I am 21 years old and I am currently a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) in the state of Florida. Last year I graduated from Florida International University with my BA in Psychology. I will soon start my journey to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) as I begin graduate school this fall!
On this channel I will be discussing anything related to ABA/RBT/BCBA as well las my journey through graduate school as an online student. I am open to sharing about my daily life and any other topic you guys would like. This is all based off of my experiences and I would like to share it with you all !

Thanks for the video, it seems many of these are from Florida, I live in California, a little different. I understand about the insurance because everything takes time on that part.
This video is very helpful, short and to the point. I’m thinking about pursuing this field. I’m going through the certification classes and I feel so overwhelmed like this may not be for me. I have a fear of working with adults and having to deal with aggression or bodily fluids.

Wild world that we live in
I live in SoCal and I’ve seen RBT job listings near me that pay $18-$25 an hour. I just think it’s a bit disappointing having a bachelors degree and only getting paid a couple of dollars above minimum wage.
I am experiencing the same issue. I just busted my butt to get a degree, only to find out the jobs that require a degree pay less than McDonald's and Wal-Mart (In Tennessee). I wish you the very best!
I agree. I live in NorCal and starting at $18/hr. I have my BA in Psychology. They won't take that into consideration until after I have been working for a year.
It’s honestly pretty depressing.
In TX you get $16 with a bachelors.
Unless you have a master's nowadays, a degree doesn't mean much. It's still an achievement, but the job pool is over educated now.

Your videos have honestly given me such a sense of relief going into being an RBT… I’ve been so so nervous about transitioning into client based work after graduating with my bachelors. Trying to face my fears but I’m scared I won’t pair with the kids like I need to!

I always get nervous starting a new client but it’s an awesome experience and you get to build wonderful connections with these kiddos ☺️. Don’t be scared to ask for help or ask questions ! That is what has helped me.
If anything I should be nervous! I only have a CNA certificate and been working as a CNA for 2 years. I applied for a RBT role with no college degree. They offer a 3 week training program and an exam needed afterwards. I think they'll help me attain the needed documents needed to start working with families right away. I start In 6 days. Wish me luck!
@D no I have a Bachelor’s in Psychology with a clinical focus! I’m gonna be leaving ABA eventually to be a therapist but it’s been great experience til then!

Hi Rachel! I think it is a different experience for everyone. It can be a bit intimidating at first atleast for me it was, but once I got the hang of things it does not really bother me anymore it all depends.In this field no day is the same !

Some jobs offer training and assessment but I wonder if they will pay less compared to already have taken the 40 hour training with a private company.
Hi Valerie ! I have heard of some companies that do offer a lower pay rate when they offer the training and assessment. Sometimes there might be a contract involved as well in which you have to work for the company for a certain amount of time after you complete your RBT certification before you can leave and work with other agencies. You would have to look into that and ask the companies to make sure what their policies are. I hope this helps 🤍.

So, the shadowing and insurance stuff, is there assitance finding these opportunities? Like, this sounds like a job title I really want to be about. I have several years experience within addiction, a little training at counseling, and I have about 70 credits in Addiction Studies in college. I dont quite want to work in the addiciton field, Id perfer mental health or traditional pyschiatric. So Im not quite understanding what exactly a RBT does, what is the goal with each client? Im understanding, that youre saying an RBT helps to discipline a client, or helps keep the client on a path towards a goal, similar to recovery coach except a little involved and infividualized. I get I guess, but what settings do you find RBT's, can you qork in different settings, such as an RBT specializing in affiction, or mental health, or PTSD, etc??? This is all foregn to me, but I need to do this because its a wonderful opportunity and my mission in life is to postively impact the life of underprivledged populus ot children. Oh man, I feel all over the place but Im still trying to digest all this. Please hit me up
Right now I'm in school getting my bachelors degree in psychology, is it required to be a RBT? because I noticed most jobs in my area requires it. Nevertheless, should I start my training while I'm in school or wait until after I graduate ?

Any information on, how an international student be an RBT and practice in States?
So how do you actually get hired? Are you hired as soon as you get the certification or do you get the certification and then start applying to places? Is there a grace period between getting the certification and getting hired, during which you don't need ongoing supervision?
I recently got hired at a center for a BT position and so this is how it's been for me: they are guiding me along the way, helping me with the NPI process and certification, testing for me will be within 2-4 weeks of getting hired. I guess it all depends where you apply and their policies... good luck !

