[Overheating test info below!!!] I have listened to many videos talking about overheating issue with the a6700, but you need to take these informations with some precaution. It is hardly depens of what kind of shooting and settings you are using. I am glad that this did not stop me from buying the device as the way i am using it, overheating would be probably hardly an issue for me. One thing you have to consider is all is about compromise. So if you want the longest shooting times, you need to make sure that you are not using anything that could makes overheating higher. Here are a list of potential candidate (additionnal tests needed to confirm this) to make overheating worst: using high compression codec like h265 (XAVC HS 4K), using external HDMI, using external usb-c PD (camera operation would need potential voltage conversion creating heat?), using lcd higher display brightness (sunlight), using wifi/bluetooth, using evf with high frame rate, disable camera power save mode, etc. I made some testing using airplane mode on, no hdmi connection, shooting 4k video in default camera shooting mode, tested on a fully charged battery with no usb connection, lcd in default mode, not using evf at all (lcd always on), lcd fully opened and battery door opened to make heat a way to evacuate as much as possible. I used XAVC S 4K codec for all these 3 first tests. The camera has been updated with latest 1.01 firmware. I used the default 16-50 power zoom lens that came with my camera. warning: these tests are artificial, as i was shooting a still image (with a person) using human recognition autofocus and zebra exposition configured to see when overexposing. In this artificial scenario, where the lens autofocus motor is almost not running (shooting a still image!) and power zoom not used either. These tests were just to check the best possible shooting time i could get. For each test, i am waiting several hours to make sure the camera is at ambient temperature and using a 100% charged battery (coming with the camera). Here are the 3 tests i made and result (using a sandisk v60 extreme pro card), all shooting test made inside at 22C: 4k 24p 100Mb/sec 10 bits 4:2:2 = 2hr 19mn 49s, no overheating, recording until battery completely exhausted then camera turned off 4k 30p 140Mb/sec 10 bits 4:2:2 = 2hr 9mn, no overheating, recording until battery completely exhausted then camera turned off 4k 60p 200Mb/sec 10 bits 4:2:2 = 2hr 4mn, overheating and turning off while there was around 1% battery left! In my case, the only long shooting situation i may have are inside at this temperature most of the time. Outside, i would never shoot for a long time but only for short clip at a time while the camera is turned off to cool down. So for my use case with 4k video, this is more than enough for me. Understand that these are optimal shooting times, but there is plenty of margin for me. Doing the same test with exactly the same setup conditions of the camera, but using instead the h265 XAVC HS 4K: 4k 24p 100Mb/sec 10 bits 4:2:2 = 2hr 16mn, no overheating, recording until battery completely exhausted then camera turned off 4k 60p 200Mb/sec 10 bits 4:2:2 = 23mn 32s, overheating and turning off (battery at 77% left!)! Doing the same test with exactly the same setup conditions of the camera, but using instead the h264 XAVC S 4K with a connected 30W PD supply on USB-C: 4k 24p 100Mb/sec 10 bits 4:2:2 = test not done as no problem with 30p in the same conditions. 4k 30p 140Mb/sec 10 bits 4:2:2 = 3hr 50mn, no overheating, recording until SD card completely full! 4k 60p 200Mb/sec 10 bits 4:2:2 = 1hr 0mn 18s, (instead of 2hr 4mn with no power supply connected )overheating and turning off! So, we can see how much the h265 XAVC HS 4K codec makes the camera overheat at 60p in the exact same conditions as compare to using the h264 XAVC S 4k codec, 23mn32s vs 2hr 4mn. But in 24p, almost the same result than with the XAVC S 4K codec!!! Using an external power supply at 60p XAVC S 4k codec makes the recording time much shorter.
Could you maybe also test 4k 60fps with XAVC HS 4K at 45M 4:2:0 10bit? (thats what I am using on FX30 to save space). Would like to know if the a6700 could be used too without overheating.
That is so disappointing. Can the government just reveal the aliens already. We're gonna need alien tech if we want to improve the overheating performance.
a superb video that is clearly establishing the heating problem of the A6700 for video. So sad, I'm a fan of the A6000 series but have wanted to do documentary work, and really wanted to get the a6700.
The camera getting hot on the outside is actually good (silver linings). It means that a camera cage would actually help with the heat dissipation and a fan could very well solve the overheating issue completely.
I'm a stills only guy, if I record a very rear video, I'll do it in 1080p, so overheating is not an issue for me. The a6700 is a fantastic hybrid camera, much more suited for photography. I think content creators/videographers should get the FX30 or it's full frame big brother, the FX3. In my opinion, the alpha series cameras which are without active cooling (i.e without a fan) are built for stills and some ocasional short video clips, and NOT intended for wedding videography or more than half an hour recordings in 4k60 with high bitrate. 4k120 on the a6700 is more or less a PR gymmic, not a real feature. I think that overheating is a big issue also on the ZV-E1, because of the lack of active cooling. Because I have only crop e mount lenses, I'll stick with sony's apsc lineup of cameras, and this camera is superb
So I have ran multiple overheating tests since I got my 6700. In temps 75 and below i have had no overheating in 4k24 and 4k60. 4k120 I got 20ish minutes. Outdoors here in Georgia(southeast USA) 90°f 70% humidity 4k24 got 37 minutes before overheating. 4k60 I got 28 minutes constant record. Have not tried 4k120 outdoors yet. I have preordered the Ulanzi cooling fan and going to test the cooling effect once it arrives.
@rsmith02 I havent tested the 8bit. All of my tests were done at the highest settings possible. I would assume it would add to the record time as the unit isnt working quite as hard under those settings. As to how much of a difference im not sure. I might give that a test along with 1080 in the upcoming couple of weeks.
Thanks for this useful review! So, to sum up, the things seem clear: 1. Have $2000-ish, want to do serious, long-form video with no overheating worries? --- Just get the FX30! 2. Have $2000-ish (a bit less), need to do quite short 4k60, 4k120, and are photo-centric? --- Get the a6700! 3. Have $2000-ish (a bit more), want to do short bursts of vlogging, want the best IBIS (active / enhanced), want the best sensor readout speed and image quality in low light? --- Get the ZV-E1! 4. Have $2000-ish (a bit more), need full-frame quality, but are ok with slower sensor readout, and with 4k60 cropped? --- Get the A7 IV! Am I missing something or am I wrong?
If video is your jam, the FX30 is fantastic! I have been pleasantly surprised by how well the colors match with the FX3. I knew this A6700 was going to be hot potato.
@@nitailevi8001 Not sure either. But I can tell you that the AF on the FX30 is unbelievably good. I had the A7RV with the newest AF features and I actually found it cumbersome because there were too many options.
when I first heard about the a6700 I was a bit bummed that I own the (little) bigger FX30 - but now I am actually very happy. I mostly shoot video outside so I the a6700 would have really not been a good fit for me.
Thank you for making this video. I was leaning towards the 6700 as a hybrid camera for traveling and filmmaking but as I’m more video focused I‘ll probably go FX30. It looks more badass too 😄
Tnx for video. My experience is the next. RUclips streaming 4.2.2 140M 10Bit 2160p 30 FPS HDMI Camlink 4K SLog3 with lut in OBS - 1h 08min. Monitor is always ON. Temperature in the room is approximately 20C. Another test The only difference is 25 FPS. The camera worked for 1 hour 40 minutes. Thermometer appeared. But I turned off the stream. Tired of it 😅 I think camera fan from AliExp can solve this issue.
🎉 great video and most in line with most of the other reviews. I guess this makes sense considering the camera low price and great specs. Interesting that Undone edit his video due to the overwhelming fact that for everyone else the camera overheat.
Yes, camera overheat like crazy in hot sunny day, but still did tons of good footage and pictures, because it is so fast & accurate, if it has better cooling system and better battery efficiency it would be perfect, but then probably would have to spent 2400$ instead of 1400$. For me as a hobby camera, it is great and real improvement over my old a6600 in almost every use case scenerio, except hot days which are very rare in my country.
The overheating is really a bummer. 99% of the video I shoot is outdoors. For sports highlights it seems that this would just not be a viable option. The FX30 would work, but I am a hybrid shooter, so I guess back to the drawing board it is.
You're welcome. I don't do much photography so I don't test that out for this channel. I would guess it wouldn't overheat in just photo mode, but I haven't personally tested it.
This is really disappointing but to be expected? I guess? I mean it’s like they just want you to spend more money on the better performing cameras however, I am still positive. This Camera has a place for someone, and I think that’s what’s really important, would I buy it? Probably not. But you know there’s so many people out there that don’t need anything more than this. ive done tests on my channel also in the uk. so very different in real world temp and humidity but also if it does overheat ie 4k120 mine did 15 mins and just popped out the battery put a new one in and it was fine straight on and recording again.
The Titla A6700 Lightweight Kit cage comes with a fan for $180. The FX30 still overheats in direct sunlight like all small cameras. You literally have to have a LOT of metal around the camera to get the heat away, it's like a CPU or GPU in your desktop. People are mainly complaining that the A6700 is overheating in 60fps, not p24/p25/p30. You will need to use a dummy battery and V-Mount battery with metal camera cage to record long videos. I'm perfectly with that limitation. The HDMI generate heat live everything that pushes that many bits through it, but it's less than internally recording.
From my experience it usually does save what was already recorded, but I can't guarantee that. Also, I'd rather have a camera that you don't have to worry about overheating if you are recording long sessions like a video podcast.
I think in this price bracket, if you want a camera to do photos and video, you'd be better off choosing the Panasonic S5 mark II. Mine has been solid as a rock, even in quite extreme summer outdoor heat here in Valencia, Spain. Unless you already invested in Sony lens. Otherwise, like you said, Sony wants you to buy both, the FX30 for video, and the a6700 for photos. The A7IV should be the do it both hybrid, but for many it isn't, because it also overheats. I think it's pretty shoddy that Sony have yet again released a broken by design camera, because this overheating has to be by design at this point. They know the overheating makes it largely unusable for serious video work, and do it anyway, to sell their cameras. Then it's left up to honest reviewers to actually test the IRL overheating, but some customers will still get caught out. Because it's not like they print reasonable real-world heat specs (4k, 30 or 60fps in temps of 30c+, in direct sunlight). What Fujifilm do with the optional fan accessory is a bit more honest.
@@Rim00909E It is. The FX30 is still a great choice for video, if wanting to go with those lens options. Though, in favour of Panasonic, all other IBIS are subpar compared to Panasonic. And the 6k video gives some nice options and future proofing. So it very much depends on what you are shooting. If setting up as a run and gun cinema rig, S5 II is a great choice too. Especially if needing multiple cameras.
Fuji added an optional fan... but I've used xh2 at 8k highest bit rate for commercials and company training videos, long run times, and I've never had an overheating issue, with no fan. I've used an a7iv recently for work.. not a lot of tests, but it didn't overheat on me. Panasonic has always been great for video. They had 4k working with unlimited recording time long before other companies implemented it... so it's there thing lol. I think the thing here is, the a6700 is a $1,300 sony camera. So maybe a price of $900 for the same specs from another manufacturer. So people shouldn't expect it to be capable of competing against $2,000 bodies.
80 degrees, with humidity, in the sun...yeah that can be pretty rough on any camera shooting in 4k. Especially with no internal fan. I'll have to test the HDMI port issue on mine. I haven't recorded for that long before, but I do see others on reddit have similar issues. For livestreaming it's probably better to use the USB-C anyway if you can. The camera is still a hybrid. I mean...it's not really supposed to do everything the best. There will be drawbacks. Most people doing pro work probably won't pick this up since there's only one memory card slot to begin with.
So I tested mine via the USB Livestreaming. I did 4k30p, dummy battery, tripod, screen flipped out, and i'm on 1.01. My room is like 72-75 degrees. Overheated after about 20 minutes. I've seen others say there's doesn't overheat when using USB. So maybe I just have a bad camera.
My R7 will do just over 35 min at 4k60 and no overheating on the lower modes. Love the camera for my bird photography. Picked up a R6mk2 and its good in low light but overheats faster and the drop in megapixel is noticeable enough when I need to crop. Its a nice camera but if I am only picking one its going to be the R7.

