Hi everyone! Did you find it useful to review the types of clauses we build sentences with? Around 2:27 I challenged you to identify independent clauses. I debated about including a clause with the pronoun "whoever." Perhaps we can have a lesson on -EVER words in the future. If you think that's a good idea, then LIKE THIS COMMENT.
-EVER words appear in embedded questions:
a. You can choose whichever one you want. [object of verb]
b. You can ask who(m)ever you want. [object of verb]
c. However you want to do it is fine by me. [subject]
-EVER words might also appear in some adverb clauses:
d. He has the freedom to go wherever he likes. [Where?]
c. Come visit me whenever you have the time. [When?]
-EVER words can also help us form questions:
e. However will you manage?
f. Whoever can be calling at this hour?
There are a couple other uses we could look at. In short, I presented "whoever" in this lesson to highlight its use in an embedded question. Without additional context, "whoever is youngest" doesn't make much sense.
ADDITIONAL NOTE: I apologize for the typo at 9:39. I left out the S in "questions." Somehow my eyes missed that!

Hi dear Jennifer . How are you? I hope you are doing well.
My name is majid and I have seen your videos for a few months but I have a problem , I am not able to improve my English language .l am crasy about this language but i don't know why I can't move on at this issue. When a native speaker speak English I don't get at all but if that video had subtitel i bet that understood 90% their sentences
You are native and i am so sorry becuse I had very mistake in my sentences
May you guide me what I can do and how I should start to learn English
Tnx a bunch
I think you should break it down to separate videos and discuss each type individually. I have watched this video 7 times pausing on examples and when explanations are shown, and I still failed my practice test. Secondly you say "with all the examples given" but for nouns you only start clauses with "how" and did not even cut away for any examples with adjective clauses (which by the way start with question words as well). I just feel like I am frustrated and back in school where there are rules given but no explanations or concepts that are really driven home.
Yes
Yeah very useful i hope all teachers become like you SMART TEACHER💜
Thomas Adams yeah i am totally agree with you💜
I am an ESL teacher, and I was familiar with your videos addressing low-level grammar structures, which I recommended to my beginning-level students often. They love your patience and clarity with material that often is so confounding to them.
I am presently reviewing videos for higher-level grammar for my Intermediate Writing class. I was disappointed to find so many videos from other instructors full of errors and misconceptions that created confusion on the part of the student. Then I ran across your video! You show the same clarity and patience with the more complex information. I feel confident that your presentation will be openly welcomed by the students. Thanks so much for your tireless efforts to make English accessible to non-native speakers of English! You do a wonderful job of it!
Hi Sandra. I'm always very happy to hear from other ESL teachers. Thank you for taking the time to post your comment. I'm glad this video may be a resource for your upper level students. Here are all my RUclips playlists. www.englishwithjennifer.com/students/yt-videos/ I have a lot of intermediate and advanced lessons. I do my best to get things right, especially with grammar. I consult my favorite books and see what else I can find online from reputable sites. I've also been known to reach out to my colleagues, a few of whom have published much more than I have! Some of my doubts and frustrations end up becoming blog posts. englishwithjennifer.wordpress.com/ There's a whole category called Student Stumpers. Happy teaching to you!
You're a great teacher. Your lessons are so easy and interesting to follow. Your grammar explanation sounds like a nightingale songs to my ears. From now onwards, I visit your website every night to brush up on my grammar and teaching grammar. Thanks very much for your contribution to your followers on the RUclips.
Thank you for the beautiful comment! 😃 Please continue to enjoy my videos. The playlists are on my website. If you'd like more practice, please consider my membership programs on RUclips and Patreon. Kind regards!
I confused with all explanations, but I understand the examples, and when I see the chart of differents clauses I Think I understand much more.in this lesson we have much information to learn by heart. thank you for all your effort with us.
Fantastic.... The best teacher on RUclips!!!!!!
Thank you! 😃 I appreciate the support.
Hi Jennifer, you are a great teacher, you always give interesting lessons, I congratulate you for such an excellent job.
Thank you, Oswald. I'm happy you find my lessons interesting.
Dear my lovely teacher Jennifer, my English is very basic your videos are inspiration me to try to speak English which are in my country (Thailand) It's about 20% of Thai people could speak Eng. Thank you very much for share knowledges to everyone included me.
Thank you for studying with me. :)
Despite the lack of time, whoever can learn English following your lessons! I wish I could master this beautiful language that is changing the world to communicate wherever I go. Thank you!
You're welcome Antonio. You'll get there. :) It's important to build good clauses to get clear sentences. Here are my suggestions:
Despite the lack of time, anyone can learn English following your lessons! (If you want to use "whoever," you might say: Anyone, whoever they may be, can learn English following your lessons.)
I wish I could master this beautiful language that is changing how I communicate wherever I go. OR ...how we communicate wherever we go.
After reading my grammar book and looking up in the dictionary, I just can't figure out the different usage of anyone and whoever, because in this case in Italian they're both translated with the same word ("chiunque"), so it's a bit confusing. How could I avoid mistakes? Thank you, Jennifer.
An excellent teacher in teaching English Grammer!
Thank you! 😃
I have improved my English over the years thanks to many of your lessons.Thank you so much!

