  • Professional poker player and tournament crusher Alex Foxen gives a lesson (or two) to Aram Oganyan in this hand after bluff raising on the river during a high stakes poker tournament in the PokerGO studio in Las Vegas. "Welcome to the studio bro!"
    Jonathan discusses Foxen's decision to check back the flop after being the preflop aggressor. He is very well aware that a flop containing two middling cards is very good for the big blinds range and not so great for his button opening range.
    Always be aware of the capabilities of your opponent when you are playing them. If they are a good and strong player who will have the ability to bluff raise you, you should proceed with caution when firing value bets. Or at least be willing to call at a high frequency with very strong hands if you do decide to lead.
    Alex Foxen is a 32 year old American professional poker player and is a regular at the highest stakes tournaments in the world. He has almost $30,000,000 in live tournament earnings which puts him 21st on the all time money list. He has 1 WSOP bracelet in the $250,000 No Limit Hold'em - Super High Roller where he won $4,563,700. He went on to win this event for $317,000.
    Aram Oganyan is an American poker player originally from Armenia. He has over $2,500,000 in live tournament earnings. Aram ended up coming 3rd in this event for $175,000.
    The 2023 PokerGO Cup was the 3rd iteration of the PokerGO Cup. It was held from inside the PokerGO Studio at Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The series took place from January 11-20, 2023, with eight scheduled events.
    Get ready for some high-stakes poker action in the heart of Las Vegas! In this thrilling PokerGO Cup event with a massive $25,000 buy-in, poker titan Alex Foxen and takes on Aram Oganyan as they go head-to-head in this poker hand at the PokerGO Studio in the Aria Resort & Casino, Las Vegas.
    🃏 Preflop:
    In this gripping hand, Alex Foxen makes a standard raise from the button with AsKh. Aram Oganyan defends his big blind with 87hh as they head to the flop.
    💥 The Flop: 9h 7d 2s
    The flop certainly favours the big blinds range and Foxen knows this as he decides to check back after Oganyan checks from the big blind with his middle pair and many backdoor opportunities.
    🔥 The Turn: Ts
    The turn card now brings an open ended straight draw for Oganyan yet he still decides to check to the aggressive Foxen. Foxen does not fall for the trap and checks back as he still has great showdown potential with his ace high.
    🚀 The River: Js
    This is where the hand gets crazy. Oganyan has now made his straight and Foxen still has.. nothing. Oganyan is fed up of checking and wants to now get some value, he opts for a pot sized bet of 440,000. Foxen who has all the combinations of KQ in his range decides to turn his hand into a bluff and decides to raise to 1,300,000. This puts Oganyan in the blender as he cannot figure out whether to call or fold. Find out what he does in this thrilling poker hand from the PokerGO studio in Las Vegas!

    Wow, what a great find by Foxen in real time.
    Solver will bluff shove this spot 100% with any of the AsKx combos if villain is node locked to potting every one of his straight combos on the river. Hindsight is 20/20 but yeah, Oganyan blindly betting that river without any sort of followup plan is not great to say the least.

    Prime example of why I’ll never be a pro. First, I’m not good enough. Second, even if I was, I just don’t have the nerve for this sort of play. Both played it very well. Bluffing was a good play and so would be folding. Hero also could have played good by calling or folding. If I were Foxen I probably wouldn’t have bluffed, and if I were Oganyan I probably wouldn’t have folded, but that’s why they’re pros and I’m a 3-4bb/100 semi-rec player haha

    The line seems a bit weird - is Foxen repping the higher end of the straight, the flush, or either one? If it is a flush would he have checked back turn? If Foxen had a gutter on the turn, would he have checked that back? I suppose at some frequency he would, but it just seems like it has to be a call for Oganyan. The one hand that makes sense as value for Foxen is KsQs, because that's a hand he wouldn't want to have to fold to a raise, though that hand probably has enough equity to call a jam on the turn.
    I guess from Oganyan's perspective, he knows Foxen knows that he has a straight, so Foxen's line looks really strong.

      He could have easily had a made hand on the turn and checked it back to induce Oganyan to bet it.
      Foxen is IP so he has no urgency getting the money in on the river.
      Plus you want to protect your check back range IP because if you don't then you are easy to exploit as well as you need to check some big hands.
      Foxen could have easily had a made hand on the turn.
      I have no idea hiw common J8 is in Foxen range, but there is that one.
      He could also have checked the flush for a free card as well, got there and not had to bluff it.