I've been using my A6400 as livestreaming and conferencing camera with HDMI out to Elgato CamLink4K into RødeCaster ProII, with dummy battery - it ran all days, no problem, I used 4K 25p. I'm definitely getting the A6700 for the livestream that's around 1,5 hours long, I'll be using is for the main headshot, _but_, as you pointed out, the A6700 is a photo centric camera which is.. great in my case. I'm also drooling for that 120p and AF AI and to have it as an all-in-one camera for my trips. It's great to be aware of the overheating risks and to know how to avoid it the best way. Cheers!
@@Josh_Sattin I do realise the advantages of the FX-30 but I'm now hooked on the Auto Framing that's an amazing feature when teaching and doing workshops like I do, and then the option of having the A6700 as a hybrid axe when travelling, also a big thing. Tomorrow might be a .. big day with the release of a new Sony camera on Aug.29th, the A7C mark2.. weäll see what that brings 🙂
@@HomesickMac Yeah the auto framing is cool. I think it will be better in future iterations. I wasn't personally happy with how it frames a person in the first round of it. It puts the person's head in the center. But that might be me being picky and wanting full control. I would take unlimited record time over auto framing. A7CII will most likely just be a A74 in a smaller body with the newest Sony features.
a6400 4.2.0 8Bit My ZV E10 also 4.2.0 100M 8Bit and NO problem with streaming 2160p 30FPS HDMI Camlink 4K without overheating. I have a6700 and if streaming with 4.2.2 140M 10Bit 2160p 30FPS my experience - 1h 08min. If 25FPS - 1h 40min. But if use 4.2.0 8Bit I think will be OK with a6700.
Mine has overheated using both the HDMI and the USB-C for livestreaming. After about 1hr w/monitor hooked up via HDMI. It actually overheated faster using the USB-C...about 30 minutes. Gotta send it back. This is pretty disappointing because I never had issues with the a6600.
Hey Josh, I'm Yuri. Your video was pretty much what I was searching for. I have a music related channel. I come from an a6400 and I just purchased myself an a6700 for multiple reasons like the upgrade in dynamic range, 4k slowmotion, usb-c instead of micro-usb, UHS-ll sd cards instead of UHS-l sd cards, the bigger grip, battery, extra buttons, better autofocus,... plus, my a6400 has started acting a bit weird because of water and sand getting on it during traveling. Now, my only concern with the a6700 is the overheating. I make a lot of reaction videos too, that pretty regularly exceed that 20min mark. In addition, every 3 weeks, I do a livestream on youtube for like 3 hours. Do you know what quality I should be able to put out with this camera? It probably also depends on the internet connection...? Anyways, recently I also started recording the livestream internally as well because that quality is just 10x better than from the actual livestream. That way, I can edit it afterwards. But I assume this is going to be difficult with the a6700? I remember the Canon EOS R5 also had overheating issues but that kinda got fixed through software updates I believe? Do you think this could also be improved on this model in the future? With my a6400, I think only once, in over 4 years that I used it, I got the overheating notification so overheating was never really a big issue. Hope you can give some advice on this. I don't think this is a situation where Sony can fix the overheating the firmware. The camera gets really hot and Sony isn't known for those kind of firmware updates either. If you are interested in a Sony APS-C camera for video, I would recommend the FX30. Very reliable.

