I admire what they do but as being a bit immature what she said at the start was extremely funny. I am a seaman specialist and it's extremely hands on

Basically the role really depends on what ship you end up being drafted on. For example I was on the aircraft carrier (QE) so I spend the majority of the time cleaning flats (compartments) since there is so much real estate to look after. On a daily basis on other ships you’ll do upper deck maintenance through the day ie, painting, maintaining life jackets, rope maintenance (more complex than it sounds). You’ll also do plenty of seamanship evolutions when required i.e launching the sea boat, RAS, entering and leaving harbour (specials). What the advert barely covers is work on the bridge which there is a lot of. This includes acting as lookout, Helmsmen (steering the ship), visual signaling(flashing light and flags), and also tactical commutations with other ships over the headset (fleetwork) this advert barely covers all the tactical side of what sea specs have do which shocks most new recruits when they get to phase 2 training. It’s more complex then you think and some people do end up failing phase 2 because of it but obviously with the right attitude you’ll be sound. A considerable amount of time is spend learning morse code and being able to read flashing light as well as learning how to correctly communicate to other ships via headset.Hope this helps soz it’s so long winded. Let me know if you need any more info 👍

@wackjack8 all naval personnel are trained as soldiers first during basic training. As a Seaman Specialist you will have to guard the ship whilst it is at port.

Hello Dennis. You've been at Raleigh for 2 weeks now. How are you getting on? Has it cracked up to be all you thought it would? Is the Seaman branch still divided into 3 Specialist branches or has all that changed ie Radar operator, TAS & Gunnery? Good luck & I hope you get to see the world, it's a great life if you choose to make a life-long career out of it. Or just a very good piss up for a few years, if that is all you want!

Oh dear... old oppos. They really do give those hooks to bloody anyone these days..... All that needs to top it off is Scouse Redfern and Pete the Meat and the full set's there.
As for 'only join because they're not smart enough to be engineers' well mate, you stay below deck during maintenance periods and change engines; we'd be in the pub. Don't let the door get you on the way out, eh?

i am 25 years old and i have been interested in joining up with the Royal navy as a seaman specialist for a few years now. i work a boring 8 to 5 and i am just getting no where in life and i want to see the world! My only downfall about signing up is 1. getting shot ( though being in the navy is probably safer than walking in the strets of glasgow at 2am ) and 2. I am a type 1 diabetic. my question is - as a "controlled" diabetic - can i still join up if i decide its what i want to do?
