Owen - The Armoire (Nervous Energies session) feat Oscar

- Опубликовано: 8 май 2011
- While in Chicago of May 2011 Mike Kinsella (Owen) was gracious enough to allow me into his home to film 3 Nervous Energies sessions. Mike played a new track The Armoire, Brown Hair in a Bird's Nest from New Leaves, and O, Evelyn... from his most recent 7" of the same name. All his music is available on Polyvinyl, you need to own all of it.

coming back to this after a decade feels... welcoming.. and warm. and all the memories just poured in endlessly.
The thing I love about him is that he just sings what's real. Stuff that just goes on in every day life. He's also very metaphorical in his words. And in this video, yes the dog is funny, but it just goes to show that he really is just chilled out in his house as if he isn't even on camera. Mike Kinsella is by far one of my favorite artists. He's amazing.
back here in 2020 hitting that replay button :)
The tonality of this song is so natural and unique. Kinsella is a legend; the most underated artist I know of.
Oscar killed it! Mike was good too.
So perfect. As soon as he starts talking about being home with his family Oscar starts barking without realizing he was adding emphasis to the lyrics of the song. Very nice.
Look at his picking fingers... really look at them. He makes it look so effortless.
Like, seriously, I even play guitar and I have no idea how he does it!
i fuckin love this song. owen plays the best acoustic guitar licks ive ever heard in my life ever. lol. seriously does
This song is beautiful and so is he
i love this man.
Been listening to his music for a couple of years now, putting aside the beautiful lyrics, I really respect his finger picking and finger placement. Got a long way to go for me to learn this, and I have been playing guitar for 12 years lol
been a fan since 2016. still gold as ever.
"The Devil knows I'm born again, and I can't hold these walls up on my own"either, my brother...none of us here can, and isn't it great to know who can???
I love how metaphoric this guy is! Good stuff...
Nothing but pure talent from Mike Kinsella
Tell me about it! Just listen to it a thousand times; it helps. God love him, but Mike's timing is from another planet.
that was ridiculously gorgeous. wow. just wow.
Great song. Feels like I'm just sitting in his house watching him.
Mike is my hero.
the best artist I have ever heard
this is amazing. can't wait for the new record.
hahaha holy shit oscar
SineRider whoa!!! Crazy to see Sinerider here :)
feat. Oscar! hahah . As long as Mike Kinsella keeps writing/playing music - than I'll always have something to listen to! *
Before reading the description, I instantly knew that it was his home, hahahahaha.
love your work dude.
"All his music is available on Polyvinyl, you need to own ALL OF IT." True.
i love this and i'm ashamed to say that i just now realized he was part of american football. and i've been swearing by their record and falling asleep to it for a couple years now.
Mike, his brother and cousins went to my high school. Even though they are all a good ten+ years older than me it's still neat!
i really dig the way mike kinsella plays the guitar. ima take lessons
He always looks baked, but I know he isn't Hahahaha this is beautiful though. Mike is a musical genius in general but everything he writes is poetic, thoughtful and inspirational. Cheers!
Damn it Oscar, why you have to be so cute :c
It looked like Oscar's barking totally tensed up Mike and threw him off a little. Still amazing performance though, I love how lost I feel in all of Mike's music. One big wandering melody.
I love watching how nonchalant he is with being a musical genius.
Dat smile when Oscar barks!
@AccidentAmbulance I know, while learning this song I just now started using my middle finger while I pick, I used to only use my thumb and pointer, but that's almost impossible with this song lol. Not only is he an incredible player/writer, but his skills in the studio are freaking remarkable. The stuff he adds in his songs are just perfectly pinpointed. He knows exactly what to do to fill them out on an album, and yet his acoustic versions are still as awesome.
he gets more and more like Mark Kozelek with every new batch of songs.
@matpeachey My favorite by far is "At home with owen." 2nd place goes to "I do perceive." I think those are often considered his best.
Brown hair in a Bird's Nest has such a beautiful tone, as for the chord progression, and tonality it has so much more than this song. However, The Armoir is still a beautiful piece. Would love to know the tuning for Brown Hair in a Bird's Next though, seems pretty easy to play.
The artist formerly known as “Oscar”
CALM DOWN OSCAR
@dallaslowderful DGCGAC with a capo on the first fret
Dammit, Oscar!
when is this song coming out!! lol soo good
Playing this song and trying to sing it is so hard.
Colin Shea not at all)
he is too good at playing a guitar
@moogrocker i beg to differ man. Mark definitely has his own style, and i think that a few of Mikes older tracks (possum, everyone feels like you) have a little bit of a Mark Kozelek feel, but Mike definitely branched into his own, warmer, faster tempo style.
If he missed even a single note I didn't hear it. I can't get even a few lines into the song because of the timing and the technical skill needed
drummer for Owls too :)
I love Owen/Mike so much. No doubt about it. But when I watch his right thumb pick, it's like a fucking octopus appendage just dancing with the wind. Is it smooth and clean? Is it alien as fuck? I'm not certain. Great song
@markjlombardo You should have listened to him from the start in his earlier projects then! American Football is my favourite.
i think that's his favorite flannel
yeah oscar wakes me up
The armoire
That you found by the dumpster
While visiting your sister
It looks fine
In the living room where
The others you've rescued
Go to die
That old mirror by the bed
Without much of anything
To reflect
Save for a few holes
In a crippled bed post
Shadows that don't move
Cobwebs in the corner
A dead spider on the wall
Well, I'm home
But I'm not home
Boxes in the basement
That were spared
From rising waters
Discarded blood-stained
Drum skins and sticks
Rest on your mother's mattress
Well, I'm home
And somehow while I was gone
This house I'd left for dead had lingered on
Well, I'm home
With my own family in tow
And everything's the same
But different
And I'm home again
But the devil knows I'm born again
And I can't hold these walls up on my own
Good but you forgot Oscar's part.
well this is nice isn't it!
Damn it Oscar
im just watching his thumb !
Awesome song, anyone know what the real meaning of this song?
his house looks like an advertisement
@musicismyfavorite777 he uses every fucking finger basically, i don't get it either, i've tried, and it's so difficult. he really is such an impressive player. and he makes it look so fucking effortless! while singing...beautifully...
What's tuning is this in? I feel like I could learn it if I knew that... thanks to whomever can help!
a little bit late after your comment but if anyone is still looking its DGCGAC :)
What camera was this shot with?
Oscar!
@Oscaracer one time it was his phone. hahaha
"OSCAR!" lol
@gramnegative17 Any interest in tabbing this out? Or if anyone want to tab this out...I would love to but I've never been good at picking out finger picking patterns by ear.
Does he cut his own hair?
Its a Martin logo
so he plays drums too? what am i doing with my life
OSCAR.
you forgot Cap'n Jazz
OSCAR WHY YOU RUIN THE VIBES!!! D;
dear repeat button,
im sorry.
apologies,
nathan
dude... get some sleep mike kinsella.
why?
I bet that dog is named Oscar caus of oscar wilde
Okay, I am retarded, but is that a Martin DX-1 or some kind of Guild that Mike is playing?
Mike Kinsella has reall y bad luck for outside factors while playing, there's always cellphones sounding, people talking, babys crying, and dogs barking jaja
Oscar's dog barks are like the inner mind conflict one might thing about while listening
OSCAR.