It just seems so strange to me that the a6400, in a smaller body, from 4 years ago, does not overheat during a 3 hour livestream whilst internally recording in 4k 24fps and the a6700 can't do that... In that sense, it seems like a downgrade... I guess I'll see what happens
@@YBPlaysMusic an FX-30 might have been a better choice, but, there's a few things you can do that can probably make it work fine for you when recording long 4k videos. If you leave the LCD screen out to the side, open out all the camera doors (SDcard, HDMI, etc ...), run from external power not battery, Also, there's even people making 3D printed accessories than will allow you to mount and run a fan on it (Fuji actually sell an accessory that does something similar). But if you don't plan to use it for photography, and video it's primary, you could consider returning it, if possible, and getting an FX-30. It's the better video tool.
they defiantly need something like 4k line skipped mode or 4k crop 60 and 24. in case it overheats you can switch setting and get a little worse quality but you can continue shooting. Ulanzi Fan looks like solution but not the most convenient one. i bet some people gonna disassemble it and install fan inside the body somehow. like bmpcc 4k with a screen that you cant tilt and there is a product that you can make bmpcc 4k screen external. but if Sony can do it with a frimware update, that would be great
I haven't used an a6600 in a long time, but I don't remember any overheating issues. I use a ZV-E10 often in my studio without any issues. It has the same sensor as the a6600.
… you can’t compare it, no 10 bit 4:2:2 for the a6600, uses old video codec’s etc. The a6700 produces much better image quality, especially if you want to colorgrade the footage. 🤷🏼♂️
@@weddingvideography7747… hm, it is a good B cam for weddings, of cause. so the a6700 is also. if you use it indoor for wedding in 24p/30p is should be no problem. on a warm day for outdoor shooting you could switch the old codecs and 8 bit 4:2:0 - like you do with the a6600.
I think having fans in all alpha cameras should be mandatory. They're pretty low key and tiny but do wonders, and it shouldn't be too expensive to have.
Hi! How is overheating without HDMI but with dummy battery? Like concert recording scenario. Results are as expected yet still disappointing. I recently managed to record over 2h of 4k25p with a cage and a dummy battery on a firmware-modified Sony a6300 on a worm summer evening in a church (around 75F).
It will largely depend on the ambient temperature and if you are in the sun or not. Without HDMI it will run similar to battery only. You might get a little bit longer of a run time because of the dummy battery, but not sure.
… so maybe you should use the new a6700 like your old „high performance“ 6400? 🤔 8 bit 4:2:0, no 120p or 60p, old codecs, no s cinetone, no AI based AF, smaller battery and with tilting the screen only - and it will run also 8 hours straight without any sign of overheating!!! But you habe to swap the battery 6 times … 🤣🤣🤣 …

