Even as a child actor, Joaquin Phoenix was pretty impressive.
I practically went into shock years later when I found out that was Joaquin Phoenix lol.
Yea, i recoqnized him now, very charismatic.
Gotta learn how to fake it with that upbringing.
oh damnnnn i never realized it was him lol
His brother, River was gonna be a legend.
The line..."My whole life is HAVE TO!" still cuts me deep.
That's every man.
🍻
... and why I knew I could never handle having kids.
I was going to post this. As a father of four, I know all too well how that feels.
I'm right there with you bud. That stark realization changes one's whole entire life.
I'm glad you enjoyed the movie and thank you for the kind words about me, and the tasteful censoring of my 3 year old bits, lol. Hope you're doing well! This movie was such an amazing experience to make and I love that even now, nearly 35 years later, it's still remembered so fondly and still being discovered.
My younger brother absolutely modeled himself as your portrayal of Justin. He always wanted to fast forward to the Justin parts when we were kids. Well done!
@@richardrawson Just tell your little brother to be careful around lawnchairs, lol.
You really feel for many of the characters, especially Cool, who was abandoned by both of his parents, and left to be raised by his grandparents.
On the upside, the ending suggests he will be surrounded by a big, loving family. He will be given more love and stability than he would with either parent. ❤
It’s the best thing ever for him, actually.
The brother was inspired by Ron Howard's brother Clint who was having a lot of problems at the time and was leaning on the family for help.
@@Lethgar_Smith also interesting that Clint played the annoying little league dad
I agree with everyone here. I'll guarantee that Cool went on to have a wonderful life surrounded by a family who loved and supported him instead of two irresponsible idiots who treated him like an inconvenient consequence of their "passion".
Ugh...
I L❤️VE Tom Hulce.
I HATED him in "Parenthood".
So...
Good job Tom! 🤣
Mary Steenburgen played a leading role in a wonderful old film called Time After Time (1979), in which she plays a modern bank teller who helps H.G. Wells navigate the modern world, where he has come tracking his friend, who turns out to be Jack the Ripper. It is a surprising romantic comedy along with the drama. A very very sweet movie that you will enjoy a lot.
She and Malcolm MacDowell fell in love making that movie, and the chemistry comes through on screen. Plus David Warner is a heck of a villain.
The other time travel movie she was in was Back To The Future 3
Time After Time is an excellent romantic thriller. Fun stuff connecting HG Wells to Jack the Ripper. Highly recommended. Not horror, but it fits for Halloween season.
Great Movie. David Warner!
Awesome film, especially as a fan of Wells’ works. David Warner killed it in that film
One of my favorite flicks ever. "It's not like that all ends when you're 18 or 21 or 41 or 61. It never, ever ends. What a great quote. Along with, "You need a license to buy a dog, or drive a car. Hell, you need a license to catch a fish! But they'll let any butt-reaming asshole be a father."
I’m pretty sure parent license requirements wouldn’t really fly as a proposal, but sometimes it doesn’t seem like such a bad idea.
That about sums it up. Too bad parenting classes aren't mandatory, though.
Parenting (besides living, itself) is the be-all and end-all of "learn by doing". 🥺
Wouldn't you say? 😊
P.S. Perhaps, one day, "spiked the ball" will refer to a parent who has lost a child... 🤔 😕
I quote those two lines to this day :)
..and Mother!
Grandma's rollercoaster story gets me every time.
Same!
Exasperated Steve Martin, neurotic Rick Moranis, the ever wonderful Dianne Wiest, and early appearances from a lot of young faces - Keanu included. What's not to enjoy about Parenthood?
You left out Acadamy Award winner Joaquin Phoenix who played Gary.
@@danielberg7644 He's included in 'a lot of young faces' with Martha Plimpton...
@@danielberg7644 One of the best actors working today. Joker, Gladiator, Walk the Line, the upcoming Napoleon, his filmography is so great.
And Amadeus - I mean Tom Hulce.
66th like. Kneel before Zod
(I mean, as you can see, Zod is merely 1/10th as powerful as Satan:)
The moment where Todd talks about his father and how he helps Gary is so well written and acted. Such a great flick!
