  • The story behind Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is one that has been discussed frequently since 2001. Long story short, this era of Wilco saw significant adversity. Line-up changes/internal conflict, substance abuse and most notably, the lack of support from their label, Reprise. Changes were demanded. Jeff Tweedy refused to make them. The band was ultimately dropped soon after. Thus, the controversial story behind Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was born. But issues aside, this was the band's breakthrough album. The first to really put them on the map and reach a wide audience.
Despite its complicated backstory, this album is often considered one of the best Indie rock albums of the 2000s. So how well does Yankee Hotel Foxtrot hold up? Watch to find out!
Today, we’re gonna discuss Wilco’s troubled, yet incredibly impactful breakthrough album.

I still remember Consequence of Sound did a Masterpiece Review of this album, only to be taken down. I still remember how they emphasized the conflict with their label.

Fascinating how everyone associates Wilco with Chicago, when they were founded in southern Illinois and most of their early performances were almost all in Saint Louis. An analogy could be made between Tom Petty/Mudcrutch in Gainesville, FL and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in Los Angeles. Just as Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers wouldn’t be the musician/band they became without their Gainesville roots, very much can be said about Wilco and their southern Illinois/Saint Louis roots.

St Louis is not really southern Illinois. More central. As a Saluki, I wonder if they ever played carbondale

Great video. While I'm not a Wilco fan, I really like how you described the album and the songs on it.

Great video about a great band. I noticed that the elliott smith oscars performance you uploaded got taken down. Do you know anywhere else I can find a recording of it in high quality? Thanks

It’s not accurate to say Jay Bennett joined after A.M. He was with Wilco from the beginning.

@@davidbrociner8187 according to Jeff's memoir Jay was not in A.M. He joined for the tour of it. Being There was the first record Jay was on

@@ohiotattoo1 I saw Wilco multiple times in late ‘94 (Maxwell’s & Mercury Lounge on back to back nights) and Jay Bennett was in the band both nights. This was months before the release of AM.
