The reception this game has gotten has made me realize me how completely unknown Spanish culture is worldwide. This whole game is not based on Catholicism in general, but on the traditions of the Holy Week, and the Holy Week of Seville in particular, since that's where the developers are from.
For a whole week every year, the entire city gets paralyzed while tens of thousands of people (nazarenos) with "pointy hats" (capirotes) take over the streets, escorting images of Christ and the virgin Mary on exhausting processions intended as penitence, carrying 5+ feet long candles, staves or crosses, some barefooted. It is inescapable, and everyone grows up seeing the imagery that's represented here. Some people love it, some take the days off and go to the beach, and there's also the ones who grow bitter hating it and end up making things like this game, depicting it at its most grotesque while keeping the details just different enough to avoid being sued by the churches (this happened in the early 2000s when an edgy local band included a flash game in one of their CDs that had you shoot zombified versions of various religious brotherhoods).
Having this meta knowledge about the game, you realize how pointless trying to analyze the lore is, because the whole thing is just a an excuse to have a mishmash of local references. To name a few:
    - The lady of the charred visage is this woman retenidoseneltiempo.blogspot.com/2010/08/dona-maria-coronel.html , whose remains are kept in a convent in a central Sevillian street bearing her name, that is open to the public once a year. She burned her own face with oil to stop the king from chasing her after being responsible for her husband's death, or so the story goes.
    - Eldest brother (hermano mayor), is simply the title given to the person who leads one of the brotherhoods, and this guy 3.bp.blogspot.com/-ihgvgQQ5ruw/UvnSJpT326I/AAAAAAAADd8/xHkTap7qOEo/s1600/Eduardo+del+Rey.JPG is the real eldest brother of the Brotherhood of Silence that the protagonist belongs to (Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow in the game). The eldest brother seems to be the first boss, called warden of the silent sorrow.
    - Penitents in real life are forbidden from speaking or wearing anything that could be used to identify them, which is why the protagonist doesn't speak either.
    - The woman who gives health extensions is la virgen de los dolores, a representation of Mary suffering her seven sorrows as swords piercing her heart: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/17/Salamanca_-_Iglesia_de_la_Vera_Cruz_12.jpg
    - The enemy called Amargura is simply the real life 'paso' belonging to the brotherhood of La Amargura, but instead of having Christ in chains, there's a single hand holding a chain: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a1/SemanaSantaSevillaAmargura1.jpeg/1024px-SemanaSantaSevillaAmargura1.jpeg
    - At some point in the game there are women wearing black mantillas over peinetas, another holy week tradition i.pinimg.com/originals/81/cc/b3/81ccb311c35403369671cf660331eccb.jpg
The whole thing is like this, which is why finding the references and the real life lore associated to them is more interesting than piecing together some made up plot.

I have not played a Dark Souls game for more than a few hours, but let me try... ok so basically a long long long long time ago dragons ruled the world, but then somehow a couple gods came and harnessed the power of fire. The gods were known as Skellyboi,Demonchick, Gwyn, and Lil P, Skellyboi unleashed various forms of death on the dragons, Demonchick made monster chicks, Gwyn had the power of friendship by his side, and Lil P made humanity. So after killing stuff and bringing about a new age of prosperity for the gods with the help of the great flame, the flame started to wither, and with that.. would come the age of man and the gods would be rendered... powerless. Gwyn saw this and sacrificed himself to the flame so everyone could still be immortal... the bad thing is that didn't mean your body was.. so everyone became zombies

if only people understood the difference between an subjective experience and an objective criticism.
that fight isn't the best, but it's far more functional and fun then this person gave it credit for. not doubting their experience but i've fought this boss 4 (ish) times and the only time i approached it like him was when i was clearly over leveled. it's a good boss, it has a one shot move, bullet hell patterns, a pretty generious sweet spot and multiple good options for strategy.
if you leave this fight till later in the game, it's very monotonous because you can just spam attacks and have enough health to tank hits. but if you hit the sweet spot, you've got a good fight. like any other really. it's definitely not trash.. no bosses in this game are objectively bad. either by design or programing.

