    The thing I love about Auston Matthews, is that there seems to be a young generation of American fans who really look up to him. As a Toronto kid, it’s really cool to see people from around the league not just shitting on the Leafs. I don’t even consider myself a “Leafs fan” more of a Knights fan, but I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t want to see Toronto win in my lifetime (like with Montreal, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Vancouver) I think the celebration would be world class and ultimately good for the sport. Passion fuels passion, plus with the influx of American talent, it would add a bit of complexity if some of the best American talent plays for a Canadian team, the inverse has been true for a long time, it’s cool to see an American player come up to Canada and really embrace it in way Matthews has.

      When did you become a Knights fan? Their first year, when they went to the finals or last year when they won a cup?
      If you don't cheer for the home team, you dont understand what being a real sports fan is. Your a bandwagoner. Just like every guy that grew up in Toronto in the 80s that calls themselves a Bruins and Oilers fan and hates Toronto just because they were garbage in the 80s. Just like every kid my age that latched onto the Sidney Crosby bandwagon or the Ovi band wagon. 😅
      You know how many times I've wished that I didn't have to be a Toronto fan? I hate that city. But I was born into it. If you get to choose ans be wishy washy about who you cheer for then you will never understand the strife and pain that diehard fans go through.

      And what did mathews embrace? He's been given everything he asked for and has been overpaid for 2 contracts now that should have been one contract 8 year x 11.5 million. Real hockey fans understand that you should get paid for wins. Not for individual stats and records... and he has one playoff series win. The greedy 4 have ruined the window for a dynasty team.
      Buy a Morgan Reilly jersey. He's the only key guy on that team that actually cares about winning and isn't being massively overpaid and actually plays 60 minutes every night.

      Yeah it's crazy. And while some dude practicing over and over at a rink could reasonably get to that catch and release speed, the fact Matthews can do it that fast, plus pick his corner, plus have goalie awareness, plus have spatial awareness of opposing players and their stick positions, plus actually getting some power on the shot is what is crazy.
      Cause he does all this while also calculating whether he has to do something else to make the most of the opportunity, and you can bet that release will turn into a curl and drag or delay or something different altogether if it has to.

Many players seem to panic when they have the puck and as they are taught to "shoot" the puck at the net, but Matthews doesn't do that. He takes the extra second for execution which seems to make all the difference in the world.

His ability to see the game developing in real time coupled with his extremely high game IQ lets him almost see the future and get into wide open spaces in dangerous areas. The Germans have a word for him, Raumdeuter, or space interpreter. Hes not the most physically gifted or athletically imposing. There were 17 years between Gretzky's last 50 goal season and Ovi's first (rookie season). That's over a full generation of NHL talent before Ovi's burst onto the scene. It's unbelievable to think that Matthews is starting to generate his own whispers before Ovi has even overtaken The Great One. He is having an absolutely great season. No doubt. But let's see how it translates in the Playoffs. I think that's Toronto's biggest fear. As a Panther fan, their series last year, I was expecting Matthews to have an impact and he was just...I would have believed you if you said he wasn't on the ice. But we defended him really well. Let's see how it goes for em. He's a great player.

    • @williamrobinson604

      It would be a fun series if the Leafs and Panthers meet up in the playoffs again this year. Last year the Leafs got slapped around by 3 or 4 Panthers. They've made some moves to negate that happening again. I think that would be a great series.

    • @peacebringer8
      @peacebringer8 10 месяцев назад

      He was playing injured, and the Panthers doing cheap stuff, like slashing to his wrist and stuff like that, of course, gets to his performance. Just injure the guy and you don't have to worry about him. That has been Panther's method of success.
      He is still JUST under a PPG player in Playoffs. People just like to hate. The problem with the Leafs that Dubas has built has always been too much Forward power and too little Defensive power. Put that against a team that murders you when you're attacking (E.G. Bennett on Knies), the hottest Playoff Goalie apart from Vasylevsky and a super fast on the end-to-end and you got yourself a pretty hard matchup.

    Why do people always add a disclaimer "in modern times". I am in my 70's and can still vividly remember Gretzky's 92nd goal. That was in 1982 and as far as I can recollect, times were pretty modern. The IBM 5150 was just released and the mobile phone had been on the market for 8 years by then. The US had already landed on the moon several times and other than last week's face plant, that little modern thing hasn't been repeated.

      Definition of modern: relating to the present or recent times as opposed to the remote past.

Rule changes, streamlined goalie equipment, and cracking down on interference have opened up goal scoring again. Yes, Matthews is amazing and what he's doing is incredible.. but get used to it. We are entering another era where we are going to see some ridiculous offensive production.

      Adjusting for era makes sense given how much the game has changed. The size of the league, the rise of technology, the legit increased size of goaltending equipment, the influx of international players, CBA, salary cap and rule changes leading to fewer dynastic teams, there’s a reason the league went from 8gpg to half that in a decade from the late 80’s to the 90’s. Whats funny though is all of those players you mentioned, still have the all time best seasons with era adjusted lol
