I am an American, from the Boston area. In 1954 I bought the 45rpm Rock Island Line / John Henry record for 89cents. I was 14 at the time. I still have it and now I have the 3 CD set as well. Lonnie Donegan is legendary.
The late John Peel. The Radio 1 DJ who actually felt the vibe of the current music wave. He enabled so many groups from the 60s, 70s and 80s to gat some AirPlay and actually break through! Legend is about right for John. X
Thanks for this visual reminder of Lonnie Donegan. I first saw Lonnie in 1955 at a local Jazz Club in Wood Green. Chris Barber, Pat Halcox Monty Sunshine Micky Ashman, Ron Bowden and Ottilie Patterson. I have been a fan ever since.
I just found this 4 Song EP 45rpm in mint cond.(Deluxe Decca Sleve) at a small bookshop. Never actually heared this orig vers. .. only Johnny Cash. Cool Find.
He never lost it did he? One of the all time greats! very underappreciated in today's world given his huge importance in the history of British music! As all the major British bands that followed in the 60s have said, Elvis Presley was the one who made them want to be musicians, but it was Lonnie Donegan who made them feel they could be!
Yes, practically every major rock guitarist in that first phase was inspired by him: Harrison, Clapton, Page, Beck... To my mind the most influencial musician of the 20th century for that reason.
@Carthsting Your dead right I cant believe how young he looks.I remember him in the fifties when I was only 12 or 13. and he was great, all we had in uk apart from trad jazz. He started with Chris Barber as the banjo player.
the beeb tried to make a fool out of that man. they didnt wish to understand about the civil? war lonnie taught all the pop stars , evin some of them listened. thanks lonnie
Ha ha Jamie theakston needs a towel to dry his ears!!! Ha ha least he was honest and said he never heard of him, but did it respectfully. Not in a way that some would do now. It amazes me the energy Lonnie puts into his performances even after 40 so years of doing it the heart is still in it! Great stuff! They don't make them like this anymore RIP :(

This is simply amazing, if one song changes the history of rock and roll, pop, blues or folk, it's this song! Go on Lonnie!
Two legends in this clip - Lonnie Donegan and John Peel
I was lucky enough to see his Glastonbury set, quite by accident, stumbling around very stoned, so glad I did as he was excellent.

the most influential musician of all time. The real king, and I am an Elvis fan. P.S. Lonnie was one of Elvis's favorites.

Absolutely true what JP says here - 1960 Lonnie took us from the grey drabness of the 50s and set things up for the Beatles and the Stones!
Thank you Lonnie Donegan from my heart....
My grandfather..Guy Rodgers...was the head mechanic for the Rock Island Lines till his death in 1940...95 year old mom says they owed him money
