      Thomas how good were they live?... im interested, that was a great era in music, not only talent wise, but also the transformation of the sound from '66-'73. In that context, how good were the doors in comparison to their musical peers?... I was too young to see them live, but have listened to them a lot. they imo have aged well in comparison to most of the music of that era. they are also obvious legendary. But I ask you, one who saw them live and was well aware of them when morrison was alive, did they stand out then as the singular force that the legend plays out now?

    • @thomasrocker7408
      @thomasrocker7408 4 года назад +5

      @@kelvinkloud they were absolutely amazing. Jim Morrison had an excellent stage presence. But quite frankly my favorite member of the Doors was Ray Manzarek. In the studio the Doors always had a bass guitar player for their recordings. But on stage it was all Ray Manzarek on keyboard playing a bass riff. Fantastic musician. Also I believe that RUclips has the exact concert video. I believe that it was June 1968.

    • @kelvinkloud

      @@thomasrocker7408 yes... it was all video recorded & has been cleaned up via HD in really sharp format. It was actually early july. You are lucky, such a cool venue & it seemed like a perfect night weather wise.... interesting sidenote. the famous actor, harrison ford, was part of that film crew. mick jagger was also in the front row of the seats. Its probably the doors at their peak of commercial success & influence.... morrison's prank hiccup during when the musics over is funny & shows how he had the audience in his hand... yes ray was an animal talent wise. maybe the best keyboardist ever in rock, certainly in the top 3, considering he was handling bass simultaneously & arranged many of their compositions.... assuming you saw several other of the great acts then, did the doors really stand out as unique? where do you place them in that era?

    • @thomasrocker7408
      @thomasrocker7408 4 года назад

      @@kelvinkloud the Doors were definitely unique. On stage you never knew what you were going to get. Morrison always improvised. I remember him yelling at the " light man" during this concert. But although I really liked the Doors, I only liked a few of their songs. As a up and coming session drummer myself I was into more structured music. My mentor was Hal Blaine. I hung out with a lot of the musicians loosely identified as the Wrecking Crew. I appreciated their musical knowledge. Most of them were far superior musicians than individuals in rock bands. They all had classical and jazz backgrounds. So yes Ray Manzarek and the Doors were great, but I don't know if their music would have been as popular today if Morrison had lived. And as far as just pure rock, I preferred bands like Grand Funk Railroad, The Electric Flag, ( Buddy Miles was awesome) Quicksilver Messenger Service, etc.

    • @kelvinkloud
      @kelvinkloud 4 года назад

      @@thomasrocker7408 wow, blaine... thats high cotton. You were around a nucleus of major talent & contributors. I assume then you probably knew glen campbell as well.... such a good time & place to come up as a musician. Those guys had a lot to do w/ the infrastructure of why music was so special in that era. Their contribution was immeasurable. Hats off to you guys and that culture of high quality musicianship... I like flag & messenger too. overlooked to some degree... the morrison death thing helped the doors marketing wise. there was a james dean element around how their whole saga went down that they were able to market well in early'80's resurgence in sales & popularity. if he had lived not sure they couldve kept up that momentum. Also the fact that their sound was unique & w/ that off kilter dark carnival underground element has also helped. Morrison had a charisma & singular angle on performance art for a window of time that also solidified their legend. Plus it was a very strong era in music... thanks again for your insights. Hope to see more of your takes on other threads.

    Before I get to the Doors, Howdy Mama Moon! Love the specs! I also see you're closing in on 900 subs, Mojo, so big congratulations there. The road to the magic 1K number and monetization is getting clearer. Now as far as the Doors' albums go, "Morrison Hotel" is my personal favorite because of the down-and-dirty blues sound, though I really don't have a quarrel with those who may prefer the more psychedelic material. This song's style combines the best of both worlds, at least to my ears. Thanks for this reaction, I tip my hat to the lady, and I look forward to the next batch of goodies, ESPECIALLY the next appearance of Uncle Ted and whenever you get to some James Taylor. ROCK ON!

    I remember some footage of the Doors recording their second last album, long after this album. They were all like schoolboys waiting for the bell because the studio technician had strict orders to let them play their parts again and again to make sure it wasn't sloppy.
    I bet the tripping and at times very swaying tempo on " strange days" had something to do with that 😂

    About his poetry:
    Some poets, such as Poe, painted detailed pictures for your mind.
    Other poets gave you a canvas with a backdrop, and let you paint your own picture. That's Jim's style, and he has it mastered. He sometimes references obscure literature or history. He also writes about things that are personal to him. Here's an example:
    (From the song Soul Kitchen on the debut album.)
    "Your fingers weave quick minarets (steeples)
    Speaking secret alphabet..."
    Seems to make no sense. But …
    There was a soul food place that he frequented very often and very long. They practically had to push him out the door at closing time, he loved the place so much! The owner (or somebody there) was deaf... Spoke in sign.

