Everything about this Polish version is really cool.. The animated version doesn't have the same mysticism or magic like this does.. I loved this as a child..
@SupernalOne It's based on Tove Janson's original story, yes. On the page where the squirrel's death is described, it also says that if you find this too depressing, you should skip to a page further on in the book. It turns out that the squirrel is alive again in the spring, and he doesn't remember anything of his death.
I read that the squirrel wasn't identified and that the author doesn't clarify if this is the same squirrel back from the dead or a different squirrel.
Nice of Tove to warn about that, but it’s important to let children know what death is and that it’s unavoidable. If you don’t teach that while their young then they might be ignorant like the squirrel and not rush inside when it’s cold out (seriously, more toddlers than you would think wander outside in winter)
@@kyzendelaguia1063you should teach and encourage children to be careful and to look after themselves, yes. But there is absolutely no need to traumatize them in the process or “teach them that death is unnavoidable” since that kind of “knowledge” isn’t going to provide anything helpful or beneficial to their life. Let them live instead of reminding them they will die one day
In the original story it's Moomintroll, not Little My, who wants to give the Squirrel a funeral. Instead, Little My wants to make the squirrel's tail into a muff (i.e. a furry hand warmer!)
Fantastic. This is so hauting and beautiful. I think this animation is much closer to the spirit of the books than the Japanese version (the alternative "Lady of the Cold is horrible - like some alien!). The narration is a bit clumsy but the imagery and music are really fantastic! Of course, the original book is even better!
I remember watching this episode as a little boy in the eighties ,and I think it was on a dark winter afternoon after school . I like their cosey of their home vs outside .
Actually, this is highly accurate, except on two crucial points. First an formost, as mentioned below, Too-Tikki is not a he but a she, and secondly, Little My was not in favour of the funeral, she wanted to cut of Squirrel's tail and use it to warm her hands. Moomin IS brutal. And terribly beautiful.
Too ticky is actually a nonbinary legend! He was based off of Tove Jansen's nonbinary partner and in different translations, her pronouns vary wildly :)
@@dalekbeifong Where on earth did you dig that info from? Cause this is the first time I've ever heard or seen anyone claim Tuulikki Pietilä would have been an NB.
Homosexuality was a taboo in those days children could confuse and ask: if is a she why looks like a he? In this part of the world was named "tomasito" literally little thomas
I loved this show so much as a kid and didn't remember at all that they'd changed her gender so I've been sitting here yelling “HE?!“ lmao. The disrespect!!
i think it was a bit harsh that the squirrel died... i only ever saw the animated version as a child and it gave me nightmares, i must say this isnt quite as scary but i can see why people who grew up with it would think it was better. she's more intimidating in the drawn one
How is it too harsh? Think of where the story is from, the snowy landscape of Finland. It’s the author telling children to get inside when it’s cold out by anthropomorphizing winter and showing what happens to those who are ignorant of her touch.
I want to question? Who had often nightmares that went on for years? My nightmares were horrifying and they kept with me for a very long time as a child, something like 6 ish years. They happened very often and I would be chased by the lady of the cold, I reached a point I could tell it was a dream every time and I let her kill me which lead to my awakening in the middle of the night
I remember haveing nightmares of the groke, or "Hufsa" as we call it in norway. I would dream that i was watching a new episode of moomin witch i had not seen before. All i remember was moomin and his friends on the ocean in the winter. Then the groke came, all i remember was that she was very "Aggressive and threatening". Other dreams would just be the groke Staring into my soul.. creepy as hell....
@sirgregh Have you ever seen an episode of the japanese animation featuring the Groke? Nothing could possibly be more terrifying/creepy/spooky than that O.o
I seem to remember that when this aired on Norwegian television, the opening and end credits theme was different. Or is there another version of Moomin animated with puppets?
and just realised Anne Wood and FilmFair involvement - the same as behind multiple children's series like the Wombles and Paddington. Central TV bought a major share of FilmFair which probably explains the appearance on CITV.
Not so much in the books. When winter is over and spring comes, Moomintroll encounters another squirrel who also called himself the same name and looked exactly the same and had just as big ego. However, he had no recollection ever meeting lady of the cold or dying and it's left unclear whether it indeed was the same squirrel or...something else.
Not bad at all, far more serious than the usual animations of this style. I at least prefer this Lady of the Cold's design to the design she was given in the cartoon animation even if I'll always prefer such a cartoon over this form of animation otherwise.
very creepy. not really suitable for children. I remember watching this as a kid and would enjoy the episodes but, back then, there wasn't a lot on tv. we only had bbc1 bbc2 and itv. When I got home from school I would watch all the kids programmes, whatever was shown. I always thought the Moomins was a bit creepy though.
Everything about this Polish version is really cool.. The animated version doesn't have the same mysticism or magic like this does.. I loved this as a child..
Old school Moomin episodes were amazing. I remember being both scared and enchanted by them back in the early 80s. Thanks for posting
My mum showed us this when we were younger and my little sister cried for hours. It still haunts me.

