I laughed out loud when that panel fell open and startled you. I've had that happen to me so many times. The universe has a sense of humor and it's not usually a kind one. Probably the closest I've come to needing new undershorts was dropping an armload of equipment off at a closed restaurant unit the company was using for storage. It had no power, was in a lousy neighborhood, and it was about 11PM. Alone and feeling my way down a long, dark hallway I stepped on one of those little bags of air that are used as packing material. It sounded like a gunshot and I think I levitated a few feet into the air. I had never before personally understood how people can actually soil themselves from fear.
Haha, dude... Those random jump scare moments where they time exactly with something you’re about to focus on... Happens to me on the daily. I have an account that has an air compressor right next to some giant Nh3 compressor packages. Every time I touch a valve or boot up the touch screen panel on one of the compressors, the moisture purge solenoid on the air compressor slams open and 120 Psi goes screaming into the floor drain. Haha, dude I hate it...

I have that happen at my work ALL the time.
I'll be getting ready to power up a piece of equipment, and either something gets dropped or a welder starts welding at the MOMENT I push start, causing me to panic-mash shutdown.
That exhaust fan sound like a lawn mower when it started. Lol 😂

With my electrician hat on, always, always have a solid ground wire to everything. Saves many a problem and maybe a serious shock.

Prewetting the condenser is 100% correct. It's like with new microfiber cloths: Initially, you really have to try to get them wet and it takes some time, but once they're wet, they happily soak up lots of water.

A lot of interesting comments below. No one would have expected to find all of what you found at one time. To quote you "polishing a turd" is pretty much what you had to accomplish with all the individual units you went into. I know the customer wouldn't let you but that exhaust fan needed to be tossed off the roof and a new one installed. I dealt with the public for years when working on imported autos and those people could drive me crazy sometimes with their stupid thinking. I always give you credit for doing the type of work you do.
Honestly i'm really glad you use sanitizer. There was an incident, back before covid, at the local convention center where people were getting sick from Listeria or some other bacteria that was traced back to the HVAC system. If memory serves me right, one person didn't make it and a good dozen where left with chronic lung issues.
Cooling towers have been associated with "Legionaires Disease".

I know that WTF moment. Iwas working in a small fire riser closet in an old parking garage and I was just reaching to flip on a disconnect for a booster pump on the Irrigation when the jenny compressor for the dry system kicked on, I flew put of that room. I should mention i had to straddle the compressor to reach the disconnect. I hate mech rooms.
The expression "can of worms" comes to mind.

Nothing scarier than being elbow deep in a furnace when the one next to it decides to backfire for no apparent reason, didn't find anything wrong with it and it hasn't done it since, pilot was lit, though I was elbow deep in the one because it couldn't keep the pilot lit and tripped the gas alarm which cuts out all 5 furnaces

Just discovered your videos. Thanks for making them available. My career was in electronics (ATC radar) and then railroad signaling but I always have been fascinated with HVAC equipment as in the late 60's I would tag along with my uncle on refrigeration calls. My BIGGEST shock is how poorly maintained everything is...you go for one problem and end up with a plethora of issues. You tackle them one at a time and do a great job. Lived in NORCAL for a few years in the USAF so I know how hot the summers are. Humidity or not, 100+ is just hard to deal with.
That first bit was what we call rapid disassembly.

Yeah, that stuck a nerve. Random sounds when I'm working on electrical things are not welcome.
I was changing a compressor and put the electrical connections off on a cold zone rack when the compressor for the system next to me came on and freaked me out. I must had jumped 8 feet backwards before I realized it was a different compressor.
Looking back on that is somewhat funny, but at the time, not so much so.
So satisfying when you get the Viper coil cleaner out and show all the dirt coming off 😀🌱 I like it when you use the yellow packet because I remember you said the blue one can etch the coil 😫👍
Great job! Always enjoy your videos. Copper work hardens. When it vibrates or moves it will get harder and break like you found. I'm an auto technician and sometimes wish I got my 609 cert... Keep up the good work!

I get that businesses (especially right now) are trying to keep costs down, but seriously. HVAC equipment is expensive. Have it maintained and checked semi regularly and it will last a lot longer and not fail when you most need it.

So how does the measure quick app give you air flow? Is it a calculation the app is making based on what your external static actually is vs the ESP you tell the app what your looking for??
I think it also looks at temperature drop. Depending where your supply air temperature probe is will affect the estimated CFM.
The "sanitizer" on a roof device is hilarious... but you keep on with your California self. I got outta that place for a reason.

That is a fact. Whenever you go to flip something on and someone drops a plate or slams something and you jump. Also I do not like the resilient mounts either on the exhaust. Once the fan gets caked up and throws it off balance it takes the rubber out pretty quick.

I have a Milwaukee shop vac which works nice to bring it up on the roof and just vacuum the sides of the unit.

Worked wonders for me, just make sure to size the pillow as they say to do, I learned the hard way.
Today's battle in Workplace Meteorological Warfare, First Shift came in and complained it was too cold in the building. (When we left, I had the lobby set to Auto, 72 min, 78 max.) Well, that's too cold, so they cranked the heat to 80, which is where I programmed the thermostat max limit (too many times they set it to 90, even in the midst of summer).
After a little bit of time, the restaurant temperature rose to 102 (while it was 30-32 outside). They had to call a tech because the heat would run nonstop unless they shut it fully off. Somebody won't admit they bumped into, and broke, one of the temp sensors.
Of course, this is all MY fault somehow, and I'm being threatened with a write-up (bring it on, I have quite a bit of "Employee Comments" to add!) and we've been told if we ever turn it down from 80 again, even if the people that WANT it that hot aren't there, locked boxes will be placed over the thermostats. Welcome to Kentucky Fascist Chicken, folks.

