Awesome video! Glad I am subscribed. My biggest issue when meditating is pins and needles in my feet which becomes unbearable and I have to get up eventually. Despite sitting several long retreats some which involved intensive meditation, the most I could sit comfortably for was 45 minutes before the sensations became unbearable and my legs would start to cramp. I hope to find a solution to this. Peace and happiness, dear friend.
Hello 👋 :) feel free to move your body n legs before cramping. Maybe the way you sit prevents the blood flow from moving easily hence the feeling of needles and the cramps. Maybe something is blocking the blood circulation in your lower body. Hope you find a solution.
Hi Thank you. Very useful to watch. The bench is curved. Will the highest point and curved position whether will hold strong the ground. I am planning to make one. Thank you again.
Thanks great video. When I sit cross legged I notice that my hip is always tilted sideways consequently one shoulder being lower than the other. And when I use the bench I get knee pain because of the angle in the knees. Sitting on a chair seems to be my only option.
I am so unused to sitting upright when my back isn't leaning against something that I find myself making so many micro-adjustments to my posture - where are my shoulders? am I stooping? Is my head straight? It seems like a full-time job just managing my posture. In short, I find most recommended postures the most unrelaxed postures. Maybe I'll get better at it.
In your case, you could just try meditating on a chait with back support. One doesn't to sit in any particular way. If you find yourself being distracted by your posture, find a way to still still: on a couch or chair with back support, or even lay down too. But if you continue to sit straight (stay relaxed at the same time), you will become more still as you build the muscles in your body. Let me know how your practice goes. Good luck friend
Hi Patricia, I found it on amazon: www.amazon.com/Meditation-Bench-Acacia-Wood-Burgundy/dp/B01N97LSYE/ref=sr_1_9?crid=11ORIPCIGITBX&keywords=meditation%2Bbench&qid=1562310006&s=gateway&sprefix=meditation%2Bbench%2Caps%2C189&sr=8-9&th=1
In which position do you meditate? Cross legged? Lotus? What really matters is that you find a comfortable position that does not lead to physical pain as the pain will distract you from your object of meditation and you could damage seriously your knees. Whether you sit on a chair or on a meditation cushion does not matter ... just make sure to relax and keep your back straight.
@@PeacefulBreathing Thank you very much for your wonderful suggestions. I seat on Lotus position without using cushion for last 10 years for 45 minutes which I have increased these days to almost 2 hrs and I guess after 40-45 min I feel pain in my knee and some time also in back which I usually ignore. Though I ignore it keeps distracting me. Will there any effect to my knee and back if I continuously ignore pain and seat still in future?
@@madhusudhan10 For sure, do not take knee and back pain lightly or else if you get injured, the pain will come in your time outside of the meditation. If you can sit in lotus position for x amount of minutes, you can increase it by a few mins. For 40/45 mins to 2 hours is quite a big jump and your body is not used to it. Stay in lotus position for a few more minutes and then do the rest of the meditation in a more comfortable position. Like I said, find a position comfortable enough so you don't have to move and at some point, discomfort will come and it's good to meditate on discomfort but we have to be mindful of our body too.
Helped me quite a lot tbh thank you. Sitting with my legs crossed hurts my knees as I havent done so since I was in primary school sat on the carpet with my finger over my lips during prayer time🤣👍
@@PeacefulBreathing Thats wonderful. I find that sitting very straight like that my muscles get sore after a period and I have trouble diaphragm breathing. Is that normal?
Try to find a position where your back is straight but also relaxed. We want to find a position where we can sit for a while without creating tensions or problem breathing. It could be that your body isn’t used to it and is building the muscles to sit like that but if you start feeling pain, adjust your posture to be comfortable.
I bought it with the mat at a Deer Park monastery in Escondido, California. I don't think they sell them online though. There are 2 other centers like Deer Park in the US if that's where you live, one in BlueCliff New York and one in Magnolia Grove Monastery, Mississippi

