So I took Loretta's advice for the reading section and my score for the reading section improved by 10 points on a practice test after only a week of practice. Just saying it worked for me.
GOOD LUCK GABRIEL!! Also, HEY! You won my book giveaway last Spring but I couldnt reach you?? Can you shoot me an email at a point when it doesnt interrupt your studies: ( kemushifan at gmail dot com)?
Also, is anyone else listening to the listening practice stuff and saying “1から4の中から最も良いものを一つ選んでください” along with it? 😂 I swear, I’m gonna start hearing that in my dreams.
One thing I would say is failing is not the end of the world. The first timr I took jlpt was n4, I skipped level 5 and I didn't even study for n4. I failed by 9 points which to me wasn't bad for not studying and not knowing the format since it was my first time taking it. But even before I got the test results which is a while, I had the feeling that I didn't do so great. I went out and bought the jlpt n3 grammar book right after and studied the whole book within a month during my winter break. To make a long story short, taking the test regardless of passing or not served as a source of motivation for me to study hard, and it let me know where I stood with my Japanese
1. In the few last weeks, do not study new things. Just keep focusing to remember and recall what you already know 2. Do not read all of the sentences in Doukai section. Read question and underlined first, then all of 1st pharagraph and the next ones only 1st and last sentences. 3. Listening practice, try to make a + sign on the blank paper and wrote all the details because they will give you 4 different options and beware of the tricky details AND THE MOST IMPORTANT: GET ENOUGH SLEEP!!!
While studying Japanese, since the beginning, I almost never review at home but was still able to get decent marks on our practice tests. And I studied for about a month and a half. My Japanese teacher's advice was to actully just "memorize, forget, memorize, forget" vocabs and kanji but always practice reading fast. Along with practicing to write hiragana and katakana everyday in less than a minute so we'll be able to remember even the characters that we previously rarely encounter or use. He also repeatedly told us not to think too much when reading nor writing. If you forget then look it up. And keep forgetting until it sticks to you. Also, reading while listening to a certain passage or sentence helps a lot too. We've also built a habit of focusing on the questions first. Then what is it about or who are the characters involved in the question or is about. Then, pick up things/vocabs we recognize that would fit to the situation or question best instead of understanding everything. That goes with listening as well. And all these were very useful to me and for my peers. So hope it is for you too. If you wanted to try this method. Lol. Anyways, best of luck to you people who'll be taking N5-N1!
I'm taking the N4 this year and got 85% on a practice even though there's a lot I don't know. A tip I have for the reading sections is to read for the questions before reading the text so you know what you're looking for. This really helped me during my last practice test, I used to read the questions after the text since that's how it's structured but when I did that I forgot most of the information by the time I got to the end.
I'm someone who self studied the whole way and I'm taking N2 next week.... and freaking out because balancing high school on top of JLPT is really damn hard ;; thank you so much for your advice though, Loretta! I really needed it! Your japanese is amazing and you're definitely a true inspiration for me ^^

Currently studying for the N3 and I did a practice test last weekend (and I set a timer!). I found that there is really a ton of time to finish all the problems. The listening test format is indeed something you need to get used to, but there is plenty of time to answer questions. For reading it definitely is smart to read the questions before reading the text, but for quick readers there is no real need to skip over half the sentences, just don't get stuck on that one word you don't know. This is just my experience from doing one practice test of course and I probably doesn't apply to other levels than the N3. Good luck studying everyone, I hope we all pass!

All the other channels are like "You don't have to use any books, just talk to natives. Oh and use italki, btw here is my code"! I took N3 last summer, failed the reading section but passed overall. Planning to take N2 this summer but the idea of doing JLPT again is scaring me a little. Anyway, good luck to all of you taking it in December. You'll smash it!
I don’t even know gah I’m so stressed that I can’t feel stress rn I still have hundreds of vocab to learn but I’ll definitely take all these tips and use them!! Especially that reading one... Thanks for the vid!!