    I feel that if Foxen turns a flush draw he probably bets the turn. I feel like the most likely hand to beat you there is KQ. I think 🤔 you're supposed to call there, but I could see 🙈 myself folding there.

    Can we talk about what a mistake it is to bet pot on the river AND have no plan for what to do if raised?
    I get JL’s rationale for checking the river with the straight, but it seems to me the 2nd best option is around 1/2 pot. Betting pot seems like worst option IMO.

    • @stephenbeckwith6242
      @stephenbeckwith6242 6 месяцев назад

      How do you know he didn’t have a plan? His plan may have been bet/fold to jam. Whether it’s a good plan is a whole other question. I think a block sizing may have been better, simply because It’s hard to get called by worse, and Oganyan’s bet looks way too much like value. Pretty ballsy of Foxen to make that raise. I think he placed way too much value on his blocker and just got lucky that Oganyan was able to fold a straight for that price. A lot of players wouldn’t. He just forgot that bluffing was a thing in poker.

    • @tonyneuman1500
      @tonyneuman1500 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@stephenbeckwith6242 I “know” because I watched the video 🤣 Generally when people have a plan, they don’t throw all their time banks in at once to think it through. So, to my original point, he bet large on the river (too large IMO), hadn’t considered at that point what he’d do once raised, and then once surprised by the raise clearly had to come up with a plan on the fly.
      When I make play like this in cash, I generally try to think through “Against this opponent, if I get raised small, I’ll do X and if I get raised large I’ll do Y” and this prevents me from over-thinking if that scenario materializes

    This is a baller raise. I think Oganyan should bet like 1/4 pot on the river. Makes a raise easier to deal with.
    BTW my favorite one liner at a poker table was when a fish called with aces out of the big blind, hit top set against my middle set all the money went in. And when he was scooping the pot he said “that’s why you shouldn’t re-raise preflop with aces”. I should have stayed at the table with this pro fish but I was so tilted I had to walk away.

      Agree, that’s the weird duality of watching these poker clips. They have to be flashy / interesting to get people to watch, but then the result is a high-stakes pro making some non-GTO play that doesn’t apply to most people watching the Educational content 🤔
      I guess Charitably, we do get to learn the overall strategic thought process, as well as more GTO approach for preflop + flop + turn, and we should be smart enough to know how to deviate for our low stakes game.
      Idk tho I lose at 1/2 live poker when I commute to my local casino 😂🎉

    • @gnoel5722
      @gnoel5722 6 месяцев назад

      I agree and I would add to this; it is a very similar thing with all the ''GTO plays'' review/guide of hands . The problem with following the solver is that it will find bluffs that people will NEVER use in live poker or maybe 0.1% of the elite perfect GTO players would attempt. So because it finds those bluffs for the villain, it will call lighter than you should in a normal tournament with average players. Remember people; 99% of poker players over-call because they fear getting bluffed and under-raise because they are scared and don't want to look like a fish.

There are certainly other hand that beat me, but as far as the nut flush goes, I'm only worried about two combos.

    Favorite one liner - was mine. I made a great call and the other player started yelling at me for making a "stupid call". I didn't say anything at first, but after several minutes of his ranting I finally said, "Sir, I don't know why you are yelling at me. I'm not the one who misplayed the hand."
    Also, in this situation had I been in Oganyan's shoes I would have called. The analysis for why:
    1) Foxen is very aggressive and bluffs a lot.
    2) Had he really had a potential nut hand (like nut flush) he would have bet the turn.
    3) And finally, had he really made the nuts on the river, he would have shoved rather than leaving himself 400K behind. With the pot at 1.32M after the call, the shove is less than a pot size reraise. And if he wanted to get called, he would want to try and represent that he was bluffing - and a shove would be the move. to represent the bluff and get max value if he is called.

    Terrible river lead and sizing. There was 440k in pot and he leads river for that same amount potting it, what hand calls u there that u beat??? Also both flush ( making it worse oganyan doesnt hold a spade) and higher straights get there that easily could be played similarly by foxen. Oganyan should have checked river he could call any reasonable bet by foxen and induce a bluff and minimize loss's when hes actually beat. Even a small blocker bet wouldve been a better 2nd option as you could be called by worse and to less incentivise a reraise as well. He literally picked the worst option possible and foxen took advantage