That's one of my favorite moments too. Up until that moment Todd seemed to be just an immature and irresponsible teenaged jerk and then suddenly, with that one line, you realize that you judge him too harshly and he's a kid trying to make his way through life without a father to teach him anything.
@@charlize1253That exactly like Keanu life growing up
Keanu Reeves & Joaquin Phoenix with their little brother-in-laws bromance was something to see considering how far they’ve come in their careers the last 35 years.
They’ve always been the highlight of the movie for me
They knew eachother irl right? Through River?
@@monalisasmile6629 Probably.
@@monalisasmile6629Keanu knows his whole family, Rivers was his best friend
As a kid I thought this was just a fun comedy, but man, it hits SO much harder now that I've got a family of my own.
Fun fact: Even though Steve Martin was famous for being a dad in movies like this, Father of the Bride and Cheaper By The Dozen, he didn't actually become a father until 2012 when he was 67 years old.
Woah i didn't know that, that's crazy
Well, bless my (male) menopause! 😃
I don't have kids but I agree with you. Watching this as a kid it's a comedy but watching it as an adult it's a heartwarming family drama.
That is surprising, he is like the ultimate Dad in movies. I'm a huge fan of his and realize I know nothing about his personal life, who he's married to...and I'll keep it that way. No need to know.
I wasn’t able to fully appreciate this movie until I became a parent. Then it hit on a whole other level. It’s a funny movie but doesn’t flinch at showing you the difficult moments in parenting, of which there are many. A really underrated film, I’m glad you liked it Cassie.
Hence the title? (I saw it as a kid too...and YES)
23:30 - Steve Martin as a cowboy is your sign to definitely watch The Three Amigos! (1986).
Grandma's story about the merry-go-round and roller coaster reminds me of someone who used to ride the merry-go-round of rom-coms.
Then one day she decided to ride the roller coaster of action, adventure, fantasy, historical, horror, sci-fi, thrillers, and even westerns.
Cassie, "You've come far, pilgrim."
"Yes if she's so smart how come she's sitting in the neighbors' car". Might be my favorite line in the film, that and "you worry too much, you always did".
Gary’s childhood is what I’d expect from the Joker.
This movie has so many good lines. I love how the mom bonded with Todd.
River Phoenix was going out with Martha Plimpton at the time and was good friend was Keanu Reeves. So he would often drop off and pick up his brother Joaquin, Martha, and Keanu from the movie set.
FUN FACT: Cool is played by Alex Burrall, who's also known for portraying a young Michael Jackson (in the early stages of the Jackson Five) in the mini-series "The Jacksons: An American Dream".
Brilliant movie. Underrated gem. I remember seeing this in the theater with my Mom when it came out. Is still a great movie. BTW, Gary was played by a young Joaquin Phoenix.
Back when he went by Leaf Phoenix. Us '80s kids remember him being in a bunch of stuff as a child actor, to see him go from movies like this to stuff like Joker has been quite a trip.
Yes, indeed. Very true. He’s a natural. So was his brother. RIP.
This movie is special to me. It was partially filmed in my hometown, where the Phoenix family also lived. My sister was a friend of the family, and got to play an extra in this movie. Many years later I also got the opportunity to work with Joaquin.
I hope he is doing well.
Cool, which scene did your sister take part in?
@@poppletop8331 The graduation/daydream scene.
For those chatting about the location, Julie is picked up by the Kirkwood Police. Kirkwood is an actual suburb of St. Louis, which explains the Cardinals game at the opening.
I was 22 when this came out. It had some moments to be sure. But now, at age 56..I understand it completely. And it's so precious. There is no teacher greater than life itself. Just pay attention when it's teaching you.
58 here...totally agree.
Gary's sister btw ... Martha Plimpton. When she was younger she was Stef in "The Goonies". Most recently I remember her on the series "Raising Hope" (she was hilarious) and several appearances on "Younger".
This is a terrific movie that gets overlooked for whatever reason. I think it’s touching, funny, and real.
Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel were maybe the best mainstream comedy writers of the '80s and early '90s (see also: "Night Shift," "Splash," "Gung Ho," "City Slickers," "Mr. Saturday Night," "A League of Their Own," etc.)