Dear Loretta, I have saved this video of yours in my playlist since many years back and I can't believe I am going to take N1 test in a week's time! It feels good to re-watch your video and remember those 3 tips again at this juncture, they have reminded me not to get anxious and not to look for new vocabs to memorise, but to focus on reviewing those notes and materials I have prepared for the test. Great tips on the reading technique too, which I am 100% sure it was not possible for everyone to finish reading all passages within the time given during the test. I am going to heed your advice and try reading the 1st sentence and last sentence of every paragraph (except first and last). And of course, to be able to sleep well and "live" well for the rest of the week before the doomsday. I feel less stressful now, and somehow am able to regain my composure, and so I really want to thank you so much for this wonderful video! ❤
Thank you for this! The first time I took the JLPT a couple years ago, I failed it by a few points because of this. Like even though I studied and everything, in the real test everything moved along so much faster, and it was easy to run out of time on things. I’m retaking the N3 this year, and I’ve been trying to take practice tests and listen to listening tests, and just trying to do it all a bit faster. Still super nervous as the date approaches, but feeling a bit more confident as the days go on. Thank you, as always, for another great video with great tips! 😊
I will be taking the N1 ^^ When I did my N5 I was just sooo nervous! Now I learned to enjoy the exam...but still I'm not sure if it's going to be ok, それでも頑張ってみるよ♪
I'm also going to challenge the N1. I haven't been able to study much for the test, although I have been using Japanese pretty much everyday. Let's see how that goes! Good luck to us.
Good luck!! I took the N5 last year, I'd definitely say that half of the nervousness came from never experiencing the JLPT before. Now going into the N4 in 2 weeks, I'm not nearly as nervous and actually more excited! 頑張って下さい!
I double what Jennifer says below. It may be a pain but I think youd feel and perform better if you tried a practice test (i posted a link to all files, levels, sound files and answers in the description of this video).
I agree 10000% with what you said about reading or rather skimming. I don’t know how but I magically got full marks on the reading section on the N2 last December. I was lucky enough to have a teacher at the time that told me a year before I took the test that for N1 and N2 A LOT of people run out of time so you have to learn how to read QUICKLY. What I did was I got the shinkanzen master dokkai book and I timed myself for each question in the book. For each short question I tried to answer them in less than 2 min and then after I checked the answer I would read the passage again slowly. I also did what you suggested. I read the underlined portions and I read the sentences before than and the sentence after that.
studying for the N2 ...reviewing my kanji list now and just finished the listening part 2 weeks ago I ve been studying for the N2 since MARCH besides my work in the hospital as an intern doctor (GP) PLEASE WISH ME GOOD LUCK TO PASS THE N2 THIS TIME よろしくおねがいいたします。
Wholeheartedly agree on your study tips. This is useful even for JLPT N5 level. I took the N5 which was the easiest and most basic and studied normally instead of studying exam style. I barely finished the grammar/reading section portion of the exam on time and didn't as well as I thought in the listening because I was doing everything so slowly that the cd went ahead a few times while I was deciding my answer, urgh. So it's very important to use the last 2 weeks to train up speed and accuracy. Good luck everyone on your exams!
Now I haven't tried Loretta's Reading strategy, but personally, I like to read the sentence before and after the sentence the question is referring to, regardless of if it's underlined or not. The listening is quite unique but if you're used to writing down, crossing off wrong answers etc. while listening, it'll make your life so much easier for the listening section the day of. Also for the exam day itself, skip questions you don't know quickly so you'll have more time at the end to work on it if needed. Good Luck Everyone!
I would like to thank you. The night before I took the JNAT N3 I came across your video and it really help me on the reading part. I really cried when I got the results. Thank you so much. ❤ どもありがとうございます。
Don't worry those of you guys who are going to take N1 or N2 level. My result on those tests were under the score I was supposed to get. I mean I failed them. And most importantly I'm JAPANESE who grew up for entire time in japan and I did go to all the way from elementary school up to high school there. Am I Japanese?
@@IamINERT there were so many words that japanese would definitely never use. as far as i know those words were what people who are politicians or the prime minister or something use.
Toshi J I don’t know why I failed. For me personally I don’t like to read books so I wasn’t used to reading books that seemed very hard. Other than that i only could get the perfect score on the listening part.
I'll be taking the N5 for the first time and I'm still way behind where I should be. Whether I pass or fail I'm excited for the motivation it'll give me to keep going forward in learning Japanese!
