When you haul, welded axles are a big no no. And i know people might say that's acceptable, but it's not in my book. I saw a snapped axle aftermath once, probably old age and excessive use, and it was not pretty.

In 1990, my father, my brother, and I bought a 22 foot Bayliner cuddy cabin on a galvanized two-axle trailer. The boat had been used at the Georgia coast, and all the hydraulic brakes, brake lines, and master cylinder were rusted beyond repair. I pulled the boat from the coast back to northwest Georgia with my high-top GMC conversion van. With no trailer brakes, that boat pushed us every time I hit the brakes. Took the rig back to m father's house, and we replaced all the brake components. After all those repairs, those hydraulic surge brakes worked great. All I had to do was barely touch my van's brakes, and that trailer immediately slowed or stopped everything. Can't wait to one day owning a trailer with electric brakes to be able to compare the two sytems

Bought a perfectly good, used car for $1500. Nice everywhere, but brakelines had rusted through. Was quoted $1200 to repair it. I replaced every single brake line with copper and new fittings for $200. Took me a day.

I have had a brake adjusting tool now for over 60+ years, used it about three times. used the screwdrive for same task. over 500 times on my own stuff and OP's. stuff. As a professional mechanic myself who does it everyday I can tell you the brake adjustment tools are worth their weight in gold. Sometimes a screw driver just won't work because of the angle and you have to pull out the brake set and find which one works.

Probably for the best. I saw at least 5 chotckies, one of them being the welded trailer axle. Seeing as Andrew wears his tools at their limit, imagine having one of those snap (it can happen). If you can't trust your tools, you can't do your stuff.
It looks great, he should put another slightly bigger one outside above the door, I think that would look good as well. Maybe lights in it for the dark times ^^
I have the utmost respect for Andrew and the way he methodically works through all the problems that he encounters during his servicing/maintenance videos and I also enjoy watching Andrew do his work too, plus it’s also a real treat to see his wonderful dogs 🐕 out and about enjoying themselves.
The axle that had been welded on was most likely narrowed to fit the trailer . Great setup for the hydraulic brake system using a Line-Lok like drag racing vehicles use to lock their front brakes to do burn-outs in the water box to heat their slicks . Great video Andrew . Love how well you treat Levi and Cody , man's best friend .
They can be shortened or lengthened that way, and it is perfectly safe. My dad recycled axles for 40 years. You can even weld just one end of the sleeve, and it works fine. We rented them that way, so you can adjust them to the trailer, rather than getting ticked that the axle you rented is a half an inch longer than the gap. Though, if it is going to be your permanent axle, I would still do the second weld, just after it was installed. Probably less wear and tear on everything else. The forces in the center of the axle are very small compared with near the hubs.
Shop tip from my father's garage. Now that you have that new creeper, take your old one and build a wood or metal rim around it. You can then use it to hold ALL the tools you will be using when working under something. You can roll it out of the way or to the other side of a repair.
And without any maintenance, lol. I wish. I don't think there is a material out there strong enough to make brake pads out of to withstand 50 years but I get what he means. Apart from brake pads and discs, disc brakes should not need any other maintenance, but they do.

You can do this. Its not rocket science! I mean that sincerely with no disrespect to the people who do it (It is what I do). The biggest thing in the way is thinking you can't. Go to Sears or Harbor Freight and get some tools and go take your lawn mower completely apart, looking at each piece and seeing what it does and why it is there. You learn as you go. Every project I start, I learn new things and I have been wrenching since I was a child. That is how I learned so much, just doing it and figuring it out. With channels like Andrew's and the INSANE amount of DIY content RUclips has, you can literally do anything if you have just a little common sense and a will to work and get your hands dirty.

It is glaringly obvious that as good as you treat your dogs, Andrew - Cody is feeling a little neglected. It is very cute to see him pushing his way in while you are trying to work. You gotta love Labs. That creeper you got is really nice. Having that adjustable head rest makes a huge difference.
I have two tandem wheel trailers both use electric drum brakes they don’t have reverse braking problems uphill as the brakes only operate when brakes are activated. The brakes are proportionally applied by a brake controller in the tow vehicle which is fully adjustable for the load and road conditions. All trailers over two tonnes must have a battery system that applies its brakes if it separates from the tow vehicle. No need for hydraulics, with that we also have a mechanical hand brake for operation without tow vehicle. I’m sure you must have these over there. I know all about adjusting Drum Brakes. My first 5 cars had drum brakes & I learned from my dad how it was done. Once they were adjusted well, they worked very well. Good hard brake pedal & solid stops. Anthony
Hey Andrew, I do agree with you that there are many things that should be guaranteed to last the life of the vehicle (you used 50 years as an example), only real reason i see that companies do not do that is because they cant predict the driving style of every single person, many people are very hard on their vehicles which in turn reduces the lifespan of certain parts like brakes, transmissions, suspension, etc. So they dont do that because if they did, i could see many people who do not properly maintain their vehicles and who use their vehicles irresponsibly trying to take advantage of that "guarantee". thats just my thoughts though

