It's called rabbit tobacco, cos rabbits hide in weeds. This is common sense. If you mow, you can't spot PE, nor rabbits. And, the stems tend to stay upright (lasting) for days. I think the Latin name means, curvy leaf. To be honest, the wild version is a horrid eyesore.

Why do some people smoke it?

its veryyyy good smoke !! "It was often smoked in place of tobacco by both Native Americans and early settlers, and contains no nicotine. The smoke was thought to have held a spiritual or mystic power for many Indians. [really just makes you think more clearly and chilly] The Cheyenne often dropped the leaves on hot coals and the Cherokee were known to have used it in sweat baths. The Creek used it as a cold remedy, as a poultice applied to the throat for mumps, and as a sedative; the Koasati for fever; the Menominee for headache and a psychological aid when dried leaves were steamed as an inhalant for “foolishness.” Many tribes thought that the smoke had a restorative power that could revive the unconscious or paralyzed. " get some on eba!!

Older people who were in my neighborhood smoked it for a bronchodilator.

My Stepdad smoked it when he was a kid, I assume to look older, or bored. He's an old man, now. This is considered a weed these days.
