I think it'd be interesting to leave those lifting point holes in the frame even after the restoration, as a bit of it's history. Also, lifting points are useful for a machine that size.
A nut and bolt restoration would be cool but a complete how to video series on returning a locomotive to operation really would be a good series to do😊
You should name it "The Little Ruston That Could" because it spent all this time being not appreciated and now here it is getting the respect and care it deserves.
Massive congratulations to you guys from all of us at the Croatian Railway Preservation Society. Your videos encourage us to keep up our efforts. We can't wait to see the Rustons back in action. 😃
Lawrie, if you weren't a genuine guy who obviously had a passion for what you did I doubt no one would have donated. Its all because of your enthusiasm that people did and will probably continue to do. 👍🤗
Lawrie can I just tell you why this happened.....its because your presentation is such a great watch. Every time. Whether on your own or with your mates. May I also add a particular bit of feedback you may be surprised at..... I assist a chap locally once a week who is 100% blind. This doesn't stop him being a keen rail enthusiast, and he has a 100ft gauge 1 garden railway too. But what you may not realise is your audio description when you do pre start / firing/ driving videos actually works amazingly for the blind. You describe everything well and you are a good speaker. So a big thank you from Peter and myself. G
Agree Lawrie always comes across as sincere, genuine and likeable. Compared to other train video people aka the one from ALL THE STATIONS who I won't name.
I really wish in the US we were just as crazy for railway preservation as it is over there. But getting to see all this preservation work on youtube is a true privilege to see :D

Hi, Happy to help with Spanner and Hammer help. Seriosely well done sir. I'm a reasonable engineer and Steam Fireman - Happy to help restore this Well done
What amazes me is the engine lasted that long in a scrap yard and not weighed in..I wonder if someone hand been waiting for this day instead of scrapping many years ago. Good luck Lawrie.
Running for the 100K special? All jokes aside what a wonderful thing to achieve. And the “What have we done” at the end sums it all up 😂 I’ve always wanted to rescue something myself out of a scrapyard and one day I will!
Guess SC Fabrications can now add 'hauling a locomotive' to their gallery :) Great to see that it not only worked out with saving the poor Ruston from the scrapheap, but also got both Rustons a budget to spruce them all up. Looking forward to seeing the restauration process and first time it moves again on rails under its own power :)
C O N G R T U L A T I O N ! ! ! Another document of former transportation is saved from the scrap! I wish you best success with the recovery and surely I like to watch the buidup of this nce little loco!
Last time I saw it about three years ago there were a couple of Diesel shutters in a corner of a scrapyard at Shipley in Yorkshire just before you entered the station on the line from Bradford Forster Square; they had been there for many years.
Well done everyone; well done for helping a fellow Suffolk man achieve his dream, speaking as a fellow Suffolk local of Lawrie. I mention to my own family my idealism of owning a full-size steam engine, no matter what it was, and they said I should be part of an owning group. Either way I'd try it, but you made Lawrie happy and I appreciate that. Regards, Samuel.
Desr Lawrie! I know this feeling! I had it every time we did a small diesel working vehicle just saving from the cutting torch. In Würzburg/Germany we loaded 3 vehicles and then went to the other side of the station, where the others had been already cut in parts to get some spareparts for ours. But the greatest adventure we had in the following time! We went home with two vehicles upon the functional other 2 and then returned on the mainline, about 100km to Hanau/Main with maximal speed (about 60km/h), with only 3 stops on the siding! That was my best railroad- adventure until now ! ! !
Wonderful. Yes I have been saving my beer money since last August and look what all of us have donated towards. Looking forward to lots of young and old getting their hands dirty in preserving her. Love David and Lily. We have met up with you in person. On the MIDDY.
Great news another Ruston too join her sisters . Well done to you Laurie for finding her & Rescuing her with the help of your loyal followers . Ruston are great little engine I’m looking forward to see the little 48 coming back to life. Hopefully I’ll be able chip in a little in a couple of weeks . The best part is you have now got enough to get started on restoration. Hopefully you can source what you need easily
It goes to show you that kindness and excitement about other’s projects is alive and well in the world. (And your heavy lift tow service is run by a bunch of legends!)
I love your enthusiasm, I’ll see what I can put aside payday to sort you out a little more. Just proves, if you never try you’ll never know. A wise man told me , help those who are willing to help themselves.
Seeing it leave the scrapyard was a truly beautiful sight. Had to go back and up my donation. I'm actually on holiday in Norfolk during the summer, shall have to try and swing past the railway and see if I can catch a glimpse.
Just a thought. This engine is probably missing a lot of bespoke parts that will no doubt be hard, if not impossible to find. Perhaps you could find a similar engine that is complete, then photograph and measure the missing parts off that, and then post that information somewhere. Because i'd be willing to bet your community is full of my fellow shed-dwellers that could manufacture a lot of those missing parts. For instance i used to work as both a welder and blacksmith in my youth, have restored a bunch of vehicles in my years (currently i'm doing a 65 Caddy CDV, a Mk1.5 Transit bus and a 205 GTI) and i'd love to make something for this machine and send it to you for free. Bet i'm not alone in that either. Maybe it's a logistically dumb idea. But it would be awesome! Anyway thanks for doing this restoration! Preserving and learning history is important, and fun!
It's all good big boy, the tears were showing us how seriouse it was to you so it was worth it all the way! Just a big loco fan with the chance to get a nice bit of loco, how could we not do that?
Sounds good to me as an Australian i can give some recommendations such as the Bennett Brooke Narrow gauge railway in Perth Western Australia or the Toodyay Miniture railway in the small town of Toodyay western Australia
This is truly awesome! I'm so proud I was able to contribute even a little bit. I can't wait to watch the story of its restoration and seeing it run one day
I just your enthusiasm, excitement and joy. Beauty is really in the eye of the beholder... in the imagination. Looking forward to its journey from imagination (back) into tangible visibility.
Well done to you and all your viewers who contributed. I can’t wait for video updates on the restoration. Is that the same railway that your Ruston resides ?
I love the idea of seeing it pass by on the trailer of a lorry, the thought of some young kids may pass by and be in awe of an engine off to be repaired, no matter how fantastic that may be I wish it be true.
A once in a lifetime experience for sure. And,your gratitude is nice to see. Your gonna need every penny you can lay your hands on , and a ton of work to put that back. Keep at it! K,,,,
Far better recyled as a restored engine than bean tins and paperclips! Now its saved and moved, that's the east part over. I look forward to the rebirth of a running machine!
so awesome to see hope to be able to contribute to this project and her return to working order as soon as i can really apreciate you fronting this project awesome
From the way that the loco had stayed in the scrapyard for so long, and that scrapyards only make money by breaking scrap down and selling it for recycling, or selling items whole for re-use, it would seem that the owner of the scrapyard didn't really want to break it up and was always hoping that someone would buy it. Otherwise the loco would have been broken up and recycled many years ago. So well done to the scrapyard owner for keeping it around long enough for it to be bought for restoration.
I think it'd be interesting to leave those lifting point holes in the frame even after the restoration, as a bit of it's history. Also, lifting points are useful for a machine that size.

Take a deeper look. What's going on in Illinois? Wisconsin has the SOOLINE 1003.
Not really... We didn't even preserve any of the Falklands Carriers. Which is annoying as I would have liked to seen Ark Royal as a museum.
