However this would be nice to just boot up and not worry about what problems windows or my sound driver might decide to have
Thanks for the video Ricky, I think you hit the nail on the head - the complexity, unpredictability and the fun! I switched to Renoise about 4 years ago and never looked back! Trackers take time to get a fluid workflow (I guess like anything) but once it clicks, it’s just crazy how powerful, interesting and fun making music becomes - especially on just a laptop and headphones. My advice to anyone is don’t try to make you’re usual stuff at first but instead experiment to learn the fx commands and general workflow then it will just click and you’ll have the power! I expect the Polyend tracker to be much the same but more immediate than Renoise, with added bonus of creative limitation, performance features, that fill mode and a radio! I'm so happy this thing exists, can’t wait for mine to arrive!
I started off with Renoise about 12 years ago as my first daw. It takes a while for it to "click" but man, the amount of control it gives you is absolutely insane.

I learned a fun little trick with this yesterday. I set up multiple tracks with one of the pad sounds. Then applied different volume LFO FX to them and created this amazing Detroit gated pad sound. I’m going to try and make a video about it and post it on RUclips. I have never done that yet other than uploading GoPro footage of my snowboard trips so it may take a week or so. If anyone is interested I will link in this comment. ❤️
trackers are actually not that different from step sequencers... if you think more, this is very similiar to digitakt, just notes are not going from left to right but from top to bottom... you still have 8 tracks with note per step, you still have mono channels, you still have sound locks and parameter locks (just two per step, though), you have microtiming per step - it's not that different from digitakt, just the flow of notes is rotated by 90 degrees clockwise :-) btw just recently discovered your channel - it's great ! Even when you're talking about things which i totally know, i'm still enjoying watching it :-) Really really great job !
You’re the man. I just can’t help but wonder why someone would spend all this time? It seems like a solution for someone who has decided DAWs are not the right way to go, but I feel like this would waste so much time for anyone trained on a computer. What am I missing here? What’s the value add?
Please make more videos of the Polyend Tracker!!! I’m still debating if I want to get one and hearing more things that you come up with using it (and its workflow) would help a lot :) Great video as always!
It's really cool that there are standalone hardware trackers now. In many ways, it's a big upgrade from software trackers. But in many ways, it's also a downgrade. It'd be really difficult to work with just 8 tracks, especially since they're monophonic and shared between samples and midi. I know there are tricks people can do to fit more notes into less space, but they're all just workarounds and aren't necessary when using other tools. More generally though, I've spent a lot of time using trackers, and although they're really nice in some ways, trackers are also a big part of why I stopped making music. It made music feel too much like work. I didn't get back into music until I found other tools and other workflows which suit me better. So I'm happy to see a new hardware tracker, but I have no plans to get one.
Had a go on one of these today and the removal of the reverb (no matter how bad it was) is a biggggg mistake. Yes, there's an echo now.. But having to bounce it and master afterwards to get a basic effect kinda kills the live part.
Holy fuck I think I just found another tool to help me make music. After years of not playing I decided to get back into it as basically a beginner again. I've struggled with the complexity of DAWs and forming sounds with virtual instruments then putting it all together and stuff. I didn't even know trackers were a thing and it seems much more my style. Especially something hardware and dedicated like this. I also have a model cycles I just bought and I'm falling in love with and the two of these things together would rock my fucking world haha. Thanks for this video!
Whoa, I knew nothing about trackers before watching this - seems like a very engineery workflow. Definitely seems like trackers would make you think about music more.. logically? Awesome vid as always, Enrique!
Definitely! I used trackers for a very long time before moving over to the typical daws you see today. I like Ableton, but I don't click with certain things like I did a tracker. My workflow, no many how many tricks I learn, will never be as fast and fluid as it was on a tracker (Modplug Tracker was my weapon of choice). Maybe because I learned how to make music on them before I ever touched a real synth or professional recording software..?
It’s certainly fascinating, but not for me. I’m most productive on the Elektron sequencer, but I loved the video and appreciate you helping point out how unique this thing this.
The idea of having an entire DAW in a small sleek box like this is super appealing, but I also know from many previous attempts (and watching this video) that I _do not_ get along with the tracker workflow. If they could figure out a way to cram Live into this form factor, I'd be so happy.
I had a passive interest before, but I am rather intrigued now. Maybe it's the clicky keys, maybe it's the way the workflow looks like programming, but I feel a little delight watching this workflow.
Hey RT, why won't the PeT be a part of your "big main studio?" It seems to be an insane sequencer at the very least. I know you're a big Digitakt guy, but it's limited to just 64 steps. I'm just kinda wondering because I just ordered a PeT to replace my BeatStep Pro.
I think this is the best looking music hardware I’ve ever seen. Only problem is, it looks quite limited in comparison to Renoise & yes I know this is dedicated hardware but I still feel a laptop and Renoise is infinitely more powerful. Nonetheless I still love it :-)
As an old Octamed and Fasttracker user this is really my thing! I do use Renoise now together with an MPC and some Roland Boutique synths, but I think this piece of gear will really shake my studio up once again. Plus, a tracker in hardware format? What's not to like?
oh hell yeah, i've got one preordered and i'm so excited to get my hands on this thing! would be verrry interested in seeing some more videos from you featuring the the tracker, would make the wait for it a lot more bearable lol also curious as to wether it has any kind of resampling, as that could be used to somewhat get around the 8-track limit on it, not to mention that using that in conjunction with some of the granular/wavetable-y capabilities of the device could get very fun very fast
I nearly preordered one as well.... but I needed a recorder for little sample stuff so I got the h6 and figured by the time this touches the shelves I'll have more zzounds stuff paid off and I'll be able to finance this
Glad we are blessed from the touchscreen! This thing builds upon muscle memory which requires tactile feedback on everything. A touchscreen cannot meet that requirement. By the way, there are tons of good trackers for the iPad if you want a great touchscreen experience.
