As a boy and boy scout I hiked the route from Passage to Rinn an Scidi one Sunday in 1967 with my pals via Rafeen and Shanbally and back to Passage. Quite the hike for an eleven year old but what a day out, what Pals. Back then Ringaskiddy was a dead end. No ferry terminus, famous only for its tiny chapel and no bridge even to Haulbowline Island where my uncle was a boiler maker/welder and had to get the boat to work there and if I remember correctly, just Gobby beach at the end. Now look at the place if not a boomtown at least a very respectable location in the midst of a booming chemico pharmaceutical region with a deep water pier, welcoming cruise liners to the south Munster region and ferries to France and maybe northern Spain. What a remarkable progression in a half century and what a lovely part of the world still.
