Nice to see her on the track. The brake pedal has a dowl kind of setup that gets sloppy over time. I pulled mine out and redrilled and put in a new pin or bolt and it made a huge difference to being able to heal and toe. I have 1 inch master with reckoned booster and my pedal isint touchy with my 4 pots. Maybe try some different brake pads as mine use to be touchy like that . Good luck 👍
Thanks Tolly, will take a look at the dowel setup on the brake pedal and see if it has a ton of play. Did you change out your proportioning valve? We still have the rear drum prop valve in place, so are thinking that may be part of the problem.
After working on cars for over 10 years I'm done with exhaust/interior leaks. I raced a ported FB with holes in the interior that the owner wouldn't plug (claimed it didn't matter once on track). It was brutal to huff those rotary fumes - never again. There are also a lot of things under the hood getting hot and likely putting out fumes and vapor of their own. For the next Patreon goal, Dave would like one roll of tape. Carbon Monoxide has no smell and lingers for hours (or longer) inside any closed space; it also absorbs into any fabric and likely wood + drywall that isn't painted etc. Do not allow exhaust gas to accumulate in your car or shop without venting thoroughly.
Celica is making laps and donuts 🍩. I love this Build keeping Old School alive. I’m a Mazda Rotary guy now with my 1st gen Rx7 but a Te72 was my 1st car ever had. Older Imports just have a different feel more raw and down to basics what I love. Also ITB’S sounds amazing.
Brings back memories I had a 1977 Celica GT liftback I ended up having to sell it because of growing family . It must of had over 350k miles when I sold it in 2005 Had headers , high performance Cam and western style wheels Painted silver with 2 black racing stripes Biggest problem I had was with clutch master cylinder. Went Thur 5 of them and 1 clutch and slave cylinder. Ones made the month after mine started to use 1978 design in 1977 model year which fixed the problem.
I drove my 2001 MX5 NB 6 speed without the shifter boot and centre console plastic removed for a couple weeks :D It was great fun and exciting to see the driveshaft spinning so close, and the noise was great too, but sadly unwelcome guests arrived (insects), and the heat from the transmission made the cabin too hot, so had to put a new boot back on and the centre console. This vid brings those memories back, miss that car :(
Congrats on making it to the track. I still remember my first day of autocross in my Datsun 510. I was just waiting for something to break and make bad sounds since I built the thing in my garage with very little knowledge of how to do anything I did. It was a great learning experience, and I learn something new every day about my car and what changes I'll make. The track is one of the best places to learn these things since you can drive it to the "extreme" and really stress components. I'm excited to see more of this car and what changes you'll make to make it even more capable and drivable.
Connie is what brought me to you guys. I'm so glad to see her "up and about" on her own. I'm looking forward to the shakedown process. I sure hope you take us through it with you.
What you could've done on-track was to pull the vacuum hose to the booster and plugged it with anything available. Maybe with that size master cylinder, you could drive without. Improves the feedback considerably too. Just a thought.
Good idea, Paul. We're told by others running this same combo of booster and MC that we shouldn't have an issue, so we suspect the problem stems from the proportioning valve (this car came with drum rear brakes and now that we've converted to rear discs we should have converted to either a AE86 rear disc prop valve or an adjustable one from Wilwood...we've already ordered the latter).
Might be a good idea to run a fuel surge tank or fuel cell. Tanks in factory carbureted cars usually have no baffling to prevent cavitation of your EFI pump. Had the same issue in my KP61 with the factory tank as low as 1/4 fuel level. Installing a surge tank and primer pump solved the issue.
Sounds like a thousand happy unicorns! 👍🏻 I was kinda expecting Moose to be there for the first track run, I guess he was occupied with saving the world at the time. 😊
I believe Moose is in Mississippi where he did a rolling stop thru a stop sign now picking up tin cans on a chain gang. Hopefully he will get out for good behaviour and be back for Connie's at next track time. Connie sounds good. Three years later and shes running/driving; way to stick with it.
at 09:45 over your left shoulder - if you ever get the chance put Connie side by side with a Scion FRS. It is uncanny how much Connie DNA is in the Scion FRS there's so many similar proportions and shapes
At last!! Connie is moving and it is looking great!! A bit rough of course but grip seems to be plenty in the first corners you threw it after the straight!! How is the suspension DP?It looks like it has no roll at all through the S but then again at 06:10 when you exit the corner with 3rd the car is bouncing quite a lot until it settles again. It could be that this is also a part that needs a bit of fine tuning. Last but not least, sounds is awesome! Didn't know this engine sounds so good :) And gearing ratio seems to be matching nicely the engine. Especially 4th sounds to be short enough to go through her quite fast! Love it! Cant wait for the next video of her.
It would be so nice to see these custom hot-rods adopted the bioethanol fuel as the primary fuel - so much more forgiving in case there is a fuel leak and a spark. Lower vapor pressure and thus energy content means one needed some more of the fuel compared to gasoline, but as a benefit explosive alcohol fires are rare.
