Anne's dresses in season 3 remind me a lot of Marilla's character development in this show. It still has the sensible and practical style that reflects who Marilla is and also shows her style decision making when she thinks that Anne needs a new dress (just like the brown dress at the very beginning of the series). At the same time though it also exposes Marilla's softer side, a side that has grown to love Anne and a side that notices Anne's love of nature and being outside thus the inclusion of floral embroidery on some of the dresses. The same can be said for the cake that she makes for Anne's birthday. A very simple and practical style of cake but decorated with literal nature that she knows Anne would love.
TLDR: the floral embroidery is lovely
I was thinking the floral embroidery and extra details were Anne’s own additions as she learned to embroider and mend in her teen years. As she gains skills and hobbies she likely would add embellishments that suit her (possibly to cover tears or stains that naturally happen).
I loved Diana’s clothing
Their jackets, cardigans and sweaters look sooo comfy.
I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but I’ve been waiting for you to cover Anne! ☺️ it’s one of my favourite shows, the costumes and scenery was amazing. I’m glad you enjoyed it! I thoroughly enjoyed the video.
Thanks Olivia!
Omg yes I literally finished watching it two days ago. I loved it so much and found the costumes very immersive. Beautifully done and you can tell they did their homework. Omg and the party! I also loved how the costumes played an important part of the story like Anne's first dress with puffy sleeves, her scarf that she knitted, the corsets. Thank you so much for your videos. I've learned tons and I've found my love for costumes again 💕
Thank you so much for your lovely comment Mila!
In Canada, most of us have a plaid jacket or shirt of some sort. It's part of our unofficial national dress. I'm sure if I look through old family photos, someone will be wearing it.
Hi Alison, agreed.
Thanks, I do enjoy looking at shows that do try and portray the actors in HA clothes. And I have found the show on Netflix so I am going to watch it.
That's awesome Debbie. I think you will enjoy it. 😁
Your videos are a calming influence when I’m having a stressful day.
Ah, thanks Hindsight. Hopefully not boring. :)
Costume CO
No, never boring. Always insightful.😉
I noticed that many details of Anne’s dress contrasted with Diana’s show the difference in their families’ wealth- Anne has darker colors that would hide stains better with fewer frills (due to Marilla’s tastes but also the money needed to add extra stuff which Anne seems to get around later by using embroidery and practical checkered trims that likely didn’t cost much or were scrap). Anne also has knitted and wool accessories because they are more durable and affordable while Diana has finer materials.
Hi Candice, it's been a few years but that sounds about right. Thanks for commenting.
*"At Last" by Etta James playing in the background* IT'S BEEN 84 YEARS!!!!!! FINALLY YOU DO THIS VIDEO THAT I HAVE BEEN WAITING SO LONG FOR!!!! 🎊🎊🎊🎊🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😂😂😂😂😂
So any of you know how long I've been trying to get this woman to watch this show and review its costumes? YEARS! Probably. It's been a long ass time, that's for sure and certain. And she had to wait for it to get cancelled to review it. 😭😭😭😭😭😭
OMG, Tat, it took me forever to do this video. SO much research. If you are up for it, we can do a livesteam about it. :)
@@Costume_CO You don't even had to ask.
Okay, lets do it then. I have something to show you later. I will message you.
@@Costume_CO I can't right now, but let me know. Can't wait to see what ya got!
Loved the costumes in AWAE, but was anyone else slightly confused by the choice of colour for Annes dresses? All the other girls had their signature colour from the beginning to the end, but when Anne grew out of her orphan clothes, it seemed like the designers could not decide what her dress colour was supposed to be. Normally I wouldn't mind, but since everyone in the group had their own colour that the designers sticked to, I found it a bit off. So she wore several different colours like brown, greens, a dark blue coat, then she had a chess pattern, and I don't know, I really wish they would have sticked with green as Annes signature colour after she matured, I found the blue dress decision a bit off, since blue was always Dianas colour and green just fit Annes personality overall a bit better. Just imagine her coming down the stairs in a forest dark green dress 🙀
Maybe it was BECAUSE she had only had worn out hand me downs earlier on. When she finally got to pick out clothes for herself, maybe she wanted variety, since she had never had pretty things earlier.