When this movie came out, I was a young mother with 3 kids about the same ages as Gil's. We coached out son's baseball team, and I recall many hours searching through the trash at Mr. Ghatti's Pizza for my son's lost retainer. The orthodontist finally made him one that glowed in the dark! So helpful. This movie is SO relatable.
The girl Keanu was dating is Martha Plimpton. Most people recognize her from Goonies. She is the daughter of actors Keith Carradine and Shelly Plimpton. She also starred in Beautiful Girls and The Mosquito Coast.
And Cassie was right. She was in The Good Wife too.
Steve Martin did balloon animals in his stand up act originally so he was already good at it. Jason Robards(the grandad) was a grouch in this movie but only as the character. One of my favorite movies along with Parenthood is one called Max Dugan Returns, with Robards, a young Matthew Broderick, Marsha Mason, and Donald Sutherland. Silmilar light hearted family situations.
Steve Martin worked at Disney-something, selling lots of souvenir shit, and one of the things he got really good at was balloon animals. He did them in his early standup days in the 70s.
He worked at Disneyland as a teenager, in a magician’s shop!
The little kid in “Parenthood” with anger issues was Joaquin Phoenix! Big cast!!
With such a talented cast, it’d be hard to screw up this movie. I love that they crammed in so many special, heartfelt moments, drama, and fun into one film without it feeling rushed or like an incomplete story. This is something you can watch over & over and still enjoy every time.
One sign of a great movie is if, after nearly two hours, you don't yet want to leave the people in it. Another such, I find, is Woody Allen's *Radio Days,* from two years prior to *Parenthood.* Woody tends to keep his movies tight (about 90 minutes, average, like that one is), but I say he could, very easily, have stretched it by _at least_ another half hour. 😎
It’s hard for me to imagine you with anxiety or being a mom. You always present such happiness and confidence. I don’t say this often, but you impress me, Cassie. Keep doing you.
The kid who played Gary is a phenomenal actor. I see big things for him!
I knew as soon as you said you were watching this that you’d love it, it’s a classic movie
I think the Larry not stepping up storyline was vital for the overall story to let you know that you can do everything for your child to help but at the end of the day it's up to them to do the right thing and you can't force them , all Frank could do was support him and make sure Cool gets a normal childhood with family members who love him
The nasty parent at the baseball game was Clint Howard - Ron's brother - he was child star too and often pops up in Ron Howard movies - he was one of the ground control crew in Apollo 13
OMG! Childhood memories unlocked 😊 I watched this movie SO many times back in the day. We must’ve had the VHS or something.
I did too but watching this I realized I remembered absolutely nothing about it. Except the dream sequences and the drag car scene.
One of my all-time favorite movies. I also like the fact that, unlike most movies, there is no "resolution" at the end. Everything continues on, and we write the script as we go.
Cassie, you make watching old movies that I've seen lots of times so much more enjoyable. Thank you for your heartwarming reactions, tears and all. You always manage to touch my heart and usually make me cry too (and I'm a grown man). God bless you.
One of my all time favorite movies, Goin’ South 1978 - Jack Nicholson, Mary Steenburgen, John Belushi, Danny DeVito, Christopher Lloyd. Western comedy.
"If I pace myself, I can do this all day" yes, an excellent film.
I saw this with my wife a year after we got married and we loved it. Little did we know we would be living through much of it after we had our two kids. Now they are grown, 25 and 31, and the parenting will continue on until we are gone. Hopefully we did a good enough job that they will be able to stand on their own and survive in this hard world.
During the baseball game where Kevin misses the last hit, the guy in the stands that starts screaming is Clint Howard - Ron Howard's brother. He often plays cameos and bit parts in everything Ron has anything to do with (he played Leon, a little kid who never said anything, just standing around in the background, usually dressed as a cowboy in a few episodes of The Andy Griffith Show). He's the only actor to have appeared in every Star Trek series AND even a couple of Star Wars related movies/series.
During Steve Martins vision of the future where Kevin goes on a shooting spree, Rance Howard plays the Dean of the college. Rance is Ron and Clint's father. Andy Griffith based a lot of Sheriff Andy Taylor's mannerisms on Rance - he used to visit their house for dinner to get a feel for the right family vibe.
Ron Howard's daughter, Bryce Dallas Howard (Claire in the Jurassic World movies), can be seen as a little girl, in the baseball bleachers with her uncle Clint.
