  • People cower away from higher mileage M cars, and they shouldn't. The 2011 to 2016 f10 M5 with the S63B44TU is impressive and very durable. It's also found in the M6, X6M and X5M

    Hey man, I'm a BMW tech at Global Imports BMW in Atlanta GA and today I worked on a 2010 Dinan F10 M5 with 231,354 miles on it and I thought about your video so I went and look at the vehicle history and the biggest repair he had was a High Pressure Fuel Pump that went bad at 190k miles and fuel level sensor around 222k miles. Beside that just all maintenance in the history.....👍🏿

    Just clocked 65000km last week. Fully stock except with K&N Air Filters, RPI Air Scoops and Akrapovic Exos. The only time it got towed away/ failed me was around 3 months ago, did a full throttle out of the toll and the car started jerking before smoking all around. Towed it back to the dealer and found out faulty injectors .

    Adding my two cents to an old thread. Own 2013 BMW F10 M5 owned since 60,000 miles. I have just rolled over 85,000 miles. I maintain this car myself, but also carry a complete bumper to bumper 100,000 mile warranty on it. I have yet to use this warranty. I change the oil early at about 3,500-4,000 miles. I change the air filters, dif oil, and top off any fluid that is needed at this point. I have cat-less downpipes and a stage one MHD (warranty approved with this).
    Problems I have encountered: Coolant hose leaks here and there. I repair these as needed and have tried to replace any that are easily accessible as I find ones leaking. - Battery drain issue which was due to comfort access handle malfunction. - Adaptive headlight motor went bad and replaced. - Remote control for rear entertainment system quit syncing. Now I just load some videos on a flash drive if the car is taking passengers on a lengthy trip so I have not fixed that or intend to. I have put a new set of Michelin Pilot Sports on it due to normal wear.
    Oil analysis came back from my oil change at 84,000 miles. Report says my engine is above average for engines of this mileage and they dont suspect any issues that are current and my air and oil filtration are doing excellent job to help this along. Things go bad and they are sometimes expensive but owning this car and being able to drive it how I like to drive it are worth it. This vehicle can be a labor of love or a nightmare if you shrug off little things that go wrong with it. They will pile up quick and make your pocket book hurt if not handled. Hope this helps. Good video!

    First off, I'm a BMW guy (own an F10 530d) and have been researching upgrading to an F10 M5, so know that I'm not some random hater. That being said, I have to comment, as you're deeply misleading your audience. You praise the M5's engine the entire video, but use no meaningful data to reinforce anything your praise. From the research I've done trolling through the forums, the S63 engine is FAR from reliable. There are multiple ways it decides to grenade itself- typically through faulty fuel injectors that seize the engine, or through the VERY well documented rod bearing failure. Both of these often require an entirely new engine in most cases. This has happened to people who have driven the piss out of their cars and who have babied their cars. If one of these hasn't been maintained impeccably, then run the other way. If you find one that has been maintained (at about twice that of what BMW says), then at least there's a change the engine will be alright for a while, but you're still rolling the dice. I want this car so badly, but I'm not sure I can get past the chronic reliability issues of this car.

  • @gmakutube
    @gmakutube 7 лет назад +5

    I've found that the engineering is good enough (tolerances etc) that BMWs will last a long time - I think the key is avoiding the first 2 - 3 years of the new models (like for any car) so that all of those new car issues get identified and fixed. There are quite a number of BMW forums on the net and it is straight forward to find out what the typical issues have turned out to be.
    I prefer BMWs with a bit of miles (and time) on them, if I know the maintenance history - for peace of mind. Garage queens and "Lady-driven" cars can be death. The former just doesn't get up to temperature long enough. One can get fuel in the oil, and ethanol is death for engines over the long term (I only use Shell or Esso 91 octane which don't have ethanol). The latter never do the proper maintenance and oil changes are few and far between.
    I have a 1998 528i with 116K miles (American car) which is about 185K km; a 2000 540i with about 145K km; a 2006 530xi with about 157K km; and a 2006 M5 with about 106K km.

    I've been studying some cars. The Gt350R seems to have a problem with oil burning etc. These M engines seem to have some problems also with some of them. Could it be that some new buyers are not following the break in procedure properly and piston rings etc are not seated properly? I am thinking of a X6M or X5M. I have an E90 M3 and replaced the bearing. Keeping it, too much fun with cutouts. Also considering the E63 AMG wagon. But, it too has some issues, rod connectors weak?

    Every BMW I've owned was bought from a dealer, usually two years old with roughly 25K to 40K kilometers, and still covered by factory warranty. Now, I'm asking the dealer to find me a two year old, low millage M5 within the dealer network. One thing that concerns me is the oil burning reputations these cars have due to the engine heat drying up the valve stem seals. The turbos and the cats are on top of the engine and the heat is the culprit. I wonder if BMW engineers are addressing this issue? Do you have any input on this matter?

