This clip does not quite do justice to the incredible tension in that 6th game, with Schlager escaping from 2-3 and 6-10 down to hang on to the chance to win. Escapology which he repeated in the semi vs Kong, in another nerve-shredding match. He sweated blood against better players, held his nerve, and deserved his dream run for the biggest TT title.
Was there! Atmosphere in the hall was amazing. 15K people supporting Schlager. The funniest thing is I wasn't a table tennis fan, I didn't know anything about the sport.
Loosing 3-2 and 10-6 with Wang liqin and finally beat him, who else can do it, NOBODY, for this year Werner Schlager is the best european player ever, you are right, he is miracle
wang was the blueprint for the modern chinese players, built like a tank with an efficient backhand and cannon forehand. I think ma lin was the last true world class "old chinese guy" style player. Xu xin mixed the too and was glorious to watch because of it, sad to see his time in the spotlight is all but over. It's sad, but there just really isn't a choice for modern penholders to play like ma lin. You just have to play like felix lebrun, which is basically just the same. The issue is obviously the larger ball reducing spin and encouraging faster hits, but it would be a nightmare to do another ball change. I think the ITTF should experiment with other options in isolated leagues. Perhaps limiting players to 5.7 or 5.8 thickness all wood blades. It would slow down the game and make spin centered play more viable.
@@rcbuggies57Wang wasn't the blueprint for Chinese players at all. Most of them are short and chubby and certainly bh dominant. If you mean Wang Hao I concur although he was better from mid distance than any current Chinese player.

he was also running behind from 1-3 and 1-4 or so. How did he do this? Must have been insane mentally..
i can remember this WTTC and especially this game. all odds against schlager, he managed to get into his opponents mind. well done
I wish I had been there to see this match live

Schlager the miracle man

@@daryldixon7419 didn´t he have match point against him when he played Kong Linghui aswell?
Far better than seeing FZD, Ma Long....I prefer ancient chinese, and europeans like Waldner and Schlager

Klasse Spiel von Schlager! Er hat viel Druck in seinen Schlägen und spielt konsequent
Old table tennis is the most interesting
Schlager: the european hero

TT Japan ❤️ 🇯🇵 ♥️
golden era of table tennis unfortunately. 48 mm balls and speed glue were the best times.
48 mm almost seems like...Federer needs to challenge these guys
Try 38 mm ; )
