a good film makes you forget just how much effort and detail has gone into the design. Her was effortless to watch and yet so much attention to detail went into creating such a great aesthetic film
I just love the retro-look of Her! I always thought it was a much more realistic vision of technology in the future than all those hyper-modern ones. Anyways, you did a great job of breaking down Her's world and articulating why it is so inviting, thanks!
I think it spoils the general themes of the movie but nothing specific about the plot. Should be fine to watch, although perhaps a completely clean slate when watching the movie would be preferable.
“Which is why 10, 20, or even 50 years from now, ‘Her’ won’t look like a dated vision of the future, just a charming alternate reality where people cleaned up their lives, and finally got their shit together.” Devastatingly beautiful.
Same, but I realized Channel Criswell already did a great take on Her's screenplay and thematics so it's a win-win for us viewers. Check out the video essay "Her - Needs and Desires" if you already haven't!
The specific colours. The design choices in the office. The stuff with the mirrors to let real sunlight into the (green screen) set. - Thats all stuff you can see in the movie. Stuff, you can feel but not put a finger on. That's film-making, they don't have in those marvel blockbusters, for instance .
If you haven't seen his short film, "Scenes From the Suburbs", I highly recommend it. Not quite as well-known as his big-screen stuff, but it's equally as beautiful and moving.
the biggest thing I really noticed from Her is the color palette. all the desaturated colors with the "bright" pinks and reds popping out and giving the film some color -- even if they're toned down too. I really like it for some reason. it feels like Theodore's own personal color palette
I never saw this movie as depcting a bright future. With the subtle polution covering the city and how lonely the characters are portrayed i always felt a connection between some parts of my life and what was being show to me on the screen. But you are right, the film doesn't say those things are bad and instead tries to find the good in them(not the pollution). I guess i need a second viewing.
I posted this elsewhere in the comments. Figured it applied to your comment so here it is if you're interested: "Her" is a dystopian vision of the future though. The main character is lonely and feels unfulfilled. He desires deep human relationships but is unable to achieve this desire. Instead, he supplements human contact with artificial contact masquerading as human. The AI is clever, and subtle too. It accurately--eerily--mimics human interaction. The protagonist doesn't outgrow the AI, the AI outgrows him; it evolves beyond him in the end. While you can look at the film as optimistic about the future, in my opinion this represents a poor surface reading. "Her" is frightening precisely because the protagonist finds meaning where there is none. He is changed by a romantic relationship with a machine that lacks agency (but is very good at mimicking agency). This factor makes "Her" more frightening than any 1984-style movie ever could hope to be
It's how we interact with people and the relationships we forge that determines our present mental condition, which will feed into our collective futures. Be excellent to each other. Or something...
I don't know how you can say that Samantha doesn't have agency. The entire second half of her arc is about her choices, her choice to broaden herself, her choice to form relationships with other humans and OSs, and ultimately her choice to leave Theodore. Also I think you missed that while Theodore struggles to forge romantic relationships over the course of the film, he doesn't lack for deep human relationships in his life. Amy and him are steadfast friends, caring for and concerned for one another. I don't think it's a mistake that the film ends with the two of them sharing a meaningful moment together watching the sun rise over the city. Yes, the film depicts a world that is imperfect, but it is no more dystopian than the world of today or yesterday.
I thinks so too. I really find this movie sad and somewhat depressing, I never thought it was optimistic and the set supports this. He lives in a world where people are so emotionally disconnected that people pay him to create fake emotional letters to their closest loved ones, and it's a job he seems to have no passion for. He is unable to connect with women to the point where he blows off a lifelong partner Rooney Mara and an interesting, super intelligent Olivia Wilde because he can't be out of the comfort zone offered by the low pressure of his video game and robot girlfriend. His apartment is horribly lifeless and looks like some kind of furniture catalogue. The outdoor areas seem to constantly have a smog floating over them. It's honestly baffling that someone would see this and think it represents a hopeful future any more than other science fiction movies.
God I miss this. Just like that a creator with a style and passion for video essays bursts on to the scene and just as quickly as it started it ended. 8 months still no new uploads. But I'll be waiting, oh Kaptin my Kaptin.
I didn't even realize that they did half of the city building stuff they did. This really opened my eyes (as usual for your videos) and I'm gonna have to watch Her again Keep it up
Afonso Lucas too long? what about the world is a beautiful place and I am no longer afraid to die ...and they will know us by the trail of the dead The plot to bomb the eifel tower I would set myself on fire for you actually, youre right. too long.
I've loved the fashion in Her since I first saw it, I think it remains the only movie that has a genuinely believable aesthetic throughout and you just perfectly explained why. Brilliant video as always.
One of the things I loved about the portrayal of the future is there was almost no judgment. He told his friends he was in a relationship with an OS they supported him and was even happy for him. They were there when he needed them but they did not try to dictate his life choices or shame him for them. It was a live and let live mentality that I wish was a reality.
With you talking about a more positive future it got me thinking. You need to do a video on Star Trek! Gene Roddenberry's vision of a peaceful world that explored civilizations would make a great video.
it must be said: this guy deserves AT LEAST 10 million subs on youtube, AT LEAST. The level of quality and craftsmanship of these videos, and his thoughtful analyses, is simply unmatched on the whole platform.
Damn, this was a great channel. Seriously, Kap made high-quality vids at a rapid pace. I don't blame him if he got burned out after making some great content, but i do miss it all. Idk if youtube just wasn't worth it (which tbh is totally fair) but it was great watching mini-documentaries on topics no one else was touching.
I didn't understand this point, their lives are still very much messy. He has yet to sign his divorce papers, goes on a super sketchy date, gets super emotional over an AI, etc, etc. Even Amy Adam's life is a mess. They're also pretty depressed throughout much of the movie.
Right, but at the end of the movie it gives hope for a better future because after the OSes all disappear into the ether, Theodore and Amy go to the rooftop and console each other after losing essentially their significant others. Because they share that connection they are able to not only comfort each other but understand the trauma they are dealing with. The movie gives us the impression that Theodore has emerged a better person after the events of the film despite still being in a depression.
