So many ridiculously rich people in the world and so many poor people, the balance is so wrong, but I can’t see it ever getting any better. I’ve lived in Brighton most of my life and the amount of homeless people has gone up every year. Great to see these people helping these unfortunate people.
I agree with you that the balance is definitely off but a lot of the people on the streets are there because of the addiction to drugs. Rich people work for their money while others spend it on drugs and are unable to work and support themselves as a result because of their addiction. I don’t think we can blame the rich people but more the failure of the government to tackle the vast drug problem in the whole of UK. Not necessarily even a drug problem, but mental health issues which often lead to drug abuse.
If you are one paycheck away from homelessness you are not organizing your life correctly. If you are earning a paycheck you should be saving enough to build up a 6-month emergency fund. Any financial expert will tell you this.
I am lucky not to be in this situation. However, many are that is what I am saying. Some jobs out there are really low salaries look at jobs on indeed 20k pa
How can you save a three month emergency fund. If your being paid 2000 a month, rent is 1000, bills are 200, council tax 150, food 500. You only have 150 quid left. That would take you 6 years to save a six month emergency fund. What do you do if an emergency comes up in them six years

I'm a Brightonian and don't recognise my town today. I think people percolate down through the country, then when they get to the coast, they can't go any further. They become stuck, sometimes for years. Heartbreaking.
Well they can, we have open borders and they are free to leave the UK, perhaps France, or Germany, but then the benefits system is not as generous there.
I'm pretty sure if they were on benefits they wouldn't be on the streets to be honest there like pigeons on the street, cast out by society as there no longer needed.
weird, I'm a Brightonian also, but to me, it's the same as it was 20 years ago. There was a massive homeless problem then and there is now. nothing has changed.

So sad to see him still out there 😢 i had to leave Brighton to get housed and had to leave all my friends behind to do it. Now happily housed and have sole custody of my 5yr old child- you can turn it around if you have the will to succeed
I lived in brighton during 2012, london were transporting people who were living rough down to brighton! They completely abandoned people on the coast and left these humans to rot, ut was so horrific and all the aid services were so overwhelmed
YES YES Can relate. I was attacked by convicted criminals, one of whom was mentioned in the national news as mugging the elderly in shared council accommodation and my life put in danger by the authorities! I have evidence against the council as well as council meeting minutes published about this. I have been physically tortured by the local mafia i.e Council and Police and slandered for exposing the TRUTH!
There is no chemical solution for a spiritual problem. We all have these issues. Everyone of us. All homelessness is, is the eternal struggle of soul manifested consciously into reality. Right there projected onto our streets. For all of us too see. It’s scary it hurts and it’s just sad. We all walk the path of denial.
Better Help is “accessible” if you have the money for it. A lot of people have mental health issues due to a lack of money to pay for the basics, it doesn’t matter if you give 10% off, these services should be free.

There have also been a lot of issues with better help specifically. Lack of professionalism from the therapists and them not handling more serious issues appropriately.
Plenty of free accessible charities in Brighton. Getting in a prescription & some hostels. Brighton is a bit like a beacon for homeless. Most are from out of the town.
Paul Young is such a great spokesperson for the cause and such an impressive man. He's an inspiration for people trying to help the homeless, wherever they are!
Suprised to see my hometown here, the homelessness here is very high but we do have a number of services that help the homeless population like BHT(I've used them personally and they're really helpful I now have a flat because of how welcoming and understanding they are with opportunities & it's the first time in years I can say everything is mine again it takes it toll after a while never knowing what you're doing or what's yours), YMCA, stop over. Though it's not say Brighton isn't thriving even though we have the retail downfall as well (We have an IKEA coming soon, I look forward to that) but out of every place I visit I always want to go back to Brighton as it has everything you'll ever need and the nightlife is tiers above most places (Minus the bouncers) and Brighton is different from everywhere, it has a lot of character.
Surprised, really? All you need to do is walk up by the station or the Pavilion Gardens to see there's a big problem in Brighton. And it's nothing new, it's been like it for years
When I was street homeless in Brighton BHT kept sending me back to Brighton and Hove council, who kept sending me back to BHT... so I never found either of them any use...
Love watching these videos l was homeless when l was young helped a few folks over the years saving a bloke trying to take his life well done Wendell ❤
You won't save someone from taking their life unless you help them with their circumstances, sorry not being funny but I have been up Beachy Head many times and been abused in the psych unit run by psychopaths. Many people want believe their own good deeds make a difference and many of them do not listen and invalidate. Society has this narcissistic notion that if we sweep people's problems under the carpet and tell them to leave it in the past until it happens again and again...those lives you think you saved may have and may STILL end in suicide! I don't mean this as a personal attack, I just know because I have been there many times over and am still getting this narcissistic treatment and I am still homeless. I have been tortured physically and emotionally by the corrupt authorities for the past 7 years. The people paid to help me helped push me and other patients to suicide! Some did suicide.
Eye opening video. As i said in another video comment I left Ireland in the mid 80s and got work in England. Newhaven was where i had a job to start. Eventually bought a house in Portslade at the time , worked in Newhaven, laterly in a hospital in Haywards heath. This city gave me the start I needed when I was 20 ish, now nearlly 60. I arrived in Brighton weeks after the grand hotel bombing, being Irish was not a good thing then. Some people hated me , understandable, equally I managed to gain the trust of others from this great town. I got my start, being honest I didnt see so much Homeless ness then, perhaps it was there. Paul is a great man, he so sees the situation for wat it is and doesnt judge. Top man doing a great thing! Wel done on another interesting video. Hope the 2 gents who have got themselve sorted get back into a good place . Good people who deserve a chance!

