  • BMW E60 M5 vs F10 Reliability Issues - Consumer Review
In today's video, we're going to talk about the BMW E60 M5 vs. the BMW F10 M5 and we're going to talk about specific reliability issues. These are consistent problems and issues owners are finding with these cars. The BMW F10 M5 reliability issues are sometimes similar to the BMW E60 M5 reliability issues, but that all depends.
First up, I do a comparison of oil consumption on the F10 M5 to the E60 M5. Both of these cars can be known to consume a lot of oil. Upwards of a quart per 1000 miles. The BMW E60 M5 oil consumption can be just as bad, and most of this is related to how the car was broken in.
The BMW F10 M5 has an overheating issue related to the electric water pump. They can fail and then drive your F10 into a number of overheating issues. The BMW E60 M5 doesn't seem to have this issue as often.
The BMW F10 M5 has a DTM failure, or a drivetrain failure issue. Often times this is as a result of hard driving and inadequate fuel injector support for the horsepower requirements. Again, the E60 doesn't have this DTM failure code, though it does have idle and throttle actuator error codes.
The F10 DCT Transmission vs the E60 SMG III transmission can be quite the debate. The BMW DCT vs SMG can be often broken down by calling the DCT agressive while the SMG can be known as sluggish (unless you use better settings). Either way, there are a few issues where owners feel that the DCT can be too aggressive in the higher settings.
Both the BMW E60 M5 and the BMW F10 M5 have a mechanical issue related to rattling. Sometimes these come from the VANOS. If oil starts to leak as well, this can produce rattling in these cars' engines.
There's also an issue where the F10 M5 rattles. These issues have been attributed to hard driving that's worn out some of the softer, stickier tires just a little bit. This issue can still occur after a number of realignments and other work.
All in all, the two cars compare pretty similarly. The F10 M5 reliability and the E60 M5 reliability are often the same because the two cars are very similar.

As backwards. BMWs use tighter tolerances, and people do not change their oil every 5000 miles, use cheap oil, and.or do not warm up their car before redlining. THAT is why they have issues. Maintain the car, take care of it, NEVER race it when cold, and it will last 300k miles easy. Problem is, BMWs are so fun to drive, it takes tremendous willpower to not redline it when cold. Also, the E60 is not even close to the F10 in reliability, Not even the same category.

Great video but I know a lot of oil consumption (specifically the M54 6 cyl engine) is caused by the crank case ventilation system. I’ve heard this has been an issue in some non BMW V8s. This could contribute the the V10 and V8 in these M5s

It doesn’t mean that if you buy one, you will have them immediately. If you are a true car enthusiast, you will maintain it properly. That my thoughts on the topic. Most of these issues are overblown. Majority of the owners I know have not changed their SMG pumps, throttle/idle actuators, vanos solenoids, etc. The one demon that I wouldn't risk is the rod bearings. Rod bearings affects not only the s85/s65 but the s54 as well. But yeah, stuff breaks...

Wow, this is full of bad information. Oil consumption is mostly due to heat in the "Hot vee" configuration for the s63tu/s63. If you have an older model (sub 2012) you have the really bad engine which is the s63. The TU variant fixes A LOT of issues with the engine. The "drivetrain malfunction" error is simply limp mode, which can get triggered by anything so that you don't fuck up your engine. Even bad air reading or a bad coil pack. The E60 m5 doesn't hold a candle to the f10 with the s63tu.

Sounds like the F10 is just as lame as the E60. Drive hard... powertrain failure

the problem with this guy is that he's in love with his car and that's why he's going to defend it no matter what but for that reason is that he doesn't allow himself to do an honest review about BMW M5, so if he is a reviewer he should put his love for his car on the side and accept that he drives a piece of 💩 and that it, just saying and for that also I stopped following him

When you say an issue affect "a lot" of cars out there, at least do your research. A dozen cars, out of thousands of F10 M5's isn't "a lot" when you put it into perspective. This happens to cars that weren't broken in correctly, and weren't maintained correctly.