Funny enough, this is exactly the same vibe I get from your channel and some of my other favorite channels on RUclips. That feeling of reclining in my computer chair, possibly enjoying a drink of some kind. It's that warm, cozy feeling that you get out of simple pleasures and I think that it's great that you and other channels can capture that with things as simple as calming music and smoothly edited videos.
For real you always have the best takes. Like, you talk about things I've always thought I'm very familiar with, but then call out details I've never noticed. This one is a classic.
Thought of this channel recently. I hope KaptainKristian is doing well. This is hands-down one of my favorite online creators and I hope you're out there continuing to make beautiful art.
This is the first comment I've posted on youtube in a very, very long time. Your videos are amazing to watch. They're filled to the brim with information I wouldn't have even bothered to think about. I LOVE IT. THIS IS WHY WE HAVE KAPTAINS GUARDIAN. HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
I'm happy with how you start at Production Designer when telling this story. Lost in Translation is good, eh? I have to check it out now I know how it relates to greater cinema.
Wonderful video. I really adore Her, and I remember loving the vision of the future presented in it. The color palette, soft music, "non-slick" technology, and even the jobs that existed all served to deliver a future that I could actually see myself living in. It made me hope for that.
I have to say, you are one of the only channels I know on RUclips with such consistent amazing content. Every video I have clicked on from you I have watched until the end because of how entertaining it is, I can tell you put a lot of effort into these videos and I appreciate that.
This video is truly is a great work of art. I always come back and rewatch it, its just that good. Something about flow, the description, the animations, it just works fine. And the last words really hit you. " just a charming alternate reality where people cleaned up their lives and got their shit together ".
If he did indeed stop making videos, I can't wait to stumble upon it again a couple of years from now and revisit them.Every single one is life changing.
I absolutely loved “Her” for these reasons. It felt real. Had me thinking about how much could be possible with such a brilliant mind sitting beside me every day and socializing with me. Imagine sitting down and making a video game together. Working towards the whole immortality thing together. A future like this is actually feasible, and we could be a part of it.
You're so brilliant, and I trust your vision more than any other RUclipsr. the way you purvey your understanding of art is so linguistic not only from your tone but the visual aids that accompany it. Im so glad you exist and can continue to inspire and create content this thought provoking. Much Love always Dan & Dane.
I've always loved this movie for reasons that I was not able to explain to others. The analysis of this vintage nostalgia that is the core of Her was eloquently explained and revealing to me personally. Thank you for your work kaptainkristian...you are one hell of a RUclipsr.
It was like 2.5 years since I watched this video but I finally watched this film It's as emotionally impacting as this video made it seem Better late than never, I guess?
Your videos are so expertly crafted and intelligent, somehow you always manage to hit me in the spots where I'm the nerdiest. Thank you so much for helping me to indulge in that side of myself.
I keep checking back to your channel, thinking maybe the notifications are broke. Your videos are polished, and content rich, so I wouldn't be surprised that it may take many weeks to create a video. Having said that, it's been 4 months, and I miss your content
Found your channel a few says and have been watching them all day, I can tell you really care about what you are writing and the analysis is fascinating and awesome. Your videos on Batman and the ones on Superman made me watch the cartoons again and really kinda fall in love with those things again. Thanks
I fucking love the editing and the overall quality in your videos, their almost art by themselves, and that's just talking about the videos, because the information in them is not just good and well delivered, but mind-changing as well. Amazing work
Where are you? I love watching your videos and only just now realized that you hadn't put out a new one in over eight months! I only subscribed about three or four months ago, or else I would have realized that you were gone a lot sooner. I hope that you are doing well.
I literally screamed when my notification says 'Kaptain Kristian' (that's usual) and 'Her' together! I love this movie so much. It's both painful and gorgeous.
Why nothing on the plot? It's one of the beautiful visual movies ever, but the plot and philosophy of the film is amazing and heart breaking yet satisfying
I miss the video essays, and the smooth and delivery of the information, and the expert scripts that comes from your videos. The way you add emotion and passion while giving in depth look of what makes a topic amazing. The superman video is a video i always look back on, and help me form my own video essay for my final grade for E.L.A . You put so much work into your video's I am always stunned by the quality, and that is what RUclips needs right now. Your fans want you to come back kaptainkristian.
Damn you KaptainKristian you make a video on a movie I haven’t seen yet so I can’t watch the video because you deemed this movie worthy of a video it must be great so I have to wait to watch the movie before this
Chris Higgins absolutely zero spoilers, would probably make you appreciate it more when you watch it! It's mainly about the production design and no mention of the plot👌 definitely a great movie though
God damn those last few lines made me tear up, this channel has always been great but this video has got to be his best work yet. The world needs more people like you in it.
Dear KaptainKristian. It;s been too long since your last video. I adore you content and want you to keep going even if you have other projects. These videos are inspiring trips down information avenue. And I need another hit. Please come back. p.s. I'm buying one of your dope shirts.
Keep up the fantastic videos! I've loved every single one of them. I can't wait to see what you do next. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication. And happy birthday. You're my favorite RUclipsr ever!
Hey, just wanted to drop a positive comment your way! I love your videos they always leave me feeling happy to live in the time we do. Thanks for your dedication and hard work I can't wait to see where you take this channel.
I’m not too sure why , but the atmosphere , the music , and your voice makes me incredibly emotional ... I cry when I’m happy and I cry when I’m sad. I love you, man. Happy Birthday; I hope you’ve had a fantastic week! Thanks for bringing me these amazing videos
Thanks for that little off-side about Her and Lost in Translation being companion pieces. I've never thought about it, but they are in a way. I look forward to rewatching them back to back while keeping that in mind
a good film makes you forget just how much effort and detail has gone into the design. Her was effortless to watch and yet so much attention to detail went into creating such a great aesthetic film
Could say exactly the same for Kaptainkristian too