As shown in season 1, her dresses were mostly only made from fabrics Marilla had lying around. They mostly switch from darker and neutral tones because it indicates wealth, especially at that time. You can see some stand in characters also wearing greys and toned down colours because brighter tones were generally more expensive.
The thing about signiture colours seems very silly to me. Why would she need to stick one colour?!
I was left breathless by the blue (which was so more rich and vibrant than Diana’s light blue stuff). I think the wardrobe did exactly what it was supposed to - illustrate Anne’s growth into an incredible, multifaceted young woman. None of her school friends had that spark, and they certainly remained their assigned color. Anne did not, in any way.
Thank you so much for all the work you put into this videos. They are always a joy to watch!
I must say Marilla´s costumes were my favourite. No fuss, no nonsense and that belt was to die for!
Thanks Aysun! I'm not sure if her belt is accurate, I never came across anything like that but Anne Dixon did her research so I'm inclined to think that she saw something like that in her travels.
I wish I had seen a more development in Anne’s dresses. I felt even when she got late into her teens, her dresses didn’t really develop all that much
Great to see you are smart enough to put the sources of pictures in your videos!
Thank you I was waiting for this video because well I love the costumes of this show! My fav costumes are the ones of Miss Stacey and Winnifred Rose.
Thank you so much for commenting! I love their costumes too!
Thank you for the mention of foundation layers. Truly the unsung heroes of historical costumes.
Thanks Epic Walrus. :)
I also love Anne’s story and their costume designs I also love your story telling voice
Thank you so much Heidy! Nice to see you in Nick's stream today.
I love this video. I watched this with my 7 year old daughter and she loves it,too!
Thanks Gardens of Blessings! I hope she didn't find it too boring with all of the "history" lessons! :)

Thank you so much LL!
Awwww, Heidi! This was brilliant! My favorite yet. Well done, you!
Thanks Cindy!
My fav movie everything in it. Watched it over and over again. Even recorded it. Wish there are more episodes. Everyone's costumes are fabulous
Can't picked up the best. I guessed Marilla, Matthew, and Mrs.Barry, she is so funny, hated but love her she's the past and the present of my generation. Thanks for explaining. This is by far the best of Anne of the Green Gable stories.
Thanks so much Julie!
This is awesome! Have you done a video of the Megan Follows Anne Of Green Gables?
Not yet!
hi- I had a quick search to check if you had covered it already but I highly recommend the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society on Netflix. Beautiful film and post WW2 costumes. Love your work and all the effort you put into making these videos. ☺️
Thank you so much Olivia. I loved thar movie. I watched it a few months back. 😁
This video is so well done! Thank you!!

@@Costume_CO thank you! I love yours as well :)
Anne🥰🥳
I love this video and it was so informative, but I have to know, WHERE CAN I GET ANY OF THESE THINGS!!!!!
I just have to ask, are you ever going to do a "Peaky Blinders" costume vid(s) ? Please please please lol, the out fits in that show are some of the best.
Hello, I did start watching it a few years ago but I got distracted and never got back to it.
IMHO the design choice of color-cording characters (having all the schoolgirls except Anne lol wear one color for the entire series) is trite. And I think the hair in the 80s Anne is actually quite period accurate- not a side part in sight and all about the volume and curls for the “Gibson Girl” look of the late 1800’s.
Please do the costumes of Crimson Peak ♥️
I've done it! ruclips.net/video/kvqb-UzBG04/видео.html
Oh my gosh I came back to delete my comment as I just watched your Gentleman Jack video and saw that advert for it. I love your channel but been busy and haven’t had time to watch your entire videography yet. I shall leave this comment up for promo 🔥thanks for replying
Thanks so much the moon. 😊
Costume CO still picking my way through your channel! I even watch videos for media I’ve never seen. Hope you’re well in these ‘rona times. Thanks for sharing your content.
This is a lovely descriptive story of all the costumes. I used to make theatre costumes so I enjoy hearing it all. But why does the narrator keep saying the 20th century when it is the 19th. And 1900 something when it's 1800 hundred something? I keep doing a double take. This happens over and over again. Someone got their centuries seriously mixed up! But - beyond that this is wonderful and very rich! Thank you for the production and its wonderful authentic costumes.