Hi! Yes, feel free to move around to get more comfortable and readjust your posture. Thank you for your sitting instructions. Are there any tips for helping with numbing of the ankles and/or legs? This numbing happens both with the bench (mostly numbing in my feet) and the cross-legged with cushion (numbing in both feet and legs). Happens after about 15-20 mins sitting. Thank you!
Hi Dr Ruben. I used to have the same discomfort. When sitting cross-legged, see if you can create a tripod with your knees and the cushion. You will probably have to raise the height of your cushion quite a bit. Sitting like this will alleviate the weight on your ankle. But this position require to be flexible from the hips. When using a bench, try raising the height of the bench or add a blanket on top of the bench to take the weight off your legs and ankles. Also you can sit in such a way that your ankle and feet are resting outside of your sitting mat. That should help you ankles. Hope that was useful.
😂 I crossed my legs and was just there and when someone called me 2 hours passed my legs were numb I couldn't stand up and I had to drag myself to my phone
Cushion is good if you feel comfortable on it. If you don't feel comfortable on it, then your body will try to balance itself and that can cause some strain in your lower back for example. That is the main reason why I use a meditation bench. But in general, the upper body should be straight and at the same time relaxed. If you can't do that on a cushion, it's also fine to sit on a chair. Does that help ?
Yes, absolutely. Just keep in mind that the way we sit influences our meditation. If you sit on your couch and sofa, it will be conducive to feeling relaxed and that's completely fine if that is your intention with your meditation. Sometimes, when i want to fully relax in meditation, I even lay down. But most of the time, I prefer to sit on my bench because it helps me to be more straight and that is conducive to feeling more alert and awake. Just pay attention to how you sit makes you feel and change it if it doesn't support your intention or needs. Does that make sense?
Actually, I have learned that relaxation can start either with the mind or with the body. But usually, I find that starting by relaxing the body is easier than relaxing the mind. The way i relax my body is by scanning the different parts of it and on the outbreath, releasing the tensions that have been trapped there ... forehead, neck and shoulders, arms, chest, belly, upper back, lower back, legs ...
Thank you for the video! 😊 I've had a Zafu cushion for a long time but wasn't sitting far enough forward on it. I was treating it as you would a regular cushion, but using your tripod analogy has really helped me. I just have to fluff up the cushion so that it doesn't stay in that shape afterwards! 😁
Hi Mike, you can try meditation lying down on the floor. If you feel too sleepy you can also open your eyes or even stand up with your knees slightly bent and your back straight and relaxed.
Hi! I just started uploading again. I think you’ll find my latest video helpful as I share about what I wish I knew before starting meditation: ruclips.net/video/BQglZbHGDII/видео.html
Hi Vikash, tell me more about your condition. Is there a way you can sit comfortably? Or do you need to lay down? Or do you feel more comfortable to stand?
Thank you very much sir for give attention on my problem. Sir I can sit on chair, but after 10-15 min I feel light lower back pain.i can lay down comfortably but then I get sleep in meditation
@@vikashsharma6815 One option would be to alternate between sitting and standing up. When sitting becomes uncomfortable, change position from sitting to standing up and maintain your mindfulness as you transition and continue your meditation. When standing up, make sure to have a slight bend in your knees so you don't lock your legs and feet should be about hip distance apart. Neck, shoulders and arms relaxed. One of my teacher, Tara Brach, meditates standing up. The Buddha had also back pain and would meditate in other position than sitting. There is also walking meditation if walking can alleviate your pain. Does this help? Let me know.
@@vikashsharma6815 You're very welcome. Feel free to comment on the videos if you need some advices. I plan to make more videos starting in January 2020!
No, if you sit on a chair, it is better as you can rest your feet and leg. But if you don't sit on a chair, or even sit on a chair, the most important is to find a stable and comfortable position so you can stay like this for a while without creating pain in your body. Does it make sense?
Hi Diana, I have purchased it on amazon. I think you can just look for meditation bench. You can also purchase it from small vendors online. Best, Olivier
It's 100% fine. Most people want to sit for meditation so those are tips for sitting meditation but you can lie down and it's fine as well. If you lie down, u might feel sleepy so one thing is to create and maintain some slight effort in your position. You can do that by bending you knees and keeping your feet flat on the floor as you lie down.
Hi Bobby, that was just a chair from ikea. But I'd recommend not to buy it because it wasn't so great. If you have the resources, I'd advise a Herman Miller chair or a Steelcase leap chair. They are expensive but you can find some on Craigslist between $250 and $500. It's expensive but given the time we spend sitting on a chair ... I think it is worth to get a comfortable chair. Good luck and thx for stopping by!
I usually meditate 2 times a day between 25 to 30 minutes. On weekends, my schedule is a bit off but during the weekdays I try to be consistent. But I worked up to that. At the beginning, I used to meditate once a day for 5 or 10 minutes. Take it slow, u have ur whole life to practice. Most importantly, enjoy it
You’d have to try it. I am 5”7 and it took me a while to get used to the bench. So it may be a bit uncomfortable. I see now more options with meditation chairs where you can sit cross legged and have back support and also support for your legs.
You don’t really have to try too hard. If the position becomes painful, then change to something more comfortable. The pain will become a distraction and can lead to injury. If you feel discomfort, stay with it for a while. It’s just about becoming aware of the discomfort, noticing the desire for change and staying with it. If it passes, notice it. If it stays and becomes painful, move around and change your position.
I started meditating Yesterday with my legs crossed sitting on a mattress hands one on other below belly and First day was good. From second session my back started to pain while sitting. I am not sitting too long 3-5 minuets at stretch and keeping my back loose as recommended. When I tried to support my back along wall during meditation to counter back pain, body becomes tighter and I did not felt good. I am not able to sit without support not even 1 min at a stretch and feel uncomfortable in meditation. Please suggest.
Then I recommend to simply sit on a chair. Sitting on the floor cross legged is not important. What’s important is to sit comfortably and feel stable or else, the physical sensations of pain will distract you during meditation. So remember, the most important is to sit comfortably and be stable.
It's completely fine. If you feel comfortable and can breathe well, then by all means continue what works for you. Keep in mind that the way the body is can also influence the meditation. Meditating on the couch invites relaxation for example. If you sit straight on a chair for example, it can invite more alertness and a sense of solidity. So one day, you could try that to see how different it is and which you like better. Sometimes, I meditate lying down to relax even more. But most of the time, I meditate using a meditation bench because I like it better. Do what suits you!