@@TW-iu9zy a6600 has the larger battery and no overheating. Yes you're limited to 8-bit so Cine 2 instead of Slog (which is still quite good looking with decent dynamic range).
@@rsmith02 You can't compare a camera that does 8 bit 420 and a camera that does 10 bit 422, it's completely different video files, and the 10bit is a larger file that requires the camera to work harder.
This like a notebook with a rtx3080ti inside. A stupid design about 3-4 years ago when some manufacturers trying to add a monster inside a body like Notebook/thin laptop/smartphone etc.
@@Josh_Sattin Ok thanks for letting me know. I intend to purchase the Sony A74 alongside the Panasonic S5 Mark ii x and Canon R6 Mark 2 and the future Nikon Z5 Mark 2. I like mid range camera's as they do a bit of everything. Also I like to see who has the best 8 bir aswell as 10 bit and 12 bit internally
For most and average people, I do not hink we would film 40K 24p (or even more) over 10mins straight outdoor. People who know what they are doing would just do b roll shots for 3-10 secs and move on. Dont get me wrong .... the tests are valid and all but it is under extreme scenario and most people would not use it that way.
@@ntsan definitely, wedding. And also travel, sport, wildlife / nature, music events, even fashion shoots. Never mind the fact that over 80F isn't even seasonal, it's the norm in many tropical areas. Or even places where people choose to do shoot films because of the sunny climate. Even many typical not ideally air-conditioned office / studio / industrial environments will be get up 80F in Summer. And in many indoor filming environments, you might not want to run fans or A/C during recording because sensitive mics will pick up the noise. I think Sony are foisting these overheating cameras on people by only testing them at 25C. Imagine if computers, phones, tablets, networking devices, video displays, overheated after 30 minutes everytime it was over 80F ;)
I don’t consider any of these use cases to be normal or average in my opinion. These sound quite specific work to me. Dont get me wrong…I do own a6700 and I love it but I do certainly understand its limitation. However I am no sony fanboy and I know what it cant do. As an “average” users (i.e. travel photography, vlog and broll) I never have any overheating issue for the past 2 weeks and I live in South East Asia where temperature is damn hot during this time of the year.
Thanks for some real testing. I think most people over estimate how long they need to shoot video. No one wants to see 2 hours of continuous video, let alone 15 minutes.
@@ntsan Find something better to do than sit around for 2 hours for something that may or may not happen. For a sound bite that nobody cares about. Normal people don't waste their lives doing that, nor do they record for 2 hrs straight.

