Has anyone seen Anne with an E? After the cancellation and abrupt ending of the TV series I am left wanting to see Anne's story continue.. although the books deviate from the TV show plotline should I begin reading at book 2, or perhaphs book 3, so that I do not have to start at the very beginning just to continue? Any advice will be appreciated, thank you all ❤
    P.S,
You are extremley well spoken Meghan and I can feel your passion for this series!! Thank you!

Thanks so much, Katherine! I'd recommend starting at the beginning with book 1 since it is so different from the TV show that it might be confusing to jump right into book 2. That being said, I'm sure you could still understand most of what is going on.

I don't know that I can rank the Anne books in my mind. I tend to think of the series as one big long story. When I think of the Anne stories and my memories of reading and rereading them over the years, it's one whole story, and I find it hard to separate favorites or least favorites.

So far I have only read the first 4 and at the moment I like them in this order ... Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Windy Poplars, Anne of Avonlea and Anne of the Island last. I was really pleasantly surprised by Anne of Windy Poplars because I had heard that it wasn't a favourite of many Anne fans. I kind of liked that it read like a book of short stories rather than a novel. I loved her letters to Gilbert and it actually made me cry when Katherine with a K spends Christmas with Anne at Green Gables. It just reignited all the Anne feelings that I've had from growing up with the movies.
I personally felt Anne of the Island was missing that. I didn't really like the new characters... in fact at the moment I can't really even recall everything that happens in that book... other than Anne gets proposed to a whole lot of times. The one part I did love, of course, is the ending, which is one of my favourite scenes from the movies too.
Really looking forward to reading more in the series, especially since so many fans love the books with the Blythe children.

That’s awesome that you and your family are so into Anne and the adaptations! The first three books of the series are Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea and Anne of the Island. Chronicles of Avonlea is a short story collection that was published between books 2 and 3, and is not technically part of the Anne of Green Gables series. While it features Anne and some other Avonlea characters, it kind of stands alone. When you read the stories though, it seems to take place between books 2 and 3. It is also followed up by Further Chronicles of Avonlea which was published several years later. Road to Avonlea is a wonderful TV series created by Kevin Sullivan (as you know of course) which draws from these two short story collections. More than that though, the TV show draws from a different LM Montgomery duology, The Story Girl and its sequel, The Golden Road. These books take place in a different town than Avonlea and do not involve any of the Anne of Green Gables characters. These are the books that Sara, Felix, Felicity, and the rest of the King family come from. Kevin Sullivan brilliantly transplants them to Avonlea, incorporates their stories with the Chronicles stories, and adds plenty of his own creativity. I hope that makes sense, and that you have an amazing time in PEI!

This is very close to how I would rank the series, I think. Rilla is definitely my favorite of the series. I love and adore it. Part of that is, like you said, that it has such a wide range of emotions presented because it was during war time. I also think it's very true to life for that reason - she was likely writing this book while the war was happening, so it's a real look at what many people would have been experiencing during the time. Rilla is also a fantastic character.

      @meghanthestorygirl4581  4 года назад +3

I am scared now to read Anne of Windy Poplars when some people have a hard time finishing it. Since I already buy it, then I just have to read it then. Plus, I planned to only read until Book 6. I want your opinion if you don't mind. Should I read all 8 books to understand the story without cliffhanger? Or reading until book 6 is just enough to conclude Anne's story? Most people automatically read them in chronological order of Anne's life (that's how they're presented in the box sets), but I think the series is actually better in publication order. Since that's the way Montgomery originally planned them to be read, I feel that the momentum and flow is much stronger that way. So the order would be 12357846 😊

hi i’m not sure if you will read this as this came out quite a while ago but i need the opinion of someone who’s read the series and i can’t find the answer online! i’m only just getting into anne of green gables (mainly because i’m absolutely in love with the show anne with an e and i had to read the books) so i’ve ordered the box set of what i thought was the whole series but it’s got the first three, the 5th (house of dreams) and that 7th (rainbow valley) and 8th (rilla of ingleside). I’m unsure why they missed out on the 4th and 6th books (windy willows and anne of ingleside), but i was considering purchasing them both separately.

Haha, I'm glad my video could help somewhat! That is very odd that they would sell them without books 4 and 6. I think it's totally fine to read what you've got without books 4 and 6 as that is how the original audience would have read them. Especially with book 4, there is a nice momentum that it kind of interrupts between books 3 and 5. Book 6 might be more important to read though as it introduces Anne's children and is helpful for approaching books 7 and 8. That being said, I don't think you NEED to read it first though. 😊

Does Anne become more likeable and relatable as she matures into an adult? I'm in my 20s and I'm reading Anne for the first time. I have grown up watching a few episodes of Road to Avonlea. I recognize all of the Kevin Sullivan miniseries/films of Anne, however I didn't watch them much. I've always loved the world of Avonlea, but I didn't really know Anne's story until recent years with the new "Anne with an E" show. I hope this makes sense.

Oh, interesting! Anne With an E is quite different from AGG, but I love a lot of aspects of it. In the books, Anne is very precocious, thoughtful, talkative and imaginative as a child. She's well meaning but gets into a lot of scrapes, and holds onto her pride long after she has forgiven others. (Exhibit A: Gilbert.) As she grows up, she becomes quieter and less flighty, although her imagination remains strong and a central part of her personality. She definitely grows and matures into a relatable young woman although she essentially stays the same. She says to Marilla near the end of AGG, “I'm not a bit changed--not really. I'm only just pruned down and branched out. The real ME--back here--is just the same.”

Anne of windy Poplars is the only Anne book I haven't read completely or reread . I wish L. M. Montgomery had written Gilbert's replies to Anne, I feel like it would have been much more interesting then.

I agree! Gilbert's replies would have made Anne of Windy Poplars much better. I consider it the weakest of the series but with that change it would have been really good. It would have been nice to see more about what was going on in his life too.

That's awesome that you're using it to help with your English! So glad you're an Anne fan. Are you wondering which one to read first? I would go with Anne of Avonlea since it comes before Anne of the Island in the series order and in when LM Montgomery wrote it ❤

Hi Meghan, I've just found your channel and subscribed. 🥰 I think we're kindred spirits!! I'd love to know about your Rilla of Ingleside stage adaptation. I'm a redhead freelance actress/writer/composer in the UK. I've created and produced my own Anne of Green Gables adaptation - a play with music stage show. I longed to play Anne for many years and I was passionate about creating a faithful adaptation. The trailer is on my RUclips channel.

Ooh, that sounds awesome! We definitely sound like kindred spirits! Creating my own version of Rilla came out of my desire to see a stage adaptation produced, and of course, I wanted to play her as well! I was so grateful to play Anne as well, and I'm really glad you took the bull by the horns by creating your own version and playing her too. I'll check out your channel!
