  • Have you ever folded pocket kings preflop? Not many people have, especially when they only have 19 big blinds in a poker tournament! Watch to see if Juan Pardo can make the correct fold in a $125,000 Triton Poker Main Event in London. He gets a bit of extra information in this poker hand that he shouldn't have had. That might make this decision a little easier. What do you think?
Only 6 players remain in the $125,000 Triton Main Event and the ICM pressure is huge as the pay jumps for each place are extremely significant. Juan Pardo will be fully aware of this which could factor into his decision as he sits there with the 2nd best hand in all of poker.
Jonathan agrees with Chidwick's decision to cold 4-bet from the small blind vs the 3-bet from Thorel. AK suited is a poker hand that should be more than happy getting all of the money in for less than 40 big blinds preflop. One of the first things you learn as a poker player is that when it goes raise, re-raise and then re-raise from 3 different players - you should fold almost everything! This includes Dan 'Jungleman' Cates' pocket jacks that he correctly pitches into the muck very quickly when facing the 4-bet from Chidwick.
Jonathan is shocked that Juan Pardo managed to find the correct fold with pocket kings in this spot. You just have to know so specifically that one of your opponents has aces to find this fold. Jonathan says that Chidwick is often going to use Ax as 4-bet bluffs and even his 4-bets for value which then will block the combinations of specifically pocket aces that Thorel could have.
Jean-Noel Thorel is a 76 year old French amateur poker player. He has over $13,800,800 in live tournament earnings putting him in the top 100 on the all-time money list, and 2nd on the French all time money list. He is an entrepreneur and pharmacist. He is the founder and CEO of Naos, a French cosmetics company. This poker result was a career high score for him.
Stephen Chidwick is a 34 year old professional poker player from England. He has over $53,000,000 in live tournament earnings putting him top 5 on the all-time money list.
Juan Pardo Domínguez is a professional poker player from Spain. He has over $8,000,000 in live tournament earnings putting him 169th on the all-time money list.
This Triton series was held at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House, London, United Kingdom, it had 17 events ranging with buy-ins from $25,000 up to $200,000 in No Limit Hold'em, Pot Limit Omaha and Short-Deck.
🔥 This hand took place during the 2023 $125,000 Triton Poker Series London Main Event! The blinds were at 200k/400k/400k(Big Blind Ante) and this preflop war will have you on the edge of your seat!
    💥 Pre-flop Fireworks:
Juan Pardo, a high stakes poker professional from Spain, opens the action with a raise to 400,000 from under the gun, but Thorel in the hijack quickly responds with a 3-bet to 1,000,000. The plot thickens as Stephen Chidwick in the small blind decides to make his move, and 4-bets to 2,300,000. In an unexpected turn, Thorel makes an out-of-turn shove, putting his entire stack of 7,700,000 on the line. With this extra information Pardo decides to make the fold, and Chidwick now faces a crucial decision for almost 20 big blinds. Find out what they all had by watching this poker video!

Do YOU think Juan Pardo would have still folded if Jean-Noel Thorel did not shove out of turn?

No, I don't think he would fold there had it not been for the out of turn action. As for the question, have I ever folded KK preflop? Not that I can remember. If I did, it would have been in a satellite where 3 people got a seat and I was chip leader. I do recall being in that position once where I simply waited everyone out to claim my seat, but that was 20 years ago, so I don't remember if I ever had any extremely strong hands.

@marksimpson2321 the irony is that, in a vacuum, JNT made a mistake. But because Pardo folded, that got him action from Chidwick, so the premature allin actually got him an extra couple million chips.

Chidwick is really upset, and Pardo is really happy, that JNT jammed out of turn. If he hadn't, it would have most likely ended up with Chidwick getting away from it and Pardo being stacked instead.