i lived in brighton for 15 yrs and i met a lot of homeless people and most of them made the trek from london to brighton thinking its an easier way to make money etc. Maybe so in the summer months but even brightons tourists fade away during the winter months
What a fantastic guy Paul Young is. A man with vision, strength, kindness and an eye to spot the "phoney" beggars. If only our councils and politicians could show so much care and have his drive.
I’ve been living in Brighton now for more than 14 years now and sadly I’ve seen the gradual decline in the quality of life and rising prices of living which have been pushing local people out of the city centre. I started to notice this at least 10 years ago with agent furcation which came from which people coming down from London and buying up cheap properties predominately in London Road and causing the rent to skyrocket and making it impossible for local people to have any hope on getting onto the property ladder at all.
I also think that a big reason that contributes to homelessness in U.K. is the astronomical house prices and rents, which are way out of reach for most people of the younger generation. Their Salaries aren’t high enough to cope with the outrageous cost of property here
Not normally substance abuse is by far the biggest. Before 2009 when the U.S. government gave the Méxican cartels a monopoly on meth production, tent cities were virtually unknown in the U.S.. It was only after 2009, when meth(amphetamine) flooded the whole U.S. cities that tent encampments became a regular fixture. I think it is widely accepted that meth (not really found in Europe, it does exist but very small) is responsible for the tent cities. You hear Fentanyl! Fentanyl! Fentanyl! It´s not the real problem in the U.S. meth is. Saying that since the arrival of Spice, homelessness in the UK has exploded. There is a saying in politics "nothing happens by accident" who really was responsible for introducing spice in UK drug culutre?
@@Westhamsterdam Yeah you are probably right that meth probably has caused a lot of these tent cities to shoot up in the US. And in the U.K. I’m not sure about the connection between spice and homelessness. A lot of homeless people appear to use Spice, but I don’t know if that is an effect of been homeless or whether it’s a cause. Much like with alcohol they probably use it to zombie out in a stupor. But I doubt Spice would lead to mass homelessness like meth since Spice has effects almost identical to regular marijuana except it’s less safe. Here in U.K. I would think that the extortionate cost of housing and wage swallowing monthly rents are a big cause, since social housing is hard to come by here now in most places. The demand for it is too high and they haven’t replaced all the social housing that’s been sold off. And even unemployed people often don’t get all their private rent covered since it’s so expensive in England that it leaves a shortfall. Then there is also bedroom tax in addition to this. So this seems to be a big reason here. Drugs don’t seem like a huge problem here like in US
Coastal towns have become a dumping ground for homeless and poor people with complex issues by the tory government. As London becomes more and more gentrified and a money laundering centre for crooked Russians etc who buy up swathes of property the more people that get priced out or moved on. It's social and ethnic cleansing of the working classes and the poor and vulnerable. With that it creates huge issues for where these people are decanted without choice. The council services, housing and support structures outside of London simply cannot cope with what's been forced upon them by central government.
In the last few months 2 homeless have died in Kettering.it’s so cold this time of year.People just don’t seem to care.I don’t know what the solution is but something has to be done to help these people.
Ive been homeless in and around London and the south , the most recent spell was for four years only ending two years ago. I have nearly always managed to be part of a crew and squat somewhere. It's not easy, but it seems to suit my temperament more than being an individual rough sleeping (although I have opted for that occasionally fleeing the squat for the sake of safety and sanity!) So Brighton takes a really dim view of squatters. It feels like a zero tolerance policy with extraordinary measures for anyone attempting occupation. I know they can be fussy about some of their fancy old buildings, but they come down very hard on anyone in derelict buildings or in out of the way situations where they are no trouble. I am sure this contributes to the increased numbers on the street and must affect their mental and physical health . I would have suffered pretty badly if I had to sleep rough bc there is nowhere to squat .
i lived in brighton in the 90s, it was full of love and fun...i used to give food to a few rough sleepers, not been back in decades...hastings is even worse...great videos
It's great to have you as a genuine investigative journalist/film maker on You Tube Wendall!.I am sending your videos on far and wide. Wendall I really love your videos, very humanising and important. I lived in Brighton 12 years ago and it was difficult to find a job that paid the rent (1/3 of my income was going on my rent) I can only imagine things have gotten much worse.