And Andy here is a poster boy for treating equipment and personal vehicles like a piece of shit. As much as I like the guy and I do because I can relate to him except in that area. I do not abuse any equipment, very personal vehicles we own. And I will not tolerate an employee abusing equipment. That is one of my major pet peeve’s. I have fired more than one guy on the spot for abusing equipment and I mean deliberately abusing it. Told him to come on get in my pick up I’m taking them back to the office and having our office manager Gloria cut them there check for this week that they just worked and, their severance pay.

Having been enslaved by my dad to work on trailer axles and tires since I was 4, I can finally say something useful about one of Andrew's videos. 1. You take off the axle by the spring eyes. You do this by taking off the nut and then hitting the bolt good and hard. It will rocket out, and could hit someone or something, so be warned. And wear gloves, or you could get bloody, metal likes to bounce back. A center punch may be necessary if the bolt does not go on its merry journey across the garage immediately. The hammer has to be moving fast for the bolt to beat the falling axle, like pulling the table cloth out while the plates are on the table. You don't take the hubs off first or the springs. It is just much easier to get it out and then work on it. Unless you are just going to do a brake job or replace a bad bearing. Nothing will happen generally after the first bolt is removed, but when you get the one out across from it on the other side of the trailer, it is going to fall and may swing toward you so anticipate that. And stay out from under the hub. And don't be geniuses that forget to put the trailer on stands first... Can't believe I have to say that, but... And you do have to take the tires off first, just not the hubs, springs, linkages or rockers. Well, often if there are linkages, you take them off together with the bolts. His trailer did not have link plates. 2. And maybe this should be #1, as it is important. You WANT TO SPLICE THE AXLE in preference to putting the spring seat too far from the hub. There is a huge amount of force between the hub and that seat...vastly more than there is in the center of the axle. Trailers are made in a wide array of widths. 99 inches is popular now days, as that is the legal limit. But they could be anything. 3. Welding that sleeve is not a problem at all. Most axles are recycled these days. They may be reused several times. As I said, the forces in the center are miniscule compared to the forces at the outside. When these things bend, and I have seen plenty, they bend between the hub and the spring seat. If you want higher reliability, make that distance as small as you can get away with. But don't let the tire rub the frame or the spring. 4. When we rented-out axles, we actually had "slider axles" for them to use. The sliders have that center sleeve, but only one end is welded. Then you can telescope them out to the size you need. No need for that second weld. Never had a problem. Though we had a few sizes of those, so we give people something that will still have 6 inches in the sleeve. 5. You may on occasion have to cut one U-bolt. If the spring is not attached to the trailer, it is much easier to get that off. But even if you have to cut one, the spring will come out without doing anything to the other or only loosening it just a little. It may take a crack of the hammer though. No need to ever cut both U-bolts. 6. If someone is building a trailer for a big boat or some other heavy load, use the single leaf springs. I mention this because it is counterintuitive. But the single leaf is stronger. It is always the spring with the eye that breaks. That one you want strong, and it is, when there is only one. The reason for multiple springs is mostly ride quality. We rarely ever saw a single leaf bent or broken. Lots of the others.

Probably for the best. I saw at least 5 chotckies, one of them being the welded trailer axle. Seeing as Andrew wears his tools at their limit, imagine having one of those snap (it can happen). If you can't trust your tools, you can't do your stuff.

The axle that had been welded on was most likely narrowed to fit the trailer . Great setup for the hydraulic brake system using a Line-Lok like drag racing vehicles use to lock their front brakes to do burn-outs in the water box to heat their slicks . Great video Andrew . Love how well you treat Levi and Cody , man's best friend .
They can be shortened or lengthened that way, and it is perfectly safe. My dad recycled axles for 40 years. You can even weld just one end of the sleeve, and it works fine. We rented them that way, so you can adjust them to the trailer, rather than getting ticked that the axle you rented is a half an inch longer than the gap. Though, if it is going to be your permanent axle, I would still do the second weld, just after it was installed. Probably less wear and tear on everything else.
The forces in the center of the axle are very small compared with near the hubs.

Shop tip from my father's garage. Now that you have that new creeper, take your old one and build a wood or metal rim around it. You can then use it to hold ALL the tools you will be using when working under something. You can roll it out of the way or to the other side of a repair.

And without any maintenance, lol. I wish. I don't think there is a material out there strong enough to make brake pads out of to withstand 50 years but I get what he means. Apart from brake pads and discs, disc brakes should not need any other maintenance, but they do.

