  • This is just a plain ol' tutorial on how to play the intro to "The Regulator" from Clutch.
    I felt compelled to do this one because of all the videos on RUclips that I have seen of people playing it incorrectly.
    I strongly believe that the intro guitar part was written in an alternate tuning (DADFAD) which is usually where the problems begin with attempting to play it in Drop D tuning ( DADGBE)
    In this video learn how to play the RIGHT notes in the WRONG tuning (DADGBE)

    Your video title is the one and only reason I will never click on another one of your videos. There was a 20 something fellow on AOL some years ago who weekly put out a condescending video telling everyone they were doing things wrong, brushing hair wrong, cracking eggs wrong, brushing your teeth wrong, etc. He didn't last long. And you may not garner many subscribers if you are going to put down people you have never seen before.

      Very interesting perspective. I guess I can only hope that most other people don't take it that way and understand that I only have good intentions. Either way, I appreciate the feedback! I will consider changing the title. Thank you for your honesty

    So I have my acoustic in the shop, and I got a little impatient so I pulled out my electric (which has a Floyd Rose), I paused the video when it said DADFAD and thought ok here we go... I spent 45 minutes trying to tune it and finally I did it... Then he said "I'm just in drop d".....

      @BreeceMatarazzo  3 года назад +1

      Noooooo!!! That sucks man. And I feel your pain. I love floating trems but damn they are a bitch to tune. Bust out a slide and have some fun in DADFAD man. Thanks for watching 🤘

    • @BreeceMatarazzo
      @BreeceMatarazzo  3 года назад +1

      To me it is identifiable as DADFAD just by listening to it. The syncopated arpeggio part sounds to be all open strings where as in the drop D tuning we are fretting the notes. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    • @BreeceMatarazzo
      @BreeceMatarazzo  2 года назад +1

      Good question. I think it'd be safe to assume that it is Blues Rock even though it doesn't fit the mold of traditional Blues Rock songs that would come to mind when thinking of the genre. But the foundation of the song is Rock with heavy Blues influence. Could maybe also pass for Southern Rock, but I think Blues Rock is more appropriate 😎

    Maybe you wrote the tab for this but I am sorry to say you got it wrong.
    You are right to say people tune wrong.
    You are very close to the proper tuning. And for the most part you have the right notes. But the tuning IMHO is actually open D tuning YOUR F is supposed to be an F# open D tuning is a CLASSIC old school roots/blues tuning along with open A and open G.
    So having said that when you tune it wrong you get the wrong string voicing and sorry to say the voicing matters alot not just the right notes. Voicing gives your blues flavor and attitude.
    Also you are not playing the proper bends on the melody notes.
    You are making the whole progression far more difficult to play than it actually is. I think if you change that one string to F# you will find you can do the arpeggios properly. If you take a few minutes and watch Neil play it you will see how it is done. You dont need a DAW to slow it down.
    In essence you may have the
    "Proper notes" but you have lost the whole feel and groove of the song when the voicing is wrong.
    Blues alot of the time is all about feel and voicing of notes that are played not the note itself. I'm sure if you listen closely to the album and watch yourself play it you will find even your "correct notes" or "proper" way to play the progression is still as you say "not quite right"
    However I will say it is a great attempt to get the song "right" but you're not quite there and your tuning is making it far more difficult to play. I urge you to watch Neil live and then try open D tuning (F#) not open D minor.
    And I dont believe it is an A minor chord played that you referred to it as I believe it is an A7 arpeggio.
    Again a standard blues progression using 7th chords.
    Try it and see
    You will be able to bend the notes in the "proper" places as they were written giving it the feel and flavor that your tuning is lacking and hey it will be far easier to play
    Cheers
    Great video and you got the notes son all you need is the mojo!
    Thanks

    I'm gonna be the Devil's advocate.
    You make the bold claim that you're playing the right notes, just in the wrong tuning. You're pretty close, I'll give you that, and a lot closer than a lot of other covers, but you're missing the slight bends in the "B" section of the intro. I do genuinely believe they're one of the big reasons the song is as good as it is and one of the reasons it's able to pull so many people in. You're not doing those bends, you're just playing the notes straight on which doesn't create the tension that it needs.
    Other than this, and I know I'm 3 years late, great playing, it's just those bends that get to me. I only had to make this comment based on the bold claim that you're playing it right, which you're very close in doing.

    • @BreeceMatarazzo
      @BreeceMatarazzo  Год назад +1

      That is actually a very good observation and you are correct, and if I had played it on a steel string guitar I probably would have incorporated those bends. But unfortunately, as I'm sure you're probably aware of, it takes twice the bend on a nylon string to get a pitch difference so I think I didn't even attempt to since it still wouldn't have worked in my favor.
      Also, some might argue that those bends are just a stylistic thing and irrelevant to the notation of the song, however I would probably agree more with your view on it, even though I could see both view points.
      Either way, my main objective was just to point people in the right direction and let them decide how to play it.
      Shame I don't have a steel string though lol
      Thank you for watching and sharing your feedback

    Hey man, awesome tutorial! One little note: On the last arppegio with the alternative A chord, there is a little note at the end before you play the riff again:
    -----------------------0------
    -------------------------------
    ----------2-------------------
    ----------------5------------- This is how you play it most of the time
    ----0-------------------------
    -------------------------------
    ------------------------------
    -------------------------------
    ----------2-------------------
    ----------------3------------- This is how you play it the last time before going into the next riff. Just hold the 3 a little longer
    ----0-------------------------
    -------------------------------