Yes, I folded KK once several years ago in a casino tourney. Early in tourney, 1st Pos raised normal, I am in 3rd pos with KK and I 3-bet to 3x raise. Then, 6th pos re-raises all-in. And 1st pos also goes all-in. I look at both guys and say, "it feels like at least one of you have aces" I fold my KK face-up. The other two guys turn their cards over, and both of them have AA.

Never folded kings but could see doing it in a spot with massive ICM implications. However, I think I’m more likely to fold AK than KK since with AK you’re most likely flipping or chopping at best. With KK, normally, you have more equity.

Such an insane dynamic spot, esp when so many of the hands your opponents can have block your outs to improve, or are crushing you, or you're crushing them. It would be interesting to do a breakdown of this hand from each player's perspective. That's somewhat what this video is, but to really focus on some of the key positions from start to end would also be interesting.
I was surprised how quickly the pocket jacks went into the muck. I understand the logic and I'm sure it was correct, it was just surprising initially.

I've folded KK twice preflop. Right both times. First, 4 handed final table. OMC I play with for years opens UTG. I three bet. Folds to OMC who jams. He was the table short. I was chip leader. But it was a bit % of my stack to call. I show my KK and muck. One of the other players called collusion. Before the floor came over OMC showed his AA. Second time, 125 person Saturday local tour. 17 left. Utg (chip leader) opens unusually large. He was ABC player. Fish flats. I'm 2nd in chips on button I 3 bet KK unusually large to get UTG a bad price to call. But UTG goes all in. I fold. Fish calls w 99. Utg had AA. He's not 4 betting AK or QQ. So he has AA or KK. I block most KK so it was an easy fold. He and I chopped heads up a few hrs later

Deep tournament, All in from early position ( 10BB+), all in from another player, and a flat from a very tight player ( deep stack) in late position.

I folded pocket KK's preflop in a WSOP 2023 $1500 tourney, play was UTG simple raise. I in MP raised 3X his total bet. High Jack called, everyone else folded. Back to WTG, raises all in (effectively 10X my bet or 60BB). The difficulty in my spot was action behind me as well as the all in. I agonized over it, but rationalized a fold that it was early tournament and could recover if I was letting it go. I also felt the HJ was a conservative player that could possibly smooth call behind and the all in raiser either had it or didn't but may it an incredibly tough position for me to come along, had it been h2h I would have called and lived with it but both opportunity for either to have it just felt that I was behind. I folded KK, the high jack also folded face up showing QQ, and I later mentioned to that player I had folded KK. The UTG player didn't show. I know many will side I should have shoved, maybe I should have since later in the tourney(about 5 hours later) I busted out anyway. 🙂

I folded KK preflop a few weeks ago.
Some background info on villain: only seen him three bet two or three times, he had AA each time. Saw him flat AQs and AK before in a multiway pot, so he is super, super tight and passive. Earlier in the session, I doubled up through him when I bet called a three bet preflop with 77 and flopped a set. He has like $1000 in 1-2, I have $400. Check, call, check, het bets $50, I min raise, and he goes all in.
So the hand I folded KK. After I had doubled up through him, maybe 2 hours later (and by this time I had 900-1000 in my stack) I open UTG to 4 BB, he three bets in later position to 15 BB. The button or small blind flats. I four bet to 60 BB. He goes all in, has me covered, for like $1000 or $1100. So his five bet is from 55 BB to 500 BB. I folded without thinking too long.

I open she 3 bets I 4 bet and she rips it. Folding kings pre is probably one of the most difficult things to do even when you know you need to. I call, and the entire time im praying that a K comes out because i knew it was my only shot at seeing my stack again but low and behold both of my outs were probably thrown in the muck and forgotten about by old man coffee #1 and #2. She flips over the aces and i beat myself up so bad that day and to make it better not long after i lost another buyin with kings full to quads. By far the worst day I've ever had playing poker. I only had 5bbs and I would have won the hand and basically quadrupled up if I called, so I felt a little sick about the fold afterwards. Villain one checks
    Villain two checks
    I raise the pot.
First villain folds, second villain, re-raises three times my bet.