I lived in Brighton in my 20’s and spoke to many homeless people during that time…so many told me that they were in London but when the 2012 olympics were held they were rounded up, given a train ticket to Brighton and never left to ‘improve’ the image of London for the Olympic tourists
I have to comment here. I have had help in the past from off the fence and they are a lovely bunch of people. If anyone was thinking of donating, do it. Your money will be going to a very good cause. Great video 👍
Wendall, this is some really great work you're doing. Thank you! There is a possibility I might end up on the streets, too... as I've been reckless with my life and now I'm 53 living with my old father... long story... lol.. this shyt can happen to anybody these days. it's terrifying.
Going through your historical content since your video on Bath. Eye opening, Brighton like my home town is a lovely city, but has a bad homeless problem. Keep doing what you are doing Wendall 👍
No chance of Paul getting a Nobel peace prize he's doing good work for the people more likely to get one if you are selling weapons to another country to destroy people
I point the finger of blame for all the drug abuse and homelessness firmly and directly at the Government, deliberately overpopulating the country and ignoring its wellbeing of its own citizens is a crime in itself and those who sit in parliament should be ashamed of themselves!
Not immigrants fault that people choose drugs and booze. Whobwould you rather live with, a clean immigrant or a conniving, violent addict? Feel free to offer up your couch to one of them.
Why would immigration cause people to choose drugs and alcohol? It’s down to individuals whether they use them or not (rightly or wrongly I. It here to judge) and beside at some point this country (and other) have always had people coming here, maybe I will blame William Conqueror for my issues as he was an immigrant to this country 😉🙄
@@Gez-CThe money and resources are going into supporting and funding Immigrants, in clean warm hotels, free food, phones, access to healthcare, education and whatever else they need. The social, mental and physical needs of homeless people is deliberately being neglected, but yes it is a choice to drink, take drugs etc. The issues are a lot deeper though, jobs being lost to technology, high cost of rent, low wages that don’t cover basic cost of living, that’s just a few
@@princebuster93 thanks for your response mirroring my own response to the previous two .i would also add that drink and drugs destroy lives of the families connected to these mentally ill addicts . This country used to have mental asylums for these kind of people until some do-gooder decided under the banner ‘ care in the community ‘ to close these asylums as it was stigmatising people and now we have them living in front of of our eyes . This country never had a homelessness problem until recently . I could go on and on but I hope you get my point. The Cabal of crooks sat in parliament are at fault!
@@gingerali to be honest, you cannot solve a spiritual problem with man made solutions, we can see the proof by examining exactly what you are saying. The Government have become a social engineering machine, that has manipulated society to such a degree that to many people look to the Government to change and solve the decline in people’s social, economic and mental wellbeing. The Government was not set up to be the people’s caregiver or God, but a communist Government will always seek to be the people’s God, = to control them. Come from a poor family, spent a good few years just surviving, but always worked, once I started seeking God and became born again, spiritually, my life changed for the better. It has room for about 200 people with shared but private showers and a big communial room with kitchens. It was perfect. Brighton mini London ❤️ I was there last week and yes, lots of homeless people on the streets. Looking at the estate agents rental market one property near Kemp Town rental £3,000 a month to rent 😮😮 crazy money
Because now landlords rent by the night. They can charge more than the weekly rent in one night. So that reduces the number of flats houses available. This is a trend all over the country. Air bnb get rich off of your property. Then walk past the homeless who have no affordable and very few properties available to rent.
In recent years Brighton has been the drug death capital of Britain, the teenage pregnancy capital of Britain, homeless everywhere, a huge disparity between rich and poor. We left Brighton because the rent was £1600 per month for a three ned ex council house. It's a strange, strange place.
According to new figures published by the UK's Office for National Statistics, Middlesbrough, Blackpool and St. Helens are England's teenage pregnancy capitals
@@StevieSpiers-ru3mfHow can you be that rude when talking out your arse. Lived in Brighton for over 15 years. Declared drug death capital in the UK over ten years ago, it's not now and that's not considered recent. Stating it's the teenage pregnancy capital of Britain is also not true, but it has been high.
The rich -poor divide has got to be the worse it has ever been. I'm shocked at the stats for Brighton. I truly feel the government is just allowing this to happen.
"I truly feel the government is just allowing this to happen". If truth be known the government (elites) are behind the drugs trade. Drugs (none recreational) are there to destroy them but at the same time if you feed them & look after them on the streets (just like Kessington/Skid Row) you create a type of prison where they can´t escape this is how the elites manage it they keep them to certain areas away from rich.
Many thanks for posting. So many societal problems are glossed over by a self interested mainstream media whereas this video highlights how much people are in desperate need as a result of this governments callousness.