Got the JLPT N3 today and I'm really grateful for the advice... especially the Reading Comprehension one! Remember doing the same thing for the SAT exam 😂
I liked how you mentioned in an early video about taking the JLPT consecutively. I realized after signing up for the N5 that there was still a lot of little things that I thought I already knew. I can't wait to take my first JLPT. :D
I just tried the N2 listening sample, and I'm not really clear on the four-part note-taking strategy. Would you consider modeling this approach in a future video? The reading strategies are great. I've taught TOEFL and state exam prep, and my recommended approach overlaps quite a bit with the only differences coming from the idiosyncrasies of each test. It's always helpful to know the idiosyncrasies of a test. Thank you for putting this out there. Props to Boomer for making some serious progress in such a short time. Respect. Oh, and by the way, I just picked up that 5-minute book you recommended a while back. It's available on Kindle, so I went for it. Thanks for that too.
I'll be sitting for N2, and I'll be aiming for the best failing grade I can (there's no question at this point that it will be a fail). What I lack is kanji/vocab. I study all through the year but nothing really sticks; I have little to no Japanese in my daily life anymore so nothing stays fresh. I'd love to hear ways others have found to learn & retain kanji and vocab in non-Japan settings! Also really wish I could take a June test, the end of the year is such a busy time 😫
From my experience, having spent time in Japan and now being back, I haven't really found a way to make JLPT kanji stick other than just drilling it with mnemonic devices etc. Unfortunately, watching shows and stuff hasn't helped me as much as I would like, but that's because academic Japanese and casual Japanese are so much different. I can't tell you how frustrating it was getting a kanji list for a course in Japan only to have my Japanese friends look at it and be like "why the HECK are you learning THESE kanji? Even I don't know them."
Doumo, Kemushi-chan! The tips are very warm and thoughtful. It was like you were about to come out of the screen and hug us all. 😊 It's going to be my 2nd take for N2 on Dec. 1st, and i kind of sucked at reading so I'm with you on the polishing of our skim reading skill. 😅 Anyway thank you so much! Have a good one today!
🔥🔥Am definitely going to implement ‘Blitzkreig Benkyou’, and see if I can get that to be come a catch phrase in the UK. Thanks for another awesome video. Especially the tips on speed reading.
Thanks for the reading tip! I barely passed a practice test at my local Japanese class, and I remember the reading section being much more difficult than doing them at home.
Thank you for the video! I’m taking N3 next week and it’s my first time ever to attend JLPT. I’m both nervous and excited, but also have some mental preparations in case I fail on the first try. XD Just have to try again later if it doesn’t work out now.
I’m practicing for the exam with past exams and it doesn’t seem that tight timed to me. I usually finish each section with half the remaining time left. Well except for listening, which has a definite pace. For me what works the best is to read questions/answers before reading/listening. Then when it’s time to pick an answer there’s no thinking involved anymore.
Last year I did the n4. I forgot that the reading session had these long texts, and that's pretty obvious right? So you can see then that I didn't study properly. With fifteen minutes to go, I came across these texts and didn't think twice. I didn't know this "Blitzkrieg" thing then, but that's exactly what I did. If I was going to read every sentence of each text, I wouldn't finish the test and reading like this really helped me stay calm and focus on the text rather than thinking I couldn't do it. I pass, was great... This year n3
Great tips, Loretta!!! Unfortunately, I was so busy studying in the lead up that I didnt check youtube and see your vid in time OTL笑 I maybe passed the N3, but the reading section really did do me in. If I have to take it again, or if I pass and go up to N2, am defo gonna follow your reading strategy. No time for slow and steady with 読解, my dudes
Sad that I discovered you literally 9 days before the N2 x) I will try your advice. After daily studying for so many months its so frustrating to keep finding unknown words or kanji. Or worse yet, kanji you've done and cant remember
Gahhhh, so nervous! I am comfortable with the grammar but Im worried I don't know enough kanji and vocab! I'll take your advice on the reading section for sure because when I was doing the reading practice my comprehension was decent but when I reached the long readings I got overwhelmed. I'm going to try the practice test reading section again with your advice and hopefully it wont seem so daunting
So I took Loretta's advice for the reading section and my score for the reading section improved by 10 points on a practice test after only a week of practice. Just saying it worked for me.

And most importantly I'm JAPANESE who grew up for entire time in japan and I did go to all the way from elementary school up to high school there. Am I Japanese?
