That looks awesome and fast. Just what I need for my Leviathan Box of bugs! I really appreciate your speed painting videos -- highly approachable and the use of washes/inks/contrast paints makes them very noob friendly. I find a lot of techniques can require careful precision and my bad eyes and unsteady hands mess them up.
@@VinceVenturella speaking of Daler Rowney inks and paynes grey. If you could only have a limited selection of inks to start off with, what would your suggestion be for say 6 inks to build from? I assume white and paynes grey would certainly make their way into the mix. Also how is the variance between those inks and say GW's old ink line, as I still have a few sitting around from those days (black, flesh, chestnut, blue, thst sort of thing)
This is a perfect example of how experience doesn't just show as precise brushstrokes, but also as planing and decision making. Anyone can move their brush like you do on this video, but the steps and their order are very well thought and sometimes may seem conterintuitive. Amazing job as always, not only on the mini, but also on how you explain your process.
By the way, I'm trying to paint a white shirt on a big miniature (Rosie by Fer Miniatures) and I struggle to keep it visually interesting and with enough contrast but still reading as white. I watched you painting white before but in armour, not in clothes. Can you refer me to a video where you do it, if you have one?
So great to see you doing some 'nids Vince - after assembling some 2003 'nid infantry (with the heads that come in 2 halves....seam line through the face is absolutely brutal and sucks a lot of fun out of the whole activity) I'd lost a lot of willpower to paint them up - now I'm all psyched to try this approach out and keen to paint again. Thanks for all your excellent videos. S.
Ive never had the balls to paint any of my Space Hulk. Watching this, the genestealers seem very achievable. I brought 10 x termigants for £9 on ebay this week and some cheap makeup brushes for xenos practice. I don't own any contrast paints but they seem the way to go here for sure! I love that Broodloard model!
Thanks for doing this in real time (excluding drying time)! It really helps emphasize the 'speed' in 'speed painting'. Too many videos cut to the end, which hides how long the job really took
I've been debating how to paint my genestealers for space hulk. My space crusade ones are just your regular blue and purple looking guys. They look great, but I wanted something different and this is definitely the way I'm going. I plan on doing the Terminators to display standard, but I need to be realistic about so many genestealers, and this definitely fits the bill! Absolutely awesome job 😊
RIght now my time to paint is short, so I'll rely on speedpainting techniques to get somewhere while building and painting my Nids, so this is great stuff. I think is also healthy to start doing speedpaint while starting paintings as it allows you to get decent results while still learning the more advanced stuff. Great work with that Genestealer
Thank you for this speed painting video. Also congrats on your Sigvald being featured on the Warhammer Community page! It really is a spectacular work!

Awesome video, I wish I had this about a year ago before I "speed painted" my bugs, but it has definitely inspired me to go back to them for some easy and quick upgrades to the paint job, thanks!
This looks sick. I’m gonna try it with a light blue skin tone instead of the white typical of Leviathan, but I’m looooooving that purple carapace you did. It looks so good! Thanks for the tips
I just came up with a similar technique a few days ago and yesterday assembled 60 hormagaunts... nice to see the key steps of my technique validated :D
Before I even watch this episode I just want to say I loved seeing your highlight on the Warhammer community page. Even against other such impressive artists your Sigvald made a statement. The mirror shield with showing its shape through the altered reflection still stands out against the others such as Sam's which displays amazing freehand work but fails to capture the nature of the shields curved surface. Keep up the great work as always, your skill is an inspiration (if not intimidating also) especially the ease in which you appear to apply your techniques.
I just ordered the 'nid combat patrol box for my boy. I'm going to use a simplified version of this process in guiding him through the painting process. He's actually a pretty good painter for a 5 year old, I suppose :). Thanks Vince!
Squidmar has an orc skin tutorial as well thats pretty well done, his videos aren't quite as clear as Vince's but he shows where to use glazes to get some more warmth in your greens using reds and purples and flesh tons around the nipples elbows etc where skin would be thinner.
Thanks for posting this video, Sir! Love the 'Nids! Incorporating inks into painting technique definitely garners great results! I'm thinking I need to enhance my existing Tyranids...
Excellent video. Painting kids is one of my favourite things because like you say you can do them relatively quickly yet get some super cool results. Loved the video, can''t believe I wasn't subscribed already
Showing up to this late with the news of Tyrranids dropping in 10th. Interested to see if maybe you could show any other color schemes? It seems like the bone / grey / white underskin is by far the easiest to speed paint but would be interested in seeing how you could possibly speed paint some darker skin tones. I realize changing the chitin color is just swapping out the purple for another, however you'd likely want to feather in less pinks etc on the muscles for say... a green chitin or something like this? Either way great stuff and thank you!
love to see this done to the old school genestealers , my god i still have nightmates about painting them lol that said i have 60 genestrealers to paint will try your method ,
Hey really, REALLY appreciate all your videos! One quick question! I tried following your technique for the purple carapace but I’m not getting as nice of a result. Roughly what are your ratios for thinning the purple lake ink or these Daler Rowney inks in general?
It varies, but quite a bit of water and a few drops of flow improver. One thing, make sure you are wicking off the excess into a paper towel and then moving your brush in the same direction as you want the "texture" to move.
I would likely use the same techniques. I would make the wing surfaces the same as the flesh here and the bones parts in between purple. I actually have a very old video on textured wings - ruclips.net/video/s8WjoL08fdk/видео.html
I painted those (from the SH box) a couple of years ago. Took me a few hours each and they did not look half as good. Which begs the question: WHERE WERE YOU, VINCE? 😄
"Tyranid anatomy is very confusing" Yes, they have both an exo and an endoskeleton, which would normally make them unable to move around but the plot need them to!
I was avoiding those Citadel contrast paints, because I did't want to fall into the lazinaess of painting everything with them, but that red you used is such a beautiful tone I'll have to buy it now.