Why do I have knee pain while doing meditation? I m seating almost 2 hr for meditation each day from last 2 month.
@@PeacefulBreathing Thank you 🙏🙏🙏

@@PeacefulBreathing Thats wonderful. I find that sitting very straight like that my muscles get sore after a period and I have trouble diaphragm breathing. Is that normal?
Try to find a position where your back is straight but also relaxed. We want to find a position where we can sit for a while without creating tensions or problem breathing. It could be that your body isn’t used to it and is building the muscles to sit like that but if you start feeling pain, adjust your posture to be comfortable.
It’s also completely fine to sit on a chair and use the back support
awesome video!! I was wondering where am I able to buy the cushion in the second part of the video?
I bought it with the mat at a Deer Park monastery in Escondido, California. I don't think they sell them online though. There are 2 other centers like Deer Park in the US if that's where you live, one in BlueCliff New York and one in Magnolia Grove Monastery, Mississippi
Very good information 🙏
Where can I buy the bench to sit for the meditation?

I just bought it online (amazon)

Thank you for this video, I just started doing 1hr meditation and I was wondering if it's a bad thing that once in a while I move to get more comfortable
Hi! Yes, feel free to move around to get more comfortable and readjust your posture. Maybe take a moment/a few breaths before you move your body to notice your state of mind and how the physical pain for example affects your thoughts. And then move mindfully, aware of your body as you get into a more comfortable position. I started uploading new videos . Hope you are well and safe 🙂