うえおあい wait how?
@cita pratiwi that is so true!
Wish you the best of luck with that!
Cramming grammar for the n2 right now. Should finish today, then I will quickly go over reading passages, and some kanji
I’m taking the jlpt for the first time (n2) this time round but I’m completely open to failing and taking it again in the summer 😅
Thank you, your advice actually prepared me for JLPT N5 last December! 😊
I'll be taking the N5 for the first time and I'm still way behind where I should be. Whether I pass or fail I'm excited for the motivation it'll give me to keep going forward in learning Japanese!
I gotta refresh my Japanese ability when I get out to Tokyo next month! Not many opportunities to speak Japanese in North Carolina lol!
Im taking the N5 this july. Goodluck to everyone! 😊💜
It's so relaxing to study japanese just because, without thinking about the JLPT!
As always, thank you so much for the helpful information! 皆さん、頑張ってくださいね!
Ok.. I trust your Advices. I Belive your advices. Wish me Luck.
Heading On Sunday for the N3.
先輩様、ありがとうございます。本当に頑張りましょう。
Thanks so much for this video!! Will be using in November when I'm scrambling to prepare for the n2
Just bombed the reading portion of an N1 mock test and will be Blitzkreig Benkyoing it up for the next month!!
One more month to go. YOU GOT THIS
My test it in 3 hours)) TIME TO PREPARE

KemushiChan ロレッタ
Thankss! And my exam was good, ❤️💜 all bc of you 💞
Got the JLPT N3 today and I'm really grateful for the advice... especially the Reading Comprehension one! Remember doing the same thing for the SAT exam 😂
The passage tip is really useful.
Greetings from Mexico! I'm preparing for the JLPT N2 and I'm a little scared. Your video really helped tho!
Thanks for that too.
this is great advice. thanks for this! ^^
I will take the N3 test in 11 days!
me toooo :D good luck
Thank you so much.. This video flares the confidence in side me. Thank you once again for taking time for us....
🔥🔥Am definitely going to implement ‘Blitzkreig Benkyou’, and see if I can get that to be come a catch phrase in the UK. Thanks for another awesome video. Especially the tips on speed reading.
I’m still watching the ads but I already know that I needed this video
Thanks for the study tips. Some I think are useful even for N4 and N5. Now time to practice reading and listening.
Thank you so much for your advice!! This December will be my second time taking N3 level. Hopefully, I will pass this time.
Loretta coming in and saving everyone’s ass on the JLPT. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻♥️♥️♥️
All of us in the comments: Thaaaaaannks Mooooooom!
Watching this before my Jlpt exam tomorrow🥺🥺🥺 thank you for the tips
I’m practicing for the exam with past exams and it doesn’t seem that tight timed to me. I usually finish each section with half the remaining time left. Well except for listening, which has a definite pace.
For me what works the best is to read questions/answers before reading/listening. Then when it’s time to pick an answer there’s no thinking involved anymore.
Thanks for these pieces of advice Loretta-san. Hoping to nail N2 this December.
I'll be taking N3 on December
I'll try it by using this methods. Thank you, your tips🤗❣️
love the advice, sleep is always important!!!
Omg thanks for that video I needed it so much since I'm taking n3 this Sunday!
YOUR TIPS ARE SO CLEAR! THANK YOU❤️
Great tips, Loretta!!!
Sad that I discovered you literally 9 days before the N2 x)
I will try your advice. After daily studying for so many months its so frustrating to keep finding unknown words or kanji. Or worse yet, kanji you've done and cant remember
I love your advice, really helped and cheered me up! I'm going to sit for N1 next week, so please wish me luck!
GOOD LUCKKK
YOU GOT THIS ( ゚∀゚)ノシ
Gahhhh, so nervous! I am comfortable with the grammar but Im worried I don't know enough kanji and vocab! I'll take your advice on the reading section for sure because when I was doing the reading practice my comprehension was decent but when I reached the long readings I got overwhelmed. I'm going to try the practice test reading section again with your advice and hopefully it wont seem so daunting
I will apply this for next year. Thank you so much!!
I take jlpt n2 in December, your advice will be so useful
勉強がんばってね。
英語を頑張って聞き取ろうかと思ったが、途中で心が折れて力尽きた…。