It is a great shame that our government does not enable people living on the streets into some form of housing. Solomon that you interviewed is very well spoken and it is such a shame that his and so many lives are being wasted from lack of support.
I understand that you have to have local connections with the area. Alot of these lost soles have travelled here for a better life putting them in a catch 22 situation, the housing situation is dire as it is, they are just not building council houses no more compared to the rest of the market. Rich people work for their money while others spend it on drugs and are unable to work and support themselves as a result because of their addiction.

@@Storm.Z.4uyou think the homeless get thousands in benefits every month ?
I'm pretty sure if they were on benefits they wouldn't be on the streets to be honest there like pigeons on the street, cast out by society as there no longer needed.

I lived in brighton during 2012, london were transporting people who were living rough down to brighton! They completely abandoned people on the coast and left these humans to rot, ut was so horrific and all the aid services were so overwhelmed
Your right they "cleaned the streets" for the 2012 games so the visitors would not see the real problems...
Happens in a lot of coastal places. Not the land of milk and honey councils think it is😑
They shipped me off to Birmingham from Brighton in 2014! 😂
YES YES Can relate. I was attacked by convicted criminals, one of whom was mentioned in the national news as mugging the elderly in shared council accommodation and my life put in danger by the authorities!
Agreed , and actually it s about of a sell out by oli doing this when he knows these people can’t do it for money !!! I love his videos but I’m a little bit gutted as I got the feeling it’s a bit of a sell out this better help !!! I know it’s about getting paid but yeah it defo should be free
There have also been a lot of issues with better help specifically. Lack of professionalism from the therapists and them not handling more serious issues appropriately.
Plenty of free accessible charities in Brighton.

What a fantastic guy Paul Young is. A man with vision, strength, kindness and an eye to spot the "phoney" beggars. If only our councils and politicians could show so much care and have his drive.
Paul is an inspiration mate 🙏
What is a phoney beggar please?
Drugs don’t seem like a huge problem here like in US
I know Keo, it's heartbreaking to see him living rough, like he said he's a intelligent dude and deserves better
Paul is an inspiration on so many levels ❤
I never thought somewhere like Brighton would have a homeless problem .great content wendall
It’s gone up a lot in the last ten years
Always had huge problems...alcahol..drugs...it's a depressing town..I won't visit again.
It has done for many years, it's just that it's getting worse
It’s renowned for it.
Wendall you're doing such amazing work. Thanks for these videos.

some absolutley kind folk out there, helping the needy and less fortunate ...love your chanel lots of love and respect from Australia
Ive been homeless in and around London and the south , the most recent spell was for four years only ending two years ago.
I have nearly always managed to be part of a crew and squat somewhere.
It's not easy, but it seems to suit my temperament more than being an individual rough sleeping (although I have opted for that occasionally fleeing the squat for the sake of safety and sanity!)
So Brighton takes a really dim view of squatters.
