    I have never heard of laryngeal massage, I'll have to give it a try. :) I know how important hydration is, but didn't know water had to absorb into the digestive system to hydrate your vocal cords! Steam is always so soothing when I have a sore throat.

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  5 лет назад +1

      You have so many good points, Lex! Steaming is wonderful and you can use this method even when your voice and throat feel fine (as a prevention). There are many people who don't know that hydration in the form of drinking takes time and therefore, they just drink before or during singing, which is not really helpful at that moment. And give laryngeal massage a go and let me know how it felt.

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  2 года назад +8

      I see two options here. You are either using your voice for too long for your current strength and endurance, or you are engaging muscles that are not needed for the vocal tasks so they get overworked and tender the next day. Watch your vocal effort and try to isolate control of the vocal structures from each other.

    I’ve just been sick and my throat is so horaseeee I work at a call center so I have to use my voice I really hope this is helpful I’ll update y’all ♥️
    After watching this entire video, the tips helped soooo much! You saved my life. My throat feels so much better. The first thing I did is pull out my facial steamer which helped tremendously, I started humming as well which helped sooth it a bit, you also said massage would help and it helped instantly I don’t know why I didn’t think of that sooner, I could feel my muscles were so tense. I did just get done working a 8hr shift and I was talking and cough all day.

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  Год назад +1

      I suggest that you give your voice as much break as possible outside of your work hours (if you cannot take sick leave). Also, speak to your doctor to deal with the cough because that can be affecting the health of the vocal folds and cause hoarseness, maybe some cough suppressants or something that eases the symptoms. Get well soon!

      This may sound cheesy, but don't scream a lot for weeks and don't speak loudly.
      Vocal fry is still one of those frontiers that I haven't had the opportunity to practice as I live in a share house. Still, after buying/watching Melissa Cross's videos, I learned a lot about how to build up this technique in such a way that you don't wreck yourself. I recommend her videos without question. I can't wait to build a vocal both and learn that technique myself.
      Besides these things, the tips in this video offer all the help you need if you ever have to recover again (given that I'm posting this reply 3 months after your comment was posted).

      Hi Dini, yes the laryngeal massage is a great technique for releasing tension. However, I would not use it right before your speech because your neck may be red from touching it and manipulating the larynx, which may not look great on the stage. But a couple of hours before your speech is a great option!

    I injured my voice by abusing it and had troubles for months...but recently I made some huge progress to the point where sometimes it feels almost like before..the one thing I started doing since I noticed these significant improvements is drinking Helichrysum italicum tea daily. It is known to have strong wound healing properties so I thought it can't hurt..and it seemed to work for me. I had an appointment today with a laryngologist and he said he couldn't see anything unusual at all. And just a couple of weeks ago my voice was so bad that I couldn't hit any high notes and when I tried to talk at first my voice wouldn't come through at all. Just wanted to share my experience here...

    Hey Katarina, I have been having a really sore throat after singing just a 50 minute set. It will continue to be sore for 3 days after the shows I play. I was wondering what the steps are to learn how to recover my voice and not damage it any further to the point of needing surgery.

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  2 года назад +6

      Addison, I am sorry to hear about your vocal troubles. The first step is to have your voice properly evaluated, to have them checked, just in case. Once you know what you are dealing with, then you can take appropriate steps. In the meantime, while you are waiting for the assessment, lots of hydration (drinking fluids and steaming) and some SOVT exercises (gentle voicing).

    Great tips and very useful for me at the moment. I've been practicing 1-3 times per day and intentionally picking songs that are outside of my range in order to keep pushing the boundaries that little bit further. Needless to say, I've reached a point where songs that I normally sing fine are even starting to sound terrible and I've come to realize that I'm just expecting too much from my poor little vocal chords.
    I love the idea of rest and being the most chatty person, it will be funny to tell my housemates that I'm going to be taking 3 days of silence to give them a proper break. It will be the first time in my life; though I will be singing Sound of Silence by Disturbed in my head...lol.

      You probably feel a choking feeling or you feel the ball in your throat rise up too high to where your notes sound strained, right?
      Well thats because your larynx (adams apple) is raised to high. You need to lower it.
      Im not entirely sure how to do this but i do know that relieving yourself of tongue, jaw and neck tension do improve your tone and prevent a strained sound.

    Hi Katarina,
    Your videos are very helpful, thanks!
    I think that I strained my vocal cords from lecturing, rather than from singing. I haven't sung in a while, but now my throat hurts every time I talk. I have been resting it from lectures and trying to talk less for the past two days. What type of doctor should I contact about it? Also, how long does it usually take to relieve vocal strain? I don't have any hoarseness, just a very sore throat. It even hurts when not talking :(. I need to resume lecturing soon though.
    Hollie

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  4 года назад +1

      Hi Hollie, I am sorry to hear that you strained your voice. It is very possible to strain voice from overuse like in your situation, for example when you have to speak to a large audience or present in big spaces or in a noisy environment. I even see more voice problems now when people talk more over Zoom. I would recommend that you see an ENT doctor, most ideally an ENT who works in a voice centre (therefore has a specific expertise in voice problems). I am not sure how long it will take for you to relieve vocal strain because it is very individual and it depends on the cause. For now, I would recommend resting your voice as much as you can, drinking enough fluids, steam your voice if possible, avoid vocal behaviours that may worsen it, such as throat clearing or coughing. You will find many more tips on how to care for your voice on this channel, so feel free to watch them. I wish you all the best.

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  3 года назад +1

      Hi Nafiu, absolute rest (so no talking at all) is not recommended, only for cases of vocal hemorrhage and after vocal surgeries (not sure if that is your case). Absolutely no voice use may lead to muscle atrophy so therefore, relative vocal rest is recommended for most vocal issues. I am not sure what is the cause of your chronic vocal issue but i would recommend relative rest and some vocal exercises to rehabilitate your voice.