@@ntsan This is a hybrid camera for normal people. Sony makes video centric cameras. Video jobs doesn't mean you shoot for 2+ hrs continuously without any break. If it does, then someone didn't plan very well and a hybrid camera is not something you would be looking at unless you add external battery and recording in which case there is no issue for overheating. And no, people like me don't think there is no editing, people like me don't waste time shooting 2+hrs straight.

All future cameras from any manufacturer should have a internal fan period. You spent all your hard earn money to buy a unreliable camera. Why? I don't care how good the camera/specs if you can't use it when need it. Company needs to produce a good camera with fan built into it damn it.
Clearly this camera is intended for people who shoot mostly photo and 1080p video, and occasional 4k video. If you want 4K all day, FX30 is there, as Josh said. All you have to do is spend more money.
No, I don't think that manufacturers should be compelled to do so. If you spent your hard earned money on a camera that isn't meant for what you primarily do with a camera, that's on you and your lack of research. Cameras with fans that are mostly video-oriented already exist. Buy one. Period.

@@BrucePhung Yes, it is advertised as 4K, and it does in fact shoot in 4K. However, they did not say anything about overheating. Just like when a car is advertised as 25 miles per gallon, and you drive it uphill, you realize you get more like 15 miles per gallon. But the car manufacturers don't tell you that, do they?

For each test, i am waiting several hours to make sure the camera is at ambient temperature and using a 100% charged battery (coming with the camera). Here are the 3 tests i made and result (using a sandisk v60 extreme pro card), all shooting test made inside at 22C:
4k 24p 100Mb/sec 10 bits 4:2:2 = 2hr 19mn 49s, no overheating, recording until battery completely exhausted then camera turned off
4k 30p 140Mb/sec 10 bits 4:2:2 = 2hr 9mn, no overheating, recording until battery completely exhausted then camera turned off
4k 60p 200Mb/sec 10 bits 4:2:2 = 2hr 4mn, overheating and turning off while there was around 1% battery left!
In my case, the only long shooting situation i may have are inside at this temperature most of the time. Outside, i would never shoot for a long time but only for short clip at a time while the camera is turned off to cool down. So for my use case with 4k video, this is more than enough for me. Understand that these are optimal shooting times, but there is plenty of margin for me.
Doing the same test with exactly the same setup conditions of the camera, but using instead the h265 XAVC HS 4K:
4k 24p 100Mb/sec 10 bits 4:2:2 = 2hr 16mn, no overheating, recording until battery completely exhausted then camera turned off
4k 60p 200Mb/sec 10 bits 4:2:2 = 23mn 32s, overheating and turning off (battery at 77% left!)!
Doing the same test with exactly the same setup conditions of the camera, but using instead the h264 XAVC S 4K with a connected 30W PD supply on USB-C:
4k 24p 100Mb/sec 10 bits 4:2:2 = test not done as no problem with 30p in the same conditions.
4k 30p 140Mb/sec 10 bits 4:2:2 = 3hr 50mn, no overheating, recording until SD card completely full!
4k 60p 200Mb/sec 10 bits 4:2:2 = 1hr 0mn 18s, (instead of 2hr 4mn with no power supply connected )overheating and turning off!
So, we can see how much the h265 XAVC HS 4K codec makes the camera overheat at 60p in the exact same conditions as compare to using the h264 XAVC S 4k codec, 23mn32s vs 2hr 4mn. But in 24p, almost the same result than with the XAVC S 4K codec!!! Using an external power supply at 60p XAVC S 4k codec makes the recording time much shorter.
Could you maybe also test 4k 60fps with XAVC HS 4K at 45M 4:2:0 10bit? (thats what I am using on FX30 to save space). Would like to know if the a6700 could be used too without overheating.
I don’t have easy access now to test that specific bitrate condition, but i may attempt to test it next week...

Or just stop shoehorning sensors and processors like this into tiny cameras. Certainly, this seems like an easier one to crack than the alien thing.
If you want not overheating use 8bit recording, if u record 10bit u will overheat with tinny camera
a superb video that is clearly establishing the heating problem of the A6700 for video. So sad, I'm a fan of the A6000 series but have wanted to do documentary work, and really wanted to get the a6700.

The camera getting hot on the outside is actually good (silver linings). It means that a camera cage would actually help with the heat dissipation and a fan could very well solve the overheating issue completely.
I'm a stills only guy, if I record a very rear video, I'll do it in 1080p, so overheating is not an issue for me. The a6700 is a fantastic hybrid camera, much more suited for photography. I think content creators/videographers should get the FX30 or it's full frame big brother, the FX3. In my opinion, the alpha series cameras which are without active cooling (i.e without a fan) are built for stills and some ocasional short video clips, and NOT intended for wedding videography or more than half an hour recordings in 4k60 with high bitrate. 4k120 on the a6700 is more or less a PR gymmic, not a real feature. I think that overheating is a big issue also on the ZV-E1, because of the lack of active cooling. Because I have only crop e mount lenses, I'll stick with sony's apsc lineup of cameras, and this camera is superb

So I have ran multiple overheating tests since I got my 6700. In temps 75 and below i have had no overheating in 4k24 and 4k60. 4k120 I got 20ish minutes.
Outdoors here in Georgia(southeast USA) 90°f 70% humidity 4k24 got 37 minutes before overheating.
4k60 I got 28 minutes constant record.
Have not tried 4k120 outdoors yet.
I have preordered the Ulanzi cooling fan and going to test the cooling effect once it arrives.
Is there any difference between 8-bit and 10-bit? Wondering if it would give you extra time to shoot say 8-bit Cine 2 with XAVC S.
@rsmith02 I havent tested the 8bit. All of my tests were done at the highest settings possible. I would assume it would add to the record time as the unit isnt working quite as hard under those settings. As to how much of a difference im not sure. I might give that a test along with 1080 in the upcoming couple of weeks.

