i ended up giving harmful park a try yesterday based on your recommendation and ended up having a blast, clearing through it 3 times. might be the first shmup i've ever actually beaten! thanks for introducing me to one of my new favorite ps1 games (:
Some extra information: Batsugun was also released on Saturn, with the Special Version, which had some changes, like having four loops (with consecutive loops starting you on Stages 2, 3 and 4). Both are emulated perfectly in MAME. Kinda strange ZeroDiv (formerly Psikyo) haven't made a deal with Capcom to re-release Cannon Spike. If you want to play Mars Matrix, you can play it on MAME perfectly without any issues. You need to find the QSound file and put it in the ROM's zip file, because the games using QSound don't have it included for some reason. Gun-Nac is basically Parodius for the Aleste series. I think you should also check out Rendering Ranger R2, basically Super Turrican 3 without being called Turrican. Other games worth trying to play via Virtual Boy emulation (at least for me): Teleroboxer: 1st person Punchout with Robots; Jack Bros: A top-down sudo-dungeon crawler-esque spin-off from Megami Tensei; Vertical Force: A SHMUP with foreground and background changing mechanic, very similar to the Star Soldier games. In Metal Slug Advance, one of the main mechanics is collecting cards and revisiting older levels to get them all. One of them is 'Paper Thin' which gives you the OHKO, but it is very challenging, because you have no lives, despite the checkpoints. Metal Slug 7 was later remade as Metal Slug XX for PSP, then later got released on other consoles with Leona as a seventh playable character. Her special melee is OP. Phelios is also available in arcades, so try emulating it in MAME and see, if there are any major differences. Other N64 games worth emulating: Bangai-O (both N64 and DC versions have big differences, worth playing both), Sin & Punishment (if you liked Star Successor, try out the original), Mischief Makers (shake everything), Star Soldier Vanishing Earth. And that's about it, well done video showing off a lot of underappreciated games, it's the reason why I also stick with emulation, because how would I play some of these games?
Thanks for the info. There's some stuff in there I'll check out for sure. And I don't know how I forgot about Sin and Punishment. I've played that one before even.

Hahahaha, that Captain Planet reference got me good. Good selection of games here, too. I'm not going to lie, I was hoping you'd talk about Shadow of the Ninja on NES and Monster Tale on the DS (which is getting a remake soon apparently!), but oh well. There's far too many good games on older consoles to cover them all.
Great video! One game I'd like to suggest you check out is Gleylancer for the Genesis, it's a horizontal scrolling Shmup with a great soundtrack and good difficulty (at least until the later levels, those get pretty hard) and if I'm not mistaken it wasn't released outside of Japan. Another one I thought was worth mentioning were the TechnoSoft shmups, Thunder Force 3 and 4, Elemental Master, they're pretty good, give them a try Also, I DO know Phelios, played it a lot when I was a kid and recently with emulators. It's still pretty good, and I was happy to rediscover it after so many years
The Japanese version of Castlevania 3 was included in the Castlevania Anniversary Collection (as well as the Japanese versions of most of the other castlevania games on the collection but only 3 is worth playing that way). PS4 version ran with no issues on all the games I tested, though I've heard complaints about the steam version. So you still can technically buy the Japanese version of Castlevania 3.
Whelp, I knew this was gonna happen with at least one game I covered. Can't say I'm too torn up about potentially diverting sales away from Konami though.
Ahh, so that Metal Slug physical release you were waiting for worked out. That's great. And yeah, I've heard about Undercover Cops a few times now. Lol

oh Hydro Thunder! My father still has the original Arcade Port on DVD, and it still works nowadays under Windows 10 without any graphical issues or audio problems. I myself have played it quite a bit and it has become my favorite watersport racing game! Oh Gunnac...I discovered the game by pure coincidence. I bought a bootleg NES classic and there was Gunnac. Most definitely the game I had played the most on that bootleg console! I wanted to play Paper Mario for ages! but we don't have the original cartridge and this was before I even knew emulation was a thing. We bought a second-hand original Xbox one day and apparently it had 3 built in N64 emulators with a ROM selection menu. Once I saw Paper Mario was pre-installed I instantly began playing. I'm not a fan of turn-based combat games, but I really enjoyed both Paper Mario 64 and The Thousand Year Door because of those satisfying quick-time events. Such a shame the series has gone downhill since then... All these entries are really interesting! defininitely going to try some of these sometime!
I do genuinely dislike that Sony's starting to fall into the pitfall of "You wanna play our games again, wait for us to re-release it on the PS5/etc or deal with scalpers" that Nintendo's guilty of, now that they are starting to shut down the PS3, PSP, and vita storefronts.

It's wild that neither got an arcade port despite looking like an arcade port, what gives?! * Blaster Master: Blasting Again (PS1). One of the best NES exploration action with an armed tank and really nice jams gets a 3D sequel?! Yes please! Emulates particularly well, and loading times can be mitigated greatly in something like Duckstation. * Castlevania Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness (PS2). They got the 3D metroidvania formula right, really nice combat and mechanics, and... They never left the PS2?! WHY?!?!?! * Jumping Flash (PS1). How to do platforming action in first person right? Like this game did, that's how. * Steel Empire (SMD, GBA, 3DS). A Steampunk shoot'em up where you have buttons dedicated to shooting left and right. the remake on 3DS is particularly amazing and, while it was ported to Steam... The Steam port is sadly very shoddy, crashes too much, forces the outdated model of fullscreen as opposed to borderless, and the devs left it to rot. * Mega Man X Command Mission (PS2, NGC). The perfect Mega Man RPG with interactive combat. Hearing X say "Charge shot!" never gets old. * Battle Arena Toshinden (SGB). A SD-style port/remake of the 3D fighting game with smooth animation and really well chiptuned renditions of the original's themes. * Terranigma (SNES). Action RPG about reviving Earth, has a deep and dark underlying plot, as well as touching various sensitive subjects for American parents of the era (partially justifying why it never made it in the USA), such as war, slave trading, plague, death, murder, and even religion. Also worth noting that Ark isn't the typical righteous hero: before setting off on a journey because his own mischief caused problems, he used to harass the chickens, disobey his elder, and be a troublemaker. Surprising, isn't it? * Getsu Fuuma Den (NES). Yet another of the "forever stuck in Japan" games, even if you can buy the emulated port of it on any system nowadays. There are two fan translations, the RPGe "jank" and the Nebulous Translations, and the later of which not only works with the Steam port (after decompiling the binary, patching the rom, and recompiling), but also works with Steam Achievements and changes the title to The Legend of Fuma. Basically a lovechild between Castlevania and Zelda 2. Oh, and has Whip Skeletons too. * Sonic Rush, Rush Adventure, and Colors (NDS). Three really amazing and fun sonic games that I really wish got ports. Sadly the closest we got to any of them is Colors Ultimate, which is a very bad port of the WII game. * Metal Max (NES), Metal Max Returns (SNES), Metal Max 2 Reloaded (NDS), Metal Max 3 (NDS). None had official localization, all these are localized by fans, and the best way to describe is "What if Mad Max was an open world JRPG with a bit of the feel of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest?". There's many quests to do, powerful Wanted monsters to slay, various armed vehicles to collect and modify, rocking tunes, an optional minigame for the case you want to bet some money... And the overworld theme before you get a vehicle is suspiciously similar to Dragon Quest. You can also end the game before killing the big bad, by choosing to retire (1 & Returns), moving in to live with one of your potential wives (2 Reloaded), or simply accepting to run away with the princess when she offers to (3)
Those are great recommendations, but the spirit of the video is to showcase games that generally can't easily be played or purchased by modern means.