You can do this. Its not rocket science! I mean that sincerely with no disrespect to the people who do it (It is what I do). The biggest thing in the way is thinking you can't. Go to Sears or Harbor Freight and get some tools and go take your lawn mower completely apart, looking at each piece and seeing what it does and why it is there. You learn as you go. Every project I start, I learn new things and I have been wrenching since I was a child. That is how I learned so much, just doing it and figuring it out. With channels like Andrew's and the INSANE amount of DIY content RUclips has, you can literally do anything if you have just a little common sense and a will to work and get your hands dirty.

I have two tandem wheel trailers both use electric drum brakes they don’t have reverse braking problems uphill as the brakes only operate when brakes are activated. The brakes are proportionally applied by a brake controller in the tow vehicle which is fully adjustable for the load and road conditions. All trailers over two tonnes must have a battery system that applies its brakes if it separates from the tow vehicle. No need for hydraulics, with that we also have a mechanical hand brake for operation without tow vehicle. I’m sure you must have these over there.

I know all about adjusting Drum Brakes. My first 5 cars had drum brakes & I learned from my dad how it was done. Once they were adjusted well, they worked very well. Good hard brake pedal & solid stops. Anthony

Hey Andrew, I do agree with you that there are many things that should be guaranteed to last the life of the vehicle (you used 50 years as an example), only real reason i see that companies do not do that is because they cant predict the driving style of every single person, many people are very hard on their vehicles which in turn reduces the lifespan of certain parts like brakes, transmissions, suspension, etc. So they dont do that because if they did, i could see many people who do not properly maintain their vehicles and who use their vehicles irresponsibly trying to take advantage of that "guarantee". thats just my thoughts though
I could not agree more with your comment. Especially when it comes to the way people treat their vehicle. And Andy here is a poster boy for treating equipment and personal vehicles like a piece of shit. As much as I like the guy and I do because I can relate to him except in that area. I do not abuse any equipment, very personal vehicles we own.
And I will not tolerate an employee abusing equipment. That is one of my major pet peeve’s. I have fired more than one guy on the spot for abusing equipment and I mean deliberately abusing it.
Told him to come on get in my pick up I’m taking them back to the office and having our office manager Gloria cut them there check for this week that they just worked and, their severance pay.

Having been enslaved by my dad to work on trailer axles and tires since I was 4, I can finally say something useful about one of Andrew's videos.
1. You take off the axle by the spring eyes. You do this by taking off the nut and then hitting the bolt good and hard. It will rocket out, and could hit someone or something, so be warned. And wear gloves, or you could get bloody, metal likes to bounce back. A center punch may be necessary if the bolt does not go on its merry journey across the garage immediately. The hammer has to be moving fast for the bolt to beat the falling axle, like pulling the table cloth out while the plates are on the table. You don't take the hubs off first or the springs. It is just much easier to get it out and then work on it. Unless you are just going to do a brake job or replace a bad bearing. Nothing will happen generally after the first bolt is removed, but when you get the one out across from it on the other side of the trailer, it is going to fall and may swing toward you so anticipate that. And stay out from under the hub. And don't be geniuses that forget to put the trailer on stands first... Can't believe I have to say that, but... And you do have to take the tires off first, just not the hubs, springs, linkages or rockers. Well, often if there are linkages, you take them off together with the bolts. His trailer did not have link plates.
2. And maybe this should be #1, as it is important. You WANT TO SPLICE THE AXLE in preference to putting the spring seat too far from the hub. There is a huge amount of force between the hub and that seat...vastly more than there is in the center of the axle. Trailers are made in a wide array of widths. 99 inches is popular now days, as that is the legal limit. But they could be anything.
3. Welding that sleeve is not a problem at all. Most axles are recycled these days. They may be reused several times. As I said, the forces in the center are miniscule compared to the forces at the outside. When these things bend, and I have seen plenty, they bend between the hub and the spring seat. If you want higher reliability, make that distance as small as you can get away with. But don't let the tire rub the frame or the spring.
4. When we rented-out axles, we actually had "slider axles" for them to use. The sliders have that center sleeve, but only one end is welded. Then you can telescope them out to the size you need. No need for that second weld. Never had a problem. Though we had a few sizes of those, so we give people something that will still have 6 inches in the sleeve.
5. You may on occasion have to cut one U-bolt. If the spring is not attached to the trailer, it is much easier to get that off. But even if you have to cut one, the spring will come out without doing anything to the other or only loosening it just a little. It may take a crack of the hammer though. No need to ever cut both U-bolts.
6. If someone is building a trailer for a big boat or some other heavy load, use the single leaf springs. I mention this because it is counterintuitive. But the single leaf is stronger. It is always the spring with the eye that breaks. That one you want strong, and it is, when there is only one. The reason for multiple springs is mostly ride quality. We rarely ever saw a single leaf bent or broken. Lots of the others.
