- Art-Shape sessions is a collection of interviews with up and coming and influential artists.
Our first interview was with Mike Kinsella of Owen. The interview and live footage were shot at The Red House in Syracuse, NY
Saw him play in Dekalb quite a few years back. I wanted his autograph so I brought my acoustic with me. (POS Takamine, but that's all I could afford at the time) First thing he asked me when I asked him to sign it..."what tuning is this in?" I replied "FACGCE"....he nodded and wrote, " Zach, don't ever change." Obviously, he had no idea who I was...so I'm sure he meant to never change my tuning. Lol. Great guy though, and I love his music.
It's a bummer that he said he hasn't really gotten anywhere with his music. He's influenced an entire generation!
5 years later...
He’s gotten to me
He didn't make money, that's all that matters at the end of the day when you have a family
I’ve been listening to Owen for the better half of my life. Discovering and rediscovering through different phases of my life, yet always has been like that one comforting friend or an old diary that I found. It’s funny that his music always gets great reviews but when you look into it is bc it’s his fans reviewing it lol just shows how niche it is. Yet it’s shame because he deserves more love and recognition, his talent is insane and the way his music reaches those who like it is indescribable, even today with his more recent work.
"music from my mom, drinking from my dad." same, dude.
So thankful for real musicians like Mike Kinsella.
I met Mike last month at a show in Leeds (Brudenell Social Club). Brilliant! And he was selling his own merch, so I got to have a vinyl album signed by him and shake his hand.
such a down to earth dude, pretty much exactly how I expected him to be
It's funny how he says "I think his name is... David Gavurin" feeling unsure about it and then just after "he's my favourite guitarist of all time"
he is the greatest and most talented artist of our time. for real, he is so humble
Can't not love this guy
probably the best owen interview I've seen
this guy is from my hometown of Champaign, Illinois. Such a legend. SO much respect for him. I want to be just like him.
I like the advice at the end. I think i'll live by that
every musical influence he named i was like hell yes, hell yes, hell yessss.
Everytime I hear Mike Kinsellas voice, or see his beautifulness, my ovaries sigh.
HEY MIKE THATS A NICE SHIRT
+NeigborhoodMoose13 He's J. Crew's biggest customer
and one of the best guitarists of all time!
Still love this! Thank you
great version of A Bird In Hand
such a great interview.
J Mascis and the Sundays! Totally agree. Great bands. We're lucky to have grown up musically in the 90's such good tunes
he is. basically my fave. my fave thing ever.
Don't forget his cousin Nate Kinsella! The force behind Birthmark!

"My Bloody Valentine"...hmm...now that he mentions it...
Hahahaha
Now that he mentions it they're still a shitty band. I love old school "shoegaze" music, but these guys just took it a little too far and tried just a little too hard.
Greg Mitchell ^ hahahaha
Yeah, I kinda get why a lot of people wouldn't dig MBV. Shields does some freaky stuff with that guitar tone. I think it adds to the hazy sound-scape, but that level of noise distortion can throw you off if you're not in the mood.
Thanks!
Mike you are the best! I will pay$1,000 if we can short band show. The is will people who love u.
Legend.
@superpumpernickel Damn! I knew I should have shelled out more for the 5,000 mile warranty. Thanks for the heads up.
@superpumpernickel Yes, I requested the advanced high tech pair when I got them. They were slightly more expensive but moments like this make it worth it.
Fuck yes
WHAT i live in syracuse
Hi Matt.
Who’s matt
MORISSEY OMG
I can definitely see where you're coming from, and actually I agree. Although as much as I love Mike's music, I'm not sure I'm comfortable comparing anyone to Morrissey.
Well You're Definitely Not Alone Greg.... I'm Sure Morrissey Wouldn't Stand For It Either Lol.
i didn't know charlie day was owen
this is hilarious.
seems like such a depressed guy :/
Emo*, american football you know🤣
morrissey
@superpumpernickel An ETSY seller, OvariesBeforeBrovaries. I like to suppord the independent designers, you know?
I've loved Mike for a long time, well before his Owen days. He's a fucking genius and Owen will always be the brightest gem for me. He's a great interview, too. (I did as such when I was in college in '01) My only wish is to see him live and shake his hand. His stuff rules on vinyl, by the way.
