- I landed the Cessna 150 Aerobat on the Space Shuttle runway! This can only be done with special permission from NASA and is a very rare occaison.
It was an amazing experience and a huge bucket list flight. I'm glad I could record it and share with you all.

Philipp Meyer actually the tower guys keep pretty busy. They have on average 400 aircraft operations a month, not to mention all the other testing activity taking place on/ near the runway that most people don’t know about.

The longest landing flare you will ever perform!!! Next time ask them if you can see how many takeoffs and landings you can perform on the 15,000 ft runway!! Start fly stop, start fly stop!
Haha I really should have tried to do as many touch n go’s as possible. The runway went on forever!
FloridaFlying my longest one was in Utapo Thailand. 13,000ft in my P-3 Super B Aircraft. It was designed for the B-52’s and launched the bombing missions for the Vietnam war. We performed a takeoff and landing and had about 2,000 feet left!! I don’t remember the width but it was wide too.. 1983!! Oh Thailand!!
God I miss Thailand. I had so so much fun there.
Jonathan Day - We we’re deployed deployed to Cubi Point in the Philippines for 6 months when I was attached to VP-4 Skinny Dragons. We spent 3 days in Thailand and we landed in Otapo but we actually stayed in Pattya Beach. I hope I’m spelling it correctly. What a great time in 1982. Oh to be young again and in Thailand with all that fun!!! Ohhhhhh!

That runway is 15,000ft long
That’s half the height of the cruising altitude of jets
When you’re cruising at fl300 and look out the window and see just how far down the land is, half that is the length of that runway
And the shuttle travelled the whole length of that runway in 0.6 of a second while in space
You must be joking right? 0.6 fking seconds??? Maybe 6 seconds????
@@ramnepali6018 in space 0.6 is right when landing it was much slower but it was always fast because of it relative small wings compared to its mass. But in orbit yes it had around 8 km/s which is around 26246.7 ft/s which means yes in 0.6 is right.

@@ramnepali6018 the actually landing was slightly above 300 ft/s which means at this speed it would need 50 seconds of course it stopped at the end of the runway so it was on average much slower. And I'm not in the aerospace business and my english is far away from good so it can be that I misinterpreted something.
Ok a few clarifications, I meant 0.6 seconds at its orbital velocity
15,000ft is a big runway, most runways as you said are 9,000-12,000ft but rarely ever go much further above that.
Yes the longest is 18,000ft but this is still one of the longest in the world and is in the top 5 maybe 3 I can’t remember too well
What an honor that must have been. This approach is definitely on the bucket list. Been a Cape Canaveral resident for 20yrs and cant tell you how many times I just wanted to request clearance there just because. Cool little Bat your club has. I took upset training in one through Dagmar Kress at KFXE back in '98. The original Aerobats are getting rare. Great Video...subscribed.
Damn - not too many people outside of the elite of the military and astronaut corps have landed on that runway. Tremendous opportunity!
Having just visited KSC last month for the first time, I got completely jealous watching you float above that massive runaway, work the assembly building in the background. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Haha, you know while I was at NASA they said an F-104 actually overshot the runway if you can believe that. Did you receive the shirts yet? Let me know if you are satisfied with the quality

Do pilots always have to have a co pilot? Can you fly solo?
Yes I think all single engine airplanes only need 1 pilot. I just brought my brother for fun
Yes one of the first things pilots learn to do before getting their private pilots license is learn to fly solo, I'm working up to my first solo flight soon
It really depends, but private planes never need 2 pilots, I always fly a Cessna solo
Jets and airplanes weighing over 12,500 lbs gross weight require two pilots. Single engine planes like this can be flown solo.
@Agent J never heard of that. Certainly airliners will never be flown single pilot. Even most single pilot rated business jets are typically flown with two pilots for insurance reasons.

Do you actually have to say that youre lined up and waiting? I thought the tower would just say cleared for takeoff when the runway is clear
You might be right. Although I couldn’t see the tower so I thought I’d give them a heads up
it's mostly a formality to keep the pilots used to hearing atc comms
The ground cleared him to line up and wait, so the report from the pilot is kinda expected. Obviously the tower wouldn't let him waiting all day if he didn't reported he was lined up and waiting...
At 11:22, in the upper part of the screen, you can see the rail line that was once used to bring in the solid rocket booster segments. It's an extremely narrow rail that goes across the river.

Fun fact: That "aggressive" pull up on take off, here in Brazil is called American Takeoff (Decolagem Americana)... no idea why...
A friend of mine got his father's large Cadillac and we drove down the shuttle landing strip soon after it was finished. This was before the shuttles started landing on it.They had had an open house that day. Sometimes gators would get on the strip.
Such nice memories on the days I did my PPL in 150 and 152 planes here in South Africa. Must be an experience to land on that enormous runway. Need at least a 150 to get from one end to the other.
Can I get a tl;dr on how to do this? I was just doing touch and goes at KCOI and I was admiring the VAB all day today. I know it was a special occasion, but how did you find out about the chance?
TheCptCoy the airfield ARFF did aircraft familiarization training, and invited some local folks to bring aircraft in.

The owner of the school I rent from works for NASA so when the fire department was holding a special event he got his planes on a pre-approved list to land there

I lived in Titusville and worked at the VAB from 1966 to 1971. Of course the runway wasn't built until after I left. It was real a treat to ride with you guys. Lots of fun except for the god awful music you played for the whole trip. Why did you mess up some wonderful engine sounds and ATC calls with that crap? Anyway, thanks for the ride.

On such a special runway. Even for a Cessna 150, landing fees and handling charges must have been expensive, I would imagine.

That must have been the easiest landing ever. Landing a Cessna 150 on a runway that’s 15,000 feet long. Considering that even larger jets, such as the Boeing 747, the Airbus A380 and even the Antonov AN-225, land on much shorter runways.

NASA no longer manages the Landing Facility, Space Florida now manages and operates the Landing Facility and is developing it as a commercial spaceport.

No not impossible, but pretty rare. It would be nice if they open it up to more pilots. You could get about 10 touch n goes in the same pattern!

ᄋᄋ depends on the instructor, our batch instructor was chill however the other instructor for the other batch was very strict and shouted a lot

An OV-1D Mohawk had a fatal accident recently and had cold seats due to the same logistical issue. The pilot would have survived if his seats were hot and armed. Definitely a good call on althe authorities there.
