audition many years ago. I realized after that I should have answered one of the questions very differently. Oh well, at least I still have the cool Surviver shirt. Someday I plan to try again and nail it ♥
I've never minded the concept of recruits, mainly because half the appeal of Survivor is the social element of different people from different walks of life and different goals forced to live together and find common ground, and you can't get that if everyone casted on the show is there because they're all superfans of the game who have auditioned for years. That's how you get a cast full of gamebots. That's not fun.
I think Sierra gets such a bad rap lol I don't get it. Was she really that annoying? I remember watching it and honestly feeling sorry for her since it was obvious she was going to get eliminated at the merge.
She was apparently pretty annoying. I don’t think this was all her fault- she was sick at the start of the game and seems to have resting sour face- but she was apparently pretty hard to live with according to multiple people. That doesn’t justify the way she was treated, though.
I felt horrible for her the whole time. Was it Coach maybe who straight lied and sent her home and she literally just cried alot and panicked . I think the Cieras ,Sierras or however they spell it who proceeded her did a great job at making us forget if she was horrible or not.
I`m a huge fan and have seen every season at least once and have seen each of the first 35 seasons at least three times. EASILY my least favorite season was Fiji, partially for the format but also because some of the players (Dreamz, Rocky and Lisi) felt contrived and/or weird. It comes as no surprise almost all of them were recruited. They almost lost me with that season.
It’s funny, several of the pre-HvV seasons where the show had supposedly “lost its way” because it was casting recruits ended up being some of the best seasons ever
Okay but wouldn’t it be really strange if I got recruited from this survivor video hahah so weird right (pls cast me random casting agent looking at this)
Did no one think it was a plot to kidnap them? If someone on tinder is like: "hey, would you like to be deserted on an island with little food", you just get another kink.
Max was for sure, but he was obviously a huge, huge fan beforehand. I believe they initially sought him out because having a guy who teaches a college-level class on Survivor was too rich a casting opportunity to ignore
I'm a huge fan, been applying for years, and this whole "recruiting" technique, just bugs me. I would love to play, I know the game... just let me play!!
I still prefer recruited players than those annoying superfans who think they deserve to win just for being superfans. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll go Google "girl" and "dog".
Sierra really gets too much shit in my opinion. She wasn't likable to either cast or the viewer, but she did make it pretty far into the game anyway. And who would Tyson hate on? I also respect her perseverance, even though she cried a lot, I think that most people would have thrown the towel if they were faced with that much hostility on the show.
This explains so much about how Survivor seasons had some incredibly boring casts! By the time many of the seasons ended, I already couldn't remember most of the players.
Update on premergers only being able to date each other: Cristina Coria from Cook Islands just revealed in her Dalton Ross Quarantine Questionnaire that she dated Joel Klug from Borneo before she was on the show
Casting staff should recruit full-blood American Indians, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians. These communities are rarely represented in the media. Also, stop recruiting people from California - that state is over represented in Survivor. Recruit natives/tribal members from New Mexico, Alaska and Hawaii - those states have never been represented in 40 seasons.
Kinda weird that you took Joaquin's story he shared with ATF and not Corinne's, who called CBS, demanded to get ahold of Mark Burnett, ranted about how she should be selected for the show and pretty much Karen'd her way into getting on the cast.

Probably the luckiest right swipe in history and I'm including people who got married after meeting on Tinder in that
The Bachelor/Bachelorette does the same thing. They have producers on dating apps and will literally catfish them and then get them to be on the show