+1 Endorsement for FX30. The 6700 is a photo camera that can sorta do video. The FX30 is video first. The right tool for the job.

when I first heard about the a6700 I was a bit bummed that I own the (little) bigger FX30 - but now I am actually very happy. I mostly shoot video outside so I the a6700 would have really not been a good fit for me.

Monitor is always ON.
Temperature in the room is approximately 20C.
Another test
The only difference is 25 FPS.
The camera worked for 1 hour 40 minutes.
Thermometer appeared.
But I turned off the stream. Tired of it 😅

Yes, camera overheat like crazy in hot sunny day, but still did tons of good footage and pictures, because it is so fast & accurate, if it has better cooling system and better battery efficiency it would be perfect, but then probably would have to spent 2400$ instead of 1400$. For me as a hobby camera, it is great and real improvement over my old a6600 in almost every use case scenerio, except hot days which are very rare in my country.

The overheating is really a bummer. 99% of the video I shoot is outdoors. For sports highlights it seems that this would just not be a viable option. The FX30 would work, but I am a hybrid shooter, so I guess back to the drawing board it is.

You have to mention the codec. It makes a huge difference if you use 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 for example.

ive done tests on my channel also in the uk. so very different in real world temp and humidity but also if it does overheat ie 4k120 mine did 15 mins and just popped out the battery put a new one in and it was fine straight on and recording again.
The Titla A6700 Lightweight Kit cage comes with a fan for $180. The FX30 still overheats in direct sunlight like all small cameras. You literally have to have a LOT of metal around the camera to get the heat away, it's like a CPU or GPU in your desktop. People are mainly complaining that the A6700 is overheating in 60fps, not p24/p25/p30. You will need to use a dummy battery and V-Mount battery with metal camera cage to record long videos. I'm perfectly with that limitation. The HDMI generate heat live everything that pushes that many bits through it, but it's less than internally recording.

From my experience it usually does save what was already recorded, but I can't guarantee that. Also, I'd rather have a camera that you don't have to worry about overheating if you are recording long sessions like a video podcast.

I had heard some people got good runtimes using XAVC S, I was also curious about 4:2:0 10 bit runtimes as I consider this a good alternative.
I think in this price bracket, if you want a camera to do photos and video, you'd be better off choosing the Panasonic S5 mark II. Mine has been solid as a rock, even in quite extreme summer outdoor heat here in Valencia, Spain. Unless you already invested in Sony lens. Otherwise, like you said, Sony wants you to buy both, the FX30 for video, and the a6700 for photos. The A7IV should be the do it both hybrid, but for many it isn't, because it also overheats. I think it's pretty shoddy that Sony have yet again released a broken by design camera, because this overheating has to be by design at this point. They know the overheating makes it largely unusable for serious video work, and do it anyway, to sell their cameras. Then it's left up to honest reviewers to actually test the IRL overheating, but some customers will still get caught out. Because it's not like they print reasonable real-world heat specs (4k, 30 or 60fps in temps of 30c+, in direct sunlight). What Fujifilm do with the optional fan accessory is a bit more honest.
AF video tracking Panasonic is still subpar to Sony. Also much bigger system with far less lens options.

@@Rim00909E It is. The FX30 is still a great choice for video, if wanting to go with those lens options. Though, in favour of Panasonic, all other IBIS are subpar compared to Panasonic. And the 6k video gives some nice options and future proofing. So it very much depends on what you are shooting. If setting up as a run and gun cinema rig, S5 II is a great choice too. Especially if needing multiple cameras.
Fuji added an optional fan... but I've used xh2 at 8k highest bit rate for commercials and company training videos, long run times, and I've never had an overheating issue, with no fan. I've used an a7iv recently for work.. not a lot of tests, but it didn't overheat on me. Panasonic has always been great for video. They had 4k working with unlimited recording time long before other companies implemented it... so it's there thing lol. I think the thing here is, the a6700 is a $1,300 sony camera. So maybe a price of $900 for the same specs from another manufacturer. So people shouldn't expect it to be capable of competing against $2,000 bodies.

80 degrees, with humidity, in the sun...yeah that can be pretty rough on any camera shooting in 4k. Especially with no internal fan. I'll have to test the HDMI port issue on mine. I haven't recorded for that long before, but I do see others on reddit have similar issues. For livestreaming it's probably better to use the USB-C anyway if you can.
The camera is still a hybrid. I mean...it's not really supposed to do everything the best. There will be drawbacks. Most people doing pro work probably won't pick this up since there's only one memory card slot to begin with.
So I tested mine via the USB Livestreaming. I did 4k30p, dummy battery, tripod, screen flipped out, and i'm on 1.01. My room is like 72-75 degrees. Overheated after about 20 minutes. I've seen others say there's doesn't overheat when using USB. So maybe I just have a bad camera.

