Deer Hunting Strategy | Iowa Public Land (Video)

- Part 3 of the "Planning A DIY Hunt" series. In today's video I’m sharing how I took the DIY out-of-state public land approach combined with freelance hunting strategy to fill a coveted Iowa tag. I had never scouted the public land where I had the best encounters of the trip and where I ultimately filled my buck tag. Some may say it’s a little crazy to draw the tag you’ve been waiting to draw for years and then rely on walking into places blind, and figuring the deer and the land out on the fly. Truth is, I didn’t have much choice considering I live 16 hours from where I was hunting…and I wasn’t there to take nature walks. I hope you enjoy leave any questions in the comments!

Planning hunts for the next 5 years to AL, ND, IA, KS, MT, and WY (not particularly in that order). I’ve been on a hunt in Quebec for whitetails and Nebraska for turkeys. Pretty excited about these next adventures.
Will you do more unscouted freelance hunts like this, or will you focus on more off season scouting
I scout when I can. But want to be prepared when I can't. Missouri hunt this year is shaping up to be all freelance.
I plan a combo of mostly prescouting in spring but I’m sure there will be some freelance
Clint, I believe you added two bullman steps to your platform strap. What strap did you use to do this?

Hey Clint. Very informative series man! I too am from PA and I’m planning a trip to Iowa in 2022 to basically do the exact same thing. E-scouting is all I have to go by because I don’t have enough vacation time to do a pre-scout. Absolutely loved the series. I can’t believe how many encounters you had w that buck. How many total?? The good news is you’re obviously doin something right to continuously put yourself in a good position. Congrats on your buck!
Paul Wakefield Thanks man. I had a total of 4 encounters with the same deer. Crazy for that to happen during rut. 3 of the 4 were in consecutive days
I am actually planning to go to Missouri too this fall. I haven't picked an area yet but looking NE, NW and south central. I plan to hunt it early in the season and then probably go back in right before the end of the first bow season which I believe will end the weekend before Thanksgiving. That will be closest to rut activity on the northern part of MO. Thanks for the videos as well as the podcasts!

Yes, it’s what I’ve been using for 3 seasons. No reason for me to go back. Old LW stands haven’t moved from hanging in my garage except to take pictures to sell!
@@truthfromthestand9994 lol. I have 3 lw stands one is very original one...assualt and alpha. Looking at latitude outdoors method saddle and mission platform which is a short lw but stout

Headed to NY and Illinois. Both for whitetail!