This lesson was right up my street as I love the lessons encouraging creative writing. I am also quite interested in that game with the blocks. I have visions of the blocks scattering all over the place and anger growing when they do.

REALLY WONDERFUL...!!! One of my passion, maybe the most one, was to be able to memorize and understand all about grammar and writing correctly. even in my one matter language, that is Portuguese. I am so proud of your lesson. God bless you and your family and ministry so much.
With practice, the grammar structures will become more familiar. Be sure to read and listen regularly to good models.
Corrections to help your studies:
One of my passions, maybe the strongest one, has been to memorize and understand everything about using grammar and writing correctly. This is true even in my native language (mother tongue), which is Portuguese.
Thanks Jennifer for this video
You are a great teacher
Have a nice weekend
You're welcome. Enjoy your weekend as well!
Clear explanations. Thank you. Could you please show us how to write an analytical essay about language / language history?
Hello. I may address essay writing at some point on RUclips, but mostly I address writing skills in the context of private lessons. My Patreon group classes have focused on writing skills, but not essays yet. I cover what the group votes on.
I usually don't comment on videos, but I felt like I must comment on this one. It was so helpful! I couldn’t understand what clause was until I watched your video. Thank you so much Ma'am, please keep uploading such educational videos. And take care of yourself and your family :)

Your the best ma'am
Thank u very much
You can also combine an interdependent clause with an independent clause, which, as a standalone sentence, is a fragment and not a full sentence, but in the context of the preceding sentence, forms a complete thought as an additional commentary on the previous sentence.
For example:
"The giraffe met a polar bear in The Bahamas.
They were out of place."
"They were out of place" is an interdependent clause because it stands alone as a commentary on the first sentence. The two sentence form two complete thoughts, but the second complete thought becomes a fragment without the context of the first sentence.
Interesting line of thinking! I think the main takeaway is that context is crucial. Discussion of grammar can't always be limited to the sentence level. We have to look at whole texts and whole conversations.
@@Englishwithjennifer absolutely, grammar is both contextual and situational, that's why it's always evolving.
Thank you Jennifer for the lesson. Love it as it is helpful to me.
Very happy to hear that. :)

jinnefer thank you very much

Thank you for watching my lesson.

You're welcome.
Thank you, Jennifer, for this accurate lesson!
I have not understood the difference between adjective clause ( or relative clause) with relative adverbs like when, where, why, and some adverb clauses using when or where too.
I guess the difference is very subtle...
You can go back to that earlier lesson on adjective clauses with those words (when, where, why). They're less common than those with which, who, and that. When you review, feel free to post your own examples for practice. Look at what others wrote too.
Thanks a lot for the hard work 👍
My pleasure. Thank you for studying with me.

What an amazing lesson Jennifer!
There is also what is called embedded clauses , which I searched for in your channel, but I couldn't find. These are clauses inside other clauses that help us add complexity to the sentence and help in the reading sections , they're rather tricky though. for example, we could have an adverb clause within a noun clause.
I came across this sentence that has embedded clauses:
This is supported by a recent study conducted at Oxford University, in which they claim *that **_as china increasingly imports varieties of edible items from different countries via air transport, the level of carbon dioxide rises sharply_* and that, inevitably , more chines people are suffering from asthma.
there is an adverb clause staring with as , as china increasingly imports .. etc inside the noun clause starting with That, which is object to the verb *claim* and the whole thing is part of the noun clause..
Indeed, grammar can be quite complex! I usually focus on embedded questions (noun clauses with WH words). I have a few videos on that topic.

Sentence -- > The team that you used to play for has done well this year, even though they didn't win all their game.
IC : - The team has done well this year
DC1 : Adjective Clause : that you used to play for
DC2 : even though they didn't win all their game
I can't understand clause type and role of DC2. Is it a adverb clause modifying verb = well ?
Think of substituting that with "surprisingly" >> They have done surprisingly well.
The element of a surprising contrast is the same. It modifies the verb phrase "has done well this year."