He did not show me the cards. But I knew I made a great play and when we came back from a break I casually asked him if he had an ace there and he let it slip that he did. A Q suited.

Understand the fold with ICM, although still so hard to do real time. Absolute legend. Folded Kings once preflop, but it was actually pretty easy. Total nit opens 4x from UTG, three bet next to him, even nittier guy takes one look at his cards on the button and shoves faster than Usain Bolt. I look down at two red Kings in the big blind, and laugh as I fold. UTG re shoves, three bettor shrugs and calls, Aces versus Queens versus Aces. UTG and the button chop up the three bettor's chips, and I move on to the next hand. Real time tells can make you do some crazy things in this great game...

I have folded KK preflop but it was a situation where I was playing micro-stakes cash against players that ONLY 4-bet AA/KK (1% 4bet over their hand histories with me) and I had KK blocking KK so I knew I was dead (6 combos of AA and 1 combo of KK, maybe they had some AKs occasionally as bluff but that is only a max of 2 combos of hands I'm ahead of and 1 combo I'm usually chopping against 6 combos I'm dead to; this was also a massive all-in 4-bet vs size of pot). Very specific situation against players that probably don't exist in the wild these days (this was a while back). The other main time it is correct is a satellite tournament where there is a bunch of short stacks and you're a big stack vs the only other big stacks all in on the bubble (ICM correct but I don't play satellites much so it never came up for me).

First, let me start by saying I have no idea what the payouts are here or the money bumps for an ICM calculation. However, I have to imagine they are large for a high roller tournament like this one. Thorel and Chadwick have very similar stack sizes in play (Cates also has a similar size)... I have to think there is a HUGE ICM Risk Premium here for Pardo, the short stack. Regardless of who wins Thorel or Chadwick, assuming they end up all in, this helps Pardo just to FOLD and hang around for the money bump. I would think that his calling or jamming range post FLOP to this much aggression would be insanely thin due to ICM... maybe not "Kings thin", but damn close. I can justify a FOLD here hoping these two bigger stacks can eliminate one or the other from contention. This is a tough Fold but I think it is a well thought out one by Pardo. GTO'wise this is probably a call, but he made the correct exploit. Much respect for him finding the right Fold here.
PS: I think Thorel saved Pardo his stack by acting out of turn... I also think he acted out of turn on purpose (a bit of an angle) with the incorrect thought that he had a better chance against one opponent, and he wanted a fold.

So... here's my take. In a cash game, I don't think you can fold KK pre. Maybe in very special circumstances with a solid read of the villains you could possibly do it but it should be extraordinarily rare. In a tournament, I do think it's possible. It still requires pretty special circumstances, but I have actually seen it.

    1. Super aggro table, hero limps UTG with KK with the intent to back-raise. UTG+1 shoves ~$30. Super aggro player in MP 3! to $75. BTN who has been playing super tight rips it in for $400. Hero tank folds, MP snap calls the $400. MP=77, BTN=AA, and of course the runout was Kxxxx.
    2. Hero UTG+1 opens to $11, MP 3! to $25, folds around to hero who 4! to $75. MP 5! to $225, leaving himself about $75 behind. Hero folds KK face-up. MP was nice enough to show that he indeed had AA.

I’ve folded them once in 1-3 $300 max, I opened to $15, loose player raises to $35, extremely tight old man makes it $200. He had AA.I immediately folded it, didn’t even think about it, he had aces written on his forehead. 95% of low stakes players have AA or KK if they are trying to put their stack in preflop.

some spots rule j.n. thorel's out of turn shove counts if pardo either calls or folds. others only if he folds is it forced to count. i'd bet jonathan knows which is more frequent, i'm thinking it's the first (if so the "action didn't change" till a raise was made). "changing" referring to the size of the bet, here j.n. thorel said "all in" vs what he thought was the 1.3 mil raise from chidwick. but if pardo first shoves for his remaining stack more than the 1.3, then thorel's not committed to go all in.

