Started Digging into my 4r100 after I lost all gears…Thanks Ford

  • Well we start digging into the 4r100 Transmission but we check something OFTEN looked over. The common loose feed bolt issue on these trucks. This is something everybody should check when your tranny "goes out" on these powerstrokes. You can get your whole transmission rebuilt for thousands when the underlying problem were bolts that backed out from factory after thousands of miles of driving. Such a shame nobody tells you about these things.

Hey Ryan I’m a transmission rebuilder and sounds to me like your solenoid pack is at fault, but as far as valve body goes I used Transgo tugger kits in mine and love them which is a reprogramming shift kit and it addresses the accumulator valve body and the main valve and also the pump if you had the trans out. As far as your support bolts if you want to tighten them, take them out and wire wheel all the factory lock tight and reply lock tight and only tighten them to 90 in lbs which is factory spec. Also the little spring you have goes under the solenoid pack and that trangso kit has you replace with a new white spring and a poppet valve, also it shows you where to put all the check balls by identifying your separator plate.

@@AverageJoeBuilds i did my allison with no prior experience. Probably the easiest transmission to rebuild. Unlike other transmissions with bands and crazy nonsense. The allison is all planetary gearsets. Literally 5 clutch packs. And the valve body had a few solenoids. I pretty much built a 1200hp allison in my garage for my first time ever building a transmission and not just swapping a junkyard one in.

Like others have pointed out definitely respect you for digging in and trying to figure this out for yourself. I was in the same boat about a year ago and a definite help for the future is the ATSG repair manual and update for the 4r100. Once a few factory flaws are taken care of these transmission become very reliable. First thing anyone who picks up 1 of these trucks wants to do is get the transmission cooler a 6.0 Powerstroke 5r100 and replace the the factory 1. When. You see the difference in size it will makes sense why the 5r100 holds up better. #1 transmission killer is heat and the original 4r100 cooler is not big enough to take care of the amount heat produced. The rest of the updates that will need to be done you'll find in the ATSG books that you can download for free. Would definitely go for the triple disk converter even if you don't plan on making huge amounts of power. Not saying you need a billet front cover triple disk converter just a tripled disk witch is what alot of the remanufactured transmissions will come with. sonex makes some really good stuff and has a kit with just about everything needed to do all the updates and there who to go to for any valve body repairs needed. I found the most help on the FTE forum when I was going thru my transmission issues in my 99.5 CCLB 7.3.

I rebuilt my manual M5OD in my garage when I blew my main drive gear and everyone said that I couldn’t rebuild it, so I did it just because everyone said I couldn’t, and it was one of the funniest builds I done, it’s basically like a bug lego, but like you I also want to rebuild an automatic. I don’t back down from a challenge. Love what you do, the grind don’t stop.

With that Hydra, make sure you got the pins on the computer perfectly clean. When I installed mine I really thought I had them clean but the tuner did nothing. I pulled the chip and recleaned the pins on the trucks computer. After reconnecting it worked perfectly. They are known to be quite sensitive to cleaning the pins.

5r100 and the 4r100 are almost the same. except Bellhousing, valve body and 5r100 has and extra gear you only use towing. Some race guys with 6.0s even do swaps cause they like how the 4r100s shift. But personally ive never had any issues with any of my 5r100s. but my 7.3 truck with the 4r100 I lost High gear and did a tranny swap with a c/l deal and its doing samething as the old trans I even swapped out the computer

My gen 2 lightning won't hold any gear, not even manually anymore. It used to work on 1&2 shift but not D. Sometimes, if you leave it on D, it'll randomly hold a gear and even reverse randomly, but after it does, it won't do it again.
I know my gears are fine, and something else is the issue, but every trans shop wats to just charge me for a rebuild because they think I blew the trans because it's a lightning. I don't even drive fast because 93 octane gas is expensive af and it chugs when you floor it.

As long as you have a builder that’s not ripping you off installing a trans kit in a old trans vision is like putting a grenade inside of it pulling the pin, and waiting to see when it goes off, and of course we all know that the triple clutch converter is only good for 200,000 at best with a combination of driving and towing, so do your homework open up the wallet and get the moths out
