I think is really sad, how desperate she must have been to sand her face, and endure so much pain just hoping to get rid of her acne. It breaks my heart to think how she felt about herself to go to that extreme.
Exactly what I was thinking. She must have really hated her skin to sand her face and harm herself.
This! :•{
I can relate because I did similar (never sandpaper, but harsh physical exfoliants and isopropyl alcohol, baking soda, etc) and it was a form of self harm.
I knew it wouldn’t make my acne better and that it would hurt me, but I felt so disgusted by the sight of my face that even bleeding wounds and scars seemed like an improvement over the pimples. I was hopeless and frustrated. And truthfully, I felt like I deserved the pain for failing to look beautiful. Society’s message to women seemed to be, “your only worth is being pretty, once your youth and beauty are gone you’re disposable,” so that internalized misogyny created a horrible inner turmoil.
That’s why I’m so grateful for people like Hyram who educate the public on skincare AND self care. Everyone deserves to feel beautiful and achieve clear skin, it really can be life changing. (For that reason I’m super passionate about affordable skincare too, because it’s ridiculous to look at it as a luxury instead of a basic need and a part of personal hygiene!!) But everyone also deserves to know that their worth is so much deeper and so far beyond their physical appearance.
If anyone reading this has felt this way or feels this way, I see you, I empathize with you, I support you, I love you, and I wish you the best. ❤️

My problem with skin picking, is it doesnt matter if I'm looking in the mirror or not. I will sit on my bed and feel my face and scratch whatever off, or my shoulders or arms. I've tried so hard to stop and I just cant. My time picking has reduced, but once I start I cant stop until someone stops me.
I can relate
Same 😭 and then I have scabs and then I pick those and then they bleed it sucks 😭
Same. I’m picking right now in bed.
@@lyssa744 yeah me too, like if I feel something on my face I will not stop picking at it!!!
This is self harm. What are you feeling/ thinking/ avoiding at the times when you do this? Get to the root. The picking is a symptom, not the problem.
If you struggle with dermatilomania or skin picking PLEASE try getting acrylic/gel nails with nail extensions or press on nails!! Having thicker tipped nails makes it pretty much impossible to pick your skin. I used to pick my skin constantly, in the mirror, while was studying, unconiously, and even in my sleep. I used to pick the dry skin off the bottom of my feet until I couldn't walk. Now when I'm stressed I paint myself a fresh set of nails and it has helped immensely!!
THIS!!! This really works, I’m 40 and I’ve had dermatilomania since I was about 7. I could have written the above comment myself as I’ve also had periods where I could barely walk. Thick gel nails and great skincare (less to pick) has saved my life.
YES ! It worked for me for sometimes, but then I had eczema so I needed to have my nails super short. But I would definitely recommend !
I have done all of that but I still pick, nothing seems to work for me😢
I have acrylics, personally it didn’t work for me. Maybe it caused even more irritation lol. But not looking in the mirror made me stop
Yessss I have only had acrylics once but I noticed how much I didn’t pick at my skin

It's so frustrating watching this now, finding out that basically every product that was marketed towards teens when I was growing up was formulated from the worst possible ingredients. I spent so much money to make my skin even worse 😭😭😭
We had to take my niece to urgent care a few years ago because she decided to “deep clean” her face with a magic eraser!!! Poor kid rubbed the whole top layer of her skin off. She was left with wet, weeping burn like sores all over her face!!
Ouch
WHAT THE HELL OMG!! i feel so bad for her, bless her soul 😫
I rubbed one on the top of my hand, for no specific reason. It wasn’t enough to leave a mark, but it still felt like I rubbed with microscopic shards of glass or something. It was so weird and off-putting. At least now I deeply understand that magic erasers are essentially fine sanders.
I once used one to rub off some hair dye I got on my neck. Never again.
As a mother to a teen daughter, I've been teaching her the proper way to treat her pimples. No St Ives in this house!!!