Can it be connected directly to amplifier with speakers or active speakers to listen? What I need is the unit like MPC Live or MPC one but with different workflow.
Great Video as Always, Seems like a very niche product. Instead of pushing workflow forward we are going back to the caveman days :) I am sure some people will love it just for the nostalgia factor.
i own one - great machine, and really easy to learn - especially if u have used FL Studio before - because the pattern view and loading samples on patterns is basically the same, just not in horizontal view but vertical :)
Renoise is so amazing!! Put a touch screen to it, use Tools like dive, lauflicht etc You have Clips, Unlimited midi Instruments, all the limitations from MPC You don´t have. Ableton out, MPC out, Logic out, Renoise Always back, All informations on one screen...…….
So Ricky one question, I may have missed this. The tracker uses mono samples but my library is mostly 44.1 stereo, does it convert samples to mono on the fly as it imports them to a project or do you need to pre convert to mono?
4 года назад+2
aikighost yes it does convert to mono while importing from sd
wow i think my first tracker go back to 1998/99 would not go back to that, take away any inspiration by the time i do something, but good for you, it look you having a wonderfull time, enjoy
I'm in the same kinda new "Feeling Dop(amine)" zone too. With the Push2. Been peeking alot on that Trak. Pretty funny cuz I've been waiting for u to do this video for the last few months. Cuz u know I wanna Push2 the next level ;) Great vid Ricky!! :D Divine Time...
Curious if you are still using this thing a year later... Why/Why not? The 1/8th connects for everything are kind of a turn off, that and I read it's only mono sampling? It does still at least playback stereo samples though I hope... Also how to go about adapting an XLR to 1/8th or am I supposed to use some cheap little microphone?
If it had a battery it would be a nice alternative to Renoise from the couch. A power bank and some velco kind of solves that, I guess. I feel like the tracker workflow of Renoise/OpenMPT/ScreamTracker/OctaMED/etc is like left-handed scissors of DAWs. For most people it's terrible and awkward, but for some people it perfectly suits how they approach compositions.
I feel like if someone memorized all the short cuts on the Tracker and was making a banger in a coffee shop, people would think they’re hacking into the government! Awesome stuff!
Gar Hoover They are. The hardware’s just a cover. How do we know the radio circuitry is receiving only? Huh? Huh? Prove me wrong!

would be verrry interested in seeing some more videos from you featuring the the tracker, would make the wait for it a lot more bearable lol
also curious as to wether it has any kind of resampling, as that could be used to somewhat get around the 8-track limit on it, not to mention that using that in conjunction with some of the granular/wavetable-y capabilities of the device could get very fun very fast
I nearly preordered one as well.... but I needed a recorder for little sample stuff so I got the h6 and figured by the time this touches the shelves I'll have more zzounds stuff paid off and I'll be able to finance this
Quote of the month, already on the 2nd: "One is Two, Zero is East and Black is - dunno - Concrete".
moinlabs, It is indeed t-shirt worthy! Over to you Ricky!
Every screen grab of your videos is a beautiful picture.
Good demo! I want one! Used to make music(noise) on a tracker called FastTracker2
If you ever think hexadecimal is complicated just think of the Microsoft paint. It uses hexadecimal for its color pallet :) love the channel!
you can just turn it off 🤷♂
My first impression on this: Lot of menue diving, which is my flow killer. This screen is big enough for graphic based UI and Touchscreen.
As a long time tracker user, this looks really cool. And I like the beat in the beginning! You should fwonk it out proper more often man.
Whats the tiger face you keep on the desk ?
Renoise is so amazing!! Put a touch screen to it, use Tools like dive, lauflicht etc You have Clips, Unlimited midi Instruments, all the limitations from MPC You don´t have. Ableton out, MPC out, Logic out, Renoise Always back, All informations on one screen...…….
So Ricky one question, I may have missed this. The tracker uses mono samples but my library is mostly 44.1 stereo, does it convert samples to mono on the fly as it imports them to a project or do you need to pre convert to mono?
aikighost yes it does convert to mono while importing from sd
@ Thanks for letting me know. This makes a purchase more likely.
I'm imagining an Octatrack in that industrial design, it's what's keeping me here lol
I know these are super different, but since the OP-Z is another groove box at a similar price point, which would you choose if you had to?
I have the OP-Z and after a few days it clicked with me and it’s super fun. The only problem... it’s too damn small.
wow i think my first tracker go back to 1998/99 would not go back to that, take away any inspiration by the time i do something, but good for you, it look you having a wonderfull time, enjoy
Amazing stuff!! Thanks for sharing. I need that shelf you have back there. Can you share the info on it?
Fast Tracker is back. Never got used to that pattern view
Looks like a fun box and the UI is awesome!
Could you please link the author of that quote? Only finding strange novel authors when trying to type the name you said on google.
It's in the video description 👍🏻
10:23 The word you seek is "conventional". :) Good overview. I'm warming up to this crazybox bit of gear.