The first gen' made Celica. People will argue, with tech' talk, but, this is such a beautiful car, with a strong motor, and, it is a beautiful car. Japan could style, they did style.
Have you thought to have the alignment checked after the track day? Hear me out. He said it was very temperamental to align, and early Japanese cars were not always known for being constructed of the thickest grade of steel. Checking the alignment would be a good way to see if things you don't want moving around are in fact not moving around or possibly learn you need to go back and stitch weld some of the unibody joints at least in the shock towers and subframe (like most uni body race cars at the time). Before you paint it. (Possibly add a strut tower bar). Worse comes to worse make it into a 6 or 8 point cage by tying more of the suspension points together to the interior cage.
Great swap, glad you've got it running now :) Did you pull out the spring on the push rod for the MC that's commonly called a the pump up valve to keep a small amount of pressure on the pistons of old rear drum setup? Tends to make the rears lock up a bit.
Hey DP, Ive run into the same issue you are describing with the brakes. Ive often found, when changing master and boosters, that the pushrod length is incorrectly adjusted. What happens is excessive clearance between the end of the pushrod and the back of the piston in the master, it causes the pedal to travel excessively before it actually starts pushing the piston forward......By then you have a HEAP of vac assistance from the booster and it kind of quickly applies too much brake pressure. Try adjusting that pushrod length (the end of the pushrod should screw in and out). Also, if you have upgraded that master to a later style, it might have the prop valve inside the master? So if you are still running the external OE prop valve as well, that will do weird things to the system. Toyota guys that upgrade to a Nissan master (ae86 upgrade) often have this issue as the BM Nissan masters have the prop valve built in. Cheers mate
i had the same symptoms when i upgraded to 5 stud on my ek and didn't change to a 1" booster or it could either be that the prop valve that needs to be looked at also good luck!
We're pretty sure it's the prop valve, since we left the OE drum brake prop valve in place and it really needs a disc prop valve now that we've got the big Wilwoods out back. Silly oversight on our part.
Let's start the technical evaluation of our project car... WOW... it rips ... WOW... Hi, this is David Pratte and we are doing human fireball. Not even the Hoonigans do donuts with leaking gas prawblems. :P The car was out of gas because it was leaking.
lol human fireball. Luckily my beard is made from Nomex. I have since been told that with this gas tank anything below a half tank and you get starving in righthanders when ripping hard. So we'll need a gas cap that actually works since we'll be running it over half full all the time. Or maybe there's a fuel cell or Holley HydraMat in it's future. Time will tell.
I have RA24, and every time I try to do any research on these first gen Celica's, everything is (Dare I say it) clouded in mystery... It's so difficult to find original specing options, standard and optional equipment. Even when I found the only forum, I was hoping to find info about the car, (1stgencelicas.com) they have everything accessible without a member login that they must approve after talking to you. Simply a matter of installing the harness in the easiest way possible for now (eventually we will wrap it). Not the fastest, but definitely the best sounding car on track that day. Would've made a cool Hoonigan style shot to have a GoPro pointed at the spinning driveshaft (with a little light on to make it easy to see) it through that hole. Not the point of the video, I know, but I can't help but think about these things sometimes.
If you've had the brake booster out (are you still running a brake booster? If not then ignore me) its possible that the reaction disc has fallen out of place, down into the booster housing. This will cause the brakes to basically not work, till the pedal travel gets to a certain point, at which the booster gives full assist. I've done it to myself on an old mitsubishi (Sapporo Coupe), and have seen it on a Datsun 240Z also. Not specifically an old celica, but in the same era. I have the same Fuel Tank setup in my 77 Celica and when I take it on the race track I can't let the fuel tank get below halfway or it fuel starves on Right Handers. The tank is not baffled well. I was thinking of trying that Holley HydraMat next. I was totally expecting the fuel leak to come from the filler because that happened to me as well!
thanks for the feedback! It was in a righthander that ours was starving, too. A Holley HydraMat is a great idea. We'll have to look into that option. Eventually we may do a fuel cell.
Great shakedown Dave! I like how your door has the only door card or interior pieces, for leg comfort no doubt if you brace on the door like i do in a hard turn, lol. If this were an OE 77 Celica, I'd ask if you slammed on the brakes in reverse for the adjustment, but you have that big brake swap so I'm not sure. The Beams engine sounds perfect in this car, can't wait for the hot lap times! Great job Pete, Dave, and a little hand from the NV Auto main man himself! Gas runs in a Corvette, for when time is a factor! ✌😎
We left the OE drum brake prop valve in place, thinking we just need a disc prop valve (or adjustable prop valve, which we've ordered...hoping that'll be the fix).

