I'm not sure which is more impressive! The sound of the mighty Ruston firing up, the mighty Lawrie firing up, or the helpfulness of the mighty Matt! :-)
As much as I like your little diesel engine, I am fascinated by the apparent saddle tank locomotive parked behind your engine. Could you please introduce us to that locomotive at some time in the near future? Please?
Welcome to the world of loco maintenance Lawrie. Nothing is easy to get to and the parts are usually heavy. And they say diesels are easy to fix. Yeah right!
If anyone is wanting a 4mm or 7mm scale etch brass plates of Lawrie's Loco the 247 Developments have them in stock & 30% of the sales go to help with the loco
Lawrie is a very happy man! The bigger Ruston locomotives are air start. There is a donkey engine to build up the air, it gets started first with a starting handle!
THE IRONY? Yes, many moons ago down in Buckfastleigh. The Chief Engineer came up with rubbing blocks fitted to 4555 and run her up and down to profile the wheels! FAST FORWARD several years and there is the best facility for new rim fitting and re profiling in England where everyone sends their wheels. 36.8 Well done Lawrie. David and Lily deep in 5 inch gauge wheels off various locomotives. And yes we have a battery driven BEAST.
WOO HOO! good to see her running again and when you test run her i understand you will be able tp gp another 500 yds i beleive? Could do with some warmer weather rhough!!
I related to your reaction when it fired up, also the various ones about the electrical. I felt both when I worked on repairing a tractor I loved and that my father had damaged - an Allis Chalmers CA that he had tried to jump start from a late 1980s pickup (6V vs 12V...) I was also nodding knowingly to your grumblings about what it was to work on that. When it came to wrenching on our CA, D17, WD-45, 170 or 175? Easy peasy. The 180? Oh hell no. I'm having to pull the starter was a perfect example - everything with the 180 was a single bolt mount whereas the 180 had a 3 bolt flange and two of those in a convoluted location
I’ve been watching your channel since lawrie goes loco ep1 and when you started buying tractors and everything and to see you have your own loco is amazing well done!
Great Job guys. Thanks for saving these great pieces of our history. Some may not agree, but I look at the heart and soul of Machinery and they do deserve a second chance.
I genuinely reckon you could build a 48DS or 165DM in a garage. Would maybe have to buy the wheels and engine block, but the rest of it seems so simple in construction
Lawrie. New sub. Just watched from Florence Arizona USA. I felt the excitment of starting the engine for the first time. Thanks for sharing. How about a steam boat? Retired locomotive engineer Mike.
At the 1-year point, that's probably where I'd have gone to a parts store and hunted for a truck starter that's got similar gear teeth and welded up an adapter plate lol Or at least tried bump-starting it with another locomotive, since it's a diesel-mechanical and not hydraulic or electric and that's how all the hand-start locos end up being started anyway Also, I think the "leak" in the rad is probably the drain valve, it's gotten a deep freeze over the last year so the railway probably drained all the radiators that just had water instead of coolant
They 'have' adjustable wrenches with a 'hammer' built-in here across the Pond, it's a 'Miners' wrench that's very popular with you guessed it, Miners! The company is: Rastall Nut and Bolt Company, out of Sudbury, Ontario, Canada.
Shocking, nice to know im not the only one who uses the saying "lets get ...... i said, it'll be fun i said" oh how that saying always fines a away to put me smack bang back in to reality.
The best way to fix a rattle in a vehicle is to take a stack of printer paper with you and fold it into a wedge and jam it where the noise is coming from
I feel this. There are a lot of locos getting round in Australia here with bits of CAN form folded up and stuffed between dash panels and in window latches. Hell, the other day i even had to close a page of my memo book in the door of a loco that was barely latched shut to keep it from swinging open every 5 minutes on a 300km journey at night. 😂
I might be mistaken but I didn't notice whether the cold start was activated. I used to work on Ruston engines decades ago and in particular the 6VPH in the bigger Hornsby shunters plus the 4YE. I used to have a booklet with all the Ruston engine limits and fits and other critical data. I threw it away when I had a clear to in the 90's!! Would have been some use to enthusiasts that are now running these locos.
Lawrie,a jobs not job unless you have a jam jar full of bits and bobs left over! Where your ears burning yesterday,ws talking to a 360 driver and he said he d done a job at the Mc Alpine residence. He said you wouldn't believe he's got a railway and a station. I said I would! And pointed him in your direction!! Are you going to Tinkers Park show? Great vlog, keep them coming.
How's the Ruston? Do you want to review X loco? Is Jupes still working? Are you going to do more filming in America? What's your favourite steam engine?
Lawrie's impression of a mad scientist when the Ruston fires up is priceless
I was a little exited
The best part of Matt's camera work is the commentary winding Laurie up!
We all have a friend like matt
Matt is not the friend Lawrie needs, but is the one Lawrie deserves.
lol
ITS ALIVE! I knew Sir William wouldn't let you down. Now you can definitely get Hornby to do a model of it.
For the new Hornby 00 narrow gauge?
@@benholroyd5221 I think they do a 00 ruston
@@benholroyd5221 it's standard gauge.
Of course we’d watch this! The old 48 is great!
Edit: Excited Lawrie sounds like a little kid lol
I laughed so hard at his reaction when the engine finally fired. 😆😆
Like a little kid on Christmas Eve :D
That sound of pure joy Lawrie made when she started actually warms my heart! So happy to see the engine back up and running!
I'm not sure which is more impressive! The sound of the mighty Ruston firing up, the mighty Lawrie firing up, or the helpfulness of the mighty Matt! :-)
Peak Matt
The pure joy you could see and hear in Laurie when she started is so wholesome! So glad she runs still!
"Lawrie's metal babies"
😂
I'm happy to see that it runs now
Is that a belt squealing? Nope that a grown man... A happy man! Gj :)
As much as I like your little diesel engine, I am fascinated by the apparent saddle tank locomotive parked behind your engine. Could you please introduce us to that locomotive at some time in the near future?
Please?
The Bagnall may appear at some point in the future
17:24 I thought that was a turbo for a second, but no, it's just pure unaltered joy!
So very glad to see your back on line a welcome seight and surprise!! Long Island New York USA!
There is smoke, there is engine noise there is Lawrie making strange noises - the beast runs
Always a great moment when an engine fires up after any work has been done, fantastic!
"Do you need an adult?" I lost it at this point.
The answer was likely yes
Matt’s commentary makes this video even better! Proper double act going on here! Love it!
Welcome to the world of loco maintenance Lawrie. Nothing is easy to get to and the parts are usually heavy. And they say diesels are easy to fix. Yeah right!
adjustable hammer - this had me smiling all the next day - great stuff thank you!
That brought a tear to my eye seeing that sense of pure joy when Lawrie fired up the loco...
"Why don't you get it then"
I don't know why but I burst out laughing at that.
the pure joy on Lawries face when it starts
Such a cute little engine, delighted to see it alive again 😀
You made putting the motor in look as difficult as oiling up an austerity 😂. Congratulations on 36.6k!
How can you not love that little Ruston!
Well done! Great to see the 48 burst back into life!
Way to go Lawrie! We love your Ruston! I bought the Hornby one because of your little engine!
well done I'm glad it now starts
nice to see it runing after all this time
The return of the ruston