This episode became one of my many childhood traumas
Thank you. It frightened me soo much
Worst nightmare I ever had was after watching this as a little boy.
Bloody hell, Ingmar Bergmann for children this is! I loved this when I was a nipper, partly because it was so dark and atmospheric.

In the Polish version she's referred to as she so I guess it must've been an error in the English translation
@@dalekbeifong wait, Tuulikki was non-binary? I know they are pretty masc irl but I thought they were a girl.
Edit:typo

There is absolutely nothing beautiful about any of that and you know it 😂
Too-Ticky is a girl
And she is based on Tove's partner.
but an androgynous one
Homosexuality was a taboo in those days children could confuse and ask: if is a she why looks like a he? In this part of the world was named "tomasito" literally little thomas
and I thought that the anime was morbid :s
Try watching the 69 and 72 anime those get morbid as well
This version of the animation is so beautiful. I was haunted by this as a kid.
I remember watching this specific episode as a child bc the ice queen absolutely terrified me 💀
I used to have a dvd of all the Moomins episodes but we lost it 😔 this is the only way I can watch it now
I remember being a bit freaked by this episode, the lady of the cold demon like....
Gosh!, the characters and ambient are so creepy and the story too.
But I like it anyways.
It gives it a chilling feel witch is appealing
What sort of nightmare fuel is this??? Wtf...i am gonna have night terrors for the next two lifetimes.
The audio design in this animated series is top notch.
this one left me with ptsd for several months as a kid
🤣🤣
Beautiful...my favourite animated cartoon as a child in Ireland!
This stop motion version just has so much more character and spirit than all the other versions.
The music in this is really cool
Too Ticky is NOT a "he" as in this naration (but I guess that was safer than having kids ask why she looked like a "he").
@The Green shame, as Too-Ticky was based on the author's wife
reminds me of "they're lesbians Harold!"
I loved this show so much as a kid and didn't remember at all that they'd changed her gender so I've been sitting here yelling “HE?!“ lmao. The disrespect!!
Ah man... this brings back terrifying childhood memories
i think it was a bit harsh that the squirrel died... i only ever saw the animated version as a child and it gave me nightmares, i must say this isnt quite as scary but i can see why people who grew up with it would think it was better. she's more intimidating in the drawn one
Nah this is way scarier than the animation which isn't scary at all. Besides Tove Jansson thought this represented her books better.
How is it too harsh? Think of where the story is from, the snowy landscape of Finland. It’s the author telling children to get inside when it’s cold out by anthropomorphizing winter and showing what happens to those who are ignorant of her touch.
What a beautiful story.
This is still so spooky.
It is
The bittersweet music sounds like it belongs in one of the Phantasm movies.

I had loads of nightmares as a kid but none related to this, although it did make me very sad when I first saw it as a kid.
I remember haveing nightmares of the groke, or "Hufsa" as we call it in norway.

I love this book.
She just killed the the thing! Thank god that didn't happen to Little My in the 90's version.!
That ice spirit froze that squirrel stone dead.
Damn. That's cold.
Omgg this give me even more nostalgia then the animated japanese versiom
Makes me want to go to Finland
This episode used to scare me as a kid
Like a lot
the music at 3:38 fucks me up...
Shame synth isn't used anymore, such an ambient, unnatural sound
I thought too ticky is a girl.
Marie-Claire Chapman she is. She's based of of one of tove janssons girlfriends
She is she's just transgender
she is
Still creepy, but not as creepy as the groke at night in one of the videos
Groke is actually scared of the lady of the cold.
Still scares the shit out of me
too-thickey.
xD
Saw this when I was 3, blamed the trauma of it for all my subsequent behaviour
Poor squirrel D':
She's certainly cool.. ;)
Oh, animation was made by Polish people?!
ahh revisiting childhood trauma
pure excellence
My favourite ever kids tv episode.
this is the first i've ever seen of this

Beautiful but deadly thats the winter 🥶
This episode scared me when I was a kid
So if a person was blind/covering their eyes would they be able to walk past the lady of the cold without harm?
I think if she touches you, she can freeze you too. In the book, I think she picks up the squirrel and kisses his head.
psst there is no frozen world the squirrel is dead

Was there no horse?
i remember when i was a kid i was so scared of her

?
Dont you please have the full episodes? I cannot find them anywhere.

I'm offended that they refer to Too-ticki as ''he''.
Did the squirrel really die? Or did the horse take him to the vet?
Did she deliberately get his attention, it looked like she was taping him on the shoulder to kill him.
omfg i had nightmares about this for YEARS, its so fucking evil!
3:01 and 3:35 Creepy... :S
Saw the anime episode with the similar story. Which one is TLotC creepier in; this or the anime?
Anime, but atleast nobody died in that one.