When both Joaquin and Bryce Dallas get older, they play characters in love in the movie The Village. That movie is worth a review.
@@conureron3792the Village was the biggest disappointment ever
The premise of the movie was really cool
The twist cheapened and ruined it
At the 11 minute mark there's a little Easter egg for anyone quick enough to spot it. The school is Gerald Paris Elementary, named for actor turned director Jerry Paris who directed 237 of 255 episodes of "Happy Days", starring Ron Howard. The college dean is played by Rance Howard, Ron's father. And, actually, Steve Martin knows very well how to make balloon animals as he used to do it in his stand-up.
I hope that you enjoy this movie, Cassie. I love how it depicts various family members in an ensemble drama, and their respective highs and lows.
I was happily at the premiere of this film in Orlando (it was filmed in the town north of us in Winter Park) and met River Phoenix and his brother Joaquin who played Gary, then called Leaf Phoenix, who were both very sincerely nice people. Absolutely beautiful reaction.
Yeah I just heard this was filmed in Orlando. Wouldn't have guessed that.
This movie is one of my guilty pleasures. It always touches me. Great performances...Jason Robards is just fantastic, and watching a very young Keanu Reeves and Tom Hulce is great. Love all the family dynamics.
No need to be guilty!
@@curtismartin2866 Curtis, I LOVED you when you played for the Pats. Nice to have you in the HOF. LOL!
Thank you for this! The featurette will tell you that the vignettes came from the real lives of the writers (Ron Howard, Babaloo Mandel, and Lowell Ganz, who also plays the usher in the beginning). So it plays very real and funny, and, your commentators are right, a perfect cast! Most all the characters are great-it does make you want to jump into the movie and hang out with these people. Finally, the 80's was a simpler time, which also makes you nostalgic.
When I saw this come up, I knew there wasn’t even a possibility that you wouldn’t love this movie. It’s certainly one of my enduring favorites, too. Now you have experienced the legend that is Cowboy Gil.
I graduated HS in 89, and saw this movie then or within a few years of it's release, and I thought it was good with my limited life experience. But that's what made it so great at the time, as it had so many characters, there was no way you couldn't identify with someone in the story. Now I'm 52, and have lived, loved, laughed, parented, and a bit of everything inbetween, and the Grandmothers story of the rollercoaster is still tops. As that's life in a nutshell, as no matter how well you plan, or how perfect you want things to be, the best you can ever really do is enjoy the ride. I don't know of anyone who has ever seen this movie and didn't love it, but it's for sure a hidden gem, as I rarely see it spoken of in general, but amazing all the same.
This remains one of my favorite movies of all time. I loved watching your reaction. Every character is so well done. Funny story: So . . . about sixteen years after this movie I was the publicity director for a mystery writers group called Sisters in Crime. There was a book festival on the UCLA campus, and Harley Jane Kozak (Rick Moranis's wife) had become a mystery author. While I was running the booth, she arrived to sign books. Rarely star-struck, I introduced myself and told her I loved her character in Parenthood, and that it was my favorite movie. Over the next hour (in between signing books for fans) we talked about the movie and ultimately read lines back and forth by memory from the script. It was surreal to recite a line and have Harley respond with HER line from that particular scene in the movie. It was an amazing day. A memory I will cherish forever.
Oh, you LUCKY!! 😤 (I have often wondered what she went on to. ☺️)
I always wish she had become a bigger star. She was lovely.
Way way back when Joquain was known as "Leif"... i really enjoyed him in "Space Camp" definitely one of those feel good dream fulfillment kids flicks with a great cast... And a wonderful understated score from the maestro John Williams.
Jinx put Max in space! Shot in my hometown at the original Space Camp.
I loved Space Camp very underrated movie.
Great heartfelt reaction.
Cameos: Clint Howard, Ron’s brother as the annoying baseball dad. Rance Howrd, Ron’s Father as the college dean.
As a child/teen actress Martha Plimpton is known for The Goonies but she also starred in a wonderful but underrated film Running On Empty with Joaquin’s brother River Phoenix (RIP).
Another great cameo - co-writer Lowell Ganz as Stan, the "amalgam" usher.