Would be interesting to see your take, cause most videos focus on washes or contrast and then only the carapace with the streaky lines in more detail.
Hey Vince, great vid! Do you think this approach would scale up well for the bigger monsters, or are there any other considerations that should be kept in mind?
Hey Vince, I really appreciate your work. I have an idea for a hobby cheating video topic, something I personally have a problem with: overthinking. For example, I have played around with a color scheme and lore Backstory for my beastmen for 3 months, and can't settle on one thing, because I ever lose interest in it, or I have a new idea. Have you had a similar issue? If so, any tips how to overcome it?
It's a great idea for a video. My best advice is that eventually, you have to just settle on a scheme and accept that it won't be perfect. The best advice I can offer is to accept that this project, like any other will not be the best project you'll ever do, but it also won't be your last. Your next project will be another chance. You will always learn more and grow more from deciding and doing rather than thinking and planning. :)
I got the same feeling but for orks... you know the drill waargh flesh, biel tan green wash, warboss green, skarsnik green and that's only for the flesh !

@@VinceVenturella but in your video you didn't prime black that's the reason I was wondering if it would be too dark. I want them to be vibrant. Are you planing some leviathan nids painting tutorial?
Loving this technique. But I'm struggling a little bit to get a smooth result with the ink. Two questions. You say "thinned way down with flow improver". Any thoughts on the rough ink/improver ratio (drops?) I've got airbrush flow improver...and that's what I'm using. Any reason that would be an issue?
Probably 3 to 1 at least, butit will vary based on the intensity of what you are aiming for. You want to wick off the excess and try to apply a smooth even coat, moving the brush around and sopping up any excess. This is tough of course, there will always be some roughness to this sort of technique.
Sure, it is possible to go too far. You can have things that are supposed to be cloth with the level of contrast that would make them read as reflective metal. THere is a line, it just happens to be the case that most of the time people don't go near far enough.
How do you overcome painting a light colour like the white grey over the black downward facing parts of the model with a zenithal base coat. I always just end up with the bottom facings of the model being pure black still as the light colour doesn't cover well and just doesn't look realistic as a shadow as it should be a darker shade of your main base colour in this case being the white grey rather than pure black
That's a big question, the answer is lots of them, my nice detail bruses are Raphael 8404, but most of my work and what you saw here was with a generic synthetic brush, this video has the full story - ruclips.net/video/YTm_LgpOA0Y/видео.html
I know it's been a while, but my DW white ink just gets wiped out by whatever I put over it, even after a full day drying. Any ideas, other than varnish, ot just using Bold Titanium White?
Yeah, it's just not setting, because of your humidity, thinner or something else. So it's either switch to paint or primer, or give a good varnish after priming.
@@VinceVenturella using Vallejo airbrush flow improver in the purple ink, and undiluted white ink. Results with Pro Acryl white have been better. Thanks for the reply.

How long do this take, not including dry time? Looked like 10 minutes

A rarity for sure on my videos, but glad this was helpful. :)
