Jennifer, could I ask a question related to subject verb agreement one of my students asked me whether to use a plural or singular verb in the following sentence : two eggs and a piece of cake ( is or are ) my breakfast . thank you in advance
If you have more than one thing, the subject is plural: Two eggs are broken. If you view all the items as one unit, the subject is singular: Two eggs with a slice of toast and some juice is my usual breakfast. This is true with numbers as well. How many people are coming? - I think 5 or 6 are coming. Oh, that's nice. 5 or 6 is fine. We have a small table. 8 would be too many.
thank you so much Jennifer for your kind reply, I think what we call deep structure plays a great part in deciding what to choose , or pragmatics as well, I mean the meaning inside the speaker's mind ,don't you agree ?
This is what I learned from high school textbooks in Japan 40 years ago. It was called "5 sentence structures.“ Is it taught in US? I can’t find other RUclips videos teaching this.

Hi Jennifer, so the pattern SVC is the same as the pattern SVCC: Example: I am excited and I am excited about the trip. The first sentence is the pattern of S+V(Liking verb+ subject complement. The second one is the pattern of S+V+subject complement( which describes the subject)+ adjective complement( which explains the adjective).
Not all sources agree on the role of prepositional phrases in certain combinations. In the end, it's just best to remember "excited about" as a collocation. But, yes, I see "I am excited about the trip" as SVCC. Subject + linking verb + subject complement + adjective complement. Sometimes complements are necessary, but other times they're there for clarification or more detail. For example, when I introduce myself, it would be weird to say, "It's nice" instead of "It's nice to meet you." The infinitive phrase is a necessary complement.

In reported speech the word order is straight. Similar to embedded sentences. This is very basic. The dog was lying on the floor chewing into his bone. I used to write grammar examples of my own. Good information. Thx. Indirect object is the same as dative. This is nice .😍 I know these.

Hi Edson. This was an experiment to see how we all handle a longer lesson. ;) In any case, it's something you all can come back to and watch in parts. Take care.
Dear JenniferESL I do not object to learning or repeating things that need to be done so to. I can swallow my pride with ease. The thing is I'd rather do things all-inclusively in English . The Swedish in my sixth form , A-level, practice book doesn't get me triggered as does Finnish. TY. I also discussed this with my mother during her last weeks at the ward. I still manage this basic stuff.
Your knowledge of different languages has most likely sharpened your mind and given rich insights. Yes, there's value in repetition and review. Of course, it's only natural to desire some novelty as well!
Dear Jenifer, you are a great teacher. Your explanation is clear and easy to understand. My ESL students asked me to explain the difference between sentence pattern and sentence structure. Would you mind sharing me the basic and simple answer to them?
We can talk about the structure of each individual sentence. Patterns are what many different sentences have in common. I also like to differentiate between patterns, structures, and types. You may find the two videos on this page useful: englishwithjennifer.com/students/improve-your-writing-2/

Hi jennifer. I think that everyone has to learn these patterns but after knowing how to speak. What i mean is that rules always come after. I know how to build a sentence without knowing these patterns. I think they exist to adjust the language like any language, but they are really useful
Yes, you need some language already to make sense of the patterns. Some grammar can be learned through practice and use. Other aspects need to be studied directly. It also depends on the learner. One method doesn't work for everyone. Thanks for reflecting on this.

The technique -Colour coding the parts of speech to teach Sentence Patterns is a great idea. Kudos!
Thank you for the kind support! 😃
The sentence "I haven’t been practising" is not an SV (Subject + Verb) sentence in its simplest form. It includes auxiliary verbs and a present participle, making it more complex. Here’s the breakdown:
Subject: I
Verb phrase: haven’t been practising
This structure involves auxiliary verbs ("have" + "been") and the main verb in its -ing form ("practising"). So, it's a Subject + Verb phrase sentence, but not a pure SV pattern.
To teach basic sentences patterns, I'd label it as SV. We can always break down a subject (noun phrase, for example) or a verb further if necessary.

God bless you
Thank you for studying with me.
My teacher encouraged me to teach from the age of 12. (A bit under the cover.)One of the best pieces of advice I ever got. I am NOT a learner! Money can buy something that we need on a daily basis.
Teaching really helps you learn a subject better. ;)
I got A's through n through. Teaching needs good critical
analytic skills. I know all that you are talking about. The native aspect gives a deeper insight to the grammar. I went to the school of my ex's ,with native teachers for 16 years. I took the CFCE in English. I failed n got a b
There's always a new goal to reach. :)

i never heard of these grammars , i found it very useful.
Glad it was helpful!
This is a very useful lesson and delivered beautifully.
Hi there! Thank you for the very kind comment. I'm glad you enjoyed this grammar lesson. :) Take care!
There was some confusion regarding complements in a sentence, but you simplified that area with style. That's my compliment to you :>)
Love your teaching ❤️. Namaste
Thank you so much!
In reported speech the word order is straight. Similar to embedded sentences.
This is very basic. The dog was lying on the floor chewing into his bone. I used to write grammar examples of my own. Good information. Thx. Indirect object is the same as dative. This is nice .😍 I know these.
I didn't learn the term "dative" until I started studying Russian. :)
You are wonderful in fact you are blessings to me.
Thank you for studying with me.

Good. Like always. Thanks a lot Jennifer. I was waiting for your post like you always do on thurdays.
Absolutely..I learnt with Roxette songs.. And it was the most useful way to learn ...thanks for reminding me of that ...
Thank you for presenting so meticulously and effectively!
You are so welcome! 😃
We're studying sentence structure and sentence variety this month in our Patreon live sessions. You can become a member and join the live group sessions on June 11, 18, 25.

Hi jennifer. I think that everyone has to learn these patterns but after knowing how to speak.
What i mean is that rules always come after.
I know how to build a sentence without knowing these patterns.
I think they exist to adjust the language like any language,
but they are really useful
Yes, you need some language already to make sense of the patterns. Some grammar can be learned through practice and use. Other aspects need to be studied directly. It also depends on the learner. One method doesn't work for everyone.
Thanks for reflecting on this.
Mam Jennifer, I am from Your way of teaching is fantastic
Thank you! 😃
I am so glad I listened to this I finally understand patterns
I'm very happy to hear that.