And it all starts again for each couple , even the grandparents ❤😊
That diarrhea song was marketing GOLD. So many parents saw this movie because one kid would get a whole class or Little League team singing it, and naturally they were curious. Cha-ching😂$$$
@@Goofyguy4ever"When the moon hits your eye.... diarrhea!!"

“Ode to my father”
it has every element to be a good movie… you won’t be disappointed!😊
The feels - big time. Lowell Ganz, Babaloo Mandel, and Ron Howard are a powerhouse trio. Prior to this film they did Night Shift, Splash, and Gung Ho together. And they are all on my list of favorite movies. But there is something about Parenthood that pushed Ron to another level as a director IMO. No spectacle - just character and it really pulls you in. Lowell and Babaloo also wrote some other amazing films (A League of their Own, City Slickers) and Ron has directed other great films (Brackdraft, Cocoon, Apollo 13, Ransom). But their work together has always been my favorite. There's just something about the three of them together.
After watching Keanu in this and the Bill & Ted's movies, we all knew it was a matter of time before he became one of the most hardcore assassins in movie history. JUST KIDDING 😂😂😂
He spent the 90's doing action in between more serious projects like Much Ado About Nothing and My Own Private Idaho, so an enduring series of dramatic action was kinda inevitable.
In the mid-90's, the prime-time animated show *The Critic* at one point showed title character Jay Sherman (voiced by Jon Lovitz), despondent over the substandard quality of contemporary films, eagerly attending a screening of a new cinematic *The Merchant of Venice* ... to find it starred Keanu Reeves.
"Hath not a dude eyes? If you prick us, do we not get bummed? If you poison us, do we not blow chunks?"

Oh! This is a perfect pairing, you and this movie. It is one of the sweetest movies and also one of the best movies.I've always felt like it doesn't get nearly the amount of praise that it deserves. And what an incredible cast!
I love the part where Keanu has the wildly profound moment regarding letting anybody be a father, which is completely uncharacteristic of his childish behavior, and he suddenly shakes his head like he's snapping out of some unpleasant moment of clarity.
It’s been a mission of mine to make a shirt with Helen’s smiling face with the quote “Hi, Gary!”.
Remember that Parenthood the series is the 2nd version of the film as a TV series. There was one in the 1990s with Jason Bateman as the dad, young Leo DiCaprio as one of the kids, and Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Avengers) on the writing staff.
If you want to see Dianne Wiest as something other than "the mom in everything", try "Hannah and Her Sisters" (1987) or her Oscar-winner "Bullets over Broadway".
And of course, Mary Steenburgen won HER Oscar for "Melvin and Howard" (1981).
I think Cassie would love Hannah & Her Sisters.
@@sanzoftatooine incredible movie. Hannah and Her Sisters and Crimes and Misdemeanors are Woody at his peak.
With respect, I submit that Ed Begley Jr. essayed the Steve Martin role for the first TV incarnation. (Not a bad choice, either.) 🙃

It's lots of fun for us older people to see a younger generation finding and enjoying the movies we loved back in the day. Great reaction and thanks for posting.
Wow! Can't believe you reacted to the only movie I was ever in. This film was shot in my old stomping grounds and I skipped school to be there for the filming at Delaney Park (the baseball field) in Orlando. SO many of the shots of that neighborhood bring back memories. Ron Howard shot almost all of it in actual houses from there (not in a studio in LA) and all around the Orlando area.
I lived across the street from there for a while and grew up about a 1/2 mile from there. Such a great neighborhood to grow up in.
My friend and I were selected to be in the cheering section at the field. Too cool! Also, a great "real" family movie, worts and all. Not just a pure family film but rather one that tackles tough issues and doesn't shy away from the messiness of families. Love it and your reaction.
most relatable movie ever......... no hollywood BS..... just real life in your face ups and downs of life struggles and family relationships.
This movie has such good characters and actors and the storylines do a fantastic job of showing how all families have their dysfunctions but they all still find their way and their love together❤ One of my favorites!
"Mozart is a really crappy dad. Poor Cool!"
- my daughter (She apparently watched Mozart at a friend's house)
Finally! I've been requesting this movie to multiple reaction channels for the last 2 years and no one has done it. It's a great comedy with an all star cast.
