I unexpectedly lost my father less than a week ago. This was one of his favorite bands, and one of his favorite songs. I hadn't seen him in years but we connected for the last couple years via telephone. My phone was disconnected for lack of paying my bill, and that happened to be the last day of his life, where he sent me some text messages that I didn't receive until the next day, when he had already passed. I could never reply. Love you dad.

Can't really be "game-changers" when your entire sound is based on The Beatles' late '60s period. Jeff Lynne literally said that ELO's objective was to pick up where The Beatles left off. Plenty of music journalists have written about the homage they pay to the Fab Four. Hell, Wikipedia even has an entire page dedicated to how much ELO was influenced by them ("Jeff Lynne and The Beatles"). But yeah, ELO was great.

ELO is an odd entity, a band that was very popular back in the day that produced a lot of hits but now is rarely spoken about. Time to bring these boys back to the light. Much overdue.
I always get confused by that too. They sold like 100 million albums. And they barely get talked about, except for Mr Blue Sky as a song for commercials. It's really odd to me, as they're such a damn good group. I'm glad we can all enjoy their music and everything still of course
@@theoo.2019 Yes, but do you see anyone talk about any of their other songs? Do you see any music critics talking about them right now? I don't think so really.
Lol I get the reference with O.K. instead of okay. For those who don’t know: the higher educated folk of the 1800s (colleges and such), around the time of the invention of the telegram, used purposeful misspellings of words when they communicated. One of them was Olls Korrect (All’s Correct), which they short handed with OK. When the telegram came around, people would respond with the letters OK to show that they got the message that the other was sending. It’s fitting for a song about a crumbling of communication to use it. It’s like he’s trying to hold onto the connection for longer by responding with “all is good”. It’s especially supported when he says, “Can you let it ring a little longer?” Honestly though, I don’t think he meant it to be like that. If he did, props to you Jeff Lynne!
I was 15. I was beginning to feel. Feelings. ELO made it alright. In 1976 I got this album as a present at at a Xmas party and it introduced me into a new way of experiencing music. Jeff Lynne, thank you.
I bought a bunch of CDs in the late 1980s. El Dorado was in the mix. The clerk pulled that one out and said it was an excellent choice showing good taste in music. I still have the CD.
This song made me cry when I was in high school hoping for a girlfriend. It now makes me cry, 46 years later, when I reminisce about my 29-year marriage that ended in an unwanted divorce. If I live to be 92, there will probably be a new reason to cry when I hear this. And I'm okay with that.
I’m so sorry to hear that. I’m still searching for a girlfriend and I’ve got my heart set on a girl I’ve known for four years since we started freshman year, and then there was COVID, and I also had to go to a college prep school. I still try to connect with her, but we’re just so busy. I repeat, I’ve known her for 4 years, but it’s difficult for me to move on.
A New World Record of which this is from is their last good record. ELO jumped the shark with the follow-up, Out Of The Blue. It's Over and Sweet Is The Night harken back to better times but stuff like Turned To Stone could have been on the Xanadu Soundtrack.
Just posted this to my friend's facebook page. We were friends for 50 years when she passed a year ago. Today is her birthday. I hope she can hear this wherever she is and know one of our favorites is now more fitting than it was before. We loved this track!!
I love how he added in the line ringing at the beginning; it really adds to the song, for those of us old enough that we lived through a time where there were phones that didn't have an answering machine or voicemail, and the phone just rang and rang sometimes when there was someone we REALLY wanted to talk to.
That’s what I Love about this song is the old school ringing of the phone 📱 international sound I was in Japan 🇯🇵 called my mom in Ohio and it rang like that no voice mail nothing those were the days
One of ELO's greatest songs, full of emotional yearning. Jeff Lynne is an absolute genius. How can so many incredible songs come from the mind of one person? We are so blessed to have him.

But this song does take you back to when the phone was the primary means of communication (we also wrote letters, they just took a while, unlike the instant transmission of email). Remember only making long distance phone calls on the weekends because the rates were lower?
Just last month, NYC removed the final two public phone booths
There were many nights I used pay phones. Now it's about making sure your phone is charged up. Is it me that actually misses talking and hearing someone else's voice. Texting just seems impersonal.

ELO never got the accolades they deserved. They were game changers. Jeff Lynne was a musical genius.
Agreed..👍
Gary Anderson still is lol
Oddly, I didn't care for ELO in the 70's, but now, I can't get enough.
👍
I really don't think anybody believes me, but ELO is the most underrated group in musical history!!!!!

ELO is an odd entity, a band that was very popular back in the day that produced a lot of hits but now is rarely spoken about. Time to bring these boys back to the light. Much overdue.
Mr. Blue Sky has been way overused buddy, I think they have plenty of exposure nowadays

Telephone Line lyrics © Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC
Lol I get the reference with O.K. instead of okay.
For those who don’t know: the higher educated folk of the 1800s (colleges and such), around the time of the invention of the telegram, used purposeful misspellings of words when they communicated. One of them was Olls Korrect (All’s Correct), which they short handed with OK. When the telegram came around, people would respond with the letters OK to show that they got the message that the other was sending. It’s fitting for a song about a crumbling of communication to use it. It’s like he’s trying to hold onto the connection for longer by responding with “all is good”. It’s especially supported when he says, “Can you let it ring a little longer?”
Honestly though, I don’t think he meant it to be like that. If he did, props to you Jeff Lynne!
This song breaks my heart and makes me cry.
Thank you 😊

They thought Pink Floyd was ahead of his time. These guys are way beyond that.

I'm 78 and I still love it!
👍🇺🇸
it hurts to be a music lover sometimes
indeed
well then listen hear it again
+Rosemary Ochoa Wholly agree. Sometimes I'll dig up a song on youtube or where ever that makes me so nostalgic that I almost want to cry.
Tony Q thanks, we they just right on, and nailed it
+Rosemary Ochoa That's what's killer about music.
I have nostalgia to a time I wasn’t even alive...
Being nostalgic for a time when
you were not even alive...
... maybe that nostalgia rubbed off on you from a relative...
Great tune, huh!
That is purely poetic....beautifully said
The music was great! You was born late.
woah, same, I even put this song in a playlist I saved that's titled "nostalgia for a time you never lived"
I totally agree 100%
My cousin passed away earlier this year due to Covid and this song was one of his favorites. Everytime I play it I think of him. I love it myself. I feel close to him when I play this song.
Sorry for your loss ✝️👍🙏🏽
May he live on in this song. I'm sorry he's gone.
That is so gr8.I know he's there with you
I'm not generally an ELO fan, but this is one of the best songs ever written.
It is what most people want to say but they don't
this song makes my heart beat a different way
me to buddi