*me who also picks at my skin excessively watching hyram say it’s a mental illness* um anyways so-
Lol me too, funny not funny
The skin-picking itself is not a mental illness, though in excess it is indicative of a couple of mental illnesses such as dermatillomania and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Haha yeah, that's a common symptom of various disorders. A few examples that this symptom CAN occur are anxiety, ADHD, Autism, probably schizophrenia, the list goes on.
samee we love dermatillomania
Fr i thought it was normal-
12:35 I have ADHD so when I start to pick it's really hard to stop even though I want to. I have many scars on my back and chest and will probably get many more :/

I know it probably sounds pretty ridiculous and borderline sad, but ever since I started doing my bathroom routine in the dark I almost completely stopped picking my skin. So I recommend not switching on your actual bathroom lights and just leaving the door open so the light from the adjacent room gives you just enough brightness to see what you're doing/ grabbing. Worked a treat for me!
this is honestly such good advice! thank you!!!
I do this too! Great advice, it truly helps!
YES! Or if you want light, you have to cover up the mirrors! Especially after taking a shower when all your pores look clean and ready to pick.... have the mirrors covered beforehand!
Sometimes a person has to do little tricks on themself to be healthier. Whatever works!
Dude, what an idea. Gotta try this
As someone else with dermatillomania, it's so encouraging to see more people talk about it openly these days. I've been struggling with it since I was 13. Nailing down my skincare routine has definitely helped but there are some environmental factors that are just out of my control and I've come to terms with that. If you're reading this and you also struggle with skin picking, please know that you're not alone and there is support out there for you!
I’ve never really thought about it, but there is a chance I could have dermatillomania.
I’m so glad that dermatillomania was mentioned. I struggle with that as well as Trichotillomania (Compulsion to pull hair). It’s difficult. I have anxiety. And it leads to the compulsions.
"Brand new sandpaper. I'm not crazy."
Mmmmmm _are you sure about that?_
I think it was sarcasm mocking her former attitude towards skin care.
Yea it’s a joke
@Nothing To See Here first one 🙌☝️🙆♂️
"I'm trembling bish" he is so funny
I'm someone who picks my skin quite a lot. But not because I see blemishes, but because I feel them. I'm used to touching my face or my arms or neck, and if I come across any part that feels odd or a 'blemish' I will keep picking it until it's no longer "rough". Probably not a good habit.
Hyram your videos have really changed my life. 🥺 I have struggled with acne since I was 11-12 years old and finally at 21, with your recommendations, has my skin started to break out less, it’s properly moisturized, and my acne scars are slowly fading. I tried so many of these horrible “diy skincare tricks” growing up and it only made things worse, so I’m very happy that young people have you to look up to!

Growing up my mom believed to was your face all you need was St Ives followed up by a bar of Irish Spring Soap and a washcloth 😫 I honestly don’t done how I don’t have permanent skin damage from my teenage years.
Tip for my fellow skin pickers: do your skincare almost completely in the dark. The light needs to be dim enough that you can't really see the details of your face in the mirror, but you can at least see the products you're using/what you're doing. Hyram's tip of not looking at yourself in the mirror is very helpful, but if you need to take it an extra step further try dimming the light and see how it goes.
Dont trust myself enough to not drip glycolic acid inti my eyeballs while doing skincare in the dark
I also used Elmer’s glue and activated charcoal as a diy pore strip.

