i just discovered him. listened to "orange" and now everything else. What an underrated talent. His playing is so lyrical. No flash. just composition and storytelling.
I met Tony in 98 when he was playing bass with the Bill frisell Trio, Sex Mob, John Lurie's Lounge Lizards, Ricky Lee Jones and many others. He was also playing guitar with and producing albums for Jesse Harris and the Ferdinandos. But the best stuff he's ever done was his own 2 solo records, released on Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley's indie label Smells Like Records. The guy can write and play the f*** out of a song. Just ask Norah Jones or Feist or Bonnie Raitt or Ani DiFranco or Willie Nelson.
Such an amzing sound for 3 people, just bass, drums and honest guitar. No effects pedals or anything, just a Tele plugged straight into a Princeton. Utterly superb control too. Reminds me of the extended jams Television used to play.
Hadn't heard this guy before. He appears to "hear" the guitar in a different way ushering in sounds and concepts not previously attributed to the instrument (like Jimi and Jaco did). It is also obvious that he has the courage to pursue and put forth his own musical vision, something that is never easy. I will certainly be listening to him much from now on.
no 1s here totally agree. I know his drummer, Josh, who suggested I drop by to hear Jim. The guy blew me away, and I haven’t really quite figured out WHY yet. He’s amazing, odd, weird, brilliant, riveting. Meh...I’m just going to keep going to see him....
Yes, you have heard this guy before. He was on CAKE's 1998 record Prolonging the Magic, and a bunch of other 'name' artists' recordings. Jim's a musical chameleon, heavily influenced by Roy Buchanan, but he plays nothing like Roy. He's also one of the sweetest monsters you'll ever meet.
@@thedevilinthecircuit1414 Yes, that could very well be (that I have heard him before and didn't know it). Thanks for the heads up. I'll watch for him in other contexts.
@@thedevilinthecircuit1414 Hey man, thanks for the facts. Been listening since 10 Gallon Cats. I still have Cake on regular rotation. Never knew the connection
jim should be on the cover of some of these guitar mags. instead of these metal shredders etc. who are put on time after time to sell mags..and yall know who I'm talkin about ok.. thanks jim for some melody and interesting jams ..
... technique, history and igniting the fans. Even the w@ankers in these comments - and their twee comments based on having no life whatsoever. I've seen Jim set fire to a cloud...a crowd
The red lights...the snare brushes and reverb guitar...you just know David Lynch finds this so stimulating.
Tim Tompkins and Dennis Hopper is doing something unmentionable.
Is it future? Is it past?
Absolutely superb.I’ve been a big fan of Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton and I’m so pleased that Jim is carrying on with their legacy.Marvellous x
Gotta love Campilongo.
An artist and his acoustically electrified boat paddle. Both so good and so classic
I could listen to Jim all day PLUS he's a super nice guy.
Like a fever dream...an awesome fever dream. So great from start to stop.
First song reminds me of the middle section of Joe Walsh's "The Bomber"....atmospheric, floating reverb chords in an ambient cloud.....Jim is amazing!

And he seems to be an all around nice guy too!
Check out Bill Frisell like Campilongo, he plays with a very mature style... I love guitarist who just play...who a mature approach like Campilongo
One of my all time favourite Tele players.
My man Tony Scherr on bass. He will never know he's my man..but seeing him play in the Living Room one night in '13 changed my life. Love that guy.
Plays with Bill Frisell as well.

This is the elder statesman that you really need to listen to. Impeccable taste and style.
he's unelected
Wow, rocking out here. I dig it!
Jim's bands always groove deep & grok rightly. Thanks for posting
Glad I found this. Saw him play with Duke Levine at Lizard Lounge in Cambridge earlier this month.
This should have much more likes... amazing feeling and guitar playing - all the right notes are hit when he plays, it seems.
Bucket list.
Love this! The recording is as tight and in your face as the music.
What an amazing group!
I have been trying to understand Jim's music for the longest time, I don't get it and I still don't but I like it. Could that be possible?
Always big fan of Jim. Great playing & sound as always.
Patron saint of the telecaster.
very good!!!!!
Saw Jim at Lunatico last night... he's great! Very much in the vein of Nels Cline and Tom Watson. I'd love to see him collaborate with Mike Watt.
Hoy es el día que conozco a este Genio!
National Treasure
Most beautiful sounds there gentlemen
jim, you are a GENIUS !!!!!!!
Who knew you could get that many sounds out of a telecaster.? Only Jim....what a player, what a musician...WoW...
I'd say it's the ONLY guitar you can get all those sounds out of.
Wow ... what a find.... once you lose yourself in what he's doing it's quite a trip
pretty dam flawless,go Jim.
Glorious!! I love your music!! Thank you!
love it love it love it!
as always a top to bottom stellar performance, but man that riff closing out the set is a MONSTER

atarirob he does use a Wah pedal, tho...
Mookie & I Love Jim!
Fabulous !! Thank you!
Sweetness.
A truly original voice on his instrument. He can spawn no imitators.
Favoloso Jim
Beautiful
jim's grandfather was a vibrato pedal
I admire the bravery of the bassist. He seemed perplexed by the eclecticism of the improvisation but persisted
Tony plays with Bill Frisell so he is pretty adept. He's (Tony) an insane guitar player himself.
They know exactly what's going on.

I nearly fell asleep...
A true great.
Such a purist - one cable between the Tele and Princeton - not even a tuner will stand between them ;) Thanks for posting this performance
He uses pedals too

Exactly.
Jim, очень красиво❤С уважением музыканты города Архангельска!
Don’t forget it
FAbuloso!!!!
Just 1 minute into it and I'm thoroughly captivated (as usual)...
2 things jumped out. Intro song is very Hank Marvinesque. And his hands look absolutely gigantic.

New facts good- gotta check. Minimalism at it's maximum right here