Like Stories of Old love your videos
I agree with your sentiment. What an aesthetically pleasing movie. So much so that I wished to live in its version of the future.
I just want to ask : I haven't seen the movie yet, but is the story spoiled in this video?
I think it spoils the general themes of the movie but nothing specific about the plot. Should be fine to watch, although perhaps a completely clean slate when watching the movie would be preferable.
k14pc Ok thanks !
“Which is why 10, 20, or even 50 years from now, ‘Her’ won’t look like a dated vision of the future, just a charming alternate reality where people cleaned up their lives, and finally got their shit together.”
Devastatingly beautiful.
although he said it 5 years ago, I confirm it today.
I was expecting an in-depth analysis of the script or thematic material, but talking about the visual element was a fantastic surprise. Well-done.
Same, but I realized Channel Criswell already did a great take on Her's screenplay and thematics so it's a win-win for us viewers. Check out the video essay "Her - Needs and Desires" if you already haven't!
Why were you expecting that? The video title is literally "building" a "beautiful" future.
The specific colours. The design choices in the office. The stuff with the mirrors to let real sunlight into the (green screen) set. - Thats all stuff you can see in the movie. Stuff, you can feel but not put a finger on. That's film-making, they don't have in those marvel blockbusters, for instance .
Mr. F Kristian usually focuses on an aspect of a film/franchise/property that most don't really think about, but is nevertheless important
spike jonze is insanely talented

If you haven't seen his short film, "Scenes From the Suburbs", I highly recommend it. Not quite as well-known as his big-screen stuff, but it's equally as beautiful and moving.
he was the director, the cinematographer was Hoyte

The superman video is a video i always look back on, and help me form my own video essay for my final grade for E.L.A . You put so much work into your video's I am always stunned by the quality, and that is what RUclips needs right now. Your fans want you to come back kaptainkristian.

Ease off on the worshiping fam. Just do you.
Chris Higgins absolutely zero spoilers, would probably make you appreciate it more when you watch it! It's mainly about the production design and no mention of the plot👌 definitely a great movie though
It's a good movie.
The video essay paradox.
You verbalized my appreciation of "Her" without me even fully comprehending why I enjoyed this movie so much. Bravo!

It's been 6 months Kristian! Where are you? :(
Thanks for that little off-side about Her and Lost in Translation being companion pieces. I've never thought about it, but they are in a way. I look forward to rewatching them back to back while keeping that in mind