    • @kelvinkloud
      @kelvinkloud 4 года назад +1

      he had several key literary influences.... but its clear to me, his most important guide was blake. like blake, morrison was real good at symbolist usage w/ word placement. he also structured the scope of the meaning in an epic large scale vision arrangement many times. again very blake.... he did those 2 things well wh/ when combined allowed the symbolism meaning take on much more density and meaning. & when you connected this densely laden phrases a bigger pattern would emerge. that is blake.... a strong argument can be made hes the best lyricist in music in re to large scape broad theme narratives when on his A game as he certainly was here. as much hype as there is around morrison, hes still underrated imo b/c many still dont understand what he was doing w/ his lyrics.

    • @johnstorton
      @johnstorton 4 года назад

      @@kelvinkloud Yeah, thank you. Blake! I never remember, or even know, which poet is which.
      You said one thing I don't agree with:
      "...a strong argument can be made he's the best lyricist...."
      There are a lot of things that I don't believe there is a such thing as "best" or "favorite" of, and this is one. ("What's your favorite color?" "I dunno. My favorite color WHAT? Car? Shirt? Dog? … ") He could be the best in this style of poetry, maybe, but there are other styles, too. The Doors are by far my favorite group, and Uriah Heep is my second. (Odd. … They're at opposite ends of the emotional and rock spectrum!) Ken Hensley of Uriah Heep, to me, is also a very fine poet, but uses the more traditional (or common) style. He can convey deep and profound thoughts, and do so gracefully and beautifully. (Too bad he's not the good, wise, loving sage that his lyrics portray.)

    • @kelvinkloud
      @kelvinkloud 4 года назад

      @@johnstorton agree, best is subjective... but w/in a certain style of poetry & theme, imo, morrison was the most gifted. symbolist large scale, epic theme pieces was when morrison was at his best. He was inconsistent, but when he hit pay dirt, it was diamond. the cool thing he was getting better at the end & had actually simplified it to some degree but added more depth. like in riders. blake did this. when you read tyger for example on the surface it seems very simple. but its densely laden when you put the words together & then connect them to the large pattern. as when your eyes at night start to see and shape the pattern of stars into their larger forms & constellations. thats symbolist poetry at its best & not anywhere as easy to do as some think.... that era had some very talented lyricist. dylan was the laurette in music for consistency, varied methods & volume. marley, neil young, bob seger, cash, bowie, lennon, waters, mitchell and don henley come to mind as others who were very gifted at that component of arrangement. There are some guys in hip hop who also will make you think. But overall, that element of music has really faded sadly in popular music. not sure exactly why... I will check out hensley.

    peak doors... less chaotic & more structured then the end, but just as captivating & powerful imo. May have been densmores finest moment also... when you go to morrison land re lyrics, take william blake w/ you. Hes jim's strongest influence technique and theme wise. joseph campbell too will help navigate the motifs and eternal symbols & themes morrison goes for... I like how you point out morrison was one who dealt w/ death as a way to find meaning. I dont think he was obsessed per say or on a death trip. but I do agree that he dealt with it square on so as to understand the depth of how precious life is. Its power. Drama back to the greeks used death or violence as a device w/ the goal of alarming ones sense w/ finality so as to awake one to the lifeblood of life itself. Thats a key theme in this song. Music imo here isnt literal but figurative as a symbol of finding your pulse, your muse your spirit. It could be music, but its also the tapped spirit w/in that gives one pulse, passion, meaning. If you lose that w/in yourself or sell it out, then--->>> turn out the lights. In other words you've loss what is important to live for.... He also carries this over to the collective culture. And demands of it change & scorns the side of it wh/ kills and destroys. Notice he compares mother earth to a fair sister. Greek poets and native americans did this also. they saw it as a life giving source wh/ needed to be respected & a domain wh/ would in turn be protective and fair to you. Like a noble bigger sister who will look after you. Yet his frustration w/ the death cycle of plunder of nature killing it like a wild beast. He demands to listen close & embrace the power & beauty & fight for it till your dying breath.... it uses death as a catalyst to magnify life. one of the all time greatest lyrical song performed.

    At exactly what point did you realize this might not be the right Doors song choice to share with a Lady? Let her hear other less Dark sounds from this Rock poet master. I know YOU liked it. Just sayin'. lol Thumbs UP for the song choice, though.

    The downfall of religion, the environmental crises, the decadence and crumbling of The West, Morrison saw it all coming.

    You guys looked too sober and frigid to have just allowed the music to be absorbed. You need relax when listening to music yo feel it. In1967 I was a thirteen year old kid when I bought this LP I went home smoked a joint and listened to this song a dozen times till my mother came home and told me to turn it off

    Respectfully, I'm calling you out for the jersey. Think about the ads you put on your chest.
    As for the song, it plagarizes soul kitchen in the intro and goes down hill from there. I'MHO it's not their best track.
