My husband and I have moved 6 times in 12 years - buying and Selling homes. People really don’t understand us. That we aren’t attached to a house, but see the family as “home”. I Think some even pity our children, even though we stayed in a radius of 20 km 😄 I love following your journey! 🙏
Been in Portugal for a year --- I'm been with you for two years. You are one of the reasons I came to Portugal. I'm in Coimbra, Portugal and I love it. I'm from the Bay Area also. Watch to see why you are leaving Portugal. Happy to know you are not leaving. The Divide States is getting bad. The last time I was in Oakland, California they broke my window and stole my computer. The homeless are everywhere and crime is everyday. I feel so safe here and I have no fear.
I am from Oakland as well and planning my move to Portugal next year to either Porto or Lisbon. I visited Portugal last year or 3 weeks scouring places to live: Lisbon, Tavira, Evora, Coimbra and Porto taking the public bus and rail systems. I loved the University of Coimbra. So beautiful. I LOVE Portugal and cannot wait to move. My car was just broken into again (4th time😒) and my house 3 times. It's crazy how much the homeless issue has gotten especially since COVID-19 happened. How do you enjoy Portugal overall?

Not sure where you are seeing information, but there are many at least US based REITs that are yielding well over 15% in dividends annually. Of course you'll have to pay regular ordinary income taxes on these type of dividends regardless of where you live on the planet since it's technically US sourced income.
We just returned from our first trip to Lisbon and Cascais just a couple of days ago. While this was part of a multiple country trip which included several cities Spain and Morocco, Portugal is now atop the list of our potential expat destinations as we felt a much stronger than anticipated connection with this country.
It’s taken me a while to watch this video but I happened to watch this morning while I’m back in Lisbon! I have already decided to make the move and this just helped me to solidify my decision. Dreams evolve! Thanks Amon and Christina for the continual encouragement!

With the girls getting older, I can't blame you for moving back to Lisbon! Lisbon stole our hearts on our first visit. We are targeting a move to the Saldanha neighborhood after spending 2 weeks in that area. We know the location will come with a cost, but we are willing to position ourselves for it and look for a great investment! I have a feeling you guys moved close to that area. It is completely an amazing location! Cheers to one day being walking distance neighbors in the future. 😊 Keep inspiring us to live our dreams...even as they evolve.

Does it really work fliping houses in Portugal? Isn't the capital gains tax and sale taxes way to high to make it worthwhile or do you just incorporate those into the sale price and make a smaller profit?

I live in the UK and most of western society is secular with a pretense of upholding religious beliefs and freedoms so far as they don't clash with transgender/LGBTQ ideology. Would love to know how much you made in appreciation/gains from the sale of the house (including costs to fix it up). As a percentage of course. I do really like that strategy, I am looking to diversify my stock portfolio (already have REIT's). Never really liked the idea of rental properties (managing myself at least) so this is a valid alternative.

Definitely, it is an advantage to live close to a major airport. I was there a month ago on a vacation week. Bolt is the local Uber, but it's much cheaper!!

We are retiring on Nov1, 23 at 55. We are taking a year off to travel and just be. Our original plan was to move to Florida and buy a house plus some land. However, my husband has had an injury which will take some time to heal. So, having a large parcel of land will not do for him at this time. So, instead we will just take a year to ourselves with no plans and live. Like you, we were able to build a 401k with about 2.5 and a house of about 1.5. We also, have a pension plan. So, for the next few years we will live on our pension and leave the 401k be. Our house will be passed down to our kids to live or sell as they choose. Once, we turn 65.5 we will take our SS plus our pension and just let things be. We are looking forward to waking up to the sound of the ocean and falling asleep to a nice breeze in a hammock.
That was such a cool home!!! Seemed like a great little 'country house' with the fruit trees / a little acreage... the only thing I can see is that you might like a different location, i.e. the urban amenities of Lisbon... still, that was a sweet one.
We were planning on being in PT this summer. Pretty happy that we changed our approach. Sounds like Europe is hammered by tourists in the West and Russia - Ukraine issues on the East. Glad to sit out the competition for resources.

We are retiring on Nov1, 23 at 55. We are taking a year off to travel and just be. Our original plan was to move to Florida and buy a house plus some land. However, my husband has had an injury which will take some time to heal. So, having a large parcel of land will not do for him at this time. So, instead we will just take a year to ourselves with no plans and live. Like you, we were able to build a 401k with about 2.5 and a house of about 1.5. We also, have a pension plan. So, for the next few years we will live on our pension and leave the 401k be. Our house will be passed down to our kids to live or sell as they choose. Once, we turn 65.5 we will take our SS plus our pension and just let things be. We are looking forward to waking up to the sound of the ocean and falling asleep to a nice breeze in a hammock.

That was such a cool home!!! Seemed like a great little 'country house' with the fruit trees / a little acreage... the only thing I can see is that you might like a different location, i.e. the urban amenities of Lisbon... still, that was a sweet one.

We were planning on being in PT this summer. Pretty happy that we changed our approach. Sounds like Europe is hammered by tourists in the West and Russia - Ukraine issues on the East. Glad to sit out the competition for resources.
