  • In this video I move camp to meet up with my girlfriend Kelly. We camp for a few days before I say goodbye and make a quick trip to Utah for some time sensitive business. The quick trip has turned into me being stuck in the Utah high desert until I can come up with a solution.
    Thank you for being here.
    *My name is Brian. I started living full time in a self built camper van in 2014 in my hometown of San Diego, CA. I hit the road full-time in 2015 to pursue seasonal work and travel around the U.S. I find free camping on public land and enjoy photography, hiking, biking, and kayaking in nature. Join me on my adventures.
    Thanks for watching!

    I too was thinking about MORR , "Matt's Off Road Recovery"! Tell him that you are a fellow youtuber and really need some help. I bet they would help you and let you video as they video... Flat Iron was definitely the wrong metal to use as it does not have the strength to hold up to that kind of weight. Box metal or channel shaped would have been what you wanted. Wishing you all the very best Brian. EDIT.. Any chance you can contact the person that you bought the bike from and ask for help? Maybe ride the bike back to his place and leave the bike with him for safe keeping.. And then he gives you a ride back to get your van.. Then take your van in for the repairs and then go back to retrieve your bike..

    if you have at least 2 extra ratchet straps, you can reload the bike as usual, then attach the straps to the far left and right of the bike's platform and take respective straps up to the grab handles on the back end of the truck box. crank it up just enough to take most of the weight off. should get you where you need to go. Best of luck.

    • @jwagnermail
      @jwagnermail 2 года назад

      The straps up to the body of the truck is an OK idea, but the grab handles are probably just screwed into the wood and are not strong enough. Solid points on the body of the box need to be found, then attachments points bolted to the box frame.

    • @goldiespub9150
      @goldiespub9150 2 года назад

      @@jwagnermail The grab handles on that particular box van are actually very heavy duty and bolted through the box frame. I'm confident that it would hold well for many miles until problem was remedied properly. We have that exact box van.

    Being a job site heavy equipment welder and race car fabricator (now retired) this would be my on site fix without any welding...forget reinforcing the existing welded area under the bumper it's good as is to support 250lb, what's needed is two 1/4" cables with turnbuckles to support the rack from above...drill 1/2" holes at the inside ends of the carry rack...find the most solid spot on the outside edge of the Vans box...this could be anywhere from 2' to 4' or even 6' up from the bumper...drill into the box's frame and bolt in a 1/2" threaded eye and back it up with a 2"w x 1/4" flat strap material or what ever you can fit into that space inside the edge framing...attach the two turnbuckles to the carry rack...string the 1/4" cables between the turnbuckles and 1/2" screw eyes...secure cable ends with cable crimps...loading and unloading bike you may have to loosen or remove one of these cables that may be in the way...no big deal if you use a hook on one end...the reason you need to suspend the bike with cables is when you're going down washboard rough dirt roads the bike will not be bouncing up and down...if you only beef up the hitch part under the bumper it won't stop the bike from bouncing up an down, and give it time the metal will fatigue and crack...if you don't have the tools to do this job "buy them" (estimate $100) it will be cheaper than having someone else do this relative easy job...you can get all the parts and tools at Lows or Home Depot or ACE hardware...good luck mah-man...BTW I watched your video and was just there a few days ago boondocking at N Rim in rain, hail & snow, then moved down to the Vermilion Cliffs area where I road the edge of the canyon with the Colorado river below~Go fast take chances~Go faster than the crash~

    Nice bike! You'll have a lot of fun with that. Now you just need a hitch you can have faith in. It does look like bolting straight up into the bumper would be a good temporary fix. I would look for a square U bolt which is used on leaf springs. As you say, a mobile welder would be the best option. It sounds like you have good leads so I hope one of those works out for you.

    I use the same bike rack on my Suzuki samurai to haul my xt250. Had to use two straps from the roof rack. One to each end of the rack. Hauled the bike that way all over the country with no issues. Maybe find or install hook points, I see you have a handle on the right side of the box, a heavy ratchet strap from there to the end of the rack and another on the other end. Takes the leverage weight off the hitch. Hook the strap under the side of the rack closest to the bumper and it won’t hinder loading/unloading the bike.

    I believe that you would be wise to purchase a small motorcycle trailer. That motorcycle carrier does not make sense for that motorcycle/van combo. You could use it for more than just the motorcycle. It would be a lot easier on the van and safer on the road. Remember that you do have a responsibility to others while on the road. Keep yourself and others safe on the road.

    How about removing the rack from the hitch and making it a ramp - load the bike in the van (just temporarily) and secure it for the drive in to town to locate assistance. Simple way to have everything in same place at same time in the best shop to find a solution (vs in the field). It'll work out - best of luck Brian

    Don't forget your towel. Great attitude Brian but I know you & Kelly are bummed. Fingers crossed for a solution. I know what you mean about feeling that we know folks based on their videos. I feel that you are an honest, decent guy. I feel your joy when you & Kelly are able to adventure together. Best wishes!

    I was in the same situation with my truck , had my welder put 2 receiver hitches one on each frame rail roughly 30” apart . Less rattle , more secure.

    Hi Brian, I had the same situation with my motorcycle. Had a custom receiver put in and used a Ultimate MX Hauler Motorcycle Carrier. It only weighs about 85 lbs, very heavy duty and has a locking mechanism to keep it from moving in the receiver. Used it for 4 years until I sold my bike.
