I have this entire series. Great television that has that old movie serial feel. The color episodes are absolutely amazing to see. They had such vision for the future. They could have saved a fortune but decided to film in color anyway even though it wouldn't be seen in color for another decade. Absolute Genius move. George Reeves was the most confident Clark Kent that has ever appeared on TV. His style was a classic one that never fades. The fact they were able to have him actually "fly" instead of just going cheap and have it be animated was a groundbreaking innovation for special effects in television. I think what really made it all work was George. He was just instantly likeable. That smile was so infectious you can't help but smile as well.

There was also a problem that caused a disagreement between Phyllis Coates and one of the show's producers. She was asked not to do a particular role during the show's hiatus and she agreed at first. But the producer of the other role talked her into it. After she did it the previous producer found out about it and was quite miffed and refused to let her do Lois Lane in the 2nd season. As far as I'm concerned, Phyllis Coates was not only really hot but a very good Lois Lane who was quite the reporter always putting herself out to get a story and it didn't matter what happened.

For approximately 24 hours straight one of the UHF station showed nothing but Superman.
Marathon TV is common now. I stayed up all night recording it on my VCR.
Jack Larson and Noel Neil hosted the marathon.

I recently recognized Noel Neill in an small part (uncredited) of a movie playing on TCM. An American in Paris 1951 with Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. She plays an American college student studying in France, her Junior year in France... She attempts to critique Gene Kelly‘s character Artist Jerry Mulligan’s painting. To be truthful when I watched Superman as a child, I didn’t notice there were two different Lois Lane’s, I was too busy looking at Superman!

As great as Chris Reeve was as Clark Kent, this Clark was engaging enough that I would easily watch a show with just him and not Superman (which, if you know what a Superman/Superboy fan I am says a lot). Not as much so though with the more campy/kid's season version though. The only thing I'd change is that I do wish some other hero or supervillain (especially Batman, Braniac or a then-popular-now-obscure superhero) had shown up at least once.

In the first black and white photo you show of Jimmy Olsen feeling Superman's muscles, did you notice that the "S" on his chest is all ripped up? I think that this photo was taken late in 1953, just befor they switched to color. In several of the older shows, from the first two seasons, (which were all shot in black and white), some of the last episodes filmed also showed the ripped costume. It really detracts from the "mind set" that Superman AND his costume, (being made from blankets wrapped around baby Kal-El, and therefore coming from Krypton), would ever be able to tear. On the DVD sets that I own, these tears are explained by Commentary given by Gary Grossman that, as the show was to soon switch to color, the BROWN AND TAN costume was allowed to wear out. The costume was made in brown and tan to look good on the black and white televisions of the day.
Fun Fact, when the shot the television show, "Star Trek", as one of the first color broadcasts on NBC, the people filming had to pick colors that would also look good in black and white, as that was the predominant kind of sets that people owned then. There were some early test footage of various effects that look really off when viewed in black and white. So, they had to adjust what makeup was used to look good in both mediums.

I have never understood why it is that supporting performers, who sign on to be supporting characters in shows, somehow get it into their heads that whatever the main character is being paid is too much unless they too start getting more. Strikes against the program seem stupid to me. IF you want more money than you signed on for, then you should have to re-negotiate your contract. IF at that time, you have made you character super valuable--as the first Lois proved she had done when they offered her much more money to return--then you can get it. IF you haven't then the producers should say, okay, if you don't want to work for what we are paying since your contract is up, you can just leave. At they point they introduce a NEW character and a replacement performer. It really should be that simple. I will hazard that this way of working in Hollywood--where they give in and pay (as they did the 3 supporting players 50.00 each per episode) is the beginning of what we now see as 'equity'. They were paying people who did not have the same value to the success of the program higher wages simply because the star was getting higher wages. They were working toward 'parity'. That is a mistake, as we see today.

@@fayekramer8314 Farrah Fawcett is another one--even though there is an argument to be made that SHE rather than the other two was the top star, I would, however, contend that the show's continued success after she left proves that she was not. Henry Winkler, Fonzie on Happy Days, did it the right way. He was signed on as a lower tier supporting actor, playing a 'throw away' character, but HE made the FONZ one of the top reasons to watch the show. When he went to re-new his contract, he made a deal that was almost as good as Ron Howard's.