    • @jasonbatteiger2421

I folded KK... The situation was:
I played cash game in GGPoker 6-max 100bb stack
UTG raises 2x, UTG-1 3-bets 6.5x, I was sitting on LJ with KK.
I had a statistic of around 200 hands, that opponent on UTG-1 had around 2-3% of 3-bets, and he was sitting in a early pos.
I decided just to call with KK on LJ, but then initial raiser on UTG went 4-bet and UTG-1 went all-in
It was a very tough spot, I decided to finally fold there, and saw QQ on UTG and KK on UTG-1...

Once in an online 6-max 0.25/0.50. UTG had AA, hijack or cutoff 3b and tight reg on button 4b with the other AA. I mucked KK in the big blind. Do remember one of the AA actually won as 4 of same suit were dealt out. Ouch!

I have folded KK once in my life. It was the one time I think a large portion of players can recognize the fold, wasn't super crazy. Live 2/5 full ring:
    UTG ~1200 opens to $15.
UTG+1 ~$2500, raise to $45. (Fairly tight reg)
Button (me) ~$2500, raise to $115.
    SB All in for ~$450
    UTG All in for ~1200.
    UTG+1 All in for ~2500.
Then I snap mucked because like wtf....???
Reveal: UTG+1 had AA, obviously. SB had JJ. UTG never showed, but i assume he had QQ or the remaining combo of KK, maybe AK seems like a stretch

    KK in SB. $1/$3 .
Folds to BTN (not a lot of exp with him. He seems aggro, seen him playing at $2/&5 often, maybe tricky, not sure), some how. He limps.
    I RFI to $15.
    BB (loose gambler) calls
    BTN 3Bets to $65
    I hesitate a second & flat.
    BB shoves for $135-$140ish
    BTN Calls!
I hesitate. Say something thinning out loud about him just calling and not reraising...
    He says he couldn't reraise
Dealer says yeah Action was not reopened
Other players at the table say No!! The action was reopened when BB shoved. Raise is an option. Got a tad chaotic.
Dealer says ok. They are right.
So I try to ask well on that case does BTN not get to decide if he wants to raise since he thought the action was closed & the dealer as far as I could remeber told him that. But dealer & BTN didn't seem to understand & I figured I might be out of line even asking but I legitimately didn't know & preferred to know if he would shove given the option.
In my eyes, for him to simply call narrowed his range to like 1% but if he thought he had no option, then that told me nothing.
    I reluctantly folded.
BTN had AKs vs BB 2h3h
Fwiw 23 made 2 pairs and won, lol.

Looks a bit borderline collusion between pardo and JNT.
There are a couple ways to view the out of turn allin.
    A. As an angle,
-to discourage an allin from Pardo, which ia not something you want to really do with AA and a covering stack.
-to level Chidwick into calling lighter-which is a bit wild, however chidwixk does stack off with AK here. Of course its better to be allin vrs the shortstack and not the bigstack... but that said maybe thats not how JNT is thinking, he may just want the blood vrs Chidwick.
    B. As a complete premature action due to excitement.
Im going with that it was somehow intentional. The worst case is he has a piece of Pardo and wants to let Pardo know that he can get out of the way... the fold of KK is the input here that sells the collusion story imo. A premature allin, imo defaults to angular play, to which the angle is to solicit more folds from the shortstack, which is not something JNT should be looking for here... because if Chidwick is bluffing and JNT solicits a fold from Pardo, hes lost about 2.5million in cEV by causing pardo to fold... however its not a loss if he has a big piece of Pardo.

    • @Andre-ef6iv
      @Andre-ef6iv 5 месяцев назад

it was angle 100%, jnt is dirty tricky old mf. he did this multiple times to act out of turn on purpose to gain edge. he just wanted all in vs 1 player instead of 2 in this spot.