I have to say, after hearing about the sandpaper thing and realizing the woman who did it has beautiful glowing skin, that kinda gives me hope

Not going to lie, but if Hyram came out with a service platform where he provided skincare consultations with product recommendations I would pay for that in a heartbeat. It's hard to find a youtuber/specialist that is as honest as he is when it comes to providing information on different skin products as well as being genuinely authentic.
He ain't a dermatologist :) it's illegal to provide a service without a license, he could get his ass sued, plus there's so much anyone can do without fiscally seeing your face (even tho ppl without license doing it exist)
He’s just giving advice based on his experience in skincare and what he likes, he’s not a dermatologist and can’t recommend something that will work for everyone because peoples skin is different and he can’t actually see his viewers skin. WHY SANDPAPER 😭😭
I had really bad acne in high school and my parents were convinced that lemon would help, so I rubbed a lemon on my skin EVERYDAY for more than a year, sometimes even two times a day, i put it around my EYE AREA and i never even put on moisturiser bc I didn’t like the way it felt😭 I burned my entire face🙃 I did the same with apple cider vinegar. And since I was destroying my face everyday and it looked awful I refused to go to school without makeup.. I didn’t buy makeup removers bc I thought it was gonna break me out even more lmaooo so instead I scrubbed my face with sugar to get it off EVERY DAY. yes I do somehow still have skin left
a few years later my dad (who knows nothing about skincare) told me that if I put a mixture of lemon, cinnamon, nutmeg and honey on my face it would make my scars fade, and guess what? It didn’t :))) but you can imagine how much worse my skin got and how DRY I was
Ohh god. This made cringe so hard😂

The coconut oil is really good for scarring!!
@@alexandrew647 there’s nothing really in bioOil that will actually fade your scars (except for s little bit of vitamin e: hyram doesn’t like bioOil
Perfect example of people thinking natural is better haha
So when I was 11 or 12, I mixed cinnamon, lemon, and sugar and used it to scrub my face everyday in hopes of clearing my skin up before 6th grade started. I used dishwashing soap to wash my face, then I used my mom's cream which was EXPIRED but I didn't care. I kept going and used my nails to scratch the pimples off, thinking that if the scabs were gone then it will go away.
I used coconut oil mixed with carrot (which molded often but I didn't care either), and I still used it to "protect my skin". And I would boil mushrooms and straight up put it on my face.
My skin broke out HORRIBLY on the day I woke up before the first day of 6th grade, and I had a panic attack. It ruined my self esteem and skin for YEARS. I also got bullied constantly because of it.
But my skin is doing much better now, and my routine is a lot better too.
I have dermatillomania as well, I’m so glad to see someone talking about it online bc I’ve done it since I was so young I thought I was just insane and didn’t understand why other people looked fine and I was like…a walking skin sack of scabs. I’m working on it, it’s definitely improving - but it’s so hard.
Also like…I feel like I could add to this with a lot of things 😂
I once had a huge pimple on my neck, and I was like I am NOT picking at this so I soaked a cotton ball in tee tree oil and taped it to my neck overnight. Got a MASSIVE burn on my neck from it and the scar is still there but fading…because obviously I picked at it as well 🤪
Also used to use that apricot scrub multiple times per day and yeah basically believed my skin getting worse was it purging all the gross shit from me 😂
I use isopropyl alcohol to clean my jewelry, I could not imagine putting that on my face.