R7 is really good with long recording
My R7 will do just over 35 min at 4k60 and no overheating on the lower modes. Love the camera for my bird photography. Picked up a R6mk2 and its good in low light but overheats faster and the drop in megapixel is noticeable enough when I need to crop. Its a nice camera but if I am only picking one its going to be the R7.

I've been using my A6400 as livestreaming and conferencing camera with HDMI out to Elgato CamLink4K into RødeCaster ProII, with dummy battery - it ran all days, no problem, I used 4K 25p. I'm definitely getting the A6700 for the livestream that's around 1,5 hours long, I'll be using is for the main headshot, _but_, as you pointed out, the A6700 is a photo centric camera which is.. great in my case. I'm also drooling for that 120p and AF AI and to have it as an all-in-one camera for my trips. It's great to be aware of the overheating risks and to know how to avoid it the best way. Cheers!

@@HomesickMac Yeah the auto framing is cool. I think it will be better in future iterations. I wasn't personally happy with how it frames a person in the first round of it. It puts the person's head in the center. But that might be me being picky and wanting full control. I would take unlimited record time over auto framing.
A7CII will most likely just be a A74 in a smaller body with the newest Sony features.
a6400 4.2.0 8Bit
My ZV E10 also 4.2.0 100M 8Bit and NO problem with streaming 2160p 30FPS HDMI Camlink 4K without overheating.
I have a6700 and if streaming with 4.2.2 140M 10Bit 2160p 30FPS my experience - 1h 08min.
If 25FPS - 1h 40min.
But if use 4.2.0 8Bit I think will be OK with a6700.
Mine has overheated using both the HDMI and the USB-C for livestreaming. After about 1hr w/monitor hooked up via HDMI. It actually overheated faster using the USB-C...about 30 minutes.
Gotta send it back. This is pretty disappointing because I never had issues with the a6600.

I come from an a6400 and I just purchased myself an a6700 for multiple reasons like the upgrade in dynamic range, 4k slowmotion, usb-c instead of micro-usb, UHS-ll sd cards instead of UHS-l sd cards, the bigger grip, battery, extra buttons, better autofocus,... plus, my a6400 has started acting a bit weird because of water and sand getting on it during traveling.
Now, my only concern with the a6700 is the overheating. I make a lot of reaction videos too, that pretty regularly exceed that 20min mark. In addition, every 3 weeks, I do a livestream on youtube for like 3 hours. Do you know what quality I should be able to put out with this camera? It probably also depends on the internet connection...?
Anyways, recently I also started recording the livestream internally as well because that quality is just 10x better than from the actual livestream. That way, I can edit it afterwards. But I assume this is going to be difficult with the a6700?
I remember the Canon EOS R5 also had overheating issues but that kinda got fixed through software updates I believe? Do you think this could also be improved on this model in the future?
With my a6400, I think only once, in over 4 years that I used it, I got the overheating notification so overheating was never really a big issue.

I don't think this is a situation where Sony can fix the overheating the firmware. The camera gets really hot and Sony isn't known for those kind of firmware updates either. If you are interested in a Sony APS-C camera for video, I would recommend the FX30. Very reliable.

It just seems so strange to me that the a6400, in a smaller body, from 4 years ago, does not overheat during a 3 hour livestream whilst internally recording in 4k 24fps and the a6700 can't do that... In that sense, it seems like a downgrade... I guess I'll see what happens
@@YBPlaysMusic an FX-30 might have been a better choice, but, there's a few things you can do that can probably make it work fine for you when recording long 4k videos. If you leave the LCD screen out to the side, open out all the camera doors (SDcard, HDMI, etc ...), run from external power not battery, Also, there's even people making 3D printed accessories than will allow you to mount and run a fan on it (Fuji actually sell an accessory that does something similar). But if you don't plan to use it for photography, and video it's primary, you could consider returning it, if possible, and getting an FX-30. It's the better video tool.

What about sn external camera fan, I understand they close to double the usage time?
they defiantly need something like 4k line skipped mode or 4k crop 60 and 24. in case it overheats you can switch setting and get a little worse quality but you can continue shooting. Ulanzi Fan looks like solution but not the most convenient one. i bet some people gonna disassemble it and install fan inside the body somehow. like bmpcc 4k with a screen that you cant tilt and there is a product that you can make bmpcc 4k screen external. but if Sony can do it with a frimware update, that would be great

I haven't used an a6600 in a long time, but I don't remember any overheating issues. I use a ZV-E10 often in my studio without any issues. It has the same sensor as the a6600.
… you can’t compare it, no 10 bit 4:2:2 for the a6600, uses old video codec’s etc. The a6700 produces much better image quality, especially if you want to colorgrade the footage. 🤷🏼♂️

If you are going to do mainly video work I would suggest FX30, A7S3 or FX3.
I think having fans in all alpha cameras should be mandatory. They're pretty low key and tiny but do wonders, and it shouldn't be too expensive to have.