This is a great movie. You should watch "My Blue Heaven" with Steve Martin and Rick Moranis
Which is an unofficial (OK, very unofficial) sequel to Goodfellas. While it was based on Henry Hill's writing, Henry hated it. But it is enjoyable.
The bad little league Dad was Ron Howard's brother Clint. And his Dad Rance was at the scene of Gil's imaginary sniper shooting.
I loved this movie a lot when I was a kid, but appreciate it so much more as an adult. Great cast!
Yep! It’s funny, relatable, touching, and then relatable again.
This is a perfect movie in my mind. Funny, poignant, real, great acting by best actors, heartwarming. And Ron Howard put it all together.
The rollercoaster was the perfect metaphor for parenthood!
This marks the first time in years that I've seen this film. Loved your reaction, Cassie!
And I'm not surprised that this Ron Howard flick made you feel all the emotions. It's that kind of movie, and you're that kind of person -- sensitive and thoughtful.
Cassie hasn't seen The Exorcist?! Classic horror film that defined a generation of horror films. Definitely gotta put it on the list for Halloween!
Definitely not a "scary but not too scary" movie, though.
The delightful Ms. Popcorn has declared that she absolutely will not watch this. I believe Cassie is LDS and, as such, takes things like Demon Possession seriously. I grew up Fundamentalist Christian and of course was never allowed to watch something so "satanic". Here's the thing - when I finally watched it a couple of years ago, I discovered that the film takes religion seriously. I had always assumed that it would mock religion but it absolutely doesn't. So if she is somehow reading this, Cassie please get Carly for moral support, turn the lights on and watch The Exorcist. Yes, a couple scenes are vile, but then so is the evil one and the movie wouldn't work if they soft pedaled evil.
@@curtismartin2866 Good observation. William Peter Blatty, author of The Exorcist, was a devout Catholic. I don't know whether he categorically believed in possession, but he absolutely took religion and matters of faith seriously. (Having said that, I think I agree that the film is probably a *bit* too much for Cassie.)
@@Johnny_Socko I think Cassie has grown a lot. I'm not saying The Exorcist is a silly little Popcorn movie, or that Cassie should watch it alone in a dark room. But I do hope that if she is concerned that the movie mocks faith, that she can at least cross that reason off her list.
If the sadists in her Patreon manage to get her to watch Rosemary's Baby I will be super-pissed. At least the good guys win in The Exorcist.
This is an amazing movie with a very talented cast. A reminder to everyone that family is truly all that matters in the world!
Totally. I can’t stop thinking about those babies in this huge family who are all going to be cousins around the same age. And the loving older cousins who are going to be looking after them.
Fun Fact: The actor playing young Gary is non other than River Phoenix who later went on to become a lawyer. He tried to break up a fight in a fastfood restaurant, one of the men had a knife. He was stabbed in the throat and died instantly.
Nice! Nice try. 😒 😁
I remember seeing this in the theater with my family when it came out. I was on ten years old. But it still struck a cord. The similarity with my family and other families that I knew. My family has always had my back, and I will always have their back. Being in a great family, this movie hits you hard in your heart
Another perfect movie for Cassie. Without even watching I know she will absolutely love this one.
This movie is definitely connected to the TV series. It was executive-produced by the same people - Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. It's not a one-to-one correlation but many of the characters are analogous. For example: Gil/Karen are like Adam/Kristina. He's a mid-level guy at a big company and the responsible and reliable big brother. Gil's son Kevin has an emotional disorder while Adam's son Max had autism. Larry is the wild kid who suddenly finds out he's a father of a bi-racial son, The same thing happens to Dax Shepard's Crosby on the show. Like Helen, Lauren Graham is the single mom with a rebellious teenager and a lonesome son. Julia and Joel were the overachieving couple like Harley Kozack and Rick Moranis., etc.
It's one of my favourite movies, touching, funny, raunchy, wacky and suspenseful all at the same time. It hasn't aged at all.
This is such a GREAT movie. I watched it as a kid and loved it but watching it now as a parent is so different. I watched it with my son when he was about 8 and somewhere in the middle of the movie he just suddenly says “I never want kids.” I asked him why and he said “cause you have to take care of them and stuff.”