Hi Samantha! thank you for commenting ☺️. I am not sure how it works for in center RBTs but in home RBTs the schedule really revolves around the client. Usually before you get a client you will know how many hours per week are approved and then it depends on you availability and the client's as well and if the client cancels the session, etc. So it can vary !

Hey girl I’m supposed to start soon as an RBT , and I have to do my Competency assessment through zoom , and I’m wondering if you can explain what the competency assessment is and what I’m going to do during the assessment.
Hi Julimar! On the BACB website you will find the competency assessment pdf that explains exactly what you are going to have to know/ demonstrate on your competency assessment. ☺️
In the competency assessment, the supervisor would observe the technician a couple of sessions working with the client. You pretty much, implementing programs, while working with the client. For example, one of the programs could be asking for help? and you would prompt the client to ask for help. The supervisor(BCBA) would give you a score on your competency. It's a checklist for the supervisor to see where your skillset are. The purpose is to have the program manager(assistant) provide feedback to the technicians to develop their skills on areas that need improvement. Also, competency can help with your salary/ wage for the future. This is for an in-home setting from my experience. It varies from agencies though. Hopes this helps. I apologize for the paragraph. Definitely checks the BCBA website.

For the background check, shall I get the criminal background check from the local police? Also with the assessment, shall I pay a registered bacb for my assessment or work as an entry level and ask a registered bacb in that company to supervise me?
Hi ! Thank you for watching ❤️. I recently posted a video a video explaining step by step instructions on how to obtain the RBT certification if you want to check it out! To my understanding you need to obtain a level 2 background check to work as an RBT but for the application process you just need the local. The competency assessment has to be done before you can start working as an RBT it is one of the step required. Please go to the www.bacb.com where you can get more detailed instructions as well as verify/ ask any questions you may have!

I am also working on my BA degree in Sociology, and considering a MA in psychology or a BCBA, I am not sure yet what program I want to do. When you started the process where you already hired with a company or did you do it on your own and find a supervisory after you completed the 40 hours class?

Hi Gloria! Yes it can definitely be intimidating but it is so important to help you expand your skills set and make sure you are able to support your client as best you can !
What you have to renew every year it’s called continue education, here in Miami it has became extremely hard to get those two providers, also it al depends on who you know here in the city of Miami as of getting your client.
Be aware it’s your name on the documents.
Sup im currently an RBT in Fort Lauderdale. I received my medicaid ID last march and for some reason they were giving out those IDs like Costco samples. Maybe its because i work for PBS so the process was faster.

In my experience as an RBT I was not getting paid. I only received ay while in session with my Clint. From the moment I arrive to the moment I leave I am on the clock. But the training I received before and the time I was waiting to receive a client there was no pay. Just something to keep in mind.
Hi ! I also wasn’t paid until I actually started with my client. During that time I was shadowing, which was unpaid.
Another question, I saw this free rbt training recommended in youtube from Autism Partners Association. Is this legit or should I take it as a part of uni coursework? Please recommend training centers.
I have heard good things about this training but I have not personally done it. I know FIT and Ball state have a RBT 40 hour training course you can check out. Please always do your own research before you make any decision!

I would look on the BACB website, they have a section where you can find BCBA’s in your area that you can contact to do your competency, there are other agencies that do competency assessments but you would have to do your research and make sure it is reliable and accepted by the BACB. How long did it take for you to get hired at an agency? Most of the agencies require a Medicaid number or aba experience (which I don’t have). It’s so frustrating 🥺 I finished my exam over 2 weeks ago. I also live in Florida
Hello! I got hired either a week or two after passing my exam, but everyone's experience is different. Some agencies will do the medicaid number for you, you would have to call and ask them directly. As for the ABA experience use the experience you do have to the best of your ability and see how you can tie it in! I hope this helps ❤️

Rosa Somoza hello! In order to be able to become an RBT you need to do your 40 hour training, do your competency assessment, and then pass the board exam. After that depending on the agency you will have various steps you need to complete before starting with your first client. On the BACB website you should be able to locate a BCBA that can do the competency assessment, there are also various agencies that you can do the competency assessment with just make sure to research the company to ensure it is reliable and accepted by the board ! Caridad P. It does thank you just one thing what company did you do it with or did you find a bcba online? I have found package deals for the 40 hrs the assessment for 600 here in Miami but I have also found that the autism foundation does the 40 hrs free but then I would have to figure out how to get the bcba for the assessment on my own
Rosa Somoza there are some companies such as PBS Positive Behavior Support Group that do the assessment. I think this one is done virtually, you would have to look on their website or contact them for more information !
