- Now I know this quad is too loud to get in and I understand that and that is perfectly. fine but the stuff about the spark arrestor is a bunch of BS my FMF pipe spark arrestor that I bought doesn't even have that on it or my Toomey spark arrestor in fact I have never seen a spark arrestor with that label on it. But cops (dnr) were cool tho..

Ok so a guy on a 130+ decibel Harley can haul ass through the middle of a neighborhood/city and he doesn't get a ticket or have to comply with any decibel level. Oh but yet you guys out in the dunes in the middle of no fucking where can get tickets for being too loud. The sound level law is fucking stupid!!

My old vulcan 1500 had shorty straights and I swear it was at 120db at least. Especially at highway speeds. If I rode without earplugs I would suffer temporary hearing loss for a couple hours. I never got any hassle out of anyone though, at least I couldn't hear them if I did lol
Stoned Red eye's the worst thing about straight pipes isn't that they're loud, it's that they're a display of plain, sheer stupidity. You LOSE performance when you straight pipe. When people straight pipe their bikes, they're actually losing performance over the stock setup. And most don't even tune their vehicle so they're running lean. You make hp and torque from the backpressure a canister creates
+ReaIDeaI1 if the pipes are tuned to the proper length they'll create enough back pressure, while not burning your valves up as well. if they're chopped in a shop by Cletus then it's a whole different story.

Permanent hearing loss begins to occur at ~85 dB. The reading shouldn't have been taken from the tip of the exhaust, but it was still way too loud. 114dB will affect your hearing big time...

My grandpa, uncle and I received tickets for not having spark arrestors on our quads while at a SAND drag strip in the dunes. Like honestly, will the sand EVER catch fire?!?! Not only that, but as they were citing us, there were multiple other OHV's such as sand rails driving by with straight pipes!!! It was so bs. Ruined our trip.

Decibel measurements are taken at 40 inches (3ft 4 inches) away from the source. NOT next to the exhaust!!! That officer was not instructed on how to measure it properly.

Decibals are measured for sound pressure. You can blow into a db reader and get a 170db reading and a yell won't register. "Mufflers" break up pressure waves from exhaust to quiet them.

Well if your going slow or on a quiet bike, yeah, your gonna hear a loud two stroke behind you. Sound echoes and carries a lot over dunes. So yes, it’s nice to have loud pipes so people know where you are, my friend got lost and that’s how we found him. So chill out

I have my doubts, I’ve been to silver lake quite a few times and there isn’t anything in the dunes. Wherever there is protected wildlife they close off that portion of the dunes. There is a massive off limits area where the wildlife and plant life is.
Has to be tested in California if they're going to be sold in California... same reason why companies like Toyota have two different emissions protocol standards, one for vehicles intended for sale in California (which has the strictest laws on emissions), and one for all other 49 states.

Spark arrestors...my story...two years ago I had my grand kids in the tub buggy and we were going through the Silver Lake Sand Dunes entry gate and one of the DNR girls started fussing with the helmet my grand kid was wearing, it was just enough delay that one of the DNR officers stepped out of the shack and told me there were no spark arrestors on my exhaust and we couldn't go in, grandkids on que go "WHAAAA! We want to go on the dunes!" So across the street I go to B and L Sports, buy a new exhaust system and spark arrestor and 30 minutes later we are back on the dunes with a little more power!
Moral to the story, Spend the money now and save yourself a half hour!

Two things: First off, these forest service dudes were super respectful and cool.. props to them. they're doing their job, they had a lot of good, straight to the point facts to back up their info.
Second: The law (at least in Oregon, where im from) states that it can be a max of 89 dB when tested 25 feet away from the pipe. The nerdy forest service assistant was holding the tester right against the damn pipe like he wanted to be up inside it. This isn't your prom date, you need to test a certain distance away. im sure other states have different distances. be informed! these guys know they're loud AF, they should know they run the risk of getting stopped and tested. but most importantly they should have been informed and told the ranger to back up to the required testing distance.

what's the decible limit there? I think I heard 94 db, but don't most stock MX bikes and quads reach upwards of 100+? I couldn't find any stats for my 06' 250 so I'm going out on a whim here. but that's nuts they won't let you ride the dunes with that beast, noise and sparks are of little worry out in sand.
also putting the meter right ON the pipe is going to pick up much more vibration which causes the piezoelectric crystal to vibrate more giving a false high reading, aren't these tests supposed to be done at a certian amount of feet away at a certian rpm, and then taken at a meter at wide open throttle? looks like these guys need some more training I'm sound testing. on a side note pull your clutch in when doing the test as it does reduce the db output.
There are two standardized tests.
1. 50 foot 2nd gear WOT test (this is considered a less reliable test) and the limit is 82db
2. The 20 inch test. The meter is supposed to be a minimum of 20 inches from the end of the pipe. and the limit is 96db (as of 2003)
Interestingly enough it was found that on the 20 inch test a difference in 50 rpm can drastically change the db results of the test, as can the distance of the meter from the pipe.
In the study I read they did another test after 24 hours and it revealed that the db levels of the test bikes naturally went down. It is theorized that things such as rich fuel mixture conditions and dirty air filters bring down the DB produced by a given bike.

He kinda just gives some of the neighborhood kids rides and stuff but the elders always call the police on the noise complaint. Never test his bike on a db scale. Is it something against atvs utvs and stuff
the spark arrestor thing isn't bullshit. most factory and aftermarket exhausts have a stamp on the end of the pipe and a screen material and its marked "usfs spark arestor: model# xxx" you can get a screen for the end of the pipe and technically that would be a arrestor. why you wouldnt put a muffler on it is beyond me. that thing is loud as shit. sounds like a honda civic with open headers lol

I've seen bikes catch Woods on fire without Spark arrestors,you should always use one in less MX track only.now them being stamped ? I run pro circuit spark arrestors are removable and I have never seen one with a stamp.

USFS is federal and the guidelines have nothing to do with Cali unless you are in Cali or a state which follows California rules and regs..... "Noise levels will be checked at a twenty-inch distance from the exhaust pipe at half the vehicle's rated revolutions per minute (RPM) or as detailed in the automotive specifications SAE J1169, March 92 or SAE J1287, June 86. The maximum noise level permitted under these testing conditions will be 94 dBa which is the current limit set by the Off-Road Recreation Vehicles Act of Part 811 of 1994 PA 451 (MCL 324.811). All vehicles are required to have a muffler and spark arrester containing baffles meeting established United States Forest Service (USFS) specifications." "Park Rangers or other Law Enforcement Officials may insert a plastic rod into the vehicle's exhaust pipe to determine whether there is a spark arrester or baffle present"
Simple use 2 sets of pipes or take some plugs along. She will barely run with the plugs but it will get u under the 94

You do know that if you just take it down to city hall and show that you paid $500 to a state mechanic to try to lower the db level unsuccessfully you can pay for a db waiver after you pay for the green pipe inspection fee after you pay orv park reinstatement fee before the carbon tax at the same time you apply for the sand displacement fee with sand relocation fee and undocumented detour fee on top of the hearing protection fee (for those that can't afford ear plugs) you will get a sticker. This must be done within 7 days or your fees will be forfeited and you will need to start the process over. Easy...