Thank you for sharing the 36.6k special! :-)
I love the videos Laurie and I can’t wait to see more of the Ruston and the rest of the fleet!!
Enjoyed this, thanks L&M!
Great Video! Thanks for sharing. Greetings from Germany.
So wonderful to hear your 48 running again.
Like it, simple but effective, thats all you need to do the job.
Cracking little machine, enjoy!😉👊👍

Youve done a wonderful job Lawrie. That Ruston looks good as new!
Lawrie makes very interesting noises when he's very exited. XD
I genuinely reckon you could build a 48DS or 165DM in a garage. Would maybe have to buy the wheels and engine block, but the rest of it seems so simple in construction
17:26 at this moment, the little boy inside Lawrie came out when he started the loco. :)
McAlpine is alive. Now you can organise the Lawrie locomotive tour. Just need to patch the radiator up first and sort the other issues out.
Very British: Not minding the miserable weather! :D
Lawrie. New sub. Just watched from Florence Arizona USA. I felt the excitment of starting the engine for the first time. Thanks for sharing. How about a steam boat? Retired locomotive engineer Mike.
We've hopefully got a steam boat lined up to do!
Brilliant Lawrie so glad you got the starter working. What's going to be the 40k special?
Well done, your excitement was great to watch😊
Of course she was going to start.
40K special, The Ruston 48 has her wheels re profiled.
At the 1-year point, that's probably where I'd have gone to a parts store and hunted for a truck starter that's got similar gear teeth and welded up an adapter plate lol

I’d like to think some of the guys there that day saw Lawrie furiously working on his engine, said “Let’s tease him a bit,” and busted out the 165.
So is it a case of getting the wheels turned or does it need new tyres?
Overjoyed mate running around in the pouring rain 2021: colourised
Fantastic 👍🏻 Sounds sweet 🤣
quick question lawrie.. does the ruston have a cab heater? somewhat random i know but I am curious
That was great. True joy.
Glad you got it running.
I am not a fan of trains however, your reaction was priceless.
Just so nice to hear it run again
Good morning @@lmm
I don't think I've seen anyone more happy than that.
It was a good day
@@lmm It did seem nice. Just some rain though.
Great work. 🔨🔧🔩
Thanks so much for sharing. 😎👌🏼
Notice how whenever this engine appears subs goes up very fast
At least the Ruston will have good news to be told in the next what's broken now video
yay a new video over the ruston
Yay Indeed!
“ITS ALIVE! ITS ALIVE! RUSTONSTEIN!”
This is interesting to watch. Poor Lawrie. I'm sure he'll get it fully sorted eventually...

Hello from Indiana, Thanks for another great video from LMM. What was the little tank engine behind the Ruston? have we saw it on LMM?
still, i am glad that it is alive and also it is oke and not scrapt away :)
The way he said “ITS ALIVE!!!” 😂😂
Almost like the starter for my 1940 Allis Chalmers B.
U know u love something when u repair in the rain.
I am nothing, if not graceful!! 😂😂😂 ohh it is these moments of magic I watch LMM for. I also appreciate Matts proper British cyclical reply..
Cynical?
@@benholroyd5221 auto correct slipped in there and decided I was using the wrong word. Me being lazy missed it!! Thanks
@@davidbutler7602 that's why I call it auto incorrect.

Lawrie, you never mentioned the oil pressure again. Is it a problem?
It's the gauge. I hope. It bunged up before, so I'm guessing from no use it has again.
@@lmm Thanks. I hope it is only the gauge too.

Brilliant! You should try get It visiting the NTSR for there Diesel gala this year what may go down!
How's the Ruston?
Do you want to review X loco?
Is Jupes still working?
Are you going to do more filming in America?
What's your favourite steam engine?
Do you do fluid in the weather changes on it
How many cylinders is it ? It sounds like a narrowboat with an old heritage engine.
new camera ?
looks more pro ! well done
Does the cab get cozy or do you need a big coat ?
Coat in winter certainly!
Jeez, sounds like the build-up to some momentous event. Let's....try (stop - pause), and fire up (pause), the loco (stare)
If you don't get to start your Loco for a year, and don't find it a momentous occasion when you do, I guess you shouldn't have a Loco