Thanks for commenting Celia. The error was in the script saying 20th century instead of 19th century, although there are a few instances where I meant 20th century. As far as the dates, they are all correct as provided in the historical examples, ranging from the mid 1800s to the early 1900s.
@@Costume_CO Hi Costume Co. Thanks for your reply. I didn't want to appear unappreciative by commenting on the dates. I notice these more because I do some historical research for my writing. Yes the written dates on the screen were correct but at least one was incorrect when spoken. It was more than halfway saying 1996 instead of 1886 or something like that. I remember at least 3 errors in all. I think! Anyway thanks again !
Hopefully when the channel gets bigger I will be able to hire a fact checker. Thanks again for your comment I really appreciate it.
Anne of Green Gables was set in 1876; this is known from dating back Anne's stated age in Rilla of Ingleside, which is set in WW1. The 1980s TV show made the costumes later period, and then had to make Gilbert be the one who went off to war instead of Anne's sons (as happened in the book series) to compensate for the change in date. It's so unnecessary that these TV adaptations don't set Anne in the right period.
Ik this is late and you might not respond but if I wanted to portray a halloween costume based off this show, where could I get a corset and dress and skirt and other stuff like that? If you dont know then that's okay too, thank you!
Btw, I'm 14 years old and live in Canada
Hi Sierra, I'm not making costumes but let me see what I can find. :)
@@Costume_CO that would be totally awesome, thank you!
What do they mean “the bodies are different now than they were then”? It’s only been just over 100 years, human bodies haven’t actually changed much in that time.
The only major difference is the undergarments we wear now as opposed to then. But I would hope that a good costumer would be putting adult women in the same style of undergarments to go with the costumes.
Well, I'm no anthropologist, but the idea is that women would have been wearing corsets from a young age and over time it would distort their figure. On the show, they show that they begin wearing them at 16, but in reality, it would have been whenever they developed and sometimes sooner. Also, people were just a lot smaller and less nourished than they are today.
Costume CO they honestly weren’t much smaller. The major difference is that a higher percentage of people today are overweight or larger. And we’ve also gotten a little taller.
But we know from extant garments that the most common waist size on the dresses of young women was 24 inches, and that would be corseted. So 26-28 inches uncorseted. Which is about a size Small today. So a size 8-10 AU/UK, which I think is a 4-6 US. So while there would have been a higher percentage of young women who were that size, in measurements, they were the same size as young women today.
As for the distortion of bodies thanks to corsets, there’s be some, but not as much as many today think. They don’t break ribs or permanently shift organs or anything. And as mentioned already, they aren’t making the waist measurements smaller than the measurements of today. There are long term issues from wearing corsets everyday, of course- mostly the atrophying of the core muscles due to not using them anymore.
But really, humans haven’t evolved to be different in the last 100 years. We’re still mostly the same, just more likely to be overweight, and maybe an inch or two taller.
You keep saying late 20th century in the video. Isn't it 19th? I could obviously be wrong.
Otherwise, this was really great!!!
Hello, yes it was a mistake in my script. Sorry about that!
@@Costume_CO it's all good! I just thought I had lost it! 😂
Thanks moredena. 😊
But, Josephine Barry's friends were all rich; and could have easily been from New York or Paris, or just about anywhere. She had travelled in her life; and, I had figured that at least some her friends were people she had met while abroad. And, even if they were PEI people, they were RICH PEI people, and could have had clothes and hair supplies shipped over.
What was the dress called that Anne wore when she was riding on Belle to the Hockey game?
Wasn't it just one of her brown dresses but she's wearing a coat on top of it?
Costume CO it looked burgundy to me. It could have been just a brown dress lol
It was a blouse and a skirt. You can see later on in the episode when she returns to Green Gables after visiting the Mi’kmaq village.
The costumes are not authentic as said in the video. They look authentic but are newly made for the film.
If the average viewer cant tell when Anne is wearing wigs, than an average viewer is pretty .... unobservant.
i just want to dress like Marilla and own ten cats.
Please take pictures and send them to me!