Awesome project! Really wanted you guys to finish off the paint and get everything dialed in. Makes me want to put a BEAMS in my 71.
awesome man! nice to see her on the track!!!
Cheers from Argentina guys!!
This is what I really want to see finished. This car is like a dream to me. I can't wait to see the final form of it
Yes!!! So glad you guys have it at the track now!! Love this build!
Connie, Connie, Connie..
Don't get your knickers in a twist, always check for leakage after DP...

i watched the build from the beginning, proud of you guys!
Great shakedown! Awesome sound!
Thanks Mark! Time for you guys take a vacation to Ontario and go for a rip in Connie. Free rental car :P
Itbs + limiter = 😎 sounds awesome!
She rips! Nice work. It's been a long time coming to finally drive her.
This has been my favorite build so far! Happy donuts!!!
That limiter sounds exactly like an A-10 Warthog firing. Such a cool build, can't wait to see more!
Connie is what brought me to you guys. I'm so glad to see her "up and about" on her own. I'm looking forward to the shakedown process. I sure hope you take us through it with you.
I have been waiting for so long :) good to see it working fine!
I LOVE IT cant wait to see it painted man
Great to see it coming together for you guys. Pretty rewarding project I'm sure.
Looks fast! Excellent progress.
Finally out on track. Nicely done
Sounds so good cant wait for more progress. Good work.
Nice to see her running!! I'd like to see the brake issue resolved and not have to wait till after winter!
Congrats dp this build is a work of art. I'm definitely getting some itbs for my beams!!!

I like these no BS videos. I know every one can't be like this but damn. Good drive.
Super stoked for you guys. Amazing work , she is already looking and sounding amazing... Congratulations! Loving this build.
Awesome. Just awesome.
WOOHOOO, Connie is showing some legs, wowzer. With a car that light and the leverage of the big brakes you probably won't need the brake booster.
Haha! I'm Happy for you man. She sounds amazing! I'm about to be in a similar situation with my e30. :D

nice to see Connie finally on the track... awesome in a word... but... I'm kinda jelly - makes me want one for myself!

Why are the harnesses attached to the rear floor and not wrapped around the cross bar?
HSB right?? And the angle that those harnesses are attached at aren’t safe
the angle is 100% safe and to Takata's specs for the Drift III snap-in kit. It's designed to be installed this way.
Simply a matter of installing the harness in the easiest way possible for now (eventually we will wrap it). ITB's tend to have fuel stand off especially if you are running airfilterless, that can extend 5"+ out of the velocity stacks that might be the smell.
I had exactly the same problem with my brakes. Was the Servo/Booster being too big. Went to a smaller Ke70 one and fixed it right up.