Chris, be xtra careful about any nerve damage. I was in the business 46 years, service for part of that and a union pipefitter. 46 years of putting tool belts and pipe etc on my shoulders I have headaches for the last 2 years, no cure. I had to retire because of it (I was about due anyhow) But it really sucks. Been to many doctors and all they do is push pain pills. Occipital Neurelgia. Not fun

Nothing wrong with ground from motor case to the unit assuming an EGC was run from the panel to the motor switch and grounded to the unit. A ground fault would still provide a path back, just not via the short wire run from motor to switch. 6 of one half dozen of the other.
Either way that motor play was no bueno.

it probably has a sewer smell in the restaurant,with all those exhausts and no make up negative psi,because of a 15 dollar bearing,that got greased 4 moths ago including the exhaust bearings and the wear on that belt u pm,bushing type motors the shaft moves in and out,vs ball bearing motors.i will stop about the rest,u said to comment.but i like the videos.go chris.

Whats USAs law on R22? As its outlawed in the UK
My understanding is that you can USE it, but you can't buy it new. Nobody's manufacturing it, and you can't use it on a new system.
But you're able to use the gas that you already have or recovered from other equipment to service the few systems that're still operating.
Finding new R22 to recharge your system is expensive and difficult, but because these systems are getting very old, owners are often opting to replace them with a modern higher-efficiency unit instead of repairing and/or recharging.
Disposing of the stuff from a decommissioned system is itself very tightly regulated, and understanding it would require more research than I feel like doing right now.

no they're not, ask any electrician what these do in overcurrent situations, they have a tendency to weld together and/or melt, in Europe with higher voltages they work ok because current is lower, but if you're pushing 15-20 amps through a small surface area contact, its gonna get warm, and you're gonna get some measurable voltage drop
@@elektrokinesis4150 that isn‘t true. We also drive 20 Amps through these connectors in Europe. They are certified to handle this current.
I can't see why you couldn't sell ultraviolet lights for rooftop units Especially with this Covid-19?
In his previous video (I don’t remember which), he said there is no endorsement from CDC saying UV light in HVAC equipment kills COVID, so he doesn’t want to make false claim.
@@yzhang8629 I understand what you mean but we install them in residential applications, why not inside RTU's ? Most residential customers don't like spending the money on expensive replacement bulbs after the 1st couple of years it was installed,but businesses like chain restaurants,retail stores where it would be part of their yearly HVAC budget sort of speaking to me would make sense. Btw, I wasn't directly suggesting the idea of uv lights to kill Covid-19, but to kill bacteria in general.We all know a dark cool moist environment harbors black mold, bacteria. If I owned a restaurant or bar/restaurant I would not only have these lights installed in the return filter bay,
I would have it as part of my maintenance plan to treat the coils with chlorine dioxide and slow release chlorine pads in the drain pans, quarterly and once every other year have the return bay and blower housing/wheel thoroughly vacuumed,cleaned and sanitized. It sounds like I'm overdoing it but I really don't think I am. This service could also include cleaning all supply and return registers and grills.
Whenever I go out to eat, this is one thing I look at when waiting to be served. If the returns have clumps of lint,debris, and supplies have black and brown stains I will not go there again.
To me, this tells me if the owner is serious about operating in a sanitary environment. What's nice about doing these services, its good work because aside from the cost of UV lights its mostly labor, AND.......Depending on how good your helper(s) / apprentices are, it could be a good job to send them on by themselves without a lead mechanic who could be at more of a technically involved service call.
There is nothing wrong with trying to drum up new ways of making more revenue for your business.
Cleanliness is BIG business.

@@howardharaway2259 Also has to do with the time it's exposed to the UV. I don't remember the time needed but it;s possible the air just blowing by will not have enough time to kill the airborne stuff. But yes, it will obviously help with the stuff on the coil and whatever else it shines on. Although, that is a factor too, it only can kill what it directly illuminates. So the one side of a fin may get the UV light, the side that doesn't can still harbor bacteria and viruses.

2nd .Stuff does accumulate on the surfaces in the return/filter bay. These surfaces are stationary and will get constant exposure to the uv lights.
3. My late dad had a funny saying that you can apply to many things.
"ITS LIKE THE FAT LADY THAT PISSED IN THE OCEAN,EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS" .
Kidding aside , maybe there needs to be case studies on this using a premium brand uv light kit and see if it kills enough bacteria for the investment to be worth it ?
To me, putting the UV Lights in equipment in restaurants is a no brainer to me. I know I'd do it if I owned a nice eatery. Anyway,thanks for the comments 👍
@@howardharaway2259 I'm sure companies have looked in to it and if it was viable I am sure it would have been done. But I will disagree on the keeping people busy and making money end. Sure, good to keep workers busy and of course making money, but only if that work is actually productive work and not just having them do stuff just to do stuff. If the UV light does turn out to be practical and actually effective, then by all means start installing them. But if it's just something that is more for show, then no, don't keep people busy installing inferior things. I have an electrical business and I tell customers outright if something isn't worth it. If they still want me to install something or do something and they insists I'll do it, but I try to save my customers money too. You get more respect and repeat customers that way. Plus, then when you do get the big ticket job they trust your call and go with it.
Why tape the wirenuts? The manufacturers dont recommend it, its not going to keep water out (use a outdoor rated box) and its a pain in the ass for us electricians down the line