Good review, you mention some important details, the ledge grabbing and moving platforms are very finicky, you have to jump well over them to not fall through. The exposito boss is pretty bad design also true, visually he's one of the best. I spammed charge attacks on the tail to get my no heal kill. The slowdown pace thing didn't bother me that much in most places but the crying mountains did bother me tho. Also the Smurfs getting stuck in the spikes bothered me. Great game despite these few issues, very recommend it.

In a recent(and objectively massive) update, they fixed the issue of annoying, pixel-perfect platforming by adding a few ghost frames for your jump. For anyone who doesn't know, it's a thing that a lot of platformers use to make platforming feel more natural by letting you jump a few frames after you leave a platform.

I agree with a lot of your arguments in your video. I love this game because of how solid it is. I feel like the obtuse story isn't a big deal personnaly since it incourages people to dig dipper but the kickstarter campaign kinda ruins this argument. A lot of lore tid-bits where given during it throught art drawn for it and with the comic that can be bought. But I feel like even throught all that it's still an awesome game with is indicative of it's quality. Thank you for giving this game a fair review without just stopping at surface level stuff.

I quite like this game. My least favorite part is the instakill spikes though. What on earth would have been lost of they had it so that landing in a spike pit deals heavy damage and teleports you to the last "safe" land you were on? Instead, it just artificially drew out some of the difficult platforming by sending me back to the altar thing every time I made a single mistake (and several times where it felt like the game was thr one messing up). If you're going to have difficult precision platforming in a metroidvania, the last thing you want is for your player to instantly die the moment they fail, unless literally everything in the game one-shots the player (which would be frustrating in its own right, but at least then it would be consistent with the rest of the game's challenge).

Had they dropped some names like God or Jesus Christ then we’d probably have a different situation on our hands.

Thanks so much for this and I hope you keep making videos. That being said, please also work in post editing videos, and if you haven’t already, make a script. As a Christian myself, I absolutely adore mythologized versions of Christianity in games. It makes it so much more personal to see the thing that's defined my moral life turned into something different, usually corrupted or far more mystical. The Castlevania anime's focus on the darker aspects of the church, all of Blasphemous' world, Columbia's religiously feverish cult that combines Protestant faith with extreme American patriotism integrated into it, Agony's incredibly creative and haunting depiction of hell, the worshippers of the Light in Darkest Dungeon, just to name a few. And to be honest, I can't fully explain why I love it so much. It's just fascinating to see.

Dialogue-heavy and verbose, the game has the player working for the church - rooting out assumed evils, torturing folks, obeying the letter of the law, and so forth.
Unfortunately, the actual gameplay of Inqusitor is...bad. Dull. Tedious. Imagine a game that emulated Diablo 1, but enemies have triple the health and are dimmer.

What does VAG mean in this context? I tried looking it up online and... well if you google it it's R18, so I can't connect the dots.

I absolutely love your reviews and think you deserve so many subs, but its "vague" not "vagg"... Sorry your content is so good it's pure nitpicking at this point.

The way he says vague and plague gets me XD I think it's the same way people who read it quite a few times before they heard it out loud say it. Please say bagel in another video, i wanna hear if you say it like Dan harmon :D

I’m a sucker for cryptic backstories, and dark souls quenches that thirst better than any other genre I’ve found. That being said, blasphemous really was missing that backstory part. I don’t mind it being hidden, but you should be able to find an answer if you look for it. Like, you should know the weight of the world and monsters you fight.

The difficulty in this game is very off-putting to me. Not that I believe that a challenging game is not fun. I beat souls and sekiro alike. I love nioh. But in this metroidvania feels off-putting as hell. Like it's somewhat out of place and not at all fitting for the enemies range and damage. I wish this was more like SotN or at least a rogue like game. then I wouldn't be bothered. But the backtracking after the deaths doesn't make me feel like I'm getting gud. And platforming and endless pits are horribly balanced. A shame, the artstyle and world is so unique. I don't have time to redo sections over and over again because someone as a interstellar range and I was thrown at a bottomless pit.

A game comes really to life with a good soundtrack and Blasphemous has a fantastic soundtrack.

I agree with most of what you said. I also disliked the no running when slashing. Reminds me of some old school nes games that makes it harder for the player for no reason.