Cassie, your reaction to seeing Ron Howard's name is great! Like spotting a long-lost friend in a crowd!
"He always directs the heartwarming ones".
Exactly!
What makes this channel so much fun is the way you can quickly find the film's emotional path, its tone and its values is what makes you a great viewer of films.
Confession: I first saw Parenthood when I was in my late teens and I thought it was soppy, but as I've grown up I realise more and more how wrong I was.
This movie clicks on so many levels.
1989 was such a great year for films: when Harry met Sally..., Dead Poets Society, Field of Dreams, The Fabulous Baker Boys, The Abyss, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Born on the Fourth of July, Glory, Do the Right Thing, sex lies and videotape, Crimes and Misdemeanors ...and a little Irish movie called My Left Foot!
This is pretty much one of the most wholesome family movies ever made. It's an ensemble piece that comes together beautifully. That is very hard to do and I wish we had more of them.
Love this movie as an 80s kid! I actually named my oldest daughter Taylor because i loved that name of his daughter in this movie.
Deep Cut Cass - one of Ron Howard's finest films with such a great ensemble and a well-executed turn by Steve Martin. Jason Robards who plays his dad was an esteemed theatrically trained actor and always gave a gruff yet amiable presence (he's the lead attorney of Tom Hanks' law firm in PHILADELPHIA and won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN - which you so need to see).
This is such a fantastic movie on so many levels. It is one of my favorites. So many ups and downs but it leaves you feeling so good.
I love the family drama or romcom on a Sunday afternoon reaction!! 👏👏
I also have a suggestion… Running on empty… An oldie with River Phoenix in what I think is one of his best performances. It also stars Martha Plimpton who played Keanu Reeves wife in this one.
Julie is played by Martha Plimpton. She was also in the Goonies, but most people know here now from Raising Hope.
One of my favorite Steve Martin movies. He's really good, but also can get a bit much when he's let loose on his own.
He needs a great cast around him to match him. Here he's surrounded by a vast number of great actors from every generation, and in Three Amigos he acted with two other comedians who are too much if not held in check. They worked perfectly together there.
The best thing about this movie is that there were so many family problems going on that EVERYBODY could relate to SOMETHING that was going on.
Always loved this movie but seeing it now at a much older age it hits so much deeper.
I always enjoyed this movie. Grandma’s roller coaster story is the perfect metaphor about life and family.
I used to work in child care, and the guy who played Kevin (Jasen Fisher) was one of our kids' dads. Very low-key but nice dude.
Delighted to hear it! 🙃🙂
FINALLY!!! Been waiting for you to see this one! My prediction: you will absolutely fall in love with this gem of a film 😇
For more of Martha Plimpton in an ensemble comedy with a great cast - the practically unheard of New Year's movie 200 Cigarettes
Also the movie running on empty I'm pretty sure with River Phenix
I grew up watching this alot. It was exactly parenting as well as growing up in the 80s n 90s.... Amazing reaction to a great movie 💯
Same! My siblings and I watched it so much we use to quote the lines 😂😂
It's one of my top 10 favourite movies. It doesn't matter what walk of life you are from there's something you can connect with.
It also has one of my favourite movie jokes.
"I can't be a grandmother! I was at Woodstock Christ sake!"
"I went to Woodstock.."
"Really?.. I thought you looked familiar..."
"Keanu Reeves has range" is something I never thought I would hear someone say.
Try watching The Gift (2001)and The Watcher, you will be surprise of his range
@@user-vb5tq2kv1q I am not saying that was necessarily my view, but many people through out the majority of his career believed he was a terrible actor. I even remember a cartoon teasing his Shakespeare film with him saying his lines like he was in Bill and Ted. He didn't really become popular until the John Wick series (and people on the internet revealing what a nice guy he apparently was). Yes he did Matrix before that, but people loved that because of the story, action and special effects. Not because of him.
I watched this, and teared up. I always find myself being taken in by this intensely wonderful film.
This movie holds a real special place in my heart. I truly adore all of the actors, all the story lines and it reminds me of my parents. ❤
Parenthood the TV show was inspired by this movie. You can definitely tell with some of the characters. They started there, but then the show did its own thing, which I appreciate. This is one of my favorite movies!