Me too! My ankles are always hurting and numb
😂 I crossed my legs and was just there and when someone called me 2 hours passed
my legs were numb
I couldn't stand up and I had to drag myself to my phone
thank you teacher.. my main concern is back pain. After you sit on cushion, what is the position on body, would you lean forward bit?
Cushion is good if you feel comfortable on it. If you don't feel comfortable on it, then your body will try to balance itself and that can cause some strain in your lower back for example. That is the main reason why I use a meditation bench. But in general, the upper body should be straight and at the same time relaxed. If you can't do that on a cushion, it's also fine to sit on a chair. Does that help ?
Super informative, thank you! 👍🏽
Glad it help! Feel free to browse my channel for more tips and let know how your practice goes!
thanks for the video. Can I meditate in my couch or sofa?
Yes, absolutely. Just keep in mind that the way we sit influences our meditation. If you sit on your couch and sofa, it will be conducive to feeling relaxed and that's completely fine if that is your intention with your meditation. Sometimes, when i want to fully relax in meditation, I even lay down. But most of the time, I prefer to sit on my bench because it helps me to be more straight and that is conducive to feeling more alert and awake. Just pay attention to how you sit makes you feel and change it if it doesn't support your intention or needs. Does that make sense?
@@PeacefulBreathing It makes sense. Thanks so much! My intention is forget about my body so I can be fully relax. I meditate for +1 hour a day
Actually, I have learned that relaxation can start either with the mind or with the body.
Very helpful, thank you!❤
You’re very welcome!
Where can I get the bench
I got mine on Amazon
I like that Native American inspired blanket. Where did you get it?
I got it on Etsy. If you search for men poncho, you should be able to find it. So many cool other ponchos.
Cool. Don't hesitate to add some blankets or other things to adjust your position. Enjoy!
Mine is the 100 like without unlikes. Congrats for the virtual positive feedback ^_^
Thank you!
I have trouble sitting due to having hip replacement few years ago..Is there any other way for me..Thank you , 🙏
Hi Mike, you can try meditation lying down on the floor. If you feel too sleepy you can also open your eyes or even stand up with your knees slightly bent and your back straight and relaxed.

Hello Sir , I have disc bulge L4 L5 , suggest right posture for me
Hi Vikash, tell me more about your condition.
Thank you sir,god bless you

Is it a must for our feet to be grounded as we sit
No, if you sit on a chair, it is better as you can rest your feet and leg. But if you don't sit on a chair, or even sit on a chair, the most important is to find a stable and comfortable position so you can stay like this for a while without creating pain in your body. Does it make sense?
Where can I buy this curved meditation bank? Have you a link for me?
Hi Diana, I have purchased it on amazon. I think you can just look for meditation bench. You can also purchase it from small vendors online. Best, Olivier
What about lying down? Or is that not recommended? I am severely underweight and lying down currently is the easiest and most comfortable for me.
@@PeacefulBreathing Thank you for your response and the helpful video. I'll keep that in mind.
What chair was that? I need a new office chair and that one is exactly what I need.
How long do you usually mediate
I usually meditate 2 times a day between 25 to 30 minutes. On weekends, my schedule is a bit off but during the weekdays I try to be consistent. But I worked up to that. At the beginning, I used to meditate once a day for 5 or 10 minutes. Take it slow, u have ur whole life to practice. Most importantly, enjoy it
I'm considering getting one of those benches. I am. 6ft 1in. tall. A do you think these work for tall people?
You’d have to try it. I am 5”7 and it took me a while to get used to the bench. So it may be a bit uncomfortable. I see now more options with meditation chairs where you can sit cross legged and have back support and also support for your legs.
foter.com/meditation-chairs this has a few options. Sitting on a regular chair is also an option which is perfectly fine.
I get hip pain, specifically my right hip is there anything I can do to fix this. Never mind I should of watched the whole video before commenting 🙂
Haha, did the video help you? Do you need further help?
@@PeacefulBreathing yeah it helped thanks, I still have pain in my left hip but it’s manageable with some of the tips in this video, thanks
For how long would you experiment to see which position is working for you ? I am trying to not give up on a position before trying another one.
I usually meditate sitting on the couch. it it ok?
It's completely fine. If you feel comfortable and can breathe well, then by all means continue what works for you. Keep in mind that the way the body is can also influence the meditation. Meditating on the couch invites relaxation for example. If you sit straight on a chair for example, it can invite more alertness and a sense of solidity. So one day, you could try that to see how different it is and which you like better. Sometimes, I meditate lying down to relax even more. But most of the time, I meditate using a meditation bench because I like it better. Do what suits you!