Hi! How is overheating without HDMI but with dummy battery? Like concert recording scenario. Results are as expected yet still disappointing. I recently managed to record over 2h of 4k25p with a cage and a dummy battery on a firmware-modified Sony a6300 on a worm summer evening in a church (around 75F).
It will largely depend on the ambient temperature and if you are in the sun or not. Without HDMI it will run similar to battery only. You might get a little bit longer of a run time because of the dummy battery, but not sure.
what codec and bitrate for 4K24p?
that camera a6700 is trash for video.. the a6400 i have used it for 8 hours straight and no overheating.
… so maybe you should use the new a6700 like your old „high performance“ 6400? 🤔 8 bit 4:2:0, no 120p or 60p, old codecs, no s cinetone, no AI based AF, smaller battery and with tilting the screen only - and it will run also 8 hours straight without any sign of overheating!!! But you habe to swap the battery 6 times … 🤣🤣🤣 …

This like a notebook with a rtx3080ti inside. A stupid design about 3-4 years ago when some manufacturers trying to add a monster inside a body like Notebook/thin laptop/smartphone etc.

For most and average people, I do not hink we would film 40K 24p (or even more) over 10mins straight outdoor. People who know what they are doing would just do b roll shots for 3-10 secs and move on. Dont get me wrong .... the tests are valid and all but it is under extreme scenario and most people would not use it that way.

@@ntsan definitely, wedding. And also travel, sport, wildlife / nature, music events, even fashion shoots. Never mind the fact that over 80F isn't even seasonal, it's the norm in many tropical areas. Or even places where people choose to do shoot films because of the sunny climate. Even many typical not ideally air-conditioned office / studio / industrial environments will be get up 80F in Summer. And in many indoor filming environments, you might not want to run fans or A/C during recording because sensitive mics will pick up the noise. I think Sony are foisting these overheating cameras on people by only testing them at 25C. Imagine if computers, phones, tablets, networking devices, video displays, overheated after 30 minutes everytime it was over 80F ;)
This camera is advertised to be used for live streaming. Guess what, real world meetings are normally an hour or longer and back to back
Interviews I do are usually an hour (though indoors is normal). It has to be able to do well over that.
I don’t consider any of these use cases to be normal or average in my opinion. These sound quite specific work to me. Dont get me wrong…I do own a6700 and I love it but I do certainly understand its limitation. However I am no sony fanboy and I know what it cant do. As an “average” users (i.e. travel photography, vlog and broll) I never have any overheating issue for the past 2 weeks and I live in South East Asia where temperature is damn hot during this time of the year.

I was playing with the menus in winter when I first got the camera and it overheated on its o, no recording.

Thanks for some real testing. I think most people over estimate how long they need to shoot video. No one wants to see 2 hours of continuous video, let alone 15 minutes.
No one want to see full 2 hours video but u need to capture the best sound bite of the 2 hr presentation to a 2 min video, what will you do?
@@ntsan Find something better to do than sit around for 2 hours for something that may or may not happen. For a sound bite that nobody cares about. Normal people don't waste their lives doing that, nor do they record for 2 hrs straight.

@@ntsan This is a hybrid camera for normal people. Sony makes video centric cameras. Video jobs doesn't mean you shoot for 2+ hrs continuously without any break. If it does, then someone didn't plan very well and a hybrid camera is not something you would be looking at unless you add external battery and recording in which case there is no issue for overheating. And no, people like me don't think there is no editing, people like me don't waste time shooting 2+hrs straight.

I’m not a pro or record long hrs so this camera is perfect 😅
Trust that you don’t need to record long hours, others have gotten overheating within 10 mins at 4k30 which is poor.
Or just stick right with the a6600
soo strange . mine old A6500 can record 4k24 with 90F and 80% of humidity outside for almost 30 mins....
… yes, but not in 10 bit 4:2:2 - to compare the shooting time of the a6700 and a6500 you have to film with the same settings in 8 bit 4:2:0. 🤷🏼♂️

@@mex5341 Thermals are just physics, there is no new secret sauce when it comes to thermals. They have been the same for years.
Test it also with the “AI” auto focus is in action.. this camera is overheating because of the AI auto focus. Dont test on non moving subject.
I did live stream to twitch 4K 60 overheated with a dummy battery after 30 min and it was on hdmi indoor

The Panasonic S5II is better than the FX30 and cheaper. It has a fan, full frame and better video stabilisation.

U can still use ef lens like Sigma 18-35 1.8 with adapter

All future cameras from any manufacturer should have a internal fan period. You spent all your hard earn money to buy a unreliable camera. Why? I don't care how good the camera/specs if you can't use it when need it. Company needs to produce a good camera with fan built into it damn it.
Clearly this camera is intended for people who shoot mostly photo and 1080p video, and occasional 4k video. If you want 4K all day, FX30 is there, as Josh said. All you have to do is spend more money.
No, I don't think that manufacturers should be compelled to do so. If you spent your hard earned money on a camera that isn't meant for what you primarily do with a camera, that's on you and your lack of research. Cameras with fans that are mostly video-oriented already exist. Buy one. Period.

@@BrucePhung Yes, it is advertised as 4K, and it does in fact shoot in 4K. However, they did not say anything about overheating. Just like when a car is advertised as 25 miles per gallon, and you drive it uphill, you realize you get more like 15 miles per gallon. But the car manufacturers don't tell you that, do they?