tbh i pick my skin but it heals because I use pimple patches. i don't have any scaring either
I also have OCD but I tell myself that if I pick my skin then something bad will happen to me and I stop doing it (a bit ironic I guess)
Yep, when I was young and started going through puberty family members told me to use rubbing alcohol to clean my oily skin, Not knowing any better and feeling self conscious I started cleaning my face daily multiple times a day, my face started reacting and become increasingly oily so it became a horrible cycle, I didn’t wear sunscreen or moisturizer., I’m still dealing with the scars and skin damage, I’m seeing changes and am doing research to find ways to help heal. Thank you for making videos so other people don’t make these same mistakes.
with most of these people, you can tell how much they are suffering by how far they are willing to go in order to get rid of acne. younger me probably would have sanded my face too; it's that feeling of hopelessness. deep down you know it won't work, but you hate yourself so much that you are fine with harming yourself. it's horrific :(
Aw the public awareness for dermatillomania 🥺 my contribution to the comments section will be to raise public awareness for trichotillomania as well (hair pulling disorder I among many manage)❤️❤️❤️
My heart goes out to you because I've been dealing with trich my whole life, too. That impulse to keep picking and/or pulling, even when it hurts, is something I wouldn't wish on anyone. I'm glad she shared her struggles; it honestly helps so many people just to know they're not alone. I hope you're doing well!
not me reading this while playing with my hair
😊
Eyyy I have trich and dermatillomania so love that for me
As a social worker, I see this pretty regular in my work. Yet, I never really got it in class expect for like 3 minutes maybe. It’s just so weird to me how little I knew about skin and hair picking in class. When I started as an intern, I didn’t even know what it really was. I needed to go to the bathroom and just sat there googling Wtf I needed to do with my client. We def need more representation!
Nobody:
me:* focusing his earring every time he talks*
I did too after he commented on it, adjusted and it immediately slide down again.
this video made me realize that i will never have perfectly clear skin and there will always be little bits of acne bc i got the genes from my dad 🥲👍
its so cool to hear such a big creator discuss dermatillomania :)
Hyram: "I'm surprised I'm still standing"
Also Hyram: is sitting
Nah he's kneeling down
Im getting prepared to physically cringe.
First!,,,,,,,,,,X,,,,,,,d,,,,,,,,,Me too😧
Let’s not skip the ads Hyram will need that therapy money after this 😂
you find him cringe?
@@estelle9636 no they find the horror stories cringe lol
I use to use St Ives everyday and pore strips once a week when I was a teen. Now my pores on my nose are noticeable and some on my cheeks. Now that skin care is getting more popular and I discovered Hyram, my skin care has changed a lot which I’m happy about. Thank you Hyram.
Oh my gosh these were absolutely horrifying. I feel bad that we become so desperate that we'll try anything to get perfect skin. Thanks society!!! Great video Hyram hopefully this will help other people from trying crazy stuff to their skin.
I don't have tik tok but here's my story- I had a deep cystic acne bump and was in so much pain, I decided to pop it even though everything I read told me not to. Nothing was popping it, so I literally had to stick a NAIL into it. Yes a metal nail. I sanitized it (ya know, safety first) then slowly pushed it into the bump...it did work but I don't recommend doing it lol. Hope you enjoyed reading this :---)
I've done that as well you are not alone girly.
You are gorgeous BTW ❤😍
I did the same thing with a safety pin a couple of different times lol
The worst thing I did to my skin was not listen to dermatologists when they told me I had to wear sunscreen when I was on Accutane. I think my acne scars would be MUCH better if I did lol
everyday after i wash my face and pick my towel i hear hyram's sweet voice in my head saying "not too rough, not too rough" ❤️
when i had acne i would cry and never go out but i love hyram because he felt bad for the people and he didnt make fun of them!
Whoever reads this hope u have an amazing glow up and clear skin
I CLAIM
Thank you and same to you!💞
Ty you too
Thank you
Thank you. Hope you get clear and glowing skin too!
If you struggle with picking your skin when looking in the mirror, COVER YOUR MIRROR! It has been a boon for my houseate's mental health (she struggles with body dysmorphia related to her skin as well as hyperpigmentation and cystic acne). Even my ADHD-related picking has PLUMETTED since we covered the mirror!
The first zit I got in 8th grade was on my chin and I washed my face, used clean and clear benzoyl peroxide, and when it dried out...I used a pumice stone to "exfoliate it" left a huge red scar for about two years
I think is the first time I’ve ever seen a skincare content creator talk about dermatillomania-I’ve NEVER seen someone who makes content like this talk about my mental illness. There’s so much shaming content around skin picking and OCD in general and seeing this made me feel so…accepted??? Like THANK YOU for talking about this and if you have recs for patches that can go over picked skin that don’t have things like salicylic acid or tea tree that can irritate wounds i would love them.