    My uncle bought the BMW F10 520D M-Sports at 20,000 miles and now it has 178,000 miles and trust me it's still running sooo smooth and comfortable and you're not gonna believe this apart from regular services and tyre changes it hasn't had any issue with it..... I'd say most important this is to ensure that the used car has full service history but if it has dealer approved service history record then you're in the good ...... I personally want to buy a M5 and wanna start a RUclips channel on how I'll maintain and how I'll mod it ....from UK btw

    1. How is it on MPG when you are not beating on it and have the tune set to 700hp?

      1. I can set the car to 560hp or 693hp, either way MPG is the same when not beating on it

      Have owned this engine in a '15 M5. I purchased it last year when it had just a spec over the 50k miles (BMW extended would no longer be an option). As such, GREAT deal on price, for so much car. Best idea ever, and I'm usually not a risk taker. Warranty businesses are out to make money and not save you. The big bonus with this engine/car is that this video is spot on. Its' a rock solid car , very few people are reporting any issues.

  • @wattsenough
    @wattsenough 6 лет назад +3

    The M5 is a great ride. The car feels heavy but will launch you in the next time zone in a flash. The interior noise is loud. You will hear every road defect. The main issue is dealer service pricing. The last dealer visit the service guy was telling an owner that they can charge multiple credit cards. If you don't have deep pockets, keep away from any BMW. That is why there are so many 3rd party service organizations that can do the service far cheaper. Many dealers will also push out what can be serviced as meeting BMW specs so that repairs when they are really needed are done out of warranty. That is one of their tricks to reducing overhead, especially when they sell so many of the lower priced models.

    Did you upgrade the dct clutch? I've been doing some research. Some people claim that the DCT will only hold up to around 625-650 trq. What's your take on this?

    • @EntrepreneursInCars
      @EntrepreneursInCars  7 лет назад

      the Dinan tune only has 650trq. Either way it has a CPO warranty so I'm not bothered

      Digging the videos. Just doing my homework on these F10 M5's. I currently own a second generation CTS-V. I love it but want to own a twin turbo car for a chance. I never realized these cars were this fast and easy to modify with a simple tune and exhaust and bam your at 700 hp.

      Search the forums but youll most likely feel if anythings off like clutch slippin or how warn are rotors(not that cheap to replace). Tires will affect price too a set of rears can be well over 1k cad (can find deals tho and itd prob run u about 700 but hopefully it helps drop a price). Solid cars but like he said ppi will help u discover a lot of which u cant see or feel from a test drive.

      '02 540i here with 190,000 miles. Been expensive but super reliable. Timing chain guides, VANOS, and the usual cooling components was the only out of the box maintenance. If you stay on top of it, they're fantastic. If you can't afford to apprehend these problems and don't like to be involved with a vehicle in all aspects, BMW is the wrong brand lol.

      I've only put 50,000 km on it. Only things that "needed" to be done was the usual BMW coolant upkeep, brakes, oil changes, and a crank position sensor. It's a M52 in a 328is (daily driver).

    also m cars are built with parts that are made to take punishment, and lets be honest most people will not take them to the tracks. Even if people like pushing it on the highway it can take that easy. Also dont get the a M car if you dont have to money to maintain or put repairs as needed.

      Just bad design, and sometimes BMW advises the wrong oil for their engines. You can't prevent it, other than putting stronger bearings in.

    S63 engines especially the 2009-2011's had major issues. They ALL will have leaky valve stem seals by 110K miles, they get HEAVY carbon build up, which requires pulling the engine to do walnut blasting. Look up the BMW Customer Care package.

    • @7477238
      @7477238 7 лет назад

      Yeah the S63 and N63 are great motors WHEN they work but they're a mess of a motor. Heavy oil consumption (which is one part of the nasty carbon buildup issue), excess heat building up in the V of the motor because of the turbos being shoved in there along with reverse flow manifolds and plastic everything with regards to hoses and cooling parts. All that stuff goes brittle over time and it's hell to diagnose and fix. Some people install 90C thermostats in them to prevent heat related issues but still that's not enough.

    • @jcimicata
      @jcimicata 7 лет назад

      I had an X6M a month ago that had 7 different coolant leaks. Water pump, thermostat, turbo inlet/outlet pipes, radiator. 7 Fucking coolant leaks.

    • @7477238
      @7477238 7 лет назад

      LexLuger I wanted to upgrade my MB C300 to a BMW 550i but good thing I did a fair bit of reading because I may have avoided a nightmare. That motor just pulls so smooth and the car is very satisfying to drive but there needs to be an element of reliability. Heck, the MB M278 V8 doesn't have any major issues at all so why BMW can't figure it out is beyond me. Did coolant leak onto the exhaust causing a smell BTW?

    • @jcimicata
      @jcimicata 7 лет назад

      It didn't on the X6M, but I have a 2011 550Xi at my shop right now that is leaking so much coolant into the turbo valley its dripping down the back and burning off.
